"Underwater Baited Hook" Is World Wildlife Federation's Smart Gear Winner
2009-09-20 03:08:00
At the moment an albatross swoops down to the sea for a bit of fish bait, it can go from being one of the most graceful soaring and swooping birds to being "bycatch," the term for an unintended victim of a fishery net that few birds escape.  The winner of this year's World Wildlife Federation's (WWF) Smart Gear competition has tackled the problem of bird bycatch with its invention, for now called quite simply the "underwater baited hook."

Plight of the Puffin
2008-06-05 00:44:00
Our cute friends the Puffin are having some struggles, with numbers of breeding pairs plummeting in one of their breeding grounds on the Isle of May, just down the road and a short ferry ride from where I grew up in Scotland.Only 70% of nests on the island are now being occupied, while adult birds that have landed on the island have been underweight and malnourished. The finding follows the discovery of numerous dead puffins washing up along the coast over the last two winters.Professor Mike Harris, the lead researcher with the Oxfordshire-based Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, said the precise causes of the decline were complex and unclear but it seemed very likely that warming seas, changes and shifts in puffin food supplies, and intensive fishing across the North Sea were to blame.Although the bird ? which has a relatively long 30-year lifecycle - congregates in large colonies such as the Isle of May to breed in the spring, it spreads across the sea to winter on the water. It al...

Iowa wildlife report: bunnies!
2008-05-07 20:38:00
Excuse for not mowing the lawn lately #137: I have a nest of bunnies. The kids discovered a bunny nest on our front lawn. Evidently, rabbits dig holes in the ground, birth their brood, and then cover the hole with some dried grass and bits of their own fur. We have been careful not to touch them so as not to leave human smell on them, and so far they seem to be OK with our occasional intrusion. As I understand it, rabbits lactate like any mammal, and the mother nurses them only a few minutes out of the day, but rabbit milk is powerful nutritious, so it balances out. Bunnies take about a month to mature enough to go it alone. Also, rabbits aren't particularly attentive mothers. We've seen her come back to the nest at night. Usually she leaves it with more grass and fur piled on it, in an attempt to hide it better. With wilderness all around us, I don't know why she chose the lawn of a suburban home for her nursery. So the pics aren't too sharp, because I'm trying to be...

Robotic Wildlife Aid Study of Real-Life Critters
2008-05-06 13:40:00
Tech News World has a great story on how scientists are now using robo-animals to further their studies into certain species. One gray squirrel, its bushy tail twitching, barked a warning as another scrounged for food nearby. It was an ordinary spring day at Hampshire College, except that the rodent issuing the warning was powered by amps, not acorns. Dubbed "Rocky" after the cartoon character, the robo-squirrel is working its way into Hampshire's live-squirrel clique, controlled by researchers several yards away with a laptop computer and binoculars. Sarah Partan, an assistant professor in animal behavior at Hampshire, hopes that by capturing a close-up view of squirrels in nature, Rocky will help her team decode squirrels' communication techniques, social cues and survival instincts. Basic Models Rocky is among many robotic critters worldwide helping researchers observe animals in their natural environments rather than in labs. The research could let scientists better understa...

Staglands Wildlife Park
2008-04-25 07:30:00
As it is now the kids two week break from school and kindy, it means trying to find some type of entertainment, of course living in Wellington that isn't hard to do!Since moving house I have made the agreement with the Jo, Susan, Joan and Jenny that I will go to their homes as normal every Tuesday, but when it comes the holidays they will come my way, and so of course came the idea of Staglands. We have been before but it is an amazing place that the children just adore. It's basically and open wildlife park where you can get up close and personal with the various animals. It really does however amaze me how this place operates, in the UK it would have just been stamped with 'health and safety risk' and shut down. It's amazing how these Kiwi's have a better outlook on life, so comes the saying I suppose of 'Oh it will be alright mate'.A bit low on numbers today as only Susan and Jo could make it, but that wasn't going to dampen our enthusiasm. The weather was good to us as...

World Wildlife Fund comes out in support of electric drive
2008-04-21 03:58:00
The head of the World Wildlife Fund has come out publicly in favor of the electrification of the world's transportation system. James Leape, director general of WWF International, has declared that cars need to get smaller, lighter and far more efficient. Leape also said that cars should be migrating to electric drive because it is more efficient than internal combustion engines. As an organization that supports preserving animal species, the WWF has a vested interest in helping to mitigate phenomena like climate change, deforestation and other environmental problems. All the car-makers are working on a variety of electric drive vehicles using multiple technological approaches. There are of course multiple issues with all of these including cost, durability, range, etc. There is also, of course, the issue of producing electricity to power plug-in vehicles. Somewhere there's a chorus repeating the mantra that we need to work aggressively to develop sustainable methods of generating...

Jim Koan has a 120-acre apple farm in Flushing, MI. Plagued by the Plum Curculio Beetle that lays its eggs in apples and makes the fruit drop too early from trees, Koan could have used frequent sprays of pesticides for years to get rid of the beetles, or he could use pigs. He tried chickens and ...

Boracay wildlife
2008-04-10 05:26:00
Contrary to popular belief, Boracay hosts some awesome migratory species. Below are some photos of them caught in their natural habitat. But let me caution wildlife photographers, especially the amateur ones. These species can come down hard on you if they ever catch you taking their photograph. Their male partners can be especially territorial and won't think twice about ripping you apart if they catch you taking an interest on their mate.Best if you employ telephoto lenses at all times.
