Generation Y and the workplace
2010-07-12 21:25:00 I'm busy writing a White Paper to explain to organizational change managers what a social office is and why it matters - so I was delighted to come across this research that's been published in May of this year that provides feedback on what matters most to Gen Y entering, or preparing to enter the workplace. Gen Y is important to employers because, with the baby boomer generation racing towards retirement, this is the community charged with taking over the reigns. But with so many employers seeking such a small supply of brain-power, inevitably the voice of Gen Y matters. And Gen Y has a whole new set of employment expectations; one of which is the work environment. This article does well to capture the workplace environmental expectations of Gen Y workers.Agilization is the blog on business and technology by Ian Tomlin

5 Tips For Workplace Creativity
2009-12-07 13:58:00 Pressures of most jobs often prevent creative thinking that can lead to new and better ideas. During my career, I've enjoyed working with many individuals who inspire creativity. One of the breakthrough creative thinkers in the country today is Bob Thacker, senior vice president of advertising and marketing at Naperville, IL-based OfficeMax. Here are Bob's five secrets to demonstrating creativity in the workplace: 1.  -; Interact with people you don't always see. Look for people who are enthusiastic and positive. Share a cup of coffee or lunch and ask for their perspectives. Creative people are often the most connected people. 2.  -; People like to play. Invite others to help you brainstorm. Even informally. It's a compliment to them and a...

Friendly Workplace
2009-03-13 06:33:00 Pornography began spreading with the advent of the Internet as a new medium of communications in the middle 1990s. Earlier, like the video cassette recorders and even earlier like printed material, the Internet has been effective because it allows viewing pornography anonymously in an absolute privacy, without fear of being pointed out as a sex starved or a perverted psychopath. And, now cyber space is littered with porno websites for anyone with a computer and a modem to access. Experts predict that tech advancements like use of cable modems and DSL connections will fuel even more growth in the trend. No wonder some people in the world have not only accepted porno but playfully heap it with high brow attention and defend it?The technology allows access to and distribution of pornographic material - explicit graphics as well as textual - primarily via websites, peer-to-peer software, IRC, Usenet, blogs and now through Webcams to large audience beyond geographical boundaries without ...

How To Survive The Workplace
2008-12-08 21:55:00 When you think about it, the workplace and the people in it are very fascinating. It's a group of individuals all working hard to ensure the survival of something larger than themselves, the company, which in turns aids their survival. It's a wonderful symbiotic relationship, but it makes your wonder, how do they do it? How do they survive in the workplace?
the workplace apostle
2008-10-14 19:31:00 The term "apostle" literally translates as "sent forth one." In New Testament times the original 12 Apostles were sent forth as direct representatives of The Boss Himself. Their job then was to do the work of Big CEO. These men were given authority by Jesus to teach, preach, heal people, and cast out demons. They were charged by Christ Himself to "make disciples" of all nations. For a deeper description of what this means, an apostle is also defined as one who pioneers and establishes. These people are the leaders that take us into uncharted territory and lay new foundations where we need to build. And because the charge of Christ in the Great Commission had to do with people (and not places or things), then I like to think of this "pioneering and establishing" in terms of people as well. What does that mean? It means that apostles lay these new foundations in people rather than laying a foundation for people. In order for the original 12 Apostles to be successful...

Tale from an old workplace
2008-08-13 20:43:00 Ah, the memories grow fond after five years away from a very stressful job.
the five-fold workplace
2008-08-08 19:01:00 In today's workplace there are a variety of needs that need to be met within any organization. And it is up to us to meet those needs. Different needs will require different solutions, and often are best dealt with by different people. So a well-balanced organization should have different types of leaders to help meet the various needs of the organization. We have discussed the various levels of leadership here before (the manager-leader and the executive-leader), but in addition to those levels, we must also look at different types of leaders. And when striving to be a successful leader in the workplace, it is important to focus on a specific area of leadership, or you will run the risk of being mediocre at everything. It doesn't matter how good you think you are, you were not made to be the master of every type of leadership role that there is. The Bible outlines in Ephesians 4:11 what the various leadership roles are for the church.... &nb-sp; "And he g...

