My Windows 2008 Server is in reduced functionality mode. HELP!
2007-11-09 08:10:00
Microsoft allows you to run Windows Server 2008 as a trial for 30 days to get the feel of it just like Vista. If you have gotten caught out there and went past the 30 days you realize you can't get at your stuff. You are in reduced functionality mode - and thats just not fun.By now, I'm sure you have heard about the slmgr "hack" (From Download Squad) that allows you to run Windows Vista for up to 120 days without activation (instead of 30). Well, it appears that the exact same hack works on Windows Server 2008 (RC0).If you wait too long and it prompts you to activate upon boot, select reduced functionality mode. When the IE window opens use the address bar to navigate to C:WindowsSystem32cmd.exe. Enter the slmgr text from there, wait for the confirmation box and reboot. After some testing we were able to get this working 8 times on a Vista install - not practical but great in a bind. Will this work on Server 2008 as well? Let us know!Check out our RSS feed. Need Free Tech S...

Does Vista still share C$ by default? Nope and here is the Registry quick f
2007-11-07 06:52:00
Davey writes to us that he needs to get access to his home Vista machine over the wireless network and it would make his life easy if he can do it - like he does it in XP or 2000.Dave connects using a browser or command line to file://machine/drive$. As we have covered before the $ makes the share hidden. (oh!) So that's why it doesn't show up if you just type file://machinename/ at the command prompt. So we did some digging for you Davey boy and you can definitely do it. Its a registry tweak and just don't forget that foxing with the registry is dangerous make a full backup first and don't blame us if you don't!!Ever since Windows 2000, Windows has always created a few shares administrative purposes. The most often used being, \machinenamec$ , because it's an easy way to get access to an entire drive, if you have permissions to be there. As a default, only Administrators have access to it - the fact that there's a trailing $ means that it won't show up in the Network browse...

I can't go home without these files working! What The Hell Happened To My Task Managers Tabs and Options?
2007-10-23 15:00:00
A reader from Idaho was seriously freaked out this morning after a late night @ the computer and sent us a picture of their task manager in a strange state. They asked for their identity to be with held so here is a screen-shot of a random person's task manager in a similar mode.Have you seen this before? Take a look over on your right. You probably have see it and had to idea how you did it. This is what is called "Tiny Foot Print" mode. Don't worry its nothing to get all frantic about dude. It happens by double clicking (usually by accident) on the gray border which we have so kindly dotted for you in the picture on the right. And here is the Microsoft KB article on it here. They say you can also hit, CTRL+ALT+SHIFT at the same time, and while holding them down press ENTER CTRL+ALT+SHIFT at the same time, and while holding them down press ENTER, to remedy your issue as well.Hope that helps Idaho! Adding Calendar functionality to Mozilla Thunderbird
2007-10-23 07:49:00
Before I start, I should probably introduce myself a little. My name's Phil, and I run a blog at twistedethics.com, but I'll be cross-posting all the good stuff on to here as well. By day, I'm responsible for the IT within a small company in the United Kingdom. We run a mixed-OS network, so you can be sure I'll be blogging about both Linux and Windows. I'm also a big fan of open-source alternatives for home and business, so you'll be seeing plenty of that stuff too. Which, conveniently, leads me to my first blog post!In a bid to save money where we can, and detach ourselves from Microsoft reliance, we've deployed Thunderbird as a replacement for Outlook across a few workstations. We've found that when people switch from Microsoft Outlook to Mozilla Thunderbird they often miss having the calendar/task features. Fortunately, you can add Calendar and Task functionality to Thunderbird with the Lightning add-on.Go to the Lightning download pageRight click on the download link a...

Windows Utility for Beginners - Keep Your Machine Running Spiffy.
2007-10-22 20:00:00
Before I was into heavy registry editing the only way I knew how to Mod a computers look and feel was something called TuneUp Utilities. That is what I used back in day and never really thought about it since. Here we are in 2007 and I'm using Norton's Tune Up program. Lets just say it leaves something to be desired and I have started looking around for something that did the job better. We needed a registry cleaner, a disk cleaner/utility and something to quickly check the machine for errors. Oh and it needed to be ULTRA simple to use and IDIOT-PROOF. I don't want anyone SCREWING up their machines because they wanted to do a little house keeping. My parents are just starting to get into the whole "Internet" thing and I wanted something I could set on a schedule to clean up their slow P4 machine. It would be great if the whole thing ran behind the scenes with no user interaction. And on top of it - if they do use it, I need to be able to un-do their changes dumb quick.I tried Wind...

