Google Tops $700, gPhone due out in weeks!
2007-10-31 21:11:00 Hello guys! Its been barely a few weeks since we reported on October 10th that Google 's (GOOG) stock price has crossed the $600 point, since then of course we are hearing endless rumors that Google's phone initiative, better known as the gPhone, will be announced in a matter of weeks, The Wall Street Journal and Reuters reported Tuesday evening that Google is in "serious discussions" with Verizon Wireless (VZ) to put its mobile "GPhone" software on Verizon phones. Citing "people familiar with the matter," the paper claimed that Google was writing an open-source platform that would break the stranglehold of carriers over software on their devices by making development inexpensive and flexible. Programmers could tap into a phone's GPS unit for map-related services, the Journal mentioned as an example. Gmail, YouTube, and other common Google services would be tailored for the platform. The WSJ said in an earlier article published Monday that Asian cell phone makers HTC and LG ... More About: Tops , Gphone , Weeks

Facebook worth $15B?
2007-10-27 18:07:00 Hello guys, I've just ran across an interesting story on Wired about Facebook gigantic valuation it has received this week at around: $15 billion .So how for god's sake can anyone valuate a startup with an estimated $150 million in revenue which isn't wildly profitable, and doesn't have a clear revenue model at a value of $15 B?Hint: its all about its estimated user base and the potential to monetize its user's activity. Facebook has actually earned its valuation on the market's expectations, and expectations for its future are high. Sustained growth will be critical. Facebook has 50 million users today, and many believe it can ramp up to between 200 and 300 million users globally in the near term. The fact that Facebook is doubling its user base every six months bodes well for the future, says startup adviser and investor Dave McClure, but whether it can turn those users into cold, hard cash is the burning question. "If they can figure that out, then there's probably an eve... More About: Worth , Wort
2.2 Million Macs baby!
2007-10-23 23:15:00 Apple shares set a new all-time high Tuesday, surging more than 7% after they reported a 67% jump in fourth-quarter earnings powered by strong sales of Macintosh computers as well as its popular iPhone. Apple said Mac sales topped the 2 million mark in the September quarter. More than 1.1 million iPhones were also sold during the period. Apple shares rose more than $13 to $188.56 in early trading amid positive reaction to the report. The stock has already been on a strong run for the year, gaining more than 100% since the January introduction of the iPhone before Monday's report. "We believe that iPhone hype is creating a 'halo 2' that is driving sales of Macs and other products," UBS analyst Ben Reitzes wrote in a note to clients. Reitzes, also boosted his price target on the stock to $220 from $182, and added that he expects sales of the company's popular iPod line to "recover significantly in the December quarter.""Apple is firing on all cylinders as Macs w... Apple set to release OSX Leopard this friday!
2007-10-22 20:13:00 Apple is finally going to release OSX Leopard after the long waiting, this Friday . Meanwhile NY times has an exclusive interview with Apple CEO Steve Jobs, focusing on the new version of OSX, with some pretty interesting stuff there.“The Macintosh has a lot of momentum now,” said Jobs , “It is outpacing the industry.”Two research firms that track the computer market said last week that Apple would move into third place in the United States behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell on Monday, when it reports product shipments in the fiscal fourth quarter as part of its earnings announcement.Jobs also said that Leopard would anchor a schedule of product upgrades that could continue for as long as a decade.“I’m quite pleased with the pace of new operating systems every 12 to 18 months for the foreseeable future,” he said. “We’ve put out major releases on the average of one a year, and it’s given us the ability to polish and polish and improve and improve.”Apple has outpac... The end of Microsoft as we know it?
2007-10-20 22:09:00 John Dvorak wrote an interesting piece in his column at Marketwatch this weekend, he talks about Microsoft (MSFT) and his thoughts on what's next for the software giant. John claims that Microsoft is on the verge of becoming a holding company in the mold of Berkshire Hathaway. Which I must say doesn't sound that far fetched. Especially after Microsoft let the folks behind Halo go their own way. (after it keeps stakes in the company both as an equity investment and as a development partner). He also points out to an interview Steve Ballmer Microsoft CEO gave this week, which he thinks Microsoft is going to radically change its direction in the upcoming 12 months. Microsoft will probably do better as a holding company with many little companies within (think Office, a server software company, an OS company, a game console company) You get the point. Everyone has noticed that Microsoft is most successful at copying other people's ideas. This transformation into a holding company...
Google has done it again
2007-10-20 00:01:00 Shares of Google (GOOG) has once again rose into an all time high today despite the general selling mood in the markets, Google shares topped 650$ for the first time ever, as it reported its quarterly results yesterday after the markets closed. As a company that regularly beats Wall Street's earnings estimates, Google needed to blow away expectations on Oct. 18 to impress investors who have propelled the stock to record highs in recent days in anticipation of yet another blockbuster quarterly announcement. Anything less and investors would sell off the stock as they had in past quarters when Google just met or narrowly exceeded their projections. Google did not disappoint. The search-advertising giant said third-quarter net revenue rose 61%, to $3.01 billion, a number that takes into account the amount Google pays Web site owners to put ads on their pages. That soundly beat analysts' average estimate for sales of $2.9 billion. Not counting the amount of stock awarded to employe... More About: Done

