Google toolbar 5 review #2
2007-12-15 03:53:00
Great, after the first review, I’ve got another one to add on. In case you are wondering, Google toolbar 5 is the latest revision in testing for Internet Explorer 6 and above, and can be downloaded here. Google Find just turned my Internet Explorer into Firefox   Pressing Ctrl+F will no longer bring up a box that Microsoft put in. Rather, it will show up a toolbar at the bottom, similar to Firefox, that allows you to search for text in a page as you type. It will also highlight other occurences of text in the page. Of course, since Firefox already has that, Google doesn’t need to put that. In case you want to go back to the old-fashioned Ctrl+F search box, simply disable the “Find” tool via settings. “Up one level”, just like Windows Explorer Looks like Google decided to put in a new featured called “Up one level”. What this does is similar to what Windows Explorer does with a button with the same name. In Windows Explorer,  pre...

Yahoo shortcuts as a win-win situation
2007-12-14 10:32:00
Finally, a shortcut for making blog posts. Yahoo has practically narrowed down time needed to decorate your own posts by doing the homework for you - in the background. Whenever you write a post, Yahoo will lookup for certain images using it’s massive power and bring it straight to you. However, there’s that hidden potential it can bring - it may promote visitors to other sites as well, not just to your own. Currently it’s available as a plugin for Wordpress. (more…) © 2007 Tevine.

Google toolbar 5 - beta
2007-12-14 03:46:00
Google has silently dished out yet another update to its Google toolbar. Since it is in beta, always proceed with caution, though maybe in Google’s case, all betas are fairly stable enough (who says GMail can’t stay in beta for 2 years?). You can get the toolbar from this page. This toolbar is only available to Internet Explorer users. Interface  This beta seems to change quite a few usual things compared to the previous one. For one, the icons do look more nicer and organised, particular the smaller PageRank icon and separators. Though, the PageRank icon does give a sort of an eyestrain - it’s so tiny and hard to see, one even needs to guess what PR a site has because a unit difference in PR corresponds to a pixel difference (and, a pixel is really small). Overall, the older icons look unchanged, but I guess what concerns more is the features right? Right on to it. (more…) © 2007 Tevine.

phpBB 3 released
2007-12-13 18:01:00
phpBB 3 has been released and can be downloaded from the phpBB official site. Finally something can be said about free software being just as good as paid ones. For years now phpBB has been considered lower than other forum systems (particularly paid ones) in terms of quality. phpBB 3 marks an important upgrade to a freely available system, similar to going from Wordpress 1.0 to Wordpress 2.0. You may be wondering why I’m harping about this particular release unlike other stuff like SMF - it’s because phpBB 3 is certainly something that has changed significantly from it’s older self. Social bookmarks in a dropdown
2007-12-13 12:26:00
Social Dropdown has been recently released. Currently it supports a whole range of features. I guess this picture probably says it all: You can download Social Dropdown here. What Social Dropdown does It puts your bookmarklets into a dropdown so that it won’t occupy a lot of space in your posts (unlike most other similar plugins). The bookmarks are available via the little arrow beside ”Bookmark This!”. Of course clicking on “Bookmark This!” will show the list of bookmarks. This dropdown in itself can be organised into rows. Clicking on the little icons in the dropdown will submit the corresponding post. (more…) © 2007 Tevine.

w00t being the word of the year?
2007-12-13 03:38:00
It seems as many visitors wanted to add the word w00t to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, and FaceBook being runner up. W00t has been named the Word of the year (2007) by dictionary gurus from the Merriam-Webster. These were also voted and searched commonly. Famous words such as “Google” and “Blog” were added to the site’s dictionary database and server from winning the votes. © 2007 Tevine.

