Google Wordmasters Challenge - Where are the Results?
2006-11-02 00:24:01 It is November 1st and there is still no news about the Google Word masters Challenge Results . The contest simultaneously conducted at 10 cities in India on September 30th, 2006, by Google India, saw over 3,000 participants fighting it out to be one of the top ten creative talents that google were hunting for. It?s been more than a month since the contest and there has been no sign of the results. The official form that everyone received during the event says the results would be out by 30th of October, which as we all know has passed two days back. I have got quite a few mails from contestants who have been checking their e-mail boxes every hour from 30th of October. This has been a huge let down by the Google guys. So the guys at Google India I want you to listen to me and listen me good: I am not saying you guys suck, I am not saying you guys have to always be promt. All I am saying is: 1) when you can afford to email every participant and even SMS them a day before the event, you... More About: Here
Gmail hacks: Multiple signatures/Attatchment icons/File spac
2006-11-02 00:24:01 Using this Greasemonkey script you can switch your Gmail signature based on the From address you select. It simply Combines choosing ?From: address? and signature into 1 action. Gmail with different attachment icons is another Greasemonkey script which lets you add attachment icons to your Gmail account (Well at least most of them). Install Greasemonkey in your firefox extension before trying out the above two scripts. I am not sure how useful these two hacks are and how imaginative people can be. But hey, just another thing to have fun with for the techies. Gmail File Space (gspace), a FireFox extension allows you to use your Gmail Space (2.5 GB and growing) for file storage. It acts as a remote machine. You can transfer files between your hard drive and gmail. This is similar to “Gmail Drive” on windows platform. Your gmail account looks like a FTP host and you can upl... More About: Icon , Mail , Hacks , Nature

Google Talk has offline messages
2006-11-02 00:24:01 One of the major features why I stuck to Yahoo IM Messenger all these days was the offline messages that they offered. And now GTalk has got them too. This feature was introduced today morning. Don’t worry you don’t have to download any extra plugin or a new gTalk. Just login to your gTalk and use it the normal way (Save this time you can even open up an identity who is offline and send him a quick message :)) gTalk however has a long way to go if it has to compete with Yahoo IM Messenger or AOL. BenQ Black Box - Defining the future
2006-10-31 12:18:01 BenQ - Siemens have come up with a sleak handset which would define the future of mobile technology. The handset is basically a huge screen - thats all. One huge screen which transforms to your needs. In simple words a touch screen which would sport the look of the function you would require to do. The above pics show some of the available functions. 1) A calculator 2) FM radio (I like the iPod kinda tuner and volume control) 3) The normal cellphone 4) A game where you find a dolphin escaping a bath tub hole… or something to that effect. This design won the best design award in a Japanese Design contest. Its a pity that BenQ is bankrupt and they cant take this further. I hope Apple takes a cue and goes ahead with such designs. Firefox 2.0 is out!
2006-10-30 12:15:01 After months of waiting, it’s finally here! Fire fox 2.0 - get it now As for changes, at first glance it’s got a whole new glossier (web 2.0-ish?) look. The main change that I noticed over the previous version is that many features like the tab manager and session restore which were available as extensions earlier are now defaault items. There is a new phishing filter and the new version claims to provide better security and safer browsing. Another thing I noticed (and was thankful for) was that everything is now more polished, with text not going beyond the box width and buttons not overlapping on one another in options screens. An excellent addon is the spell checker, that checks spelling rel time as you type into any text box - real neat! Google and Yahoo searches in the search box come with a Suggest option and there is now a search engine manager. Unlike other reports that I’ve seen elsewhere, I don’t think there’s any big change in the startup tim... More About: Firefox 2

