Programming is Dead. Long live Business Rules I was reading The Death of Computing and thinking about it, when I came across Too Much Code. Reading these two, I was reminded of The Problem with Programming. Now, I have earlier written about how you can beat complexity using business rules and speeding up your projects. Now, I would be speaking only of business application software here, as I myself started with application software only. The Million Dollar Question.. Are current programming languages the right tool to capture business decision logic? … How to Effectively Outsource Using Business Rules In an earlier post on Agile Enterprises, I covered this briefly. This post intends to fully take up the subject . Here are some of the major engineering issues that arise parallel/outsourced development scenario. Concurrent Engineering We want to be able to develop solution parts, capabilities in parallel. In case of a distributed development environment, this becomes r...

I need more channels of Expression !
2006-12-02 16:39:05
Now, in my other life as the product manager for a business rules management system, I write a very focused blog on the Business Rules technology. But, as I have started writing, I have felt this acute need for having another channel for expression. I come across so much stuff that I want to talk about. I cannot comment on that as the guy who talks about business rules. So, I decided to invent another avatar that I can use to write about whatever I want , and just freak out!

Student Information Systems - Can you do it better ?
2006-11-02 07:39:02
Now, check out this post on ZDNET Education. It prompted me to check out what goes into Student information System s, and surprise, I found a whole bunch of Business Rules there! Now What is a SIS? SIS are typically student information portals. You can expect to find the following information, facilities in an SIS Enrollment, re-enrollment into courses. Fees, scholarships & financial assistance & related matters Textbooks, news, exam papers & stuff The latest assignments, grades and other nerdy stuff Campus news, extra-curricular activities, jobs etc. Show me the Rules, dude ! Now, Universities offer a large number of courses.Even reasonably large universities might have 10,000 students, and the bigger ones might have anywhere between 30,000 - 40,000, I guess. A student might be eligible to only take certain courses, depending on his area of study His eligibility for a course might also depend on availability with that prof, or his GPA might also be a factor in his ge...

Mission Impossible - IV
2006-11-02 07:39:02
I came across this Business Rules use-case the other day . Background Cool Gadgets(fictional) is a Government lab. They do cutting edge research in security devices. They are an out & out Microsoft shop. They were running a government funded pilot project. The project was to build a new cool distributed security application, integrating inputs from a wide variety of sensors like Motion sensors, retinal sensors etc. The inputs from the sensors will be used to determine When & how will the doors to an high security environment open. What kind of tools can be used within a secure environment and what cannot be used The scope of the application can be a single high security room, a cluster of high security environments, and even geographically distributed sections. So what were the challenges? These security procedures change often, probably on a daily basis The people responsible for the security procedures could be scientists, technicians. Essentially, non-geeks!Therefore, ...

Online CRM - How good is it anyway?
2006-11-02 07:39:02
Now, I have been thinking of getting my own hosted blog. So this Monday, I picked one ISP and decided that I will get a hosted Wordpress blog up. Now this is what happened! Monday -> Sign up at the Dreamhost’s website, provide a domain name, make payment, and fax my credit card details over to the company. The Advertised account activation time by the ISP is 1 Business day Tuesday -> Nothing happens. So I log a support request. I get a response that the ISP is handling a lot of pending activations, and that they are sorry for the delay. The usual boilerplate! Wednesday , Thursday nothing happens! No email, no news, nothing Friday -> I am completely pissed off, and send them an angry mail, asking them to refund the payment. I am not interested in these guys anymore I get a defiant response from the ISP that they never got the FAX, and that they are closing my account, and making the refund 2 hours later, I get an automated email from their system saying that my email...