Yahoo Searches for Profitability!
2007-10-17 22:18:00 Hi folks, Yahoo Inc.'s shares jumped more than 7% Wednesday morning after the company turned in better-than-expected third-quarter results as it works to turn around its Internet advertising business. The results won qualified praise from Wall Street analysts, though most acknowledged that Yahoo (YHOO) still has a lot of work to do to revive its business.Yahoo's stock has risen more than 28% in the past six weeks but remains below its peak of $33.61 set in early May. "Yahoo outperformed in what was to be its trough quarter in 2007. The company had accelerating fundamentals in its search business, as a result of cleansing of the partner network and Project Panama improving [revenue per search] trends," wrote Jordan Rohan of RBC Capital Markets in a note to clients Wednesday. Rohan lifted his price target on the stock to $36 from $34. Yahoo said third-quarter profits fell 5% from the year-earlier period. Net income for the three months ended Sept. 30 fell to $151.3 mi... Third-party iPhone apps coming in February
2007-10-17 19:09:00 Steve Jobs made it official Wednesday morning: third-party applications are coming to the iPhone. Apple's CEO posted another of his open letters to the world Wednesday on Apple's Hot News section of its Web site, confirming reports that a software development kit (SDK) for the iPhone will be released to developers next year. It's coming in Februrary, rather than January as reported, but application developers and iPhone owners will probably be able to wait the extra month. "We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users," Jobs wrote. "It will take until February to release an SDK because we're trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once--provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc." It always made sense for Apple to go down this road, since it was never going to w... What is a "Tech Stock"?
2007-10-15 20:01:00 Hello folks, Herb Greenberg at Marketwatch wrote a great article about the technology sector latest booming, and focus on the actual definition and tech stock. So what is a tech stock actually? Broadly defined, high-tech is anything having to do with telecommunications, semiconductors or personal computers, but that's actually a bit misleading. The article even suggests a way to check if one is actually a tech company, it must spend some exorbitant amount on research and development" resulting in products that more than pay their own way.(though that's also a bit misleading if you ask me).Greenberg criticizes the categorization of major investment-banking firms, mutual funds or stock indexes , into a one size fits all type of grouping, for no reason other than perception or guilt by association.According to Andy Kessler tech analyst , The easiest way to figure that out is to look at gross margins and the amount spent on research and development relative to sales. The clock is ticking for Joost
2007-10-13 12:40:00 TechCrunch is reporting today that Joost , the internet video system for distributing TV shows using peer-to-peer TV technology, which has been created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and Kazaa) is on a time bomb since broadcast-quality video streams—the main selling point of Joost’s peer-to-peer Internet TV client software—is quickly coming to the Web. Brightcove will soon be offering such streams to its video publishers using BitTorrent DNA. But the real threat to Joost will be coming from Adobe and its ubiquitous Flash player. in the next few months, Adobe is expected to incorporate the H.264 codec in all Flash players with the general release of Flash Player 9. You can already download a beta version from Adobe Labs. The H.264 codec is part of MPEG-4 and is the codec that Apple uses to compress all of the video downloads on iTunes. Once H.264 is part of Flash, the quality of streaming video on the Web will roughly double at current bandwidth spee... More About: Clock , Tick
What's with that Google phone?
2007-10-10 21:37:00 Hello guys, NY times did a great job, trying to put the together the puzzle surrounding Google phone initiative, better known as gPhone .According to the article, a large group of engineers at Google has been working in secret on a mobile phone project. As word about their efforts has trickled out, expectations in the tech world has been boiling. It seems Google wants to extend its dominance of online advertising to the mobile Internet, a small market today, but one that is expected to grow rapidly. It hopes to persuade wireless carriers and mobile phone makers to offer phones based on its software, according to people briefed on the project. The cost of those phones may be partly subsidized by advertising that appears on their screens. according to industry executives familiar with the project, the core of Google’s phone efforts is an operating system for mobile phones that will be based on open-source Linux software, a wise choice, since it will allow tons of developers and... Bubble 2.0 ?
2007-10-09 22:43:00 Goofy names, retread startup ideas, inexperienced entrepreneurs, free food- the Wall Street Journal does a nice job this morning laying out the gestalt evidence that we are in the midst of a second Silicon Valley bubble. The goofy-names index, for example, is back near its previous high. Consider Inc., which helps people organize all their Web communications. Or OrgooZipidee Inc., a purveyor of "digital goods" such as cellphone ring tones. "Are these names of dogs or are they names of companies?" asks Kate Mitchell, a venture capitalist in Foster City, Calif. "It is absolutely déjà vu," says David Chao, a venture capitalist in Menlo Park, Calif., who reports seeing lots of bad business ideas, from ever-younger entrepreneurs. "There's just as much junk now as there was in 1999," he says. They have a few strong points here, but I really think we're not going in a second bubble, the lessons of 99' has been learned, for the most part anyway, but what has really changed is the ... Google's Adsense+Youtube
2007-10-09 20:01:00 Google is expanding its AdSense program so that Web site publishers can display and make money off embedded video clips from YouTube content partners that have targeted banner or text ads, in addition to the traditional text ads that Google offers. Pretty soon Web sites will be able to get any kind of content they want on their sites and get a cut of the revenue from accompanying ads. This will boost Google's already successful online ad business and give publishers a way to earn more money on their sites. Soon, we'll see Google distributing all of the content a Web site could want. The new AdSense content distribution program is launching on Today with a new product called video units. Other types of media will be added to the program in the future, including audio, articles and games, said Christian Oestlien, a business product manager at Google. Until recently, Google, for the most part, has focused on distributing text ads to Web sites through its auction-based AdWords syst... More About: Youtube , Adsense
Facebook to start its own music business?
2007-10-07 22:19:00 Rafat Ali of PaidContent claims to have dug up more details about the mysterious "iTunes Store rival" that Facebook has allegedly been working on in recent weeks. And he says that sources indicate it's not Apple that should be worried, but rather MySpace, the once-formidable social network that Facebook has been gaining on steadily since the launch of its developer platform in May. Ali calls the new project an "artist platform," and says we'll be seeing it later this year. "The platform will allows (sic) bands and labels to create artists pages," he wrote, "and allow various widgets to be embedded for music promotion, organizing events, etc." Ali went on to indicate that the widgets in question would still be third-party Facebook platform applications, hence (possibly) quelling the concerns that an in-house Facebook music service would hurt developers' music-related apps. Allowing the creation of artist pages would be a direct blow to MySpace, which rose to fame partially be... More About: Business , Music , Start , Sine