Common Issues with WiFi and Solutions...
2007-10-22 17:17:00
I brought this one From Guest Blogger El Di Pablo back up for you guys to outline some of the other issues with Wi-Fi that people have been writing in about. I guess the WiFi rush came from this article on how I have grown to hate wi-fi. Hit us up in the comments if there is anything still rattling around in your head with regards to WiFi:I originally posted this on my blog, but I thought we could post it here too. I was inspired to write this by one of the questions Karl got the other day about a user's wireless setup at home. I hope some of this helps:Everybody wants to get on wireless these days. It is sort of "the thing to do." Funny thing though is, nobody seems to know what they are doing when it comes to wireless. They think they crack open the box plug in some cables and away they go. Well, it isn't really quite that simple.Issue number one, would be security. You absolutely MUST think about security if you implement a wireless network at your home or office. If you think ...

Defragmenting in Apple OS X - Don't Do It
2007-10-20 17:55:00
Defragmenting is just part of the Windows landscape. We've been doing it since...I dunno...Bill Gates hit puberty (Really?? he did?). Its just a habit, a way of life. Old habits die hard, even when users switch from a Windows OS to a new OS like Mac OS.So, many users who have switched from PC's to Macs think that disk fragmentation is a concern in OS X, a problem that needs fixing. Truth is, except in very limited circumstances, its not a problem. In fact defragmenting an OS X disk can cause more harm than good. Fragment ation often creates a problem when small additions are saved onto files and overtime these little files end up spread all over the disk, slowing the machine down. However, innovations in software and hard drive technology (capacity, cache size, read speeds) allow many modern applications to rewrite the revised file in its entirety rather than saving all of the little attachments off in the recesses of the disk. Further, in recent OS X versions (10.2 and especially ...

What a Dream Come True! DreamLinux that is!
2007-10-20 13:56:00
I mentioned in a recent post that I recently aquired an older Pentium III laptop with only 384MB of RAM. It really isn't fast enough to run Windows XP without trimming the fat.I originally was going to put Xubuntu on it, because Xubuntu is designed to be more light weight than regular Ubuntu, because it uses the more minimal XFCE interface. It turns out though that XFCE is still a little too beefy for even this computer. Sure it installed, and ran fine, just a little slower than I would like. I did try XP with the fat trimmed like I mentioned above, but that was still God awfully slow. Not wanting to give up, or revert to an older version of Windows, I decided to keep poking around in the Linux world for a solution. There are a lot of them out there that will run just find on such a machine, but the trick it so get one that my wife won't mind using when going to the Java Mama's coffee shop with my little girl.II found the perfect distro for my wife in Dream Linux! Own The Keenest Water Faucet...On the cheap!
2007-10-19 16:49:00
So we don't usually gush over retail household products but this is really cool and can be bought with the notion of safety in mind. You attach this doo-hickey that is battery operated and it changes the color of your water with LED's depending on the temperature of the water. Its also only $20 so we might just give it a try! Here this is from the ThinkGeek website that sells it.Tired of that same old monotonous water? Bored with water that doesn't look like futuristic alien mouthwash? Need to make your midnite bathroom appointments more exhilarating? Then you need to get the LED faucet light attachment from ThinkGeek. You can turn any faucet in your home into a streaming fantasia of techie-bliss in just minutes. How does it work? Just attach to the end of your faucet (universal adapters included), and when the water flows through the magic chamber, it simply turns on the LED array and illuminates the stream with soothingly powerful hues. But wait, there's more! You get to choose ...

