Yahoo’s Late Entry in Video Content Won’t Matter, Believes Vishal M
2012-02-07 07:10:00
We had recently reported about the Yahoo’s entry into Video Content Delivery for Indians. Mr. Vishal Maheshwari [VS] spoke to Pravda Godbole [PG] of Business Standard. Below are some excerpts. PG inquired exactly what we had been wondering. Won’t the late entry prove the reason for being sidetracked? VS reasoned that it won’t because Yahoo is not just a simple Video sharing website. Its proposition is to offer “strictly original, fully licensed video content”. Yahoo believes there is a huge demand for “premium licensed video content in India”. Yahoo has taken the first initiative to offer just that. How does Yahoo go about doing that? As a premium video destination, Yahoo will not wait for up loaders. Further Yahoo, won’t simply bombard its users with random videos. Its Content Optimization Relevance Engine (CORE) will offer personalization, helping users discover content of their interest. Content like full-length movies, Bollywood, sports, news, lifestyle...

Yahoo To Start Inserting Ads To Its Media Content. Get Ready For Commercial
2012-01-24 07:59:00
Yahoo! will soon offer Marketing agencies an opportunity to insert their advertisements into Yahoo’s multimedia content. A while ago, Yahoo had made foray, albeit late into the world of online streaming of movies. Yahoo, at that time claimed it was doing so to offer original & professionally created content to its audiences. Now we know why it had intended to do so. At that time it even offered a web-exclusive release of Super-K an animation film. Yahoo had been planning this for quite some time. We had first reported Yahoo’s spreading of its wings in Sep 2011. Hence this should not come as surprise. Especially when Ad-spends in India, though are rising, the online display advertising business is a dismal 3.7 per cent of the total budget allocated for putting across products & brands. With gross under monetization of this lucrative, yet untapped field, Yahoo! has as its audience of about 30 Million Internet users who regularly consume online video content. In terms of c...

War Of Search Giants: Bing Beats Yahoo To Snag Second Place
2012-01-16 11:03:00
In the war of search engines comScore has revealed that Microsoft’s Bing has just surpassed Yahoo! Search. Bing & other MS sites fielded 2.75 Billion search requests as against Yahoo’s 2.65 Billion. In terms of US market’s share it was 15.1 % against 14.5% respectively. However, these two are nowhere near even when clubbed together against Google’s 12 Billion search requests or a whopping 66%. We tried to analyze the reasons for this upsurge: Yahoo has signed a 10 Year deal with Microsoft. With this deal Yahoo has tried to save money by relying on Microsoft to provide the bulk of its search technology. Microsoft actually gained from this deal by getting more requests to process and analyze over time. What this meant was Microsoft got ample opportunity to understand search preferences & trends. The Bing program has been bleeding money to the tune of US$ 7 Billion. This news could offer some solace to the company that heavily relies on Windows Operating Software &...

Yahoo Ponders Over Reducing It’s 40% Stake In Alibaba
2011-12-23 12:45:00
Internet giant Yahoo is considering selling a part of its stake in Alibaba, recent reports say. The recently troubled company has a 40% stake in Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and is mulling over the prospect of cutting down the share to 15%.  Yahoo had acquired a 40% stake in Alibaba, based in Hangzhou, eastern China, for about $1 billion in 2005. Alibaba, China’s biggest e-commerce company, wants to re-purchase its share in a tax-free manner from Yahoo. The deal values the assets at about $14 dollars a Yahoo share, pitching the Yahoo stake at about $17 billion. Yahoo would also sell off its stake in Yahoo Japan Corp. Alibaba doubled its efforts to buy back its share after the September sacking of its CEO, Carol Bartz, who had opposed the sale. With the change in management, the deal is moving forward, reports say. If it could, Yahoo would have wanted to hold on to it for a few more years. China’s e-commerce is entering a period of structured growth. Alibaba, through its Ta...

