Samsung Sch-i760 review
2007-11-28 10:36:00
We Swore off touch screens a while back but this SCH-I760 is a real pleasure. Everything we have been getting to review recently has been really cool! I don't know if its just in a good mood or the lack of sleep but this Samsung Windows Mobile 6 Pro with slide out keyboard is sweet. We loaded up some of our favorite software and messed around with it for a bit but unfortunately our demo didn't have a demo account associated with it. And seeming Verizon doesn't use Sims we could not swap one of our many sims into it.Don't get me wrong we love being one of the first kids on the block with a new toy but with out service we couldn't give it the once over - but it is running Evdo, WiFi B, G and a 1.3 mega pixel camera. The slide on the keyboard is very slick and habit forming. Be fore warned. Wifey thinks it is a little annoying :).It retails for $350 after a $50 mail in rebate from Verizon Wireless on a NEW two year contract. We are big fans of Samsung Products and have our eye on th...

What Does it Mean When My Computer Randomly Plays Classical Music?
2007-11-27 20:16:00
This is not a joke, I repeat, this is serious business! I found this while surfing around on Digg, and thought this was one of the most interesting "features" I have ever seen.According to Microsoft's Support website, if your computer starts playing classical music such as "Fur Elise", or even more modern hits like "It's a Small, Small World" this is cause for concern. From Microsoft Support:During normal operation or in Safe mode, your computer may play "Fur Elise" or "It's a Small, Small World" seemingly at random. This is an indication sent to the PC speaker from the computer's BIOS that the CPU fan is failing or has failed, or that the power supply voltages have drifted out of tolerance. This is a design feature of a detection circuit and system BIOSes developed by Award/Unicore from 1997 on.They go on to say that if you encounter this problem, it is time to get your computer into the PC Doctor to have it checked out. Though it may seem like a virus, it could very well be a ...

How can I identify my mainboard without opening the case?

I'll keep this short and sweet. If you're re-installing your OS, and need to know the motherboard model number, to grab the drivers online, check out CPU-Z. It beats opening your PC case and trying to find that tiny number hidden amongst the cables and drives :).Full post on Mind CircusCheck out our RSS feed. Need Free Tech Support? Turn off Aero Glass in Vista. A quick how to.
2007-11-27 14:23:00
John from Maryland writes in:Admin dudes can you help me disable Aero effects from my vista install? I am bored with them and I assume they use gobs of my memory. Hook me up!We have limited resources while we are on the road but here is the answer as told by the guys from Port16.com. Full credit goes to them as we used their step-by-step guide. If you are like me, pretty things are nice to look at, but I quickly get tired of visual effects if they don’t do anything for the operation of the computer. That is about how I felt about Aero Glass . It’s nice to look at, but I’m sure it eats up valuable system resources. If you aren’t like me, and somehow Aero Glass was turned off on your computer, then you’ll want to scroll down some, so you can see how to turn it on. Your first step, wether you want to turn it on or off, is to get to “Windows Color and Appearance”. Getting to Windows Color and Appearance Settings Right Click on a blank space on the desktop, and choose persona...

Is There Such a Thing as a Digg Strategy?
2007-11-26 21:59:00
I have been using Digg .com for quite a while now, and have only recently begun to understand how it is that Digg really works. So many times I have submitted a blog post from Bauer-Power, only to get one or two diggs, then have it fall off into oblivion. It was only recently that I discovered the true secret to Digg, and it was so simple that I couldn't believe it.That secret is simply to participate, and I mean actively participate. Start leaving comments, start voting on the submissions, and submit a lot of stuff yourself (not just your own blog posts). After that, When you submit stuff, go back to see who dugg your articles and start adding them as friends, and add their friends as friends and so on. Eventually you will have built up quite a large network of diggers. After your network is big enough, when you submit something, you will find that even your mildest of submissions will get 20 or 30 diggs!Next time you are browsing the diggy goodness, take a look at who is voting. You...