How to take a laptop apart.
2007-10-19 12:57:00
I will keep this as broad as possible to help a wide range of people. If you need more specific help please leave us a comment and it WILL be answered. So you have decided that either something inside your shinny laptop is broken and needs to be fixed or you want to upgrade something (memory, hard drive, internal card, etc.). Then you have come to the right place. I have broken my fair share of laptops (Every thing from plastic casings to losing screws and back to just not remembering where parts go).But all of that is a thing of the past my friend because I have disassembling a laptop down to a science. Now every machine is different. Even machines from the same manufacturer are different so before we begin go Google the hell out of your laptops model name and number. See if you can find a Service Manual or a step by step guide to taking apart your laptop. We found this resource for Toshibas here. Post it up if you know where to find other brands. Now I am sure you are wondering why ...

2007-10-19 11:00:00
Hey Boys and Girls,Every once in a while a proggy comes along that is simply a staple of your data diet. A requiem for your software library that just seems to always be useful, especially if you follow the advice and antics of The Admin here at AskTheAdmin.com.One of the most talked about subjects here is the issues that arise from being caught without a backup. Now, usually we talk about backups in the PC or laptop sense, but these days PDA's , especially Windows driven ones, are becoming more and more prevalent in society and in our every day life. It's also inevitable, especially under any build of Windows, that you chance losing your data. Notwithstanding the inherent faults in Windows; having all your life's info in a device that can be dropped, stepped on, kicked, flung accidentally while speaking in an animated fashion (git her done), melted, forgotten and otherwise mistreated can be very precarious. The need for a backup solution for Windows Mobile has arrived. And along w...

We here @ AtA don't Judge... So here you go weirdo... Rip away!We all know VLC plays ripped DVD files but did you know it could rip them as well? Surprise Surprise... The VLC media player (VLC) is a versatile tool. It can handle virtually any media file, it can play network streams such as Internet radio stations, and it can stream media contents across the network. But that's not all; VLC can also 'stream' media to a file in a user-defined format, which makes it a handy transcoding tool. The most obvious use of this feature is to backup your film DVDs, a process that VLC makes straightforward. While VLC doesn't support so-called DVD shrinking (fitting a film onto a single-layer DVD or even CD), it's...

Why can my Vista Sidebar only hold a small number of gadgets?
2007-10-18 06:13:00
When I first heard about the Windows Sidebar that comes with Vista I was very excited. I thought Wowie, (yeah i say wowie and I give High-Five all the time too - What?!?) I am going to get every widget possible into my sidebar and be uber productive. I might be over exaggerating - just a little :) Then at first glance, the Windows Sidebar looked as though it can hold only a few widgets/gadgets. So much for the uber convenience I was looking for. When you fill up your Sidebar, adding another gadget makes the one on the bottom disappear, requiring you to delete a visible one to bring it back. But as it turns out the Sidebar has more than one screen. When more than the visible number of gadgets are in use, the excess gadgets flow out onto another screen. The arrows at the top of the Sidebar take you from one screen to another. Even your less-used gadgets can be just one click away. So what are your favorite "Gadgets "? Edit:(I still have this urge to call them Widgets.)Send your tips in...

WiFi SUCKS I Am Going Back to my wired connections.
2007-10-17 15:24:00
Everyone jumped on board with Wi-Fi lickety split when it came out. And hey I am one of them. It was supposed to be the technology of the future - wasn't it??I ran my 802.11a when it was in draft and I thought it was really cool. And around the time 802.11b came out it actually became usable for surfing the net. Mind you it is at its best a 10 mbps connection and in all actuality it was a slight fraction of this. I had been suffering from horrible interference on my home phone and wifi and recently found a solution to the phone portion. If I could solve one problem why not the other. So I started changing channels on my router moving the base station and still I would go from a solid 54g connection to a crawl and then dead in the water until I do a repair. I updated wi-fi drivers, I flashed roms, I got repeaters, antennas I swear I did everything. We covered all the common wifi problems here if you want to look them over.My poor Tivo and Media centers were the ones suffering (edit:...

Amazing Tool: How can I get a dropped screw out of my server case easily?
2007-10-17 06:01:00
John wrote in that he dropped a screw into his HUGE server case as he was about to seal it up. Now who wants to take it apart again just to get that stupid little screw?