Users who wish to switch over to the new languages, can simply head over to Account Settings of their Yahoo Profile, add their preferred language and hit the ‘Save’ button. Yahoo Ready To Fight The Govt For User Privacy: Protecting Terrorists?
2011-11-28 01:30:00
Yahoo is in no mood to toe the line set by the Government of India. It has now approached the Delhi HC against the order of the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA). The Government of India attempted to make Yahoo an example for not complying with its rules. It had earlier slapped Rs. 11 Lakh  as penalty for its failure to provide email information of persons in national interest. Government of India had asked Yahoo to surrender information of about 11 Yahoo IDs & the IP addresses through which they were accessed. These ids are supposedly used by Islamic terrorists and Maoists & GoI felt it could invoke the Section 28 of the Information Technology (IT) Act on the grounds of National Security. Yahoo refused to comply or pay the fine stating it was bound by confidentiality agreements & that could not be breached.  GoI did not buy the argument & slapped the fine. All this started when GoI received large number of emails that claimed responsibility for the Delhi...

Microsoft’s Attempts Again To Gobble-Up Yahoo: Signs Non-Disclosure A
2011-11-25 07:30:00
Despite losing in its US$44.6 billion attempt to acquire the company in 2008, Microsoft has reportedly signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) that will allow it to take a closer look at Yahoo! Inc.’s financial information to help it consider financing a bid. Microsoft, along-with private equity firms Silver Lake and TPG Capital are keenly interested in a trove of riches that could be unlocked by providing stronger management to the failing internet giant. Today’s Yahoo is certainly in a much weaker position than it was in 2008, having fallen behind Google and newer Internet players like Facebook. However, Yahoo still remains a formidable entity, with its News site alone getting 81.2 million unique visitors in August & there are attempts to get back on track. However, this time around, the signing of NDA is not for Microsoft’s own takeover attempt. It seems the agreement is to help others or a team to consider acquisition. A growing number of parties have reportedly signe...

Yahoo! India Launches Free Video Service: Why Such A Late Entry?
2011-11-23 14:18:00
When it comes to video services on the web, Youtube takes the cake. They have a staggering amount of content and live-streams and have grown tremendously in the Indian market with so many brands running campaigns on the site. Now Yahoo! has stepped into the arena with the launch of their newest video service. You must be thinking that ‘Aren’t these guys a little late to the party?’ Yes, they are but this video service might still have some potential. The distinction between Yahoo! Video and Youtube is that Yahoo! Video will only feature licensed and original videos whereas Youtube has all kinds of licensed and user generated content. In order to set this up, Yahoo! India has collaborated with 35 content providers including NDTV, Star TV, Shemaroo and others. That looks like a pretty solid line-up. This will the key to Yahoo! Video’s success in India. Yahoo has previously launched Movieplex which provides users with full length movies for free. This was a move to counter Yo...

Yahoo! India keeps surprising us. A while ago, it appeared that Yahoo was slowly removing its hand from India strategically. The typical super-hero film (accessible in both English and Hindi) explores escapades in Dreamzone. Yahoo Powers Bing To Take On Google
2011-09-09 14:39:00
Latest news says that Yahoo’s organic search results are scheduled for transition to Microsoft Bing for the Indian market by mid-September, 2011. Recent statistics have shown some interesting happenings in the search engine world. In March 2011 – Bing surpasses Yahoo! as second most popular search engine worldwide and in month of August 2011 – Yahoo, Bing Beat Google in Search Success Rate. With competitors like Yahoo and Bing, Google always has its hands full in trying to improve not only search results but also appropriate companies to acquire, and they have done well in both. News from rival camp, especially Yahoo, has a tendency of not being that upbeat. Two days back Yahoo made news for terminating CEO Carol Bartz. She had been instrumental in bringing about the collaboration deal with Microsoft Bing to fruition. Agreements of the deal are in practice now and Yahoo data has been powering Bing web master tools for a small time now. Back in August 2010, Yahoo! announce...

