Gowhere Hip Hop at Columbia's Non Fiction Week writing for music panel
2009-12-05 22:15:00
Watch me break it down at Columbia College here in Chicago, as I speak on writing for music with co-panelists that include Brian DiCrescenzo, Music Editor of Time Out Chicago, Laura Emerick, Chicago Sun-Times Arts Editor, memoirist and former frontwoman for Zuzu's Petals Laurie Lindeen, and Fiction Writing Department faculty member and Ray Bradbury biographer Sam Weller. Thanks to everyone that came out for this and asked questions, as it was a really interesting discussion about the past, present, and more importantly the future of writing for music. The panelists ranged from a wide variety of different publications and expertise, which made for a very nice comparison on the different types of music critics out there and their opinions on...
Writing Posts This Week Was Hard
2009-12-04 14:13:00
Free photos are strange: that's either an index finger or a penis.People often ask me, "How do you come up with stuff to write about?" To which the answer is simple: Methamphetamines, alcohol, Jenkem, dropping out of school and unprotected sex. Still, this combination can only see you through so often. This week, I really had to stir up the dregs of my mind to create posts. I went and saw a movie on a Monday night with my roommate just so I'd have something to talk about for Wednesday. Oh, and thank God Obama deepened our involvement in Afghanistan, or I would have been short of material by yesterday. The problem is vacations--in this case, Thanksgiving break. I...
High School Research Papers: A Dying Breed
2009-11-29 15:50:00
In a new book titled Outliers: The Story of Success, Malcolm Gladwell, the sociologist and popular writer, claims that the best way to achieve expertise is to spend 10,000 hours honing your skills. The idea is not new. It has been captured for ages in the old proverb of "practice makes perfect." Unfortunately, in American education, the move seems to be in the opposite direction. Writing is one of the most important skills that schools can teach. Yet, high schools are going to shorter and shorter assignments, often to the point of requiring no papers at all.
What Other Folks Are Writing
2009-11-28 19:30:00
I just did a segment on WGN's ChicagoNow Radio -- fun talking with host Bill Leff about who's going to be the replacement for Scott, what the biggest challenge facing CPS is right now, and why I blog a bout Chicago from Brooklyn.  But that's not the only thing going on.  Here's a quick media roundup to let you know what some of the other outlets are writing about of late, with a thumbnail assessment.  Let me know if I miss anything big, or if you liked (or hated) one of the articles in particular....

Postcard fiction writing prompt: bottlecap
2009-09-16 12:45:00
Hemingway said a story could be written in a little as six words, and used the example "For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn." to make his case.In 100 words or less, write for us a postcard fiction story-- that is, a micro-flash fiction story, a very, very short story, but a whole story-- in the comments section. Your story must feature this particular bottlecap in some way, but otherwise can be about absolutely anything at all. The winner will be profiled in an upcoming post. Ready, set, go!...
My Writing Tools
2009-09-13 07:48:00
I’ve been writing since I was eleven years old, when I wrote my first book. I first started writing in my father’s old Air Force writing kit. I’d just replace the notebooks after I’d filled them. When I’d finish writing a story long-hand, I’d type up the final version. (I was probably the only eleven-year-old back then who had her own typewriter.) The tools have gotten more sophisticated over the years. Being the tech geek that I am, I had one of the first home computers when they came out in the early 80’s. Back when they were still big, clunky machines that often crashed just for the heck of it. Back before the internet was widely available, when research still meant a trip to the library. Back when printing out a manuscript meant tearing each piece of paper, page by page, off one long perforated ream, after the painfully slow dot-matrix printer had finally stopped clattering. I’ve progressed through the years all the way up to my cu...

P. C. Ocampo wrote a new blog post: 1095: Writing and Righting Something There was an emergency drill this morning. I guess it isn’t called a fire drill anymore because it’s discriminative to other types of disasters like earthquakes and typhoons. Another difference, besides the announcements posted all over the walls, is that we were now asked to gather at the south stretch of the circumferential road instead of ...

What is good art writing worth to you? A challenge for our audience
2009-08-11 18:47:00
I had another post planned for today, but for once I want to continue the conversation on as a new post.   When we left off on comment 24 of yesterday's post by Joyce Owens, we were in the throes of good discussion about what a good review is. Dawoud had offered this New York Times review as an example of the quality writing that's needed today.       I concur. It is a very good review. And presumably an expensive review. I have no idea what the pay scale is, but my guess is the sum total of that article, with editorial review, would be over $700. To write a piece like that takes - again I'm guessing -...
House Renovation (or what i’ve been doing instead of writing)
2009-08-11 03:40:00
I’m having a hard time – you can tell. Just look at the tone of the last several months of posts! And I have really nothing to note except for the same. And since nothing has actually happened, I don’t write. And I don’t write. Because I get tired, too, of the same conversation. I realize it’s my journal, but man. A little variety would be great. No, really. I’ve run out of ways to say the same thing. The lack of writing has made me retreat a bit in the other online things of my life too. And in it’s place I’ve been doing some home renovations. Long needed… We’ve lived here 3 years now. Nothing too drastic. We don’t have the skills or money to do it ourselves, and we certainly don’t have the money to hire it out for the bigger stuff. So, we’re just doing what we can paint and such wise. And writing down the things that cost money, so that when our situation does turn around, we can prioriti...
Death of the Novelist #5

