When will CTA Washington Red Line stop reopen?
2009-11-20 20:00:00 Via Twitter, a rider asked about the Washington Red Line stop. The CTA's response is below."Will the Washington Red Line stop open when Block 37 and pedway opens on Thanksgiving?"The CTA responded: "No, there is currently no timeline for when the Washington Red Line station will reopen, or when the paid transfer tunnel (one level below the pedway) between the Washington Red and Blue Line stations will reopen."...
1000 W. Washington: Showing of the week
2009-11-08 22:55:00 Let me start off by saying, I attempted to attend TWO other open houses this week, but could not find the entrance or a number to call to get in... I'm wondering if the Realtors just bounced because it was such a nice weekend. In the end, though, I'm happy I got the chance to see the one-bedroom unit at 1000 W. Washington. The 1,700 square foot loft was much different from many north side properties I've seen and offered a lot of open space, and perhaps even the possibility for a second bedroom. As is somewhat visible in this picture, the unit has two levels separated by three steps- the kitchen and dining area are sunk in while the...

Pour Some Sugar On Me - Who Are the Washington Redskins?
2009-09-22 09:00:00 More photos » by Alex Brandon - AP Coach Jim Zorn simply must do a better job. From my seat at FedEx, he had the worst day of anyone on the Redskins sideline this past Sunday. It seems a few (hundred thousand) people agree with me on this. Browse more photos » People have come to expect unbridled optimism from me, both in this space and in general. And while I am far from beaten down, the fact is that I am alarmed. Jim Zorn had a bad day. The failure to convert red zone opportunities into touchdowns against the Rams was bad all by itself. But the fact that this has become a trend straddling two seasons in this offense is alarming. I am there. Where I am NOT though, is in a pissed off place after a win. You only get 16 chances to win each year (unless you make the playoffs of course), and regardless of the opponent, kneeling out the clock for the win...

Hogs Haven - The Fastest Growing Washington Redskins Community in the World
2009-09-17 19:30:00 *This statement has been confirmed by multiple sources, Florio-style (which is to say I polled my wife, my 2-year old son, and the leftover spaghetti in the fridge.) We are proud to say that, in addition to going over 1 million visitors, Hogs Haven membership is cruising toward 1,500, and rising fast. With all the new folks coming through and checking us out, we thought it would be a good idea to set a season-opening tone to kind of spell out what it is we all do here and what we think it is important people know. 1) First and foremost, this is a fan-based community. We are in this because we love rooting for the Redskins and following our favorite team. Being a fan is about lovin', not hatin'. Criticism of the team and the moves it makes are welcome and necessary, but we try to refrain from hating on Skins here. You do that and you pretty much have identified yourself as a Cowgirls or Eagles fan. 2) The community theme is very important. Once you sign in as a member, we encourage...

2009-09-16 07:41:00 [A] boss needs to be careful when he tells a random guy in the lunchroom that he likes ketchup on his hot dogs lest an executive overhear him and ban mustard from the premises. If a boss wants mustard prohibited, he should say so unequivocally. Otherwise, he should just order his hot dog, eat it, and shut up.

Day 6 . . . College Tourcation: George Washington, Georgetown, Washington
2009-09-14 16:52:00 Day 6 - 10 of this family vacation was spent zipping around Washington DC with the exception of an outing to Gettysburg. In previous blog's "What to know before you go: Washington DC", I have written about sightseeing so here I will just note our college tour experiences. There are a number of great universities in DC: Catholic University, American University, Georgetown and George Washington just to name a few. Our hotel the Washington Suites in Georgetown (for a description of the hotel check out Sleeps5.com) was located next to the George Washington campus. This is a true urban campus with university buildings right next to office and government buildings; the Lincoln Memorial is just a few block away. The greek system is a row of connected brick buildings resembling normal student housing with signs above the doors indicating their affiliation. The Foggy Bottom Metro stop is located right in the middle of it all allowing quick access around the city. There is definitely...

