I Have No Idea What I Said on This Pet World Radio Show
2009-10-20 14:23:00
Steve Dale I have the weirdest normal life, by which I mean my life is exactly like you'd expect it to be except for completely bizarre stuff always popping up unexpectedly, leaving me to wonder if I court strangeness. Thus I found myself awake at 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning (which hasn't happened since I was probably 7 years-old) answering questions on a radio call-in show hosted by Steve Dale of Pet World. Despite finding my thoughts on dogs morally repugnant and illogical, he did offer to buy me a beer if I was on the show (because I said, "Ok, but you owe me a beer.") This is because I wrote a column in RedEye making the very...
Hinrich's baritone brings world peace, but Deng's voice encourage
2009-10-18 18:52:00
In lieu of anything new happening with the Chicago Bulls this weekend, let's laugh at some of their former players. God invented the internet so that we could feel more closely acquainted to professional athletes. It's the reason they have online chats, it's the reason they have their own websites, it's the reason we follow them on Twitter, and it's the reason that their team contractually obligates them to humiliate themselves for the sake of a few Youtube videos. For this, we must give our eternal thanks, because God never fails to satisfy us. And nor does James Johnson. During a Bulls game last season, a halftime segment aired that showed Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose, Tyrus Thomas and Luol Deng...
Robert Priddy and Barry Pittard On Dr G. Venkataraman ? Sathya Sai Baba Glo
2009-10-17 23:16:00
The Sathya Sai Organisation's Deception and Propaganda Expose "The foes of the 'open society' (Sir Karl Popper's term) are those who use its very openness to achieve their closed and devious ends. Sai Baba and his highly authoritarian and cultist organisation have such ends, which critics have tried to make known. Its foremost leaders silence all those who question it- and never face substantive criticisms. For the first time - after six years of pained and guilty silence - since hundreds of long-term devotees left it in disgust - the Sathya Sai Organisation has found it necessary to try to defuse the debate about Sathya Sai Baba's alleged crimes, deceits and fraudulence. Dr. Venkataraman's tendentious cover-up article expresses untruths which have long circulated within the cult, giving an opportunity to confront him with facts and truth"
DePaul sets a world record
2009-10-16 03:03:00
Knockout winner Joe Anhalt shoots during the later stages of the competition. Some world records, like the mile's 3:34.13, are seemingly unattainable. But somewhere on the level of making the world's largest pizza or holding the world's largest wedding is the feat DePaul pulled off on Thursday night, and it's still certainly one to be commended.DePaul hosted the largest game of knockout ever with 112 participants breaking the previous record of 100 that was set last year by the New York Knicks. The winner was DePaul junior Joe Anhalt. He lasted far longer than I - though I did manage to get through three rounds without making a single free throw and relegating myself to quickly chasing down rebounds. A few...

It's a Ruff World If You Hate Dogs
2009-10-14 14:09:00
Photo: MorguefileChicago recently passed an ordinance that would fine dog owners from $50 to $250 if they fail to control their pets from making "excessive noise." To which I say, "great"--not because I have a dog in my neighborhood that particularly annoys me, but because it generally makes me happy when dog owners have to experience even a sliver of the inconvenience and grief that I have taken my whole life simply for not liking dogs. That's right. I'll say it again and again. Even though I know it makes me the least popular guy since I was the least popular guy in 7th grade: I. Hate. Dogs. I hate the way they smell, the way they eat, the...