Yahoo has re-launched Yahoo Clues, a web based trending service that allows users to see what other people are searching on the web. The product initially was launched last year in November. This is being seen as a move which would bring Yahoo and Google head to head for another showdown. The map feature covers both Local and Global search aspects. Although, Google is considered as a synonym for search with over 1billion users, Yahoo of late has been trying to cope up with the rapidly changing search environment. It planned to introduce new search based features like the decision to release Direct Search in India. Google, Yahoo, Facebook Mark World IPv6 Day
2011-06-08 13:01:00
Many experts predict that internet is fast running out of addresses. Every device connected to internet has a unique address called its IP (Internet Protocol) address. The current standard for IP addresses is IPv4. IPv4 has about 4.3 billion addresses. But, they will fall short of the growing need of web in few years’ time. To address this problem Internet Society in association with some of the major websites is marking 8th June as The World IPv6 Day. On this day more than 400 websites including Google, Yahoo, Facebook and Bing will enable IPv6 on their websites. We believe this is an important milestone, as IPv6 is the only long-term solution to IPv4 address exhaustion, and its deployment is crucial to the continued growth of the open Internet, Google said an official blog post. IPv6 will solve the problem of shortage of IP addresses. But, the transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is not smooth. IPv4 and IPv6 networks are not compatible with each other. Also, internet service provid...

$20 to $30 Million Paid By Yahoo To Acquire The Into Now App
2011-04-26 07:40:00
The media based check in app Into Now has been acquired by Yahoo. Techcrunch reports that Yahoo coughed up $20 to $30 million to acquire the app. Into Now is just like fourquare for TV shows and movies. It gives users the ability to identify TV content and share them with their friends through Twitter and Facebook. This technology is called SoundPrint. It is a very advanced and sophisticated, and that itself makes this purchase worth it. It changes the way users consume, share and engage with the content and the advertisers.  The app had a million check ins just a month after the launch and has scored partnerships with PepsiCo and MTV in the past. Instead of manually searching the movie on IMBD for ratings and reviews,  fire up the Into Now app. And let the app identify the movie, once the identification is done you can share it or discuss it with your friends on Twitter or Facebook. The acquisition is pretty impressive considering the fact that Into Now had launched just fou...

2011-03-31 09:58:00
Remember the Search Direct from Yahoo which we had reported about a week back? For those of you who missed it, here is a brief review. Search Direct is Yahoo’s version of Google Instant. But, according to Yahoo it is not as it offer “rich content” and “goes beyond a list of blue links.” Blake Irving, Chief Product Officer at Yahoo and Shashi Seth, senior vice president, Yahoo! Search and Marketplaces launched this product at a press conference. You can take the product for a test run at search.yahoo.com. Now, Prabhakar Raghavan, Chief Scientist and Senior Vice-President and Head of Yahoo! Labs has shared his views about Search Direct saying, “Users do not come to a search engine with just search strings. They expect some useful information. You c...

Search Direct – Yahoo’s Version Of Google Instant With Rich Con
2011-03-24 06:25:00
Search Direct — that is what Yahoo has named its new product that functions like Google Instant and anticipates queries as you type them. Google had launched Google Instant in September 2010, and was welcomed with mixed reactions, but soon became popular amongst the masses. Yahoo, in an attempt to push new life into its search, is also adopting the real-time route. According to Yahoo, their product “goes beyond a list of blue links” and provides direct answers to search queries through rich content. Shashi Seth, senior vice president, Yahoo! Search and Marketplaces, said in a press release, “With today’s launch, direct answers – not the search results page – is the primary focus. We are redefining the search process and prominently displaying direct answers where search decisions are being made.” So, how does Search Direct work? After you click on the search box on search.yahoo.com, a drop-down shows ten trending searches. Once you start typing i...