Splogs, and how to tackle them
2007-12-12 13:19:00
Spam blogs are the menace of blogs. Designed to scrap off content from a site, many blog owners find it frustrating that some people would simply not hesitate to profit from other people’s work. They take the form of blogs, and are created in the hopeful hopes that it cause the splog to look like it contains “quality content”. Find the splog and combat it Splogs have one characteristic - they are content scrappers. Most splogs are generally auto-blogs, while some are manually managed. Not to be mistaken for automobiles. An auto blog is one that updates itself without user intervention. This form of blog has it’s several variations in itself. Here are some common splogs that have appeared. Total copier Some splogs copy content completely from target sources. Generally this is targetted towards feeds that contain complete content. These splogs are the easiest to establish - and hence the most common. These sort of splog is quite easy to spot, because sometime...
Blackholing as SEO?
2007-12-11 15:13:00
Of course, Google have explicitly mentioned that backlinks will add to a site’s PageRank. However, through experience it is found that outbound links have an opposite effect to backlinks. So, before you add that link to your site, think again. Similarly, internal pages act as outbound links, except that you have more control over them. This is based on the assumption that links act as the path where the highly fluid link juice can flow. Thus, the theory might be useful in search engine optimisation (SEO). Blackholing? The idea of a blackhole is that it traps everything inside, letting little stuff come out. Link blackholing employs the same idea. Some backlinks, few outbound links. Of course, don’t forget internal pages - these links pass PageRank too. So, for ideal blackholing, you should have some backlinks, few internal links, few outbound links. Thus, it traps some link juice in your site. (more…) © 2007 Tevine.
Link black-holes you should watch out for
2007-12-11 14:05:00
If you studied quantum physics, you probably know about black holes. Even if you didn’t, you probably heard of it right? A link blackhole is like a blackhole - it eats links, but gives back few links that are taken into account by search engines in ranking. Generally, if they get popular enough, they would become a authority site - if many link to it. However, it may not generously give back the favors (but if you do manage to get a link from one of those link black-holes, they are considered incredibly high quality). (more…) © 2007 Tevine.

Google may treat sub-domains as folders
2007-12-10 11:30:00
Originally, sub-domains remained in the grey area, treated as more of an independent domain. Thus, multiple pages from the same site may appear at once in the results page in Google . Now, Google decided to finalize the decision to treat sub-domains as folders. This means that sub-domains under a domain will appear at most twice in the search results - similar to folders. In a Google results page, a domain can have at most 2 directories under it (indented). If these “directories” happen to be sub-domains, then it will also display another set of two. The change is a response to the number of repeated pages coming from the same domain for certain keywords. Although this was in effect for a few weeks now, no one actually noticed it until Google mentioned it at PubCon. Though, it might be a big problem for sites hosted by certain web hosts, where by individual sites are hosted on sub-domains. While the easiest solution is to probably get a domain, not everyone can ge...

phpBB 3 - in 3 days time
2007-12-10 06:05:00
phpBB 3 would be released in a few days time, specifically 13th December, as stated by a phpBB developer. For a few months now, phpBB 3 still remained in the development stages - so with anything that stays “beta” for a long time, expect plenty of upgrades over the previous versions. In case if you do not want to go around the web looking at what phpBB is all about, this article shall go into detail of what some big features you should be looking out for. Visually… phpBB has changed a lot, when compared to its previous incarnation of phpBB 2. The first thing everyone would notice is the stunningly nice interface - taking it into the same quality as that of VBulletin and IPB. Colors, buttons - almost everything. Well, if you would want to compare image-wise, there you go: Even the administration interface is revamped, with more stuff being accessible with less clicks. Features While phpBB 2 has the basic features a forum needs, phpBB 3 adds features that are ...

Social dropdown
2007-12-10 02:14:00
A beta version of the Social Dropdown plugin has been released on Tevine! This plugin helps put all your social bookmarks into one nice dropdown - accessible by clicking on a button. This effectively reduces clutter, and occupies little space on your page (unlike others which practically plastered tons of social bookmarking icons just below your post). In case if you do not know what is social bookmarking, it is bookmarking done socially - and you get traffic from it! Why is this in beta? Aside from giving me protection in case the plugin goes wrong, the plugin works great on newer browsers but not so for older ones. © 2007 Tevine.
How to: Make your websites XHTML friendly
2007-12-09 11:35:00
XHTML has grown in popularity ever since Wordpress and Wikipedia decided to show its love for standards. If you are wondering what XHTML is, you can say that it is another type of HTML altogether - similar, yet different. Generally, it is a pain to get a nicely validated site going, so this guide shall act as a walk-through to getting your site to pass training the test. Complete guest posting
2007-12-08 14:46:00
Originally we allowed only registered members to post their own posts on Tevine. Though, it is not very popular - so we decided to bring it one step further and make it completely guest posting! You no longer need an account in Tevine to guest post, making it completely guest posting. What is guest posting? Guest posting is like normal posting - except others are able to post in a blog they do not own. The direct benefit is that you get a little publicity from other visitors, and perhaps build some exposure to any sites you own. Non-registered versus registered While being not registered entitles you to being able to post posts in Tevine, it will render any future changes to the guest posting feature inaccessible to you. Being registered allows your post to appear on Tevine as early as possible, without it sitting in any moderation queue. Any requirements? When you guest post, your posts need to be at least 100 words in length (which should be quite okay, considering that there ...