College Tourcation Day 5: University of Mary Washington
2009-09-05 07:13:00 Our family of five plus Papa left Charlottesville late in the evening and drove on to Fredericksburg, Virginia home of Civil War battlefields and the University of Mary Washington. The University has special signifigance for us because my mother graduated from this institution when it was the women's division of UVA. My parents met here and were married in a small chapel nearby. Day 5: We checked out of our hotel which lies on the outskirts of town between strip malls, grocery stores, and undeveloped fields and headed to the University of Mary Washington. It is a smaller school than those we had visited previously. The campus is really beautiful -- colonial red brick buildings set inside a residential neighborhood. We also noticed there is still an imbalance in girls even with its coed status. This visit we were fortunate to arrive at the admissions office just when a tour group was assembling. The only negative on our tour was the dorms; the one they chose to walk us through sme...

215 W. Washington: green new construction rental in the Loop
2009-07-25 20:01:00 Chicago's downtown has seen some new construction over the last three years, but nothing quite like 215 W. Washington. It's the building you see under construction as you pass the Washington and Wells L stop, and its the first rental residential high rise in the Loop in 15 years. In addition, it's one of the first LEED-certified residential high rises in Chicago. Some of the features include 75% of the indoor areas having access to natural light, low-flow water fixtures and sustainable materials used during construction. Plus, with easy access to the L, buses and the Metra, you might not have to drive as much. The 50-story building will include an amenity floor on 14 and 369 studio, convertible, one-, two-, and...
Washington DC: Things to Know Before You Go
2009-07-18 01:45:00 I love Washington DC. We have just returned from the bustling capital city. There was no end of entertainment for our family of five plus grandpa. Museums, gardens, monuments, cool buildings, and charming neighborhoods, DC has it all and most of it is free. Logistically there are a few things that need to be planned ahead. The White House - Make your request to visit the home of the Obamas six months in advance through one of your Representatives or your Senators. If you are a foreign visitor contact your embassy. The White House is receiving 1000 requests a day for tours! You will need to be able to provide Social Security Numbers and full names for each member of your party. The Capitol - Again you can request a visit via your Representative or Senator. Or go to the Capitol website at www.visitthecapitol.gov where you can easily make a reservation and print it off at home. You can also just show up and take your chances that you won't have to wait long for the next open tour. T...

2009-03-10 17:47:00 Recently I was online filling out an application for a foreign affairs fellowship sponsored by a top government entity. After the usual who/what/where/when questionnaire, I was taken to a page with four essay-style questions. In the interest of full disclosure, you should know that I have not written essay-like answers to anything, beyond winding personal emails from my closest friends, since I applied for graduate school ten years ago. But being a professional writer, I was unfazed by the prospect of some thought-provoking and intellect-tickling inquiry.

Washington Post: Hits Obama On Anti-Israel Appointee For National Intellige
2009-03-01 23:34:00 Surprising coming from the Washington Post. I posted about Charles Freeman before here. Most of President Obama's "missteps" to date have been Washington peccadilloes of the "let's find something to complain about" sort. But Obama has made one major mistake that has attracted little public attention: his appointment of Charles Freeman as chairman of the National Intelligence Council. Freeman was attacked by pro-Israel activists, but the contretemps over Freeman's view of Israel misses the broader problem, which is that he's an ideological fanatic. That may sound like an odd description for a respectable bureaucrat and impeccable establishmentarian such as Freeman. What's more, he's not an ideologue of the sort who draws most of the attention. When most people think of foreign policy ideology, they mean neoconservatism, which dominated the Bush administration. Broadly speaking, neoconservatism is obsessed with the moral differences between democracies and non-democracies. At its...

Neil Diamond, the Washington Wizards and More
2009-02-10 14:57:00 I hate writing this since I?m such a big fan, but I think Neil Diamond somewhat mailed in his performance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night. Considering that he?s performed Sweet Caroline thousands of times, I guess he deserves a pass. The one interesting part of Neil?s performance was the reaction of Paul McCartney. He was really, really into it.On the Friday before the Grammy Awards, MusiCares, a charity founded by The Recording Academy, honored Neil Diamond as the 2009 Person of the Year. For only $75,000, you could have a Diamond Sponsorship (I don?t think the name is related to the singer) with three Diamond tables (36 seats), a 4-color page in the Tribute Journal (whatever that is) and recognition on the dinner invitation. While I guess this was a tax write-off and included dinner and performances by Adele, Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Josh Groban, Jennifer Hudson and Tim McGraw, $75,000 seems like a lot of money. Actually, if you split the cost 36 ways, it?s only $2083.3...
