TIM to launch 3G iPhone in June
2008-04-22 04:00:00
Italian carrier Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) is set to launch the 3G iPhone in June , according to a new report.La Repubblica, a well-respected Italian daily, claims the Italian selling price of the 3G iPhone may be substantially higher due to the lack of a revenue sharing agreement, and that TIM would begin carrying the phone several months before competitors in lieu of long-term exclusivity. It is unclear whether a change of this sort in carrier strategy by Apple would be a result of apparently slower than expected iPhone sales in Europe that have led to recent price-cuts on the phone in the UK and Germany.Evidence of a potential iPhone deal with TIM has notably been found in the device’s firmware, dating back to version 1.1.2, however, the iPhone still has not officially launched in Italy.

iPhone sellers braced for hit on unsold handsets
2008-04-19 03:11:00
"Mobile operators with exclusive contracts to sell Apple's iPhone are bracing themselves for significant losses on unsold stock as they clear the shelves to make way for a new, faster version expected this summer," Jonathan Richards reports for The Times Online."O2, which sells the phone in the UK, and T-Mobile, the German distributor, are said to have... had to take steps to shift stock on which they would now make a loss in order to clear the shelves for the new 3G iPhone, which is expected to be in greater demand in Europe than in the US because of the more advanced phone networks," Richards reports. On Tuesday O2 announced it was cutting the price of the iPhone by more than a third — from £269 to £169 — and two weeks ago T-Mobile made an even more drastic cut, from €399 (£319) to €99," Richards reports. "An O2 spokeswoman said the price cut was 'not a reactive move but part of a well thought out strategy of maximising the success of the iPhone in the UK.' T-Mobile w...

O2 to drop 8GB iPhone price to £169 through June 1
2008-04-17 03:03:00
O2 is set to cut the price of the 8GB iPhone by £100, to £169, according to a Mobile Today report, which has since been confirmed by the carrier. The £100 reduction, which will apply to the 8GB device on all O2 iPhone tariffs, will take place today(Wednesday) and will run until 1 June . It follows T-Mobile's decision to reduce the price of the handset from £315 to £78 in Germany. With price cuts and iPhone stock reportedly running low and not being replenished in the US, France and UK, speculation is mounting about the release date of the 3G version of the device. The price reduction follows O2's decision to increase the minutes and texts included in its £35 a month tariffs to 600 minutes and 500 texts in, up from 200 minutes and 200 texts. An O2 spokesman said: 'The special offer will make the iPhone an unbeatable proposition in the market, helping O2 to further gain market share.' The 16GB iPhone will not be included in the offer, and will remain £329.

I mean months.” De la Vega said of iPhone rivals from Samsung and LG, “You can look like an iPhone, but you’re probably not going to be like an iPhone.”He added, “There’s a lot of catching up to do.” AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson has previously said a version of the iPhone that runs on faster 3G data networks would be released in 2008; more recently, reports indicated that Taiwan’s Hon Hai had been awarded an exclusive contract to build a “more advanced version” of the iPhone, which would likely be a 3G model.Read full story

2008-03-20 05:02:00
Adobe Systems Inc. has begun work to create a media player destined for Apple Inc.'s iPhone, Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen said Tuesday, thus adding a new wrinkle to a standoff between the two long-term partners. In comments widely reported last month, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said the company's iPhone hadn't adopted Adobe's mobile version of its Flash program because of technical and performance concerns. At the time, he suggested Adobe work on a new version of the player. On Tuesday, when asked about the issue during a conference call with investors, Narayen said the company had since obtained the software developer tools Apple released last month. The tools will let Adobe build a Flash player for the iPhone, then distribute it through Apple's iTunes online store, he said. The tools Adobe is using are part of a broader effort by Apple to entice third-party developers to build and distribute iPhone software add-ons.

Time Magazine: iPhone the top gadget of the year
2007-12-12 18:35:00
Time Magazine has named the iPhone the top gadget of the year in its list of Top 10 Gadget s. Time says the handset “hanged the way we think about how mobile media devices should look, feel and perform.”The article says:The iPhone changed the way we think about how mobile media devices should look, feel and perform. The design is exceptional inside and out: It's got a slick glass-and-stainless steel case and an elegant touch screen loaded with eye candy. It's an iPod and a 2-megapixel camera. Images and video clips display vertically or horizontally — they reorient themselves depending on how you hold the thing. When the phone detects a wireless network within range — your own home wi-fi set up or somebody else's — it lets you tap once to connect, and then proceed with your Web surfing, Google mapping, emailing and other activities that can otherwise be painfully slow over AT&T's cellular network — the only one, unfortunately, that carries iPhone calls.