DigitalPoint banned from AdSense? Nope!
2007-12-07 11:01:00
Whew… just because DigitalPoint forums have a blanked out Google ad in its forums, it spread out ripples appearing on other sites like Sphinn! Well, the thing is, DigitalPoint is an ad-revenue sharing forum, and a ban from Google Adsense is a scary thing, because it means everyone’s ad is in danger. But, wait, DigitalPoint recovered from this anyway… What? Ban?! Yes, DigitalPoint’s Google AdSense ads are blanked out. Google sometimes ban URLs, in this case the forum. It is not really known why for. Though, this screenshot does say something… Why was it banned (probably)? When looking at Google AdSense analytics, DigitalPoint was banned, because it was not found (server error). Recently, DigitalPoint had a server problem and was offline for a day to everyone’s surprise. As this is a temporary problem, Google restored the ads after a while. Looks like Google was crawling over DigitalPoint every hour… hoping it will come back to life. ...

Project page launched - 2 new plugins for everyone!
2007-12-04 10:23:00
Tevine now has a new repository called “Project s“. There are some projects within there already. Here are some notable ones that are useful to almost everyone. Just to cut to the point, I shall be announcing 2 Wordpress plugins in this post. Title Capitalization This plugin automates the process of capitalizing titles. I’m sure you know what capitalization is. Capitalization helps give a little ”formal” look to your post titles. Here are some formats [there are 6] supported: This format capitalizes only the first word. THIS ONE ON THE OTHER HAND IS ALL CAPS. This Format Captializes Every Single Word. Certainly this One might be a Little Different than the Ones Above. I didn’t want to put a whole dictionary inside the plugin, so the plugin will only deal to a certain level of grammar (sorry, I cannot make titles that look the same as that of CNN, because that would require a dictionary list of nouns, articles, adjectives, etc….). The...

Google makes it clear it disallows paid links
2007-12-03 16:06:00
One can say that the whole idea of link selling has almost vanished even since Google began conducting serious checks across the board. From day one, Google forbid webmasters from selling links. However at that time, not many really bothered about it. This is until when Google grew prominant enough to put a plug to link monetization. (more…) © 2007 Tevine.

Google, Yahoo,… what about Windows Live?
2007-12-03 15:49:00
Google and Yahoo has always remained in the big picture. However, there is one big giant standing in the shadows. Windows Live is probably much better compared to its older precursor, MSN search, and is possibly comparable to the 2 top giants. Though, Windows Live was not as well-known compared to Google and Yahoo. Rather than word-of-mouth, Microsoft decided to incorporate it into Internet Explorer 7 as the default search engine, which probably did not work as well as compared to Internet Explorer dominance in 2002. Rectifying paid links where they don’t exist
2007-12-02 05:07:00
Sometimes, in the process of building links, your links may end up in places where you may not really expect. These very places can result in a penalty. The problem is, Google expects webmasters to know that they have a problem with their websites, and they should do something about it, even if they don’t ...

How to: Make your site look as though it was penalized

This is your how-to guide to make a site look like it is penalized by Google. Getting “penalized” have its so-called benefits, because you get to assault on Google (then praise them once they assign the real PageRank) and won’t get much comment spam with links in them if they came from wary commentors.

Google unleashes group chat in GMail

Down the road: Will Google lose support?
2007-11-29 05:16:00
A few years ago, Google was hailed as one of the best search engines around. Today, it is still the best search engine around. However, support for it appeared to have declined, compared to years ago. Google is no longer king of search relevancy - Yahoo is now just as good. Traffic-wise, Google still receives roughly ...
