A digital camera or sunglasses
2008-05-06 23:21:00 How often have you found yourself saying, “If your eyes had only seen what I’ve seen”? Slip on a pair of $100 sunglasses from ThinkGeek.com, and you’ll never have to utter those words again. A 1.3-megapixel digital camera embedded in the frame can snap a picture of 1,280 by 1,024 pixels when you push the shutter button above the right temple. If lifting your hand to your glasses is too revealing, there’s also a quarter-size remote that activates the shutter from your pocket. The lens is small by necessity, leading to a tiny bit of blurring on the edges of the image, but the sensor can still take well-exposed pictures inside during the day.If someone asks why the black plastic frame is a bit thick, just explain that there is an MP3 player built in. Two earbuds dangle from the ear rests, and you switch tracks with the same buttons that control the camera’s shutter.A flash drive also encased in the frame can hold 1 gigabyte of music and photos, which can be downloade... Headset or Fashion Accessory
2008-04-16 19:38:00 Plantronics has been a leader in adding style to Bluetooth headsets. The latest in its Discovery line, the 925, aims to add even more style as well as substance, in the form of audio quality. In fact, company officials would prefer that it not be referred to as a headset. They call it an earpiece, because they want consumers to think of it as a fashion accessory. It comes in black, cherry or gold, with cases to match. These are the spring colors; the company says it will change the colors every season. The Discovery 925 is available now for $150, at plantronics.com, Sprint stores and other retailers. The controls have also been simplified so that one button does most of the work, like turning the unit on and off. The same button answers and hangs up the phone. The volume control is the only other button.Another form/function enhancement is the carrying case, which doubles as a charger. Without removing the unit from its case, you can connect it to a computer via U.S.B. or charge it... More About: Fashion , Headset , Accessory
Sony XEL-1 - TV that is thinner than the cord that powers it
2008-04-09 12:03:00 The Sony XEL-1 is a big idea in a small, expensive package. The first television available in the United States to use organic light-emitting diodes, it provides strong contrast, pure blacks and good detail in a screen that is thinner than the cord that powers it. The O.L.E.D. screen is a promising TV technology. It uses no backlight, so it requires little power to run; Sony estimates it is 40 percent more efficient for each panel-inch than a conventional L.E.D. screen.Because O.L.E.D.’s have a speedy response time, sports and fast-moving images have few of the problems known as artifacts, making for better picture quality. O.L.E.D.’s are inexpensive to make, at least in theory. The XEL-1, which measures 11 inches diagonally in the 16:9 widescreen format, is priced at $2,500, and will be available in limited quantities through Sony Style stores and some retailers. Sony unveiled a 27-inch version at a trade show in January. As production ramps up, expect O.L.E.D.’s to becom... More About: Powers , Cord
Asus Ultralight Laptop, the U2E
2008-04-04 19:33:00 Apple may be aiming at metalheads with its thin MacBook Air, but Asus is chasing the leather crowd. Asus’s ultralight laptop, the U2E, has black pebbled leather on the top and the palm rest. The refined look is meant to evoke the days when travelers wouldn’t leave home without their leather valises and trunks. The U2E is lighter than the Air, about 2.7 pounds versus 3, in part because of its smaller screen, about 11 inches versus 13, and a tighter keyboard. The sides aren’t tapered to an edge like those on the Air, because the U2E comes with all of the standard connectors and a DVD-R drive. The square edges make it seem much thicker than the Air, although it is only a quarter-inch fatter. The U2E costs $1,999 now, but in a few weeks a version with a 32-gigabyte flash drive will go on sale. At $2,699, that will be more expensive, but also 0.66 pound lighter because it sheds the heavy metal of the hard disk drive. More About: Laptop
Nuclear Shielding
2008-03-25 17:22:00 As one can appreciate, the manufacturing requirements for the nuclear industry are extremely rigorous. In North America, regulatory authorities such as the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission ensure that the public and nuclear industry workers are kept safe. Simply stated, there is no margin for error in the manufacturing process for components used in the nuclear power generation process.Lead is an excellent radiation shielding material for the nuclear industry. The reasons that lead is such a good material when working in radioactive environments are its density, high atomic number, its stability, ease of fabrication, high degree of flexibility in application, and its availability. The only metal that is more dense than lead is gold which is impractical for use in most industrial settings simply because of its high cost. In the nuclear industry, lead is used extensively in the manufacture of nuclear casks, nuclear storage containers (called ...