Yes, he read it all right. He looked at me as if I had a swollen cheek, looked sidelong into the corner, and even tittered in embarrassment. He crumpled the manuscript needlessly and grunted. Ebook Writing - 4 New Ways to Make Money Through Ebook Writing
2009-08-03 10:09:00
You can make money from your ebooks by using them as lead and traffic generators or viral marketing tools. However, the fastest and most popular means to convert them to instant cash is by selling them online. Here's how you can do this:1. Sales letters. Start by creating sales letters that contain all the benefits that your ebooks can offer. Your sales letters must be well-written and they must speak volumes about your expertise. Send these to your opt-in list.2. Follow-up. You don't need to wait for a couple of months for your prospects to reply to your sales letters. Be proactive and contact them. Send them follow-up emails or call them up. Give them compelling reasons to buy your ebooks. You may need to create a sense of urgency if these people sound undecided during the call.3. Offer free chapters. This is one of the best ways to boost your ebook sales. What you can do is to offer a couple of your chapters to your prospective buyers. Make sure that you give these people enoug...
On avoiding writing...
2009-07-22 17:23:00
"Usually, writers will do anything to avoid writing. For instance, the previous sentence was written at one o'clock this afternoon. It is now a quarter to four. I have spent the past two hours and forty-five minutes sorting my neckties by width, looking up the word 'paisley' in three dictionaries, attempting to find the town of that name on 'The New York Times Atlas of the World' map of Scotland, sorting my reference books by width, trying to get the bookcase to stop wobbling by stuffing a matchbook cover under its corner, dialing the telephone number on the matchbook cover to see if I should take computer courses at night, looking at the computer ads in the newspaper and deciding to buy a computer because writing seems to be so difficult on my old Remington, reading an interesting article on sorghum farming in Uruguay that was in the newspaper next to the computer ads, cutting that and other interesting articles out of the newspaper, sorting -- by width -- all the interesting ...

Next Stop: The Naked Killer, Dave McKean Weekend, Summer Writing at DePaul
2009-07-16 18:00:00
The Neo-Futurists present a staged reading of the 1992 Hong Kong film The Naked Killer: how the bloody action and over the top drama will play out is anyone's guess. Part of their eighth annual "film fest", It Came From The Neo-Futurarium VIII: Legend of the Neo-Futurarium, happens at 8pm, 5153 N. Ashland at Foster. Artist/writer/director and frequent Neil Gaiman-collaborator Dave McKean will be signing at Challengers Comics tonight (6-8pm, 1845 N. Western Ave. 2R). But wait, there's more: a weekend-long film festival at the historic Portage Theatre, full of his silent film-inspired art, and a showing of MirrorMask where McKean himself will preside. DePaul's First Annual Summer Writing Conference takes place Saturday. Part of a partnership with the Chicago...

2009-06-18 21:16:00
I got this comment the other day on an older post:I think that "Sweetie" seems like a very smart woman!!!!! The post was one about how Sweetie has been throwing out my t-shirts here and there and how I was fighting back by getting new t-shirts without telling her. When I saw the comment, I laughed and thought I'll have to tell Sweetie about that later. Then, I thought: I should write a post about that, and claim that I suspect that it was Sweetie who actually left that comment. So later on, I said to Sweetie: "Someone left a comment today on a post on my blog, saying how they thought you were smart."Sweetie didn't respond immediately and I said "So I'm going to republish it and make a joke that it must have been you."That's when Sweetie confessed that it was her who left the comment, anonymously. So that's what our marriage has progressed to: Sweetie is opting to make it appear that anonymous Internet readers are supporting her in our debates.

2009-06-13 13:26:00

The Art of Ebook Writing at Your Fingertips - From the Planning to the Mark
2009-06-13 13:24:00
When it comes to ebook writing, you can't ignore the marketing perspective of it altogether. No one can actually make money writing anything without thinking about how well they're going to sell it later on. The e-book competition online is tight, and there's only so many areas that ebook writing can cover. If you're thinking about writing one, and your chosen topic has already been written about a thousand times, there are still ways for you to win the race.Orient yourself about your readersCompetitive products, in general, are made, packaged, and publicized to suit the needs and taste of their target consumers. When you're writing, the same principle should run through your veins. Before writing it, figure out who you're writing for in the first place. To get this information, you can probably conduct a small and manageable surve...