Is it staged? Many say it is. But it's pretty damn hilarious if you ask me! The follow-up? Not so much:Hey, let's throw in Star Wars Kid for good measure!:And the remix:...
Extreme Golf Experiences Around the World
2009-10-13 23:52:00
As the PGA Tour season comes to a close and enters "silly season", it is up to amateur golfers to decide whether or not to stash their golf clubs in a corner of the garage or to embark upon an extreme experience to an exotic locale. The serious player never wants the season to end! From "ice golf" in Greenland to playing "sand" golf in Dubai, experiences that challenge the senses as well as your ability are worthy of the trek, and the "fun factor" of being on unfamiliar territory will surely be a memorable experience. Grab a flourescent ball for this golf course:  Although temperatures rarely climb above -13 degrees celsius and with a wind chill factor that sometimes makes it feel as if it is -50 degrees in the sun, (did I just say negative 50?) Uummannqaq, located north of the Arctic Circle, is home to the World Ice Golf Championships held in March.. I wonder if there is a large crowd on hand to watch the final round? The west side of the island is also home to Santa Claus,...

2009-10-13 01:59:00

At the center of this four-character drama--inspired by Gross' own life and family experience--is young Billy Roman (Max Zuppa) and the anxiety-riddled preparations for his Bar Mitzvah in 1963 north suburban Chicago. When Billy's older brother Rob (Ian Paul Custer) returns from college for the High Holidays, he further elevates household tensions by bringing along his own ideas about his future--and the boys' parents Essie (Rengin Altay) and Nate (Keith Kupferer) must face some difficult...
Kyle Orton Is Shocking the World
2009-10-12 07:41:00
And a hush fell over the Chicagoland area. The Broncos and Kyle Orton beat Tom Brady and the Patriots. And this time the role of Captain Comeback was played -- spot on -- by Kyle Orton, former Bear. To be sure, Orton has been the beneficiary of some great luck and great plays by his receivers. The defense in Denver has been phenomenal. But it's time to give the man his props. Kyle Orton played an incredible game today. The Broncos are 5-0. And Orton is a big reason they are. It's often said that if at the end of the season you're 9-7, then you're a 9-7 team. The meaning being that it all evens out over 16 games....

Yesterday was a huge day for soccer fans around the world as eight more teams secured their spot in South Africa for next year's World Cup. The U.S. and Mexico each used a big-time win to ensure their qualification, with Mexico getting a goal from Fire midfielder Cuauhtemoc Blanco in their 4-1 defeat of El Salvador at Estadio Azteca and the U.S. narrowly escaping Honduras with a thrilling 3-2 victory. The U.S. and Mexico joined Germany, Italy, Denmark, Serbia, the Ivory Coast, and Chile in booking their place in the finals yesterday....
Wanjiru ready for World record assault - Chicago Marathon preview
2009-10-10 22:57:00
Jim Ferstle IAAF  When asked what was the most memorable about his 20 year tenure at the helm of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, executive race director Carey Pinkowski answered the three World records that have been set on the flat, fast course through the neighborhoods of Chicago. On Sunday's 33rd running of the event, weather permitting, there may be a fourth record to add to those memories. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race.Beijing Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru demonstrated in that race in 2008 that he is capable of lowering Haile Gebrselassie's 2:03:59 mark and two other Chicago entrants, Morocco's Abderrahim Goumri and Kenya's Vincent Kipruto, whose personal bests, like Wanjiru, are also...

The most expensive belt in the world
2009-10-09 17:00:00
Could this be the most expensive belt in the world? At $250,000, you would think so, so why is this belt so expensive? First up it is a Gucci belt fair enough but that still doesn?t do it, so it must be the thirty carats of flawless diamonds that are placed very carefully no doubt into ...
All-Chicago World Series (10-9-1906)
2009-10-09 07:01:00
The World Series opened in Chicago today.  Cubs or Sox?  Both of them.   BOTH OF THEM?   It was a long time ago, and each league had only eight teams then.  It was so long ago that the Cubs were playing on the West Side.  Wrigley Field hadn't even been built yet.  For that matter, old Comiskey Park hadn't been built, either.   On  paper, the Cubs had the better team.  They had swept through the National League, winning 116 games and losing only 36.  They had Tinker, Evers, and Chance in the infield, and Three-Finger Brown on the pitcher's mound.  And that was just the future hall-of-famers.   The Sox had barely won the American League pennant.  Nicknamed...
New Oklahoma Law Will Put Details Of All Abortions Online [Roe Vs. World]
2009-10-08 23:01:00
[From Jezebel] A new Oklahoma law will require the details of every abortion to be posted on a public website. Proponents say this will prevent abortion — apparently by shaming and burdening women and doctors. The law (which you can look at here — it's HR 1595) mandates that a 34-item questionnaire be filled out by abortion ...