Sansa Fuze Player by SanDisk
2008-03-22 13:00:00 It’s not easy being No. 2 when No. 1 is Apple’s line of iPod music and video players. SanDisk, which holds that slot, is aiming its new Sansa Fuze player squarely at the iPod Nano. The Fuze is competing mainly on price. Like the Nano, the Fuze’s batteries are not replaceable, and the Fuze comes in five colors, compared with Nano’s six, though the Fuze has a deep blue choice that iPod lacks. The 4-gigabyte Fuze at $100 is $50 less than the Nano of the same capacity. The 8-gigabyte Fuze sells for $130, compared with $200 for the comparable Nano. (A 2-gigabyte Fuze is $80.) While the iTunes service does not work with the Fuze, the device will download music from other sites like Rhapsody, Napster, Urge and Yahoo Music. SanDisk says the Fuze will play up to 24 hours on a single charge, but its main advantage over the Nano may be its slot for a microSD flash memory card that can add as much as 8 gigabytes of storage. That provides an advantage to SanDisk, too. It is the ... More About: Player , Sandisk

LG60 - Tv just got slimmer than we think
2008-02-27 17:53:00 L.C.D. televisions are all alike, right? A bright screen, some input ports and a power button are all you need. In an effort to mix things up, LG decided to make their latest sets superslim and designer-friendly. The LG60, which has not yet been assigned a suggested price, is expected to reach stores in April. It will come in five sizes — 37 to 52 inches — and is a mere 1.7 inches thick. It comes in glossy black with a dark red back, and has a purely decorative L.E.D.-lighted hole in the front and imperceptible speakers concealed in the frame. The TV has four high-definition multimedia inputs along with a U.S.B. connection for playing back still images and MP3s. It can handle full 1080p HD video and also supports LG’s SimpLink system for connecting devices. As televisions of all sizes become mere commodities, companies like LG are depending on the little differences to make their slim displays stand out. A little red here, a few extra HDMI ports, and perhaps you can turn some...
Fully customizable phone - Zzzphone,China
2008-02-22 22:20:00 The Zzzphone, a made-to-order cellphone, recently captured the imagination of the gadget crowd. But it remains to be seen whether it can live up to its promise. This cellphone, which starts at $149, is fully customizable, allowing you to add or remove features and accessories and even change the logo on the back to almost anything you desire. Want to get rid of the camera? Pay $11 less. Want to improve the processor? Add $95. Want Skype Internet calling or G.P.S.? Add $36 and $119 respectively. The touch-screen phone is unlocked, so if you add your SIM card, it should work on the T-Mobile and AT&T networks in the United States and on G.S.M. networks elsewhere. The battery lasts for about four hours on one charge. The company takes orders at www.zzzphone.com, then manufactures the handsets at a factory in China . The Zzzphone mix-and-match idea has generated a lot of excitement online, but so far the actual phones have been slow to arrive on American shores. The truly risk-av... More About: Phone
A Light Show in a Bulb
2008-02-15 17:46:00 Adding mood lighting to a space-age bachelor pad is easy with this five-watt L.E.D. bulb from ThinkGeek that comes with its own remote control. The four-inch-long bulb will work in a standard socket, but it uses much less power than old incandescent bulbs, because the L.E.D.’s in the lamp are much more efficient at turning electricity into visible light. This tight coupling between an embedded chip and a light source is widely considered to be the future of illumination, promising much lower electrical bills. Unfortunately this model costs $50, but prices are expected to come down as the technology becomes more widespread. While adding a remote control for a light bulb may seem silly in a world of switches, the bulb has more options than just on and off. When it’s time to adjust the mood in a room, the remote can set the bulb’s intensity, its transition pattern (steady, fading, flashing or strobing) and its color, which can be any of 15 major colors of the spectrum, from r... 2008-01-24 17:26:00 No one knows you as well as your Yamaha Bodibeat. This MP3 player scans your music collection and plays tunes in sync with your heartbeat. The player works in four modes: workout, fitness, training and a standard music-playing mode. The workout mode automatically matches your music with your heartbeat — slow down and you might get some smooth jazz; speed up and you get grunge — while the other two modes play music at a brisk tempo, encouraging you to work harder. It comes with a set of electronic beats or can pull music from your own collection, assuming there are ample upbeat beats available. The Bodibeat software lets you record runs and plan workouts based on intensity and speed. It includes a pulse and pace sensor for measuring heart rate and distance completed. More About: Player , Sync , N Sync
MiShare - A must for IPod users
