Acer intros New LCD Displays
2008-05-07 03:32:00
Acer intros New LCD Displays Acer has introduced a couple of new display lines for the masses - the Business line will see both workers and home users enjoy a monitor that is flexible enough to tilt up 15 degrees or down by 5 while allowing 35 degree pivoting in either direction without adjusting the stand. You also get contrast ratios of 2,000:1 or 3,000:1 for most models, with a 5ms average pixel response time eliminating most ghosting. As for the Value series, the flexible arm is missing at the cost of a lower price and greater portability. The Value series will see users collapse the display flat and ferry it between rooms, although it does make me wonder just how often is somebody going to do that. Monitors from either line will range from $185 till $399, making them extremely affordable. (Via UberGizmo, the Gadgets News Blog.)

Toshiba pushing its facial recognition in Satellite series laptops
2008-05-04 16:59:00
Toshiba pushing its facial recognition in Satellite series laptopsAlthough we have previously mentioned Toshiba’s face recognition technology in our coverage of the Satellite A300 and M300 and P300, it is only now that Toshiba is officially promoting the said feature. Toshiba has employed this technology to provide Satellite owners an additional way of securing their dear Toshiba machines from unauthorized users. The technology grants or denies access to people who might use the laptops depending on whether they are registered users. To use the face recognition technology to secure their laptops, users need to have their face profiled by the laptop’s webcam during a short setup process. Once profiled, the laptop’s webcam would use this to reference people who are about to use the laptops as recognized by the laptop’s webcam. If a user’s face has not been profiled before, then the laptop would deny them access to the machine. The use of face recognition technology suits well ...

Dell XPS 730 H2C Edition
2008-05-04 16:59:00
Dell XPS 730 H2C Edition Dell wants to get back to the top of its game by releasing the XPS 730 H2C edition which targets hardcore gamers, making this gaming desktop machine one of the most advanced of its kind on the planet - at least for a week or so. You know how fast computer parts get obsolete. Inside you will be able to find quad-core processors, quad GPU graphics solutions (!), and enough space to store up to four hard drives - which pretty much sums it all up. Judging by the specifications alone, you can be sure that your wallet will definitely suffer as the air-cooled Dell XPS 730 is priced from $3,999 upwards while the XPS 730 H2C costs at least a cool thousand more before it hits the sky. Of course, for that price you also get swanky materials like 2.4mm anodized aluminum on the XPS 730 H2C in Victory Red and Stealth Blue or brushed aluminum in Silver on the air-cooled XPS 730.(Via UberGizmo, the Gadgets News Blog.)

Sony BRAVIA DAV-F200 home cinema systemSony have unveiled their latest all-in-one home cinema system, the BRAVIA DAV-F200, and whether or not you like Japanese company’s products you have to admit they have a knack for design.  Consisting of a glass-fronted, wall-mountable control center with slot-load DVD, 1080p upscaling, a USB port for plugging in memory sticks or PMPs containing MP3s and Sony’s own DMPORT expansion slot.  The latter can be outfitted with Bluetooth or WiFi adaptors, among other things, allowing the DAV-F200 to stream music from a wireless device.405W of power are shared between the two stereo speakers and separate subwoofer, capable of creating pseudo-surround sound.  As well as DVDs and CDs, the DAV-F200 is compatible with MP3, Windows Media Audio, DivX and JPEG formats.  A range of PMP docks are available for the DMPORT, including models such as the iPod, Sony’s own Walkman range, Sony Ericsson Walkman phones and more.If you’re pairing the system w...

