Enjoy Your Spa On Facebook With Virtual Reality Game, Spa Life
2011-09-23 13:50:00
Facebook would not have become the rage that it is if the concept of social gaming had not endeared multitudes of social net-workers. A lot has been written and said about how every organization with a Facebook page needs to concentrate more on interactivity than mere sales pitch. Nothing can be better than launching a social game to ramp up interactivity. French cosmetics company, Clarins, seem to have caught on to this fact and has taken the unconventional plunge into social gaming. Clarins launched a Facebook game called Spa Life, earlier this week. This is not the first instance of a cosmetics company dabbling with Facebook games. Earlier this year MAC launched a Cute Pinball, a game aimed to increase interactivity coinciding with the launch of MAC’s Quite Cute collection. The uniqueness of Spa Life is that the game is set in a virtual world and players have to don various ‘avatars’. The game is more like a Sims or Farmville than like a Cute Pinball. The move might be an ...

Review "Lobby Hero": Virtual Reality Experience with Unique Stag
2010-12-06 19:54:00
Obstruction of justice is the barrier between what you know to be true and what you want to be true. Who enforces doing the right thing anymore? Its security guards verses police officers in a showdown of championing the truth. Redtwist Theatre presents LOBBY HERO. From the front desk of a Manhattan high-rise, the doorman observes nighttime rituals enforcing safety. His boss secures the building. The police secure the streets. Watching from the parameter, the doorman tries to interject himself into their rounds for light-hearted banter. The routine becomes unhinged when a heinous crime occurs. Although the murder occurs outside their jurisdiction, each uses details of the case for personal gain. LOBBY HERO is a surreal inside-out contemplation on the power of an alibi.

3-D virtual reality environment by UCLA

Its name sounds like something out of science fiction, but the StarCAVE at the University of California, San Diego is now a science fact. The virtual-reality environment allows groups of scientists to venture into worlds as small as nanoparticles and as big as the cosmos ? permitting new insights that could fuel discoveries in many fields. Early users of the StarCAVE include UC San Diego researchers in biomedicine, neuroscience, structural engineering, archaeology, earth science, genomics, art history and other disciplines.Photo of Calit2 researchers explore proteins in 3DCalit2 researchers explore proteins in 3-D from the Protein Data Bank, displayed inside the StarCAVE.The StarCAVE is a five-sided virtual reality (VR) room where scientific models and animations are projected in stereo on 360-degree screens surrounding the viewer, and onto the floor as well. Virtual Reality and the Treatment of Post Traumatic Stress

A GoodTherapy.org News Update Therapists first began the use of virtual reality in the treatment of stress 20 years after the Vietnam War ended. In 1997, researchers in Atlanta created Virtual Vietnam, a program that produced the sights and sounds of war: Huey helicopters with whirring motors, rice paddies, jungle clearings. The iPhone Virtual Reality Goggles, They Do Nothing [Bad Ideas]
2008-03-10 21:00:00
Oh man. Apparently somebody just saw The Lawnmower Man and got inspired. This virtual reality head mount for the iPhone is designed to let you strap your favorite expensive phone to your face, blocking out everything else so there's nothing to distract you from the glow of your precious. This entirely garbage idea was created by a company called Box Fab who presumably just got a copy of Maya and decided to try to trick investors into giving them money. They're a "pre-revenue start-up" looking for people to place bulk orders and pay in advance so they can start manufacturing their ill-advised product ideas. I would really love to see this get made with software that would turn the accelerometer into a VR machine, actually. Seeing people on the train with their iPhones strapped to their faces, slowly going blind and experiencing the future as described in the late 80s, it's almost too awesome for me to imagine. The best part? Box Fab thinks they can make it for under $200. For gogg...

"Consider the source": The idea of the Universe as a virtual reality
2008-01-09 14:34:00
From Boing Boing (via Clusterflock) comes this speculative paper (pdf file) on the idea of the universe as comprised of information. From the abstract: This paper explores the idea that the universe is a virtual reality created by information processing, and relates this strange idea to the findings of modern physics about the physical world. The virtual reality concept is familiar to us from

