iPhone 3G hands-on
2008-06-10 00:04:00
iPhone 3G hands-onSorry, we don't have pictures but Apple took us into a dramatically lit back-room to check out the new iPhone 3G. Here's what you need to know: We did a quick data test -- at our location we went from 104Kbps on the EDGE iPhone to 215Kbps on the 3G model. 2x ain't bad, yo. The enable/disable 3G setting is real, and buried a few menus deep. There is no automatic switching, Apple just assumes you'll leave 3G on, and that the iPhone has the juice to support that usage. It's tri-band 3G, as we reported the other day. This same phone will ship worldwide. WiFi is still 802.11b/g, no support for n yet. Yes, that GPS is A-GPS, just as we mentioned. Geotagging photos is a thumbs-up. We were deep indoors though, so native GPS wasn't working and we couldn't get a clear idea of satellite acquisition time. The screen looks exactly the same -- maybe a tiny bit brighter, but the unit was new, so it'd be negligible. The camera is identical to the fi...

White 16 gig iPhone
2008-06-10 00:04:00
White 16 gig iPhoneSure the iPhone 3G specs are pretty sweet, but what about the fact that you can get one in white? Apple has posted a gallery showing off the new iPhone in all its glory, both in black and the limited edition white (16 gig model only).Personally, I think the white one is pretty snazzy (to borrow a word from Steve). What say you? Sound off in the comments.(Via The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW).)

Qisda showcases dual-mode GSM / WiMAX-compatible mobile
2008-06-10 00:02:00
Qisda showcases dual-mode GSM / WiMAX-compatible mobileFar from being the first dual-mode handset we've seen (heck, it's not even the first WiMAX-friendly dualie), Qsida's recently showcased slider is still quite intriguing. The currently unnamed cellphone supports both 802.16e WiMAX as well as GSM / GPRS / EDGE networks, and just in case you're hankering for another way to get connected, there's a built-in WiFi module too. Reportedly, the smartphone is a test device used in the M-Taiwan initiative to promote WiMAX, and aside from handling voice calls via (almost) any flavor of wireless protocol, you'll also find Windows Mobile 6.1 running the show. Granted, this particular unit wasn't down with 3G, but a spokesperson was adamant that such a handset would be added to its portfolio eventually.(Via Engadget CELLS.)

RAmos V8 is 3 inches in the Box
2008-06-10 00:01:00
RAmos V8 is 3 inches in the BoxWe’ve been pretty excited about an upcoming player from RAmos. Wouldn’t you be excited when you read that possible specs include a 4.3-inch touch screen, WiFi and even Net radio. But it turns out the V8 is a more typical RAmos PMP than we had expected: 3-inch screen, 4GB storage with a Rockchip processor and PlayFX… I hope next time RAmos hypes up a PMP, it will at least get some specs right. Price is 599 Yuan or $86.(Via PMP Today.)

WINDOW G30: Old iPod Clone or Sony Walkman Wannabe?
2008-06-10 00:01:00
WINDOW G30: Old iPod Clone or Sony Walkman Wannabe?WINDOW’s G30 PMP is a 2.8-inch player. It fits in your pocket, plays RMVB, AVI, FLV and Lossless audio files. Our source article also mentions the rather brick-like form factor of the G30 is comparable to old iPod models. I beg to differ. Though the G30 can be quite thin from some angles, it does not remind me of the iPod classic or any old iPod model but of something far older than iPod. This PMP has a fascinating similarity to my old 80’s Walkman Portable Cassette Player. Yep, this WINDOW is a Sony.We found an 8GB version already being sold here for $114.99.(Via PMP Today.)

AvMap adds Breathalyzer to GPS
2008-06-09 23:59:00
AvMap adds Breathalyzer to GPSPreviously, NDrive’s G400 was the only GPS to have an integrated breathalyzer, but now, the Italian company AvMap, has followed and added a breathalyzer into their own GPS. With a GPS unit dubbed the Geosat 6 Drive Safe, it only seems appropriate that it includes a safety feature such as a breathalyzer. The Geosat 6 Drive Safe comes with a built-in breathalyzer that can tell you your blood alcohol level and let you know if it is advisable to drive, or if you should call up a friend. ‘Thanks to Geosat 6 Drive Safe, drivers can now check their blood alcohol level before driving. The new Geosat 6 Drive Safe comes with built-in sensor for alcohol test: this will allow the driver to decide whether they are sober enough to drive. Taking the test is very easy: select the alcohol tests button on the touch screen, get close to the sensor and blow to get the results immediately to see whether it is wise for you to be behind the wheel.’Furthermore, it is set ...
Medion's Akoya Mini laptop gets pictured at Computex
2008-06-09 23:58:00
Medion's Akoya Mini laptop gets pictured at Computex The last time we saw this downsized Atom-based laptop, it was looking staid and proper in a press shot. Finally someone has gotten their hands on this thing, and we've got to say -- it looks pretty handsome (even if it is a rebadged, recolored MSI Wind, and a dead ringer for the Mini-Note). Specs seem unchanged, with a 10-inch 1024 x 800 display, 80GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.3-megapixel webcam, and the price appears to be holding at €399 (or about $630) as well. Still no word on when or if this is going to hit the states, but we've got our fingers crossed.(Via Engadget Laptop s.)
ASUS shows off G50V / G71V gaming laptops
2008-06-09 23:58:00
ASUS shows off G50V / G71V gaming laptopsWait a second -- you mean ASUS actually had something other than subnotes at Computex? Tucked away in some surely obscure corner were these two gems: the 15.6-inch G50V and 17-inch G71V. The first of the two rigs was packing a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT graphics card, a WXGA '3D display,' Intel's Centrino 2 platform, support for 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a pair of 320GB SATA drives and a sturdy keyboard built for gamers. The larger sibling was said to posses the same GPU and platform, though it was sporting twin 500GB drives and support for DDR3 memory / CPU overclocking. Beyond that, we're left to wonder what on Earth could be hiding behind those somewhat unsightly shells, but hopefully ASUS won't keep us wondering for long.(Via Engadget Laptops .)

