The Case For Video Games As Art
2009-06-19 19:56:00
A story today brought to the forefront an issue that's been on my mind. This is an argument that censorship stifles the art of video games. But behind this issue lies another point: video games just don't get accepted as an art form in our culture. At least not with the legitimacy that other media forms get. Where is the Mona Lisa of video games? Where is gaming's Beethoven's 9th? When will a video game be praised on the same level as movies like Fellini's 8½ or, if that's too artsy-tartsy for you, even Star Wars? Here's an example I'd like to show. Maybe it's no Mona Lisa, but it's pretty good. It's Polyphonic Spree's Quest for the Rest. It's an adventure game of a few scenes with little puzzles to solve, not too difficult, the point being more to showcase songs by the band Polyphonic Spree. This has been one of my favorite web games for years now. I've had it bookmarked forever, and come back to play through it every year or so just because it's beautiful. How ...

Funware, A New Game Theory For Marketers
2009-06-07 17:09:00
The generation of the new online game players has motivated consumer brands, websites and charities to use gaming devices to attract attention to their products and services. "Funware" is the application of game-like qualities to non-games. Researchers say that when we play online games, we enter a "flow state" that makes us receptive to the images and information we encounter. While traditional commercials interrupt that state, funware allows for these messages to seep through.

2009-05-21 00:48:00
"Teenagers and video games go together like peanut butter and jelly." Ask any parent and they will likely agree with that statement. I mean seriously, where else can you command your own army one minute, and be burning around the Nurburgring at over 150mph the next? Video game artists can create anything. But, why go to all this work? Because video games offer us a chance to do things we would normally never be able to do. Or, in the recent case of Volkswagen, they give us the chance to do things we are too impatient to wait for.

Top Ten Worst Compulsive Acts In Video Games
2009-04-27 08:56:00
You know what obsessive-compulsives do, don’t you? They repeat the same meaningless activity over and over again for no apparent reason. You know what obsessive-compulsives do, don’t you? They repeat the same meaningless activity over and over again for no apparent reason. And video games, both by design and habit, tend to bring out the worst in compulsive repetition. Here’s the ten cases where it seems to be particularly bad: Jumping over the final punk’s head at the end of stage one in Shinobi. Yeah, this guy. The arcade Shinobi was chock full of villains who spawned at a certain point, and if you memorized their triggers, you could make them spawn over and over again. For instance, if you stood at a certain spot at the end of the second to the last stage in mission two, you could shoot an endless parade of ninja cops dropping out of the helicopter. But the really compulsive one is this plucky little guy. To “win”, you have to make the jump ...
