According to yesterday's article by the BBC, a court in California just ruled that all traces of a website called Wikileaks be removed from the internet. The website was founded in 2006 as a means for whistle-blowers to "anonymously post government and corporate documents." It claims to have published more than 1.2 million. Though there seems to be clear potential for abuse, especially when it comes to the security of government documents, the site had equal potential as a positive watchdog endeavor. The circumstances surrounding the site's shutdown are especially dubious. The case was filed by Julius Baer, a Swiss banking group. Wikileaks recently posted several documents which "allegedly reveal that the bank was involved with money laundering and tax evasion." Wikilinks did not have an attorney present at the hearing, nor were they there themselves. The reason? Apparently they were only given a few hours notice. By e-mail. How outrage...
