Google OpenSocial
2007-11-03 12:16:00
Great! Yet another API added to Google ’s arsenal. Google OpenSocial  allows you to integrate social features on your site. Of course, as with any Google API, using it is not that simple. Be prepared to read the lengthy documentation. Nonetheless, it is an opportunity to get your site to interact with sites like Orkut, and Friendster (and many more). This API allows you to access some nice information, like profile information, friends’ information, as well as their activities on those social sites. The difference between Facebook? This Google API requires only HTML and JavaScript (or if you are creative enough, Flash), so most sites can use it without changing much stuff.
Firefox 2.0.0.9
2007-11-02 16:44:00
In just 2 weeks after 2.0.0.8, Mozilla decided to dish out 2.0.0.9. As with any update, it adds new features. In this case, the changes come in the form of bug fixes. There are no visible feature releases in this version, but nonetheless an importan update. Hmm, anyone still thinking of the Firefox memory leak? 2.0.0.9 doesn’t seem to patch it yet.

Say goodbye to PageRank… forever…
2007-11-02 03:55:00
In a bid to prevent people from selling links because of high PageRank, Google decides to abolish the PageRank ranking system altogether. Here are some new measures planned by Google: 1) PageRank reset All sites will have their PageRank resetted to 0. After that, PageRank will be replaced with a blue bar called VisitorRank (VR). VisitorRank is similar to PageRank, except it does not rely on links alone. VR is incredibly difficult (if at all) to cheat provided if there are some additional measures. VR can measure traffic activity (another worry for privacy? Ask Alexa), ensuring you have an accurate vote. Visitors get to vote for the site, similar to StumbleUpon. 2) No backlink information Google has plans to abolish the “link:” feature in its search engine. This may prevent people from showing that their links have plenty of backlinks (but then again, Yahoo does have the Site Explorer feature). 3) “Do-follow” Google implemented the “no-follow” f...

GMail 2
2007-11-01 05:27:00
I stumbled upon this post in Digg. I found out that Google actually upgraded my account automatically (how kind! :) ). Though, Google should have explicitly said that I’m using the new version (like what Microsoft did to Windows Live hotmail, whereby the revamp is fantastic). Here are some nice little features in this new GMail: -Contacts [just below “trash” tab on the left]: Allows you to… manage contacts -”Filter messages like these” [available by selecting the message and clicking on “More actions…”]: Similar to filter, Google helps you filter out those selected images. -”Older version” [option at the top right]: Use it if you want to use the earlier version -Change in location of “Loading…” message: The pre-loading message is displayed as normal text on the top left, while the actual loading message is displayed in the center. Other messages which are in orange appear to be in a lighter color ...

Google covers up on Youtube
2007-11-01 04:57:00
In the midst of updating PageRank, Google was dishing out so many penalties that it accidentally inflicted one on its own Youtube , bringing it down from PageRank 8 to PageRank 3. However, just recently, Google ammended that “flaw”, pushing YouTube’s PageRank back to 8. Many other sites do not have their PageRank restored. Yet another spoofed PageRank? We have yet to see.

Where Linux fails
2007-11-01 04:53:00
Linux is touted as a possible replacement for Windows. However, with every great thing comes great flaws. Finding software for Linux can be as difficult as finding a needle in the haystack. Most software on the market are “built for Windows”, probably hampering the adoption of Linux. While Linux recognises Windows executables, Linux cannot run them without an emulator. However, there are some software that can run on Linux without any emulators, like OpenOffice and Adobe software. Free is certainly great. While this is the main feature of Linux, free does come at a cost. While implementing Linux features, user friendliness was compromised. Tell a person who have no knowledge of computers to use Linux, and you may get unexpected results. Linux is built for those who read manuals, unlike Windows which is built for those who want to get on with it in a hurry. Sure, there is Ubuntu, but Ubuntu isn’t as user-friendly as Windows XP (and can’t be compared to Windo...

Leopard Hacked to Run on PCs
2007-10-30 18:29:00
The OSx86 Scene forum is offering full instructions on how to install the newest Mac OS on Windows PCs. The cat and mouse game between hackers and Apple takes another move, with news that Apple’s new Leopard operating system has already been successfully installed on Windows PCs. The OSx86 Scene forum has released details of how Windows users can migrate to Apple’s new OS, without investing in new hardware — even though installing Leopard on an PC may be counter to Apple’s terms and conditions. The forum is offering full instructions on how to install the system, including screenshots of the installation process. Not all the features of Leopard function with the patch — Wi-Fi, support, for example, is reportedly inoperable. Historically, Apple’s likely next move will be to track down and act against those behind the hack. The move to make Leopard work on a PC is just the latest in Apple’s continual struggle with the hacker community. Also th...