Business Technologies - Business growth drivers or Operation
2006-11-02 07:39:02
Talking of Business Techno logies, I am thinking of the following: Business Process Management Business Rules Management Business Intelligence Management That most serious growth driven organizations have adopted IT in a major way is well documented. So, in the current landscape, when all the organization have their own internal IT systems, automated processes, how can “A Business” differentiate itself “Another” in a continuous & sustainable fashion? Well, let me proceed and present an argument ! SOA in conjunction with BPM can help improve, stream line operations. They are essentially infrastructure technologies. Business Intelligence allows an organization to reflect on its “Business Life” and learn lessons and therefore Improve Business Rules, the Rules of the Game, the Rules of Customer & market engagement, control & drive all Business Processes. Like my dear friend VD, our marketing head honcho says, BRMS are typically “A...

Business Rules Engine Benchmarks - What do they mean?
2006-11-02 07:39:02
Now, this is should be interesting! Do you think the Miss Manners & Waltz performance benchmarks for Rule Engines really matter anymore? We have seen many vendors including my company push out performance benchmarks for Rete for the Miss Manners Test. Our Product Architect pointed out this link from the JBoss Website. Watch the conclusions! Now, BRMS vendors have many different Rule Formats like Sequential (Flow) Rules, Decision Tables, etc. There are no benchmarks available for comparing Ruleset’s performance using thes new formats. So, why is everyone just talking about the age old Manners & Waltz benchmarks ??? Due to significant advances in BRMS engines, the 2000 - 2005 Benchmark s will change significantly for 2006 and beyond. For example, Miss Manners and Waltz 50 will be dropped and we will examine all engines (at this time) using only Waltz DB and a yet to be determined sequential benchmark that probably will not use the Rete Algorithm. –James Own, 2000-20...

One Regular Shopping Day at Sainbury?s - It is all about Ser
2006-11-02 07:39:02
I was pointed out to this post in The Masked Blogger yesterday. A very interesting comment comes from this blog. ” I did my weekly grocery shopping at my local Sainbury’s Supermarket yesterday. I used their self-scan handset that let’s you scan items as you select them from the shelf. This means the checkout process is quick and painless. For the third time in a row, their “system” dictated all the items be re-scaned at the checkout. Ahhhh! Turns out my purchase of 1/2 dozen re-usable carrier bags after the self-scan handset had been “loaded” at the checkout at a previous visit was flagged as a variance in items scanned. The “system” had flagged me as someone they need to double check. I worked out I spend over (US)$10,000 a year at Sainbury’s. They left the customer relationship to be managed by the most junior and probably the lowest paid employee’s in their business and a flag in the database. A flag that wa...

Real Estate Call Centers - The Business Rules Connection
2006-11-02 07:39:02
TallTowers Corp (TTC) (fictional) is a Real Estate Company. Their Business is selling Property. They sell different kinds of properties, condo’s, apartments, Premium housing, commercial , and so on. An astounding number of buyers these days, including myself, start their home search online. This meant that the company ended up with a very large number of leads. Like many other organizations, TTC has its own call center with a number of professional agents. Each agent is qualified to sell/talk about a certain kind of a property. Now, call centers usually work like this! When calls come in, the first available agent takes the call. He talks to the prospect, tries to figure out what type of property the prospect is interested in If he is qualified to handle that property type, he continues the call OTHERWISE, he tries to transfer to the agent who can handle the call. So, what is the problem here? Well, the process is a dumb process. Many prospects calling in TTC’s call ce...

Domain Driven Design and Business Rules
2006-11-02 07:39:02
Udi Dahan has this post on Domain Drive n Design (DDD) that I found interesting.I would say that no discussion on DDD would be complete without a mention of Business Rules. After all, it is Business Rules that adds most of the complexity that surrounds building Business Applications. It is business rules that change most often and which come, at least as the programmers see it, come with so much different varieties that it is difficult to capture, model and implement quickly and in a bug free fashion. Business Rules apply in all the different layers of an application. Let me take an example to illustrate this. Imagine a Online Agent Broking System for Loan Products. Now, to qualify applicants, a whole bunch of questions would need to be asked of them. The set of questions depend on the answers to the previous ones, and the answers to the current ones determine the next set. Modeling this in code is certainly possible, but modeling the Q & A sequence as a Rule driven process will...