iHome Announces Computer Speakers , iH69 and iH70, with Built-in Dock So I recently conceded and bought a desk for my bedroom. With in a matter of weeks my table top was cluttered with papers, gadgets, computer speakers and needless to say the dock for my iPhone. Yes, minimizing clutter is a bid deal to me and hence why iHome’s newest product, the iH69s and IH70s would be a sweet addition. But unfortunately, they aren’t built for true iPhone use - they’re actually built for any docking iPods - as they probably aren’t shielded like the Altec Lansing T612. iHome has included their patented Reson8 speaker chambers (to give it bass) and have also included a remote, computer port (USB?), a sync switch, headphone jack and volume controls. The iHome iH69 and iH70 are available for pre-order for $99.99 and $129.99 respectively and will hit retail outlets ’soon’.If you think I skimped on the details, check the press release after the ‘leap’(Via Gadget Review.)
T-Mobile ollies with Tony Hawk Sidekick LX
2008-06-06 16:54:00
T-Mobile ollies with Tony Hawk Sidekick LXThe rumored Tony Hawk edition of the Sidekick LX is said to be making its first public appearance today, looking every bit the part with a 'skateboard look and feel' made complete with 'grip-tape-texture' and the skateboarding icon's name plastered across the display's bezel. This one isn't just about branding, though -- it's being said that T-Mobile will use the occasion to launch a rather hearty LX firmware update that includes video recording, stereo Bluetooth, additional themes, some sort of video sharing capability, and more; it'll be available to all LX owners some time this summer via an over-the-air update. Meanwhile, the very special Tony Hawk piece should be made available to buyers in mid-July.(Via Engadget CELLS.)

Sanyo's Xacti HD1010 1080i camcorder shoots 300fps slow-mo
2008-06-06 16:51:00
Sanyo's Xacti HD1010 1080i camcorder shoots 300fps slow-moIn its battle with Sony for 1080i pistol grips, Sanyo just announced a minor, but notable update to its premium HD1000 Full HD MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 camcorder. The new HD1010 adds improved image processing and stabilization, new 'face chaser' technology for stills and video, and amusing new 300fps slow-motion mode. Nothing compared to Casio's freakish EX-F1 but a nice novelty for shooting the kids' sporting adventures. Sanyo also tossed in a new 7fps continuous still shot mode which snags images at the sensor's maximum 4 megapixel resolution. A minor bump for sure but it makes for a compelling offering at the (relatively) low asking price of $800 when it hits the US in July (Japan, June 20th).(Via Engadget.)

Mysterious Asus laptop with projector spotted at Computex

Mysterious Asus laptop with projector spotted at Computex What's this? An Asus laptop with built-in projector above the monitor? This curious computer was spotted plopped unceremoniously in a corner at Computex by PC Perspective. They report that the unlabeled machine's camera -- installed right at the top of the monitor bezel -- rotates and that the projector's performance is uncertain given the show's bright conditions. If this is something other than a floor prototype, we're awfully curious about battery life. Until then, we'll just have to fantasize about portable PowerPoints of doom. Sony Ericsson W760 MTV edition looks funkyDon't know about you, but I find the Sony Ericsson W760 to be one of the best feature phones on the market today. Previously, I thought the same of the award-winning W910 model, but that built-in GPS makes me love the newer model more. In addition, the W760 packs 2.2-inch QVGA screen, HSDPA, stereo Bluetooth, memory expansion slot, Walkman 3.0 music player, and a 3.2 megapixel camera.Specs wise, the MTV version is identical to the original Sony Ericsson W760. However, the original doesn't have that funky colored patters which I'm sure some people (especially younger crowd) will love. It kinda reminds me on the good ol' eighties and the music videos from that period. Don't you think so?(Via IntoMobile.)

Minox Rolleiflex AF 5.0 digicam takes you back -- way backUh, this is a Minox? It's not that we can't read labels, but considering the outfit's yawn-inducing offerings of late, we're a little stunned to see something so irresistible come out of its doors. The June-bound Rolleiflex AF 5.0 is a 'fully functioning, high precision replica of the world famous Rolleiflex 6x6 camera (scale 1:2),' and just like its inspiration, it produces square photographs and boasts a functioning hand crank. Thanks to modern technology, this edition steps it up with a 5-megapixel sensor, LCD monitor and a miniSD slot. Word on the street puts the black version at €299 ($461), while the entirely more stylish red model will demand €30 ($46) more. Still cheaper than an antique, we'd wager.(Via Engadget.)