Having fun with MSN: Talk to a person using multiple windows at once
2007-10-30 16:26:00
Well, Microsoft certainly left some micro loop-holes in its relatively popular Windows Live Messenger. Exclusive to MSN 7 and above, this “glitch” allows you to chat to one user using multiple windows. Simply for fun, and has little practical use. Bill Gates no longer World’s richest person
2007-10-30 15:35:00
For several years, William (Bill ) Gates [a.k.a. Bill Gates ] stood at the top, unwavered by competition below him. Now, all that has changed. With Bill Gates battling out with his long-term rivals, Carlos and Warren, the top is not Bill Gates, but rather a person whom few knew about him. No, not from America, he is from India. Mukesh Ambani, now the world’s richest person at $63.2 billion, is one who shall represent India’s growing importance as a hub. Being the first from India to hit the list (and of course, being at the very top) earned him reputation and pride for his country. Strong stock growth aided his rise to the top, allowing him to jump more than 10 places ahead (he was at 14 on March 2007). Though, Forbes isn’t really saying much about it, and its current lists (at March 2007) showed Bill Gates still being at the top. Data via StockMarketsView 1) Mukesh Ambani ($63.2 bil) 2) Carlos Slim Helu ($62.3 bil) 3) William (Bill) Gates ($62.3 bil) 4) Warren Bu...

Enhanced security by simple change in template?
2007-10-30 10:49:00
Tevine had over 40 newly registered users since its opening. Of course, we welcome these new registered users. Of course, there is a chance that majority of them are probably “bots” (some with pretty obvious fake names and email), and surely bots are there to… spam. Though, Tevine has not seen any increase (or any) spam comments despite the large amount of seemingly automated registrations. This could be that the comments form had been modified, pretty much making it slightly different from other WordPress site installs. We would however, be enhancing security by implementing a capcha system for new user signups. Nonetheless, we would like to welcome genuine sign-ups to Tevine.

Apple places new limits on iPhone sales
2007-10-29 18:56:00
Apple last week stopped accepting cash for iPhone purchases and reinstated a two-per-person sales limit in an effort to curb the black market for unlocked versions of the touch-screen handset. The new policy began Thursday, Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris told the Associated Press. Before then, there was no cash restriction and the purchase limit was five per person. “Customer response to the iPhone has been off the charts, and limiting iPhone sales to two per customer helps us ensure that there are enough iPhones for people who are shopping for themselves or buying a gift,” Kerris said. “We’re requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers.” Since introducing iPhone on June 29th, Apple has sold over 1.4 million of the handsets, the company announced as part of its fiscal fourth quarter earnings last week. However, it estimated that approximately 250,000 of those iPhones were sold to buyers who intended to unlock th...

GMail may hit 5GB in 2 months time
2007-10-29 14:08:00
Google mail (known as GMail), one that is well known for its ever-increasing space, may hit 5GB in just 2 months time or earlier according to estimates. This came as a surprise from 2.8GB from last year. By October, Google had jumped the count to 3.8GB in early October, and further to 4.5GB in late October, something that may have otherwise gone unnoticed if not mentioned. At the rate GMail is growing, the amount of space it provides is likely to hit or surpass Hotmail at 5GB in just 2 months (at a rate of 0.3KB per second).

Microsoft working to get Windows on XO laptops
2007-10-29 04:27:00
Microsoft has made progress in getting its Windows software to work on a low-cost laptop computer for poor children that currently runs on rival Linux software, an executive said on Thursday. The world’s largest software company is now working to adapt a basic version of Windows XP so it is compatible with the nonprofit One Laptop Per Child Foundation’s small green- and-white XO laptop. “We’re spending a non-trivial amount of money on it,” Microsoft Corporate Vice President Will Poole said in an interview on Thursday. “We remain hopeful with our progress to date, we still have significant work ahead to finalize our analysis and testing processes,” he said. “At the end of the day, there’s no guarantees.” The One Laptop per Child Foundation, a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, plans to start producing the $188 machines in China next month and eventually manufacture millions a year for elementary school ...

Nintendo to sell Wii in China
2007-10-29 00:48:00
Nintendo said it aims to launch its Wii game console in China and South Korea next year, helping accelerate its breakneck growth, and cement its recent lead over Sony and Microsoft. One day after the three game makers’ earnings announcements, Japan-based analysts said Nintendo looks well-positioned to win the race for top spot in the current-generation video game console market due to a strong software lineup and low hardware prices. “New game hardware comes around once in every five, six years. So making a good start is crucial,” Daiwa Institute of Research analyst Koki Shiraishi said. “Since the Xbox 360 was launched one year ahead, it is roughly on par with the Wii in total sales. But if you take a look at current momentum in net growth, the Wii is well ahead.” In the July-to-September quarter, Nintendo sold 3.9 million units of the Wii, which features a motion-sensing controller that enables users to direct onscreen play by swinging it like a ra...

