Yahoo seeks to make its Web search more predictive
2007-10-02 17:35:00 Yahoo is making web search faster by introducing new ways of predicting what users are looking for, while seeking to keep pace with rivals by including video, audio and picture results as answers to text searches. The new features it announced on Monday were aimed at better understanding the intention of users conducting particular types of searches and to get them to the information they desire within a single search. Research conducted by Harris Interactive for Yahoo found that roughly 15 per cent of online adults find what want on their first search while most need three to four searches. As part of its makeover, the revamped Yahoo! search engine will suggest ways to phrase a search as a user types into the query box and will produce more links to photos, videos and music on the main results page. The new "Search Assist" tool will also pull information from Yahoo!?s calendar service, Upcoming.org, to highlight local events when they are relevant to a search request. >> More About: Yahoo , Make , Predict

Xobni : A New Look for our Inbox
2007-10-02 16:54:00 For more than a decade, the look and feel of e-mail inboxes has remained agonizingly static. Now, Xobni ["inbox" spelled backward] has released a test version of software that gives Outlook, a completely different feel. Xobni's goals is to pull out relevant but sometimes buried information from a person's inbox and other folders, and make it easy to find. When a Xobni user highlights an e-mail in her inbox, a panel pops up showing useful information about the sender. If a picture is available, it appears, as does a bar graph showing the times of day when the sender has e-mailed the user. This is useful for gauging when that person may be online and working in the future. Xobni keeps track of the number of e-mails the user and sender have exchanged and even ranks the sender in ter... Hijacking Gmail Session !
2007-08-09 15:31:00 At the Black Hat security convention, Robert Graham, the CEO of errata security, surprised attendees by hijacking a Gmail session on camera and reading the victim?s email. Taking over another person's Gmail account and then sending us sheep-loving emails. The attack is actually quite simple. First Graham needs to be able to sniff data packets and in our case the open Wi-Fi network at the convention fulfilled that requirement. He then ran Ferret to copy all the cookies flying through the air. Finally, Graham cloned those cookies into his browser in easy point-and-click fashion with a home-grown tool called Hamster. >> More About: Hijack , Jacking

Kittens Could Solve Spam !
2007-08-07 16:36:00 As spammers get better at defeating text-based Human Interactive Proofs [HIPs], the next step in anti-spam technology may rely on photos of kittens and other images that are easy for humans to identify, but difficult for machines. An executive at Microsoft has an unusual idea for beating spammers. Powerful software tools and supercomputers aren't involved, but kittens are or rather, photos of kittens. Kevin Larson, a researcher at Microsoft's advanced reading technologies group, has found that asking a user to identify the subject of a photo, like a kitten, could help block spam programs. One twist on the HIP idea that they've worked on is to display 16 or more photos and ask for identification of the photos. In an example, he suggested using pictures of cats and dogs. The problem with the concept, however, is that Microsoft would have to create a massive catalog of photos, otherwise the programmers could match the correct response with each photo in the catalog and begin to spoo... Securing Cell Phones !
2007-08-02 15:48:00 Last week, researchers from a security company found a flaw in iPhone software that allows it to be remotely controlled. The weak spot was in the Safari Web browser, software that's also used on Apple's computers. It's a good example of how flaws in PC software show up in a similar guise on cell phones. Cell -phone viruses have been around for nearly a decade, but many experts believe that serious threats could become a serious problem in the next couple of years. Cell phones have their own set of problems. For instance, mobile devices are easily lost or stolen; they are accessible via a number of methods, including the cellular network, Bluetooth, and, increasingly, Wi-Fi. A number of security companies that provide antivirus software for computers including Symantec, McAfee, and Sophos have also introduced products for mobile phones. >> More About: Cell Phones , Phones

Search Engines Watching You !
2007-07-17 15:39:00 What if there were a database containing what you've searched for, even embarrassing info? There is. The fact is, search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft Live Search all record and retain in their vast data banks any term that you query in addition to the date and time your query was processed, the IP address of your computer, and a cookie-based unique ID that unless you delete it enables the search engine to continue to know if requests are coming from that particular computer, even if the connection changes. Microsoft Live Search also records the type of search you conducted [image, Web, local, etc.], while Google additionally stores your browser type and language. And when you click on a link displayed on Google, that may also be recorded and associated with your computer's IP address. >> More About: Search Engines , Watching , Engines