Futurama is back baby!
2007-11-26 20:08:00
We just caught The Whole Movie a glimpse of the new Futurama movie called Bender's Big Score. This is an hour and a half of pure futuristic geeky delight. Our pre-order has been in with Amazon for months but as of now it is all over the inter-webs. I just thought you guys would want to know! And here is another little tidbit - They cover how to detect SPAM in the first clip and it is hysterical. (Just to keep it a little technical). 1 Question though if we already paid for it via pre-order is it illegal for us to watch a copy obtained from some other means? What do you think?Bender gives up his email address reluctantly and it's: Bender@ILoveBender.com shoot him an email and he sends you back a bit of his witty Mexican humor! Viva La Bender Rodriguez. We are not advocating piracy especially for one of our favorite shows, but torrents are wonderful. As Bender would say.... 2007-11-26 15:00:00
Hi boys and girls,Do you remember when Ask The Admin covered a very interesting topic of Free Exchange services? For those who don't, you can look here, here and sometimes here.In a nutshell, this article talked about how me and my fiance' had to plan our wedding and had tons of appointments flying in from both directions. In order to get our two phones talking to one another and playing nicely, I used a free Exchange hosting service called www.Mail2Web.com to enable my WinMo PDA and my fiance's Blackjack to sync calendars every 10 minutes logging into the service through ActiveSync, as if they are the same phone. As a result, both phones would have the same calendar information, and keep it that way every ten minutes.I've had this system going for some time now, and it's been working just fine. I haven't even had to login to the control panel for anything! While figuring out this howto, I noticed in my own phone that WinMo gives you 4 categories of info items to sync, (as illus...

All that little Georgie , from BeingFive.com, heard was that The Admin is a Microsoft Certified Admin taking questions. He wants to know if we have ever met Bill Gates.Yes we have meet Bill Gates and In all fairness we do say we answer ANY technical related questions. How can i get more traffic to my blog-site? What attracts readers to a blog? Will you look at my site Mr. Admin? This one I'll field myself right off the bat because I have tried everything, and I mean everything. I have stayed up late nights and worked on traffic, and only traffic, for days on end. Mind you, we are talking free traffic not pay per hit or anything that costs money.Of course, your first course of action should be to learn about tracking your new website's traffic via some sort of analytics program. We use Google Analytics and Statcounter; which seems to be one hundred percent free. Next, after you see your traffic and where its coming from and going to you should get some meta tags into the html on your site so people can find you via search engines. This is the same reason you should label your posts.Next, make sure you have lots of solid, original content up before you start hitting up search engine submission sites. If someones first impression of your site is "s...

So there you are at Starbucks sipping on your latte, and surfing on their incredibly high priced wi-fi with your brand new Alienware laptop thinking to yourself, "Self! This is a mighty good latte!".A few minutes later, you slip into a latte induced coma (Work with me here.) After about an hour or two you wake up with foam and cinnamon all over your face, and a splitting headache, but that isn't the trouble. The trouble is that someone snatched your new Alienware laptop with all of your sensitive personal information (edit: a 24esque - mission impossible attempt in your stories to friends and family. We know how it goes. Que up the theme music). Stuff like bank information, passwords, etc! No biggy right? I mean you have a pretty good password. Seriously, who is going to guess banana12 right?WRONG!With FREE software available on the internet, you can boot up to a CD and browse files, or even change the administrators password on your laptop. Interview with CES 2008s own Tara Dunion.
2007-11-17 15:00:00
CES is one of AtA's favorite events of the year. Michael Meyer and Karl Gechlik ventured out to the NYC Press Preview here and our RFID badges arrived at AtA headquarters yesterday. It's printed RFID which is very cool and warrants a whole other post. But in the mean time here is a a short Q and A interview with Tara Dunion on CES International 2008 and Karl Gechlik. We covered the pre-CES Media Show called Unveiled hereAtA We absolutely loved last years CES. What can we expect to be different this year? CES Each year we strive to make the next year’s CES better and even more compelling then the previous year. This year is no exception as CES is the Must Attend industry event this January. The digital entertainment story is going to be huge, with Sony Pictures Entertainment and NBC Universal exhibiting on the showfloor for the first time and bringing the power of their content properties to CES. We are also launching a new “Technology in Emerging Countries” program whi...