FC Mobile Portable NES for classic gaming on the move
2008-04-29 20:29:00
FC Mobile Portable NES for classic gaming on the moveNot quite as cool as fitting a full NES console into one of the actual cartridges, FC Mobile’s portable NES console does actually let you play the games while on the move.  Running on a few AA batteries, the handheld has a 2.4-inch LCD screen and internal stereo speakers (together with a headphone socket if all that 8-bit music starts to frustrate your fellow passengers on the train).  Alternatively, you can hook it up to your TV via the included AV cable.Apparently compatible with North American NES cartridges, rather than the Japanese Famicom games, so far eBay seems to be the only way to get hold of the FC Mobile device.  Expect to pay between $40 and $50 (with no games included).  As ever, watch out for shipping fees and check feedback before you buy.(Via SlashGear.)

Planex DigiJuke NAS snags YouTube and BitTorrent video -- jams it down the Wii, Xbox 360, iPod... and throat of MPAAHere it is copyright bandits, the single biggest reason (besides silicone) to make a Hollywood studio notice you: the MZK-NAS02SG1T network attached storage device from Planex. The main selling point behind the ¥54,799 (about $524) 1TB Gigabit Ethernet block is the claim to 'universal access' for all your devices. That little trick comes courtesy of its DigiJuke browser for searching and tagging the BitTorrent and YouTube content you want downloaded in the appropriate PSP and iPod (MPEG-4), Wii (FLV), or TV (MPEG-2) format for in-home or on-the-go viewing. The NAS also streams audio and video to your iTunes laptops or desktops, DLNA TV, Xbox 360, or other compliant device in the home. A front-facing USB 2.0 jack offers one-touch dubbing of USB sticks while a second around back offers ready storage expansion. It ships with a pair of 3.5-inch 500GB drive which you can...

Hawking parabolic WiFi adaptor boosts range by 600%

Hawking parabolic WiFi adaptor boosts range by 600%Long-distance WiFi accessories are nothing new, in fact you can craft one yourself from something as innocent as a Pringles tube, but Hawking Technologies have an option if hacking isn’t your forte.  The Hi-Gain Wireless-300N is a high-gain dish adaptor, that hooks up via USB and can supposedly extend wireless range by up to 600-percent.  Supporting WiFi in b, g and n flavors, they’re also claiming up to twelve times the data throughput.Claimed to be ‘the most powerful 802.11n USB network adapter on the market’, the Wireless-300N supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 encryption.  Since the dual-antenna is highly directional, they’re also trying to sell it on the idea that you can avoid signal interference by pointing it away from other electronics.  I’m not sure that’s something I’ve ever experienced using WiFi, but I could imagine it might be useful to specifically target a base station in an area with lots of wireless...

Fujitsu LOOX R 12-inch ultraportable updated
2008-04-23 00:34:00
Fujitsu LOOX R 12-inch ultraportable updatedWhen Fujitsu announced its LOOX R notebook last December it was the first model we’d seen with Intel’s Penryn chipset. Of course, last year’s laptops are old news now, and so the company has updated the range with an Intel Core 2 Duo SL7100 processor running at 1.2GHz. It still has a 12.1-inch LCD display, but Fujitsu have switched to LED backlighting for better clarity and improved battery life. There are also seven new, swappable covers available, one of which features a small puppy. I’m not sure why you’d want a puppy on your laptop, but then perhaps that just means I’m not the target audience. More to my tastes are the 2GB or 4GB of RAM, the fact that the screen is 1,280 x 800 resolution and the optional 7.2Mbps WWAN module (not specified, but presumably HSDPA).There’s also a dual-layer DVD rewriter and WiFi in a/b/g/n flavors. No word on how the updated LOOX R compares to the old in terms of Fujitsu’s claimed 9.7hr...

24 karat Gold Plated MacBook Air

24 karat Gold Plated MacBook AirThe MacBook Air by itself is pretty pricey considering the kind of hardware you get, but Computer Choppers has decided to go the extra mile by producing a 24 karat gold plated version of the MAckBook Air instead. I don't think anyone who purchased this will be using it in public, considering the $5,000 price tag attached to it along with the dangers of scratches and knocks when carried around. It will still be light though despite all that bling - King Midas would've approved of this back in his day. (Via UberGizmo, the Gadgets News Blog.)
