Apple Confirms iPhone Sales Limit Raised from Two to Five
2007-12-11 05:05:00 After much speculation over the weekend about Apple quietly bumping up the sales limit on iPhones from two to five both in the U.S. and U.K., an Apple representative as confirmed on Monday morning that this is indeed the case.As such, you can now grab up to five iPhones at once without upsetting the natural balance of the universe. No word yet on why the limit was increased, but as earlier reports indicate, Apple probably discovered it had sufficient units on hand to meet Holiday demand. In October, Apple imposed a two-per-person sales limit on the iPhone in hopes of discouraging customers from reselling the phones, and to help reduce strains on inventory heading into the holiday shopping season. The sales limit was raised in both the U.S. and U.K., however, cash-only iPhone sales are still prohibited. O2: iPhone sales in line with expectations
2007-12-08 18:23:00 Incoming O2 chief Matthew Key has said that iPhone sales are currently in line with expectations and that in time, three out of four iPhone buyers will be new O2 customers, coming from other networks.“Over time, three out of four customers of the iPhone will be new O2 customers, because you can only get the iPhone by becoming a customer of O2,” Key told reporters in London. Key, who is set to take over as CEO of O2 when Peter Erskine steps down at the beginning of 2008, declined to reveal exact iPhone sales figures.Key also suggested that the good relationship between O2 and Apple might speed up the product’s arrival in Spain, most likely as Telefonica as the carrier. Apple’s 5-month-old iPhone passes Microsoft’s over-a-decade old mobile
2007-12-04 04:55:00 "Net Applications came out with its quarterly browser marketshare report this weekend. More surprising than the solid market share gains that the Mac platform made, was iPhone's phenomenal showing," Seth Weintraub blogs for Computerworld."0.09 percent [worldwide] may seem like an extremely small marketshare but when you consider that the iPhone has only been selling for 5 months and for most of that time was in one – albeit large – market (the U.S.), that share is amazing. Add another .01% for the iPod touch and Apple mobile platform is one out of every thousand pageviews across the Internet," Weintraub reports."The WindowsCE platform - all of the Windows mobile platform devices put together - only managed 66% of iPhones market share," Weintraub reports. "In under two quarters, Apple's handheld platform has passed Microsoft's over a decade-old mobile platform in terms of browser use."Weintraub reports, "Obviously this doesn't translate to handset marketshare. We know there a... More About: Mobile , Iphone , Month , Mont

T-Mobile Germany to offer unlocked iPhones for €999
2007-11-22 18:24:00 Yesterday the German unit of Vodafone had obtained a preliminary injunction against T-Mobile Germany yesterday prohibiting the carrier from selling iPhones that are locked to its network. The order was issued by a regional court in Hamburg, and its goal is to stop the sale of the iPhone if it is sold only in connection with a 24 month T-Mobile contract and/or is blocked in such a way that it can only be used in a T-Mobile network.Today in response to the court injunction, T-Mobile has announced that it will offer an unlocked version of the phone in Germany, for the price of €999 (about $1478).T-Mobile will also allow customers who purchased iPhones after Nov. 19 to unlock the device free of charge, although the company said that it will comply with the injunction until the situation has been clarified by a court — meaning that a removal of the injunction might lead to the end of unlocked iPhone sales as well. iPhone 1.1.2 software Update jailbreak successful
2007-11-10 06:37:00 "As expected, Apple released the 1.1.2 update for the iPhone overnight to coincide with its debut in the U.K. and Germany. As not expected, it's been sprung from jail already," Tom Krazit reports for CNET."New code for the 1.1.2 update was released last night by the same people responsible for the JailBreakMe program. It's still pretty raw, which means it's not really meant for those of us who aren't familiar with the command line. The latest hack works by applying the code to an iPhone that's still running the 1.1.1 firmware, then installing the 1.1.2 update.," Krazit reports."'Jailbreaking' your iPhone means that you're opening it up to third-party applications without Apple's authorization. Apple plans to release a software developer's kit in February that will let developers and users put authorized applications on their iPhones and iPod Touches," Krazit reports. "It's not clear whether the 1.1.2 update disabled phones that had been unlocked to run on other mobile net... More About: Software , Iphone , Update

Apple limits iPhone sales: two per customer, no cash
2007-10-29 16:07:00 Apple no longer accepts cash for iPhone purchases and now limits sales of the cellphone to two per person. The new policy started Thursday, said Natalie Kerris, an Apple spokeswoman. Before then, there was no cash restriction and the purchase limit was five per person. This new policy aims to help discourage people from reselling the phones, and should also help reduce strains on inventory heading into the holiday shopping season.“Customer response to the iPhone has been off the charts, and limiting iPhone sales to two per customer helps us ensure that there are enough iPhones for people who are shopping for themselves or buying a gift,” Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said.“We’re requiring a credit or debit card for payment to discourage unauthorized resellers.” Previously, there were no cash restrictions on iPhone purchases, and sales were limited to five per customer.Last week, Apple said that it estimates as many as 250,000 iPhones have been sold “with intention to un... iPhone Canada launch could be delayed over Trademark dispute
2007-10-15 04:51:00 A dispute between Apple Inc. and Toronto-based Comwave Telecom Inc. over the Canadian trademark rights to the name "iPhone" has yet to be resolved, adding another barrier to the launch of Apple's next-generation handheld device north of the border.Comwave, which markets a collection of voice-over-internet services and products under the name iPhone, has filed its opposition with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, or CIPO, to Apple's trademark application for the proposed use of a handheld and mobile device called the iPhone in Canada .The biggest stumbling block to the Apple iPhone launch in Canada remains a lack of a deal with a phone carrier, and so far no deal has been reached between Apple and Rogers Wireless, which is the only Canadian provider using the GSM (Global System Mobile) communications standard needed to run the iPhone. Before a deal could be reached, however, Apple would also need to secure the rights to the name "iPhone."'Co-existence is not possible'Comw... More About: Iphone , Launch , Trademark , Dispute

AT&T iPhone international roaming data plans
2007-09-27 15:50:00 To find just about everything you need to know about AT&T's roaming and data rates for the iPhone, you'll need the iPhone Center, easily accessible from the main AT&T wireless page (click the iPhone ad, then iPhone Center instead of searching for a local iPhone stock). Scrolling to the bottom of the compact iPhone Center page are some informational links for AT&T World Traveler, the wireless provider's suite of international plans and options that should cover most travelers (iPhone-toting and otherwise).AT&T allows users to add World Traveler to their plans for $5.99/month, giving them access to these discounted rates in over 80 countries. Now, the appeal of those rates can fluctuate depending on the destination country and length of stay, but going this route is worth it in many of these countries if you're staying for a week, maybe up to a month. Plus, if you're on business, keeping the same number and phone (with all of your contacts and data in it) is an ad... More About: International , Iphone , Data , Plans , Roaming