Ford?s Virtual Reality Cave
2007-12-29 06:49:00
Located in the Product Visualization Center at the company’s Product Development Center in Dearborn, the digital lab, a darkened room about the size of an office, is modeled after a nearly identical Ford of Europe German facility. With two such facilities, cross-Atlantic collaboration is possible for the development of global vehicle platforms. "Having VRCs on both sides of the Atlantic supports the Global Product Development System and Way Forward by allowing management teams in North America and Europe to make consistent decisions based on shared data and to make them more quickly," said James Forbes, Ford Core Vehicle Architecture technical leader. The VRC is outfitted with a computer, discreet cameras and a "driver’s seat." Three walls and the ceiling are covered by rear projection screens that display computer-aided design (CAD) drawings of vehicle interiors and exteriors at actual scale. During a design evaluation, a program engineer sits in a ca...
How to Turn your Wii into a Virtual Reality Device
2007-12-28 16:45:00
'Nintendo, watch and learn!'Softpedia has shown you cool uses of the Wiimote, courtesy of Johnny Chung Lee and it seems that the man is at it again, delivering us a neat invention, based once again on Nintendo's hot console. There's even a great tutorial video beneath, so feel free to check it out or even try it yourself, in case you want to test the Wii's potential. This time, we're dealing with a head tracking device created with the aid of a Wii remote and head mounted sensorbar. You'll also be able to use two infra-red LEDs instead of the standard Wii sensor bar, in order to track the location of your head and get a bite out of virtual reality. As shown in the video below, the display will react perfectly to your movements (of the head and body), turning into some sort of window towards the VR universe. It's a great illusion of 3D space and depth and this experiment uses a software, which is in fact a "custom C# DirectX program as is primarily provided as sample code for ...

New Virtual Reality Headset
2007-12-13 11:55:00
Well I always swore by the Z800 headset back when I was thinking of writing software, tools and games for the Virtual Reality market. However a new bad boy has just come on the scene. The VR920 from eDimensional. Now I have always liked ED because they are reasonably priced for some pretty top end geeky gadgets. I have had the shutter glasses for years now, and although I have had to wear them upside down because I use a projector (Image coming from behind me rather than in front of me). It still made games absolutely awesome. Plus with me writing games for the Wiimote for the PC, it made it possible to have a 3D wall with wiimote inputs making for some pretty realistic emmersive environments on my PC. There were limitations however that you could only see it when looking forward. Well the Z800 for £500 fixed that, and now so does this little gadget for around £200.It contains pretty much the same stuff as the Z800 (Head tracking, dual visual displays allowing 1024x768 displays and su...

I haven't been online recently because we lost our internet connection at home. We were subscribed to Digitel's DSL since June 2005 and after a mixture of bad service and overcharging, we decided to opt out. We then bought Globeline's Broadband wireless internet and phone package but it was an even worse nightmare than Digitel.A few days after we submitted the application, a crew of testers came to our house to test if it really works and since it's wireless, to make sure that there is a signal/network that the wireless modem can connect to. Needless to say, we were impressed at how fast the internet connection was, we were even able to download a song via Limewire. And so they promised to have the router and the wireless phone delivered in a couple of days. Those couple of days turned into a week or two, and when it finally arrived, the delivery man just left it and said he doesn't know anything about installing it: "Taga-deliver lang po ako." (I am just the delivery man.) I c...

Are You Living In A Virtual Reality World?
2007-09-24 14:35:00
Hi, I’m Johnny Oops and I have a problem. Sometimes I feel like I’m not real. Granted I am a fictional character in a novel by the same name, but I still question my true identity. I question my very existence. In my case I think it is understandable, but what about you? Do you question your existence? Do you know if you are real?Sometimes I feel like we are all bit players in some virtual reality world designed by the master of all out souls. What’s that they say about us all being God’s creatures? What does that mean? Is it possible we are being manipulated in some giant virtual reality game for the pleasure, entertainment, or instruction of some vast intelligence whose capabilities and intentions we cannot even fathom? Is this a test?Sometimes I feel like I am operating in a dream. Other times I feel like I’ve been here before and done that before. OK, I?ll admit that not all aspects of travel are a pleasure. It has state-of-the-art lighting and bar technology that can project images of any location all around you as you sip your Tequila Sunrise. Apparently, the furnishing are touch sensitive too so light beams shoot out every time you put your glass down. Reach out towards the projections and they will react to your movements. So it is now possible to enjoy views of the Grand Canyon without even having to go as far as Zone 4 on the Underground. World Wildlife Fund sets up Conservation Island on Second Life
2007-08-17 07:15:00
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has today set up a virtual island on Second Life, designed to allow residents to live in harmony with its friendly wild animal population. "Conservation Island" includes Mr Tangee, an orangutan with an ice-cream van (exactly how wild is that supposed to be?), and guide pandas who show people around the wind-powered town. "WWF set up the island as a way to help people learn about conservation issues and the need to live sustainably. We want to be able to show people that WWF has solutions to the real environmental issues affecting their 'first life'," said WWF's David Cole.