MJ writes to us that her machine runs updates around lunch time and she keeps getting the prompt do you want to restart now?Not only is it annoying - sometimes she clicks yes by accident and her whole world comes crashing down. (See the fix for this at the bottom of the post - not for the faint of heart or slow typers!!!)Not only will we show you how to disable the automatic restart option after updates via Group Policy we will show you how to quickly cancel a reboot.Go to Start –> Run, type “gpedit.msc”.Go to Computer Configuration –> Administrative Templates –> Windows Components –> Windows Update . Look for option “No Auto Restart For Scheduled Automatic Update installation” and Enable that option. This will make sure that your computer is not reboot automatically, instead it will just notify you for a reboot. It will be users choice as to when to reboot your computerIf in case you want it to notify you again and again, after a specific interval of time, then look ...

Can I Change The Inbox Font in Microsoft Outlook?
2007-11-17 08:40:00
I have this user who just got upgraded to a new laptop. When he logged in for the first time and opened Outlook , he was in for a shock. The fonts were extremely small (Apparently he is as blind as a bat, and likes larger fonts). Anyway, he called me to fix it.If you run into the same thing, here is what you do in both Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007:Outlook 2003:1) Click on View > Arrange By > Current View > Customize Current View 2) Click on the 'Other Settings' button 3) Click on the Column Font , Row Font and AutoPreview buttons to change your fonts 4) Click OK, then OK again, your fonts should now be changed in your inbox list.Outlook 2007:Note: Microsoft made this a little more intuitive in this version1) Click on View > Current View > Customize Current View 2) Click on the 'Other Settings' button 3) Click on the Column Font, Row Font and Auto Preview buttons to change your fonts 4) Click OK, then OK again, your fonts should now be changed in your in-box list.I hope this...

Can I shrink a really long URL to make it easier to share?
2007-11-16 14:09:00
They say necessity is the mother of all inventions, except for the bastard children of people looking to be lazy and productive.Tinyurl has been around for a long whiles now and many of you probably use it on a daily basis and don't even know it. Websites use it to hide links, people use it to make it easier to tell someone a link over the phone as well as using it to overcome the limitation of how many characters you can type in a mobile browser. It is very straight forward and best of all it is free. As we say at Ask the Admin - Free is for me!Just go on over to http://www.tinyurl.com Input the link and boo yah you are returned with a short link.Use it how you will. For good or evil - to get porn links through email filters, freak out your friends with unexpected goatse or something equally as disturbing... 2007-11-16 06:42:00
I can't give you X-Ray vision. I can't even explain this picture on the left (Freaky Ain't It??). But I do have an answer to seeing through one window to another. If you are like us then you are constantly checking documents and switching between windows. You need to see your data and write your articles in separate windows, Now wouldn't it be peachy keen if you could see through your browser's window - even just a little? That way I could have an Word document or an Excel sheet open behind an editor window and just keep on type, type, typing away. And wouldn't it be awesome if it was free and worked on most Window s machines? Well here we go check out: Glass2k from Chime Software. The project is dead but the software works and does just what I need it to.It allows me to set transparency for any window and the task bar. Run it and right click on your windows Title bar and choose your transparancy in incriments of 10%. Cool app and at a price we like - Free. Any one else have anot...