Yahoo Has Sold Delicious For $5 Million?
2011-03-14 06:08:00
Yahoo has sold Delicious for $5 million, according to a report by TheNextWeb. In December, last year, we had reported about an internal Yahoo document getting leaked, which informed that the company intended to “sunset” Delicious, YahooBuzz, Yahoo Bookmarks, Yahoo Picks, MyBlogLog, Alltheweb and Altavista. Yahoo did not decline the report and spokeswoman Dana Lengkeek stated, “We continuously evaluate and prioritise our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months such as Yahoo! Buzz, our Traffic APIs, and others. We will communicate specific plans when appropriate.” Now, the report from TNW states that they have received “a solid report from a reliable and proven source that Yahoo has sold social bookmarking site Delicious for $5m+.” According to the report a competitor of Delicious with a “strong user base” has bought the product. If the claims of the report are true then it would be a victory for ...

Yahoo Closes Another One – MyBlogLog
2011-02-25 09:30:00
We knew this was coming, back in December when a leaked screenshot from Yahoo! listed sites like Delicious and MyBlogLog in the ’sunset’ column. It hasn’t been a particularly good week from them in terms of tech coverage either. A 37signals post on ‘What Happens After Yahoo Acquires You‘ received plenty of attention. Of course, Yahoo isn’t the only big company that is guilty of this, a post on GigaOM holds Google culpable too and goes on to analyze why some startups tend not to do too well after they are acquired. It didn’t help Yahoo that just days before this a Yahoo engineer’s complaint about Yahoo-owned Flickr not supporting modern web technologies was picked up by a lot tech blogs. They could have picked a better time to announce the ’sunsetting’ of one their acquisitions. Be that as it may, they didn’t. MyBlogLog users yesterday, received an email saying that Yahoo will discontinue the service from May 24, 201...

Adios, Yahoo!
2011-02-10 21:34:00
I have now almost completely abandoned Yahoo! and all of its services. I’d stopped using their “search engine” a long, long, long time ago, and their Web-based email service is but a distant memory to me. I don’t use Yahoo Messenger either, except when I’m online on Nimbuzz, where I’d enrolled my Yahoo! account and ...

Google Leads The Search Market While Bing Grows And Yahoo Falls
2011-01-19 06:45:00
Although Facebook has dethroned Google as the top website of 2010, Google can proudly claim that it is the largest search engine that exists today. No wonder the term “search it” has been replaced by “google it”. A leader in measuring the digital world, comScore has revealed that Google led the explicit core search market in December with 66.6 percent of searches conducted. The report from comScore states: Google Sites led the U.S. explicit core search market in December with 66.6 percent market share (up 0.4 percentage points), followed by Yahoo! Sites with 16.0 percent and Microsoft sites with 12.0 percent (up 0.2 percentage points). Ask Network accounted for 3.5 percent of explicit core searches, followed by AOL LLC Network with 1.9 percent. Google is obviously the biggest search engine present today, but we should also give credit to Microsoft for the growth their search engine, Bing, has attained recently. A report from Experian Hitwise states: Google a...

Facebook Takes Down Yahoo, Eyeing Google And Microsoft?
2010-12-27 15:00:00
Facebook accounts for 1 out of 4 page views, states the article on Time which proclaimed Mark Zuckerberg as Time’s Person of the Year 2010. That is not an exaggerated figure or a phrase to attract people to Facebook. Facebook needs no such gimmick. The social network connects not just people but the web itself, with its “likes,” “shares” and “connects.” Now, with Facebook Personalisation out of the box, our Facebook experience is added to every page we visit. Such is the reach of Facebook, that it has more pageviews than the next 99 biggest websites combined. comScore has officially announced that Facebook is now the the third largest website in the world. It replaced Yahoo from this spot and is behind Microsoft and Google. Facebook got 648 million unique visitors during November, while Yahoo got 630 million visitors. Microsoft and Google got 869 million and 970 million, respectively. As the graph shows, back in October, Facebook and Yahoo ...