2008-01-19 17:32:00 If a friend’s digital music collection leaves you with playlist envy, instant gratification is one step closer. MiShare lets music connoisseurs swap files between iPods on the fly. The device serves as a bridge between two iPods (though not the Shuffle or Touch models) and allows sharing of songs, videos and photos. It can transmit a 3-megabyte song in about 6 seconds, or a 60-megabyte album in under 2 minutes. Pushing a button copies the most recently played song; holding it down copies the whole playlist. But miShare doesn’t eliminate the need to connect to a computer altogether. When you sync your iPod with iTunes, you are prompted to unlock any songs and videos that are protected by Apple’s anticopying system by entering the original purchaser’s user name and password. Unprotected songs are available for immediate playback (but sharing responsibly is always a good idea). The device, which will be available this month for $100 from mishare.com, is simple in form, bu... Canon ZR950
2008-01-15 18:57:00 Canon’s latest entry-level video camera, the ZR950, does not skimp on specs. But it also does not carry a lot of doodads or protrusions like a TV-station rig. Instead it is smooth-edged for popping out of a pocket to capture the moment when Junior suddenly comes in goal range — even from the high school version of nosebleed seats. This MiniDV tape camcorder, introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, will sell for $280 when it ships later this month. Its 37X optical zoom range, described in terms of a still camera, is 47 to 1,743 millimeters, but with a new type of electronic cropping of the sensor output, it becomes a fairly wide 42 to a super-telephoto 2,002 millimeters. That means it fills the frame with a child athlete’s body from down the field. An “easy mode” sets all controls for those who do not want to fiddle, and the 2.7-inch L.C.D. screen flips around and glows bright white to become a portrait light. For your deck of sports-legend cards,... More About: Canon , Anon

Stiletto 2 -Tune From a Satellite, the Internet or a Hard Drive
2008-01-04 17:19:00 There are essentially four ways to put music onto a portable player: rip it from a CD or other storage media, download it from the Internet , get it streamed from the Internet or receive it by satellite. The new Stiletto 2 from Sirius Satellite Radio does all four, using one device. It’s a satellite receiver, a Wi-Fi receiver for both streaming and recording from the Internet, and an MP3 player that can accept music files copied from a hard drive.Sirius has expanded from its satellite service and now streams most of its 130 channels with its Internet radio service. The Stiletto 2, which sells for $330 with a monthly subscription of $13 a month, provides the satellite channels as well as Internet radio when in range of a Wi-Fi hot spot, or plays downloaded files. The files can include those from music services like Rhapsody or Yahoo Music.Time-shifting in TV is old hat, but the ability to record live radio for later playback is a serious feature for radio fans. Google’s Advertising Black Box Becomes Just a Bit Translucent
2007-12-15 17:43:00 Google these days is constantly tweaking all aspects of its many services. One of these changes jumped out at me as a sign of a shift in strategy. It is testing a system that will let Website owners who sell advertising through Google’s AdSense system to review and reject advertisements they don’t find appropriate. For years, Google’s advertising system has been entirely opaque. Advertisers entered bids; publishers made a space on their sites. Google picked which ads would go where, sending a bill to the advertiser and a check to the publisher, with little explanation for how the amounts were chosen. Google has slowly been adding options and information, especially for advertisers. And this move gives publishers some more control. In particular, it can let publishers manually overrule AdSense, which is meant to select ads that are related to the topic of pages. Sometimes, however, this system can create very odd, and occasionally unseemly, juxtapositions. The new feature l... More About: Advertising , Black , Black Box
Nokia N82 - More of a camera than a phone
2007-12-03 14:02:00 It didn’t take long for camera phones to grow up. Only a few years ago, the best ones took pictures with 1 megapixel of resolution. Now Nokia is coming out with the N82, a phone that takes 5-megapixel photos, higher quality than some point-and-shoot cameras. The diminutive N82, weighing about four ounces, is a successor to the N80 and includes a flash and Carl Zeiss optics. It has 2 gigabytes of storage space for photos and can display pictures and video on a television using an optional TV-out dock. It will be available early next year for about $630 at nseries.com.Photos can be sent to the expandable internal memory or straight to almost any photo-sharing site over cellular or Wi-Fi networks. It also plays back MP3 music files and most video files and even has a built-in FM tuner. Not enough? The N82 also has a position sensor — it will flip the screen when you want to show pictures in landscape mode — and supports e-mail and even voice-over-Internet calls. Try to get you... Headphones cum Mp3 player - Tügo