Google pagerank real update?
2007-10-28 14:04:00
In what can be said to be an unbelievable spat of events, the Google PR we have been looking at from the toolbar may not be accurate after all. There are reports that Google directory is showing a different set of PageRank, a seemingly more accurate one, compared to the toolbar PageRank. Looks like Google is trying to check out the community’s reaction. In addition, Google datacenters seems to have mixed PageRank values for some sites (even up to 3 values). (more…)

A free link from Technorati’s top 100?

This is definately a must-have opportunity to get a link for your site. (more…)

Apple’s Leopard arrives in San Francisco
2007-10-27 19:20:00
As Yogi might say, it was deja vu all over again on Stockton Street as Apple released Mac OS X Leopard to the general public. (Credit: Tom Krazit/CNET News.com)It wasn’t exactly iPhone Day, but hundreds of people lined up on Stockton Street on Friday outside the San Franc isco Apple store to get their hands on Mac OS X Leopard, the newest version of Apple’s operating system. About 30 minutes before the doors of the store opened at 6 p.m., the line stretched up Stockton and around the corner onto O’Farrell Street, maybe two-thirds as long as the iPhone line at its longest on June 29. Still, prospective customers waited hours in line to buy Leopard, even though they could have preordered a copy from Apple or Amazon.com and have spent that time installing their new OS. Tyler Howarth (middle) is psyched to be first in line in downtown San Francisco for Leopard. (Credit: Tom Krazit/CNET News.com) “That’s kind of lame,” said Tyler Howarth, first in line...
Top 10 tips to improve Alexa Rank
2007-10-27 05:22:00
This article looks quite well done, thus I decided to share it.  It is important to get accepted by many advertising companies like CpxInteractive, etc and to get advertisers/sponsors. If you have improved Alexa Rank ing you will get accepted fast, if you have bad alexa ranking you can be rejected or it may take many days for you to be accepted. But alexa rank is not really worth it because it only counts the traffic that uses Alexa Toolbar. If you don’t use Alexa Toolbar and visit someone’s site or your site then you will not be counted as a visitor to that site by Alexa. So Alexa ranking is not really that worth it. (more…)

PHP + IIS7 = Memory leak
2007-10-27 04:50:00
Looks like Microsoft should have sticked to the good old IIS6. PHP and IIS7 (in Windows Vista) do not make good parthners. When together, expect an error message in 1.5 hours time (IIS process worker crash). Of course, other than that error message that seem to pop up every now and then, your computer will start losing a lot of usable memory (RAM) each time you see that message. (more…)

Apple’s Leopard Fanfare Anticlimactic To P2P Users
2007-10-27 00:50:00
The highest download traffic of Mac OS X 10.5 occurred after Apple distributed the release candidate in September. Apple officially launches its new Leopard operating system Friday. But the first major release of the Mac OS in nearly two and a half years has been the hottest download for months on peer-to-peer networks, rivaling at times even the most popular movies and songs, a P2P tracking firm said. Apple has already started selling Leopard in Japan, where hundreds of fans lined up at stores to buy the OS. In the United States, Apple stores will close at 4 p.m. local time, and reopen at 6 p.m., giving away T-shirts to the first 500 buyers. The store closure is to give employees time to turn the outlets into party central, and to prepare for the higher traffic. But all the fanfare is anticlimactic for P2P users who have been downloading Leopard in various forms of beta for about a year, Eric Garland, analyst and chief executive of Big Champagne, said. The highest traffic occurred...

The oddities: The firestorm in california
2007-10-26 14:47:00
Who know’s when will this ever end. Well, this fire may have broken record books, but it certainly exhibits some unusual characteristics that definately cast it apart from other past firestorms: 1) It destroyed 1/10 as much forest area as how much USA clears land in a year. 2) But generated more smoke compared to several coal factories. 3) It’s trail of destruction is almost unpredictable. This fire literally does hit-and-run, leaving some buildings completely untouched, while burning the rest. 4) The fire nicely stops slightly past the Mexico border. Looks like it respects international borders. 5) It required the evacuation of 4 times as much people compared to hurricane Katrina. 6) Evacuation centers are also being evacuated as well. 7) NASA is busy taking photos of the incident upon request, making it one of the most documented firestorms seen from space. 8) Some fires were caused deliberately, some fires were started on accident, combined they do disasterous damag...