Some of the points there drive the nail thro’ the head. It is amazing that students can be good entrepreneurs basically cauze they have nothing to lose. You suck at it, you just give it up and go on to do an MS or MBA or take a day job at some software company. 4. Only you get screwed When you are a fresh graduate and your venture or ventures fail, its you who gets screwed and no one else. But if you fail in the same fashion 10 years later your spouse, your children?s trust funds and all your dependents will feel the impact. USB batteries
2006-10-30 12:15:01 This is a pretty cool idea. Simply because rechargeable batteries are very common today and laptops are more common than battery recharger. This USB battery has a flip top which lets you flip the anode to expose an inbuilt usb port which you can plug into any USB port and get the battery recharged. This saves time and also is good since you wouldn’t have to lug the battery charger any more. Maybe this isn’t as great as it sounds, but it definitely is a great idea. Man! These people know how to combine technologies for the better These batteries are available in various sizes (AA, AAA etc.) and voltage ratings (1.5V, 9V etc.). Other personal and professional commitments must take precedence. Other DesiPundit contributors have understood and supported my decision to do so. I?ll post the tip-offs that we have received before this post and keep the site up until this month end. Now this is sad as well as interesting. A few of the commenters at that perticular post argued saying shutting it all down isn’t a good idea cauze it takes more to build than to destroy. Point taken, but I wouldn’t want to trust a booming blog like DesiPundit in the hands of few enthusiasts who don’t have a clue about the vision you had while you came up with the blog. Yahoo Time Capsule
2006-10-23 13:00:03 Yahoo time capsule is a nice concept to preserve our time and place… in the virtual world of course. Most of us would have seen period films. A film say Amadeus revolving around the 18th century and a film revolving in the 15th century both have casts wearing similar costumes, speaking similar language and using similar tools. Why? Because we don’t have enough knowledge/details about their time. We generalize everything before the 19th centure with same kinda language/dress/tools/art/culture. 100 years down the line, the future generations will generalize us, for the lack of details about our culture and tradition and our TIME. Yahoo Time Capsule lets you record anything and everything that descirbes the year 2006: word, video, voice, message, photo etc. Within the next 21 days anyone with a valid yahoo id can upload their content into the time capsule. Like everything Yahoo! does, it?s about you ? our amazing users. We think there?s no one better suited to teach futur... More About: Time Capsule

Little Autonomous Robot using PIC Micro controller
2006-10-23 13:00:03 Here is a neat tutorial on how to build a small autonomous robot using PIC 18F4620. There are a lot of pictures and circuit schematics to help you get it done easily. The robot description isn’t uploaded completely yet. Work is still in progress, but then the important parts and circuits are put up. This I guess should be more than enough for any robotics enthusiast. This page described my new robotic project. One year ago, I built a very simple little robot with a Comfile PICBASIC 3B microcontroler and a Cybot chassis. This new project is based on a very much more powerfull Microchip PIC 18F4620 (or PIC18F4520) Microcontroler programmed in C language with the same chassis and new sensors.. Google merges Writely and Spreadsheet
2006-10-23 13:00:03 Google released their new service Docs and Spreads heet. In simple words - writely + spreadsheet = docs and spreadsheet. But that is not all. A few good mods have been done, which makes life a lot more easier. Firstly, both the docs and spreadsheets are at the same place thought there is no virtual interaction between them. But I guess this helps people to make effective use of both. Secondly, you have a common file list and more importantly the chat feature which writely didn’t have is now available in docs (Spreadsheet always had it). Also docs now looks more like your gmail’s “compose new mail”. Write ly is now redirecting to docs.google.com. Google Docs and Spreadsheet requires you to run IE6 or Firefox. It is not supported by Opera or Safari Two things which I liked about the new service are: 1) One click import of all your writely files. 2) You can email documents to your google ID and they will automatically appear in your D&S account. You can sav... More About: Google , Read , Sheet

Google Webmasters Challenge Concludes
2006-10-23 13:00:03 The previously mentioned google webmasters challenge ended yesterday. Conducted across 9 cities (including Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Hydrabad) and seeing over 300 participants in every city, I would say it was a success. Like I already noted, the good thing about the event was that, it didn’t restrict creativity with an age limit bar. The Chennai edition saw 60 year olds to 17 year olds battling it out for the awards. I was quite dissapointed to not find any school going kid there. But hey, the school kids get enough opportunities, for creative writing is a part of every culturals in Chennai. At first I wasn’t sure about the competition. Not much publicity had been given, at least not in Chennai. Most of the publicizing was done thro’ blogs, this would have meant most participants would essentially be bloggers. But thank god, this was not the case. Only a handful of prominent bloggers turned up. Many in the auditorium had no clue about the competition. Only during ...