The Unsung Heroes Who Move Products Forward
2007-09-30 19:51:00 Illustration by James Yang, NY Times NYtimes has just published an excellent story about why certain products and companies "rocks" and preserved as great and cool, while others don't. (Hint the products them selves doesn't necessary have to do with it). The article talks about process innovations that are essentially the core of what makes these companies great and make their products successful. Process innovations are basically the way these companies innovate at the level of the process of developing products, think about Google's physical network of computer (estimated at about 450,000 computers, and largely believed as the most valuable computer network on the planet). “My job is to make our customers look like heroes,” says John Feland, human interface architect at Synaptics Inc. Then he sums up the special role played by fellow members of the process tribe: “We are like Q to James Bond.” Anyway its a great inspiring article. Check it out. Boldinvestors ... Why Microsoft must abandon Vista to save itself
2007-09-28 20:21:00 Cnet has published a great article about Microsoft Vista with a bold statement: the folks at Redmond should dump Vista, and admit it has miserably failed (yeah like that's ever going to happen). I Couldn't agree more about Vista, though the writer is being a bit too harsh on it, the adoption of new OS takes time, you can't fully judge its performance just yet, for the long run Vista is unfortunately going to be what XP has been for the past few years, the dominate OS.As a Linux user I can't really comment about Vista, but from what I hear it really doesn't stake up against OSX, Linux, not to mention XP in terms of hardware demands, and compatibility. Here's a sneak peek of the article, check it out.The first indication that Microsoft should abandon Vista is its poor sales figures. According to a recent report titled "Windows Vista Still Underperforming in U.S. Retail" from NPD, Vista sales are significantly behind XP sales during its early days. Even worse for Redmond, some a... More About: Save , Abandon

Blown away!
2007-09-27 15:50:00 Microsoft: 'Halo 3' nets biggest day in entertainment history. Halo 3, the much-anticipated Xbox 360 game that launched Tuesday, set the all-time record for most revenue earned in a single day by any entertainment property, Microsoft said Wednesday. The company said that Halo 3, the third and final episode in the hugely popular franchise, netted $170 million in sales in the U.S. in its first day. If true, that would top previous records set by the motion pictures Spider Man 3 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. There's little doubt Microsoft has been pinning a great deal of hope on Halo 3 and was expecting it to be the must-have game for the Xbox 360, much as the original Halo was for the original Xbox when it came out in 2001. The theory is that many consumers will buy Xbox 360s to play the new game, though only time will tell if that is true. Microsoft did not release any new figures on immediate Xbox sales. Judging by initial reviews, the game is being ve...

Is Apple working on a Newton successor?
2007-09-26 22:24:00 Rumors are surfing up that Apple (AAPL) is working hard on a revamp modern version of its classic hand held PDA, Apple, which helped spawn the PDA market with its Newt on MessagePad line in the early '90s, plans to give the concept another go with a modern day reincarnation of the old fan favorite based on the company's new mutli-touch technology, AppleInsider is reporting. The reports also claims that Apple never gave up hope for its PDA newton, and for the past 18 months or so, a small team has been developing a Multitouch PDA, building on Apple's latest Multitouch products (iPhone, iPod Touch). With the initial iPhone now out the door and two successive models well underway in Apple's labs, it's believed to be full steam ahead for the modern day Newton project. Albums will range in cost from $5.99 to $9.99, with the best selling albums coming in at $8.99.