the tithe and workplace success
2008-07-18 16:05:00 Trust me, the last thing that I wanted to do was to write about the importance of tithing. But before you tune me out, I want you to consider this for a moment. As I continue with the Lessons from Proverbs, I come across a statement that I just cannot get around...First, it is important that you understand something about studying the Proverbs. While they are filled with some of the greatest wisdom ever written, it is not actually considered Biblical "law" (like the 10 commandments). It is wise counsel, that's all. So I am not going to sit here and try to tell you that this is a Biblical commandment. But I do believe that this is wise advice. With that said, let's take a look at the Scripture... Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce;then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. &n-bsp; - Proverbs 3:9-10As we break this down, let's ju...
The Heller Decision's Impact on the Workplace
2008-07-02 01:52:00 I read Bearing Arms in the Workplace written by an employment law specialist. We have gone back and forth in the comments for a few exchanges and I am posting the latest round here. I do not believe that Mr. Phillips is anything other than ignorant. I don't believe that he fully understands the issue from the practical side, and while I am not a lawyer, I think some his legal reasoning is faulty. This is exactly the sort of person that the firearms community should be engaging with, as we all have the same goals of personal safety and security - but we differ on the implementation. I am ignorant of the legal liability of allowing employees to be armed, or simply not having a weapons policy. I would like to see some common ground and improvements that will actually keep people safer. read more

Risk of Violence in the Workplace
2008-06-02 00:11:00 Every now and then The HEADoc finds himself in an undesirable inescapable situation . . . Last week The HEADoc was trying to forge an alliance with the most delicate of cases; a teenager facing the difficult reality of the first psychotic break of Paranoid Schizophrenia. Failing to make a trusting bond with such a patient could adversely affect his future treatment outcome in many ways. This is the type of case that can truly test the psychiatrist's clinical abilities. As the patient made an effort to let down his psychological walls of defense for the first time, a ruckus was undeniably overheard coming from the front. The situation seemed to be escalating. It was a drug seeker unable to obtain his drug of choice from the local ER after claiming to have unlikely side effects from what he had been prescribed by The HEADoc the previous week. Profanities shouted at the nurse and receptionist along with racial slurs and demands for something to be done immedia...

HIV/AIDS In The Workplace
2008-05-29 13:55:00 Highlight On AIDS In The Workplace: By Tameka Lundy - Nassau, Bahamas: As the International Labour Organization [ILO] commends the Caribbean region for new programmes to root out workplace discrimination against HIV/AIDS infected persons, in The Bahamas trade union activists say they continue to try to educate employers and employees about how to deal with the situation. However, a few of them admitted that there are no comprehensive, detailed policies, although it was something that they are working towards. Recently, the ILO said new programmes designed to step up action against HIV/AIDS in the workplace are becoming increasingly common in the Caribbean. It referred to five Caribbean states in particular: Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago for working with the ILO?s SHARE (Strategic HIV/AIDS Responses in Enterprises) project to put into place policies and programmes to address discrimination and behaviour change in and through the workplace. Do you prefer a male boss over female at your workplace?
2008-05-14 11:36:00 More than 68% men and women prefer male bosses at their work. This is the conclusion of recently concluded survey - "Preference of Bosses in Emerging Corporate Culture" - held by ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry in India). I am not sure whether to agree or disagree. In my 12 years of experience I have had only one female boss and I would rate her as one of my top bosses I have ever worked with. Although, it may not be the yardstick with which one can come to a conclusion, I was always under the impression that women make better bosses. Contrary to my belief, 68% of the survey respondents expressed that "males are faster in taking decisions, quicker in disposing off their assigned jobs and much more focused and straight towards their work and at the same time passionate in awarding their subordinates with functional autonomy to completely let them enjoy their work".