Google to give away free Cell Phone Service?
2007-11-15 15:02:00
Hey Boys and Girls,Shhh, this one is a little secret for all you hardcore aTa fans...We here at www.asktheadmin.com have an inside scoop that is sure to be the talk of the (virtual) town about Google and their new Gphone. We all know it's reality that Google is, in fact, working on their own phone. It's been buzzing for months. Can you say G-Phone ?We also know, for fact, that The Big Goog have been trying to get their hands on their own cell-radio frequency from the FCC. This has been old news for months. Can you say 700 Mhz?We also know that GOOG have been working heavily on an operating system for phone hardware. Can you say Android? But what we have also cleverly found out, from a source who REALLY prefers we leave her name and whereabouts undisclosed, is that Google really is looking to move in on, and compete with, all the other big cellphone companies. Our source works for a sub-contractor for one of the PR companies working for Google, and while details are shaky at best, I di...

Open Source Phones? What does Android mean for the mobile market?
2007-11-15 10:20:00
Good afternoon! My name is Scott Webster and I am one of the administrators over at AndroidGuys.com. I’d like to thank Karl for letting me fill in today as a guest blogger.I’m here to talk briefly about the current state of Smartphones as well as what we might come to expect from Android and the capability of open source phones. As of right now, there are only three major options being used in the US for smartphones and PDA phones. You have RIM’s Blackberry, Microsoft Windows Mobile , and Apple’s iPhone/OSX. Sure, you also have niche devices like Helio’s Ocean and the T-Mobile Sidekick, but predominantly, these three are what makes up the high end phone market today. Overseas however is a different story. Nokia and Symbian have pretty much dominated the industry and is slowly seeing market share build over here. While each of these platforms is unique, they share very similar features from one to the next. Higher end camera’s, internal memory, and the ability to insta...

CES NYC Press Preview Unveiled!
2007-11-14 18:47:00
The Admin and Commodore 64 attended the CES International 2008 Press Preview last night. We were on a mission to find new gizmos and gadgets for our upcoming post"It's A Geeky Christmas! What to get the geek in your life for the holidays."We searched high and low (mostly near the fancy finger foods and at the bar ) then we hit the exhibits. Somehow we wound up with an Exhibitor pass instead of the standard press pass... I started to wait in line to get it all fixed up but then the security guard told me i can go right into the show floor - which was not going to be open for another half hour. Sweet! No line at the bar... No line for food. And no lines at the booths! Super Sweet. We found a few really cool stocking stuffers and some great low and high end gifts. Some brand new technology and some re-vamped old ones. Check out the highlights: A Gold and Fake Snake Skin Motorola Razr V8 The Dragon is a premium class-1 Bluetooth headset with 100-meter range and dual-mic noise suppressio...
Why is the actual size of my hard drive different from what the box says?
2007-11-14 18:11:00
In the old days, when hard drives first came out, the discrepancy between advertised amount of storage and what you get was minuscule. Nobody really noticed that because of a technical disparity, a 1 gb drive (which back than was HUGE) only had a disparity of a relatively small amount of mb. These days the gap is widening.Dr. Macenstein from Macenstein.com writes:"Let me ask you something. If I were to sell you a dozen eggs, would you be OK with opening the carton and finding 9 eggs? If a car companywere to put up a big sign advertising their new mini van had 100 cubic feet ofcargo space, but it actually had about 75, do you think you would have the rightto complain? Then why is it we all just accept the misleading way hard drivemanufacturers advertise the amount of space on their drives?"I'd have to say this guy is right on his money. Beyond that is the fact that the value of a kilobyte has gone down since then, but what seems minuscule to us now, was not minuscule then, but for so...

The Ultimate Guide to Being Married to a Nerd!
2007-11-12 19:00:00
Hey Boys and Girls,Throughout history, science has dissected the inner working of every race of man. We've disassembled soldiers, warriors, policemen, firemen, ninjas, samurais, and thanks to shows like Discovery's "Dirty Jobs", we've gotten an intimate look at their day to day. But what about the inner mind workings of today's Nerd ? We are today's code soldiers, and tomorrow's battlefield soldiers as remote war tech makes it's way. What makes us tick? What do we think about during those lulled moments at the dinner table? These questions are most often asked by the significant others of the aforementioned Nerds. There has not yet been a guide to the inner workings of the Nerds' mind, until now.The folks over at RandsInRepose have addressed this concern, here is a snippet:Understand your nerd’s relation to the computer. It’s clichéd, but a nerd is defined by his computer, and you need to understand why. First, a majority of the folks on the planet either have no idea how...

