NY Times, Washington Post Show Ecuador President Correa?s Corruption
2012-01-24 19:59:00 For those who romanticized Ecuador as a fair, democratic country with solid “freedom of the press” laws, much like America, it’s time to wake up. As I have explained in blog posts and video like this one… Ecuador is a corrupt country, where press freedom is nothing more than fantasy. See these excerpts from both (Read More...)

Lessons for Europe From America?s First Great Depression: Echoes ? Bloomber
2012-01-04 20:08:00 The European Union is in trouble. Some governments are teetering on default, and even German creditworthiness is questioned. Interbank lending in the euro area is increasingly strained. The entire project of European economic integration, wrought through six decades of delicate negotiation, seems at risk of collapse. In the U.S., meanwhile, European leaders are being criticized ...

2012-01-01 09:48:00 The last New Year’s Day in human history is here. You may not believe so, but millions do. Washington Post Hits On Youth Soccer Trend To Play Club (Academy) Over High
2011-06-06 14:00:00 A recent article in the Washington Post (U.S. youth soccer: Is it best to play in high school, or on an academy team?) does a nice job of demonstrating the current dilemma in youth soccer as elite level clubs (soccer academies) put pressure on their high-school-age players to commit exclusively to their programs by requiring them to "forgo" playing for their high schools. Their goal, as reported by the Post, is to...

Washington Post Ombudsman Misses Point
2010-04-12 19:05:00 -By Warner Todd Huston Today, in his guise as the Washington Post's ombudsman, Andrew Alexander posted a discussion about the recent misreporting by the Old Media about the various "incidents" that supposedly occurred between the admittedly raucous tea party protesters and members of Congress in Washington, D.C., during the healthcare fight. But while Alexander finally makes some admissions on how the Old Media dropped the ball on these exaggerated reports, he still missed the point of the whole mess. Alexander starts his report off with an interesting rhetorical style. He writes about incidents as if they actually happened even as he admits later down the page that either they didn't or might not have. He recounts the supposed incidents in...

Tired of Tires
2009-04-13 15:46:00 I?ve been a driver for nearly 18 years and probably driven over 200,000 miles during that time. I mentioned briefly last Monday that I got a flat tire, but I didn?t include the fact that this was the first flat tire in the 18 years of driving. Well, while heading back to Pittsburgh on Friday, I had my second flat tire in less than a week. Last week?s incident occurred on I-66 when the rear driver?s side tire blew out. On Friday, I noticed that my alignment seemed a little off when I was on 270, but I didn?t piece everything together until I merged onto I-70 and heard and felt another flat tire. In this case, the rear passenger?s side tire had some sort of valve leak. So now I have two new tires and two new valves on the front tires. However, I still sort of freaked out when I drove to and from Washington this weekend. I worried a little after hitting any bump on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. As a bit of a tangent, I?m quick to criticize or write negative posts against companies ...

Washington Post: Hits Obama On Anti-Israel Appointee For National Intellige
2009-03-01 23:34:00 Surprising coming from the Washington Post. I posted about Charles Freeman before here. Most of President Obama's "missteps" to date have been Washington peccadilloes of the "let's find something to complain about" sort. But Obama has made one major mistake that has attracted little public attention: his appointment of Charles Freeman as chairman of the National Intelligence Council. Freeman was attacked by pro-Israel activists, but the contretemps over Freeman's view of Israel misses the broader problem, which is that he's an ideological fanatic. That may sound like an odd description for a respectable bureaucrat and impeccable establishmentarian such as Freeman. What's more, he's not an ideologue of the sort who draws most of the attention. When most people think of foreign policy ideology, they mean neoconservatism, which dominated the Bush administration. Broadly speaking, neoconservatism is obsessed with the moral differences between democracies and non-democracies. At its...

Washington Post Poll Shows Likely Voters Backing Obama By Wide Margin
2008-09-24 15:00:00 As I've written in the recent past, when likely voters tend to be Republican. What does it say when the majority tilt toward the Democratic Candidate? Well that's what's happening in today's Washington Post poll. See below: Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll. Just 9 percent of those surveyed rated the economy as good or excellent, the first time that number has been in single digits since the days just before the 1992 election. Just 14 percent said the country is heading in the right direction, equaling the record low on that question in polls dating back to 1973. More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic pr...

Washington Post Gets What Charles Krauthammer Missed: Obama Is American Sym
2008-07-30 20:35:00 A week or so back, I got after conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer for missing the fact that Barack Obama is a symbol of America and what's possible here. I wrote:You miss what leadership is about. Your column demonstrates that your don't get it. And it shows that you don't know or intellectually understand what kind of role the President of the United States serves. That person is considered this: LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD.Do you understand? Ok. I'll repeat it.LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD.That means to most people, the SYMBOL of freedom. That is what Senator Obama represents to many. To ho-hum or sigh or cringe at the presentation of this mear fact is to show a true ignorance of the intense desire many people in the World have to rid ourselves of the true mentail illness that is racism.Charles. Price increases do not equal tax increases
2008-06-02 18:34:00 Robert J. Samuelson of the Washington Post has a problem with the idea of a cap-and-trade system for reducing carbon emissions: since it increases the cost of energy, it’s a tax, not a “trade,” and so should be called a “cap-and-tax” system instead. I have a problem with his characterization, but not because he’s wrong about how energy costs will go up with the implementation of a a cap-and-trade system, or the straightforward carbon tax he prefers. Suddenly pricing what was previously free will absolutely increase the price of energy, no matter whether the price is determined by supposed market mechanisms or by government fiat. No, what I have a problem with is that he appears to be implying that anything that increases the price of energy is a tax. Reviewing five economic models, the Environmental Defense Fund asserts that the cuts can be achieved “without significant adverse consequences to the economy.” Fuel prices would rise, bu...