Sathya Sai Baba and Dr G.Venkataraman: Will They Disavow Their Idi Amin Fon
2009-10-01 23:09:00
Deputy head of the international Satahya Sai Organization and Head of Sai Global Radio G. Venkataraman?s ?Mr Idi Amin? Report (/Journals/Vol_05/01JAN07/11-pr-asanthi-diary) stands as an appalling affront to those who suffered at this monstrous dictator's hands. Note how Venkataraman, on Sai Global Radio, refers to Mr Idi Amin. I may add that it is interesting that Amin claimed to have a direct line to God. Did he have in mind, specifically, Sathya Sai Baba? Perhaps Amin scholars may have something among their files, and can let us all know. Here is what G. Venkataraman wrote:
Dr G. Venkataraman, Sathya Sai Baba?s Nuclear Boon Companion
2009-09-29 00:18:00
Robert Priddy is the former long-time head of the Sathya Sai Organization in Norway and a retired philosopher in the Social Sciences, University of Oslo. He has written insightfully on the extraordinary, often procrustean efforts of Sathya Sai Baba's head of Puttaparthi propaganda programs to rationalise his beliefs in Sathya Sai Baba. Though not a physical (actually, nuclear) scientist like Dr G. Venkataraman, he has an abiding interest in the sciences, and how a certain variety of scientists, in a great minority but with unfortunate influence far beyond their importance, falsely use science to buttress up their religious claims. The following information may be of particular value for journalistic and scholarly investigators, and also those institutions and agencies which the Sathya Sai cult in many countries attempts to influence - but without portraying their real agendas. For those who may like to hunt and peck among Priddy's writings on G. Venkataraman, I have excerpted fro...

2009-09-23 21:04:00
In a blunt challenge to his nation's critics, President Barack Obama says world leaders who once accused the United States of acting alone must now join with him to solve global crises rather than 'wait for America' to lead.

World, I still don't know you
2009-09-23 02:16:00
As you know, I call myself Worldman. But is this a justified name? When I look at the world map, it seems that there are a lot of "empties" left for me to carry that name. Looking at the Americas, I feel naked. I have been to the USA twice. I have never been to Canada and I want to go there. Central America is definitely a region that attires me. And in South America I want to see Chile and roam around in Patagonia.Europe is not so exiting for me anymore except Norway, where I have been several times, the Baltic States and the Balkans. Places where I will return. And then, of course, my "starter" in Russia, a few years ago, cries for more. All the way through to Vladivostok. I also care a lot for Turkey. My stay there just recalls sweet souvenirs.Africa is the continent I know the best and deeply. So, I have no travel plans for there. Except to go to Ghana and see my inlaws. I have not seen them since 25 years. They might be shocked when they see me.Asia, I just discovered it by com...

The New World of eCrime: Targeted Brand Attacks and How to Combat Them
2009-09-22 23:20:00
Nothing is more valuable to a business than its reputation. That is why brand attacks, which leverage a company's valuable brand for nefarious purposes, must be battled on every possible front. Brand attacks are the new form of eCrime, and they're being launched with new and rapidly evolving exploits, including phishing and—most recently—malware. In this paper, they discuss how brand attacks, and malware attacks in particular, have evolved and proliferated, becoming another one of the many varied and sophisticated types of eCrime that any security professional should be ready to confront. They outline the most effective strategies for those experts to pursue as they guard against reputational risk and diminished customer trust.Request Free!