I Just Bought a Vista Machine Can I Legally Downgrade to XP Pro?? Plus Some
2007-11-11 07:40:00
HELL YEAH YOU CAN!Don't think for a second our favorite monopoly would ever let the competition hone in on unhappy upgraders! We have heard this question many times in one form or another since Vista 's birth - and it usually involves people mentioning torrents and key gens. STOP right there and don't go that route.Seriously dude don't do it to yourself. You don't want to risk injecting malicious software into your OS before you even use it. There is plenty of time for that afterwards! We know all systems manufacturers and integrators are ONLY shipping Vista now and lot of IT shops have not yet adopted this new OS for one reason or another. You will be happy to know that Microsoft does have a policy regarding this and it keeps it buried pretty well. Well wouldn't you if you could sell more licenses because of it? Microsoft has something called downgrade rights as you can see from the screenshot below and via this link here to the PDF. So they tell you to install the Windows XP ...

I have been meaning to write about my upgrade to my recent dd-wrt router firmware. It added all sorts of geeky goodness normally only available on dumb expensive routers of the Cisco or other high end routers. Time is a commodity I just don't have and El Di Pablo a regular AtA guest blogger and author of Bauer-Power just covered it. Check it out:I got a call at work from my wife yesterday saying that the internet wasn't working. Naturally, I told her to reboot the cable modem and the router. When I got home, she said that the reboot didn't work. So I started fiddling, and checking the usual stuff. Anyway, long story short my router, as we used to say in the Navy, "took a shit."That's right, my el-cheapo D-Link DI-624 was no longer responding to anything, even after a factory reset. All the kings horses and all the king's men couldn't put my D-Link back together again. I figured it was about time. I had that thing for almost three years, and it was the cheapest one in the store ...

Useful Windows Keyboard Shortcuts for IT Pros - Part 1
2007-11-09 17:59:00
Like most IT Professionals, I use a whole array of keyboard shortcuts to speed up my working throughout the day. In this two-part series, I’ll share some of the more useful ones with you. In this post - Part 1 - I'm going to cover shortcuts that I use when generally working with, and troubleshooting, Windows . In Part 2, I'll cover shortcuts for Working with Files and Text. Part 1 - Working with Windows Control + Shift + EscapeInstantly brings up Task Manager. Always handy for troubleshooting, and especially useful in a Domain environment, where the traditional Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up a Windows Security panel. WinKey + DShows the Desktop, minimizing all windows. Press it again, and all your windows are restored. This shortcut is superior to WinKey+M, as it retains all window positions.WinKey + LLocks your workstation. Incredibly useful if you work in IT, and frequently need to leave your PC at a moment’s notice. Alt + TabSwitches between open windows. To scroll “backwards” u...

Compiz Fusion for Ubuntu... What is that? Get your 3d on!
2007-11-09 17:05:00
My man Karl, (Who is a new father by the way for those just coming out from under your rocks) asked me to elaborate on what exactly Compiz Fusion is, and why it is so damned cool.First of all, I want to say that I am actually kind of a n00b when it comes to Compiz Fusion , and the whole 3D desktop thing. I only recently started using it with the latest version of Ubuntu (Gutsy Gibbon 7.10) where it is installed by default if your graphic card supports it.Let me give you a little bit of a background on the project. It wasn't always called Compiz Fusion. No, according to Wikipedia:Compiz Fusion is the result of a merge between the old Compiz community plugin set "Compiz Extras" and the parts of the Beryl project. That is fine and good, but seriously, what is it? In short, it is a set of plugins and other elements independent of the window manager core which provide a bunch of cool animations, and 3D effects. One of the most well known effects is the 3D cube used when moving from one ...