2007-11-23 18:06:00 MP3 players have mostly left the heavy lifting of actually producing sound to speakers or headphones. Koss decided to mash the two together with its MP3 Tügo (as in “to go”), a pair of audiophile-style headphones with a built-in player. The headphones, look like a traditional hi-fi headset with soft earcups and a thick padded headband. Inside, along with Koss speakers, are 512 megabytes of storage — enough for about 128 songs — and MP3-playback circuitry, allowing unobtrusive listening to music without connecting an external player. The Tügo is compatible with PCs and Macs and allows dragging and dropping MP3 files to the headphones over a mini-U.S.B. cable, which also charges the set. It can last about 10 hours on one charge, and the headphones fold up for portability.Koss says its internal speaker coils and ear cushions offer noise-free sound for audiophiles, while the black cans hark back to an earlier, more innocent time, before white earbuds. For little one's - Camera or something more
2007-11-16 18:52:00 Made for the youngest of shutterbugs, the Kidizoom Camera from VTech has a real viewing screen and binocular-vision viewfinders, much like last year’s Fisher-Price Kid-Tough camera. But the Kidizoom does more than take pictures. It can capture videos and has an on-screen editor so a child can quickly add a pair of devil horns to a photo of her big sister and display the results on either a TV or a computer screen using the included cables. A joystick can be used to play tic-tac-toe, a Concentration-type memory game or a sliding square puzzle using photos stored in the camera’s memory. A slot for an SD card lets you expand the memory beyond the included 16 megabytes. It also provides a way to back up photos, which are erased from the internal memory if the four AA batteries need to be changed.Information about this peanut-butter-proof camera can be found at vtechkids.com. For $60, it could be worth the price if only to lure a curious preschooler away from your Nikon. More About: Some

A Wi-Fi Gadget for Music and Photos - Chumby
2007-11-07 17:26:00 With today’s ever-faster processors of increasing complexity, it’s good to know that some gadget designers still remember how to have fun. Chumby is a powerful little device with Wi-Fi, a 3.5-inch screen and an interface that you can customize. If you are wondering where the fun lies, it is also covered in leather and has something called a squeeze sensor. Like the iPod Touch, Chumby plays music and has a crisp touch screen, but unlike an iPod its underlying technology is built on open-source software that is ripe for tinkering. Chumby owners are encouraged to create and share programs, or “widgets,” that run on the device. To date, there are about 50 small widgets that do things like display weather information, show the latest YouTube videos and fetch images from the photo sharing site Flickr.Chumby, which will go on sale this month for less than $200 at www.chumby.com, is part clock radio, part Internet news reader and part music player. The Vectrix
2007-10-28 17:04:00 THREE WHEELS may not seem as sexy as two—unless you’re carving hairpin turns at 60 mph on a slick road, without fear of unsexy road rash. Oh, and without burning a drop of gas. The highway-legal Vectrix scooter’s speed-sensitive steering and suspension keep both front wheels on the ground even when the rider leans deep into a turn, thanks to ball joints in the fork that let the wheels travel up and down more freely the faster the bike is going. Each wheel connects to the steering column through its own axle, but a series of rods syncs their movement so both lean at the same angle in a turn. When the trike slows, the suspension system locks the bike in an upright position so it’s perfectly stable at a stop sign. And, because the front wheel of a motorcycle is more likely to slip in a turn, adding another improves traction. The design also allows for more cargo or acanopy. Jim Plagenhoef, Vectrix’s director of North American sales, envisions waves of meter-readers and mail car... More About: Trix

HDTV Means Consumers Get More Choice With Viewing
2007-10-07 21:08:00 Sony’s incredible BRAVIA range has been available for about a year now, and with it carries advancement in high definition technology. With first generation HDTVs displaying their high definition content in 1080i resolution, the Sony BRAVIA range looked to turn the arena on its head by introducing 1080p resolution – but has it? With the honeymoon period for the BRAVIA range now over, and with people now beginning to invest in high definition equipment, they also have to decide on whether they want 1080i resolution or 1080p.First of all, consumers have to try to understand the differences between 1080i and 1080p, and to do that, they need to understand what each is. Both high definition resolutions produce the same sized image, 1920 pixels by 1080 lines. The main difference is the way that they render the final image on screen. With 1080i, the image is interlaced, with odd numbered lines appearing a split second before the even numbered lines. This “painting” effect happens i...
