How to use Shadow Copy or Previous Versions on Older Versions of Windows.
2007-10-05 14:56:00
Shadow Copy is one of Microsoft's server features that I always rant and rave about. I use it habitually and so should you. For those of you who don't know A shadow copy is essentially a previous version of the file or folder at a specific point in time. It creates copys or revisions of your files on a schedule so you can grab a copy before you made some stupid edits. Or if your co-worker deleted a file you have been working on... No problem Shadow Copy to the rescue...Some people say this feature is only available to Vista Ultimate Business Clients but over @ AskTheAdmin we know that this has been available to us for almost 4 years now running xp and using server 2003 standard as our file server. You don't even need to be running active directory for this one all you have to do is create a share. and then activate the previous version tab from the server. It will ask you how often you want it to make a copy for you and where you want to keep the data. the best part is it uses an i...

How can I use Speech Recognition in Windows Vista?
2007-10-04 13:08:00
Have you ever wanted to talk to your computer? You know like "Music On" or "Kill Stupid Flanders!" Well in Windows Vista , you can! And it is as easy as this: Click the Start menu >> Click Control Panel >> Click Speech Recognition . >> Click Start Speech Recognition >> Now you can tell your computer what to do! Be sure to take the Speech Tutorial first to get your computer use to your voice. All versions of Windows Vista , even the Home Basic version already have one of the most powerful speech recognition systems available for consumer consumption. Microsoft has invested lots of dough in research and development regarding speech recognition over the years. Lets just say these boys have just about done it right this time! I have been trying to talk to my computer since my Commodore 64 and lets just say it has always been a kind of 1 sided conversation. But I had some big surprises on my hand when my computer actually responded by doing the tasks I requested. SWEET!Just to give you a hea...
Web Stats 2.0: Me Likey Clicky
2007-10-03 17:00:00
Take a look at the graph to the left. Does something look unusual about yesterdays traffic? It seems we are BLOWING UP all of a sudden and we love it! Thank you for all your continued support. Yes we are talking to you - our readers! It is great to know people want to hear what we have to say! And thank you (strangely) for you birthday wishes (it's tomorrow - how did you guys know?? No that's not strange @ all, just a little frightening!)So in honor of us breaking the 24,000 hit mark in one day, (blowing our previous record of 14,000 to shreds) we will be reviewing a new (well new to us) web stats service that runs on web 2.0 aka Ajax. For the non-technically inclined that means its the bee's knees. In addition to being all purty like it handles a lot more data than StatCounter does (@ least for free). StatCounter caps us @ 500 lines (hits) to analyze at any given time. Don't get me wrong it keeps a running total but thats about it. And I feel that we have seriously out grown th...

Is there something better than Windows Media Player on a Windows Mobile Dev
2007-10-03 10:20:00
Joey writes to us:"Why doesn't WMP Support all my video formats? Why can't I download codecs for my Mobile Windows Media Player ??? Is there a way to play all my videos? Oh and can you make it free? Thanks!"Ah ha! We were reading this email as I was watching the season finale of The IT Crowd (Torrent here - funniest one yet!!) on my Dopod S530 using TCPMP. This is a free media player that seems to digest anything I can spit at it. It works great and has all the options I have gotten used to on my desktop.TCPMP has been abandoned as a project but remains widely available and used. There are versions all over the net for WM, Palm and soon other platforms. Check out this link for downloading. According to their website:This open source media player project is discontinued. Check out the commercial CorePlayer software or the soon to be released open source BetaPlayer project.TCPMP could be seen running on Morris O'Brian's Pocket PC on the popular television drama 24. Murphy's Laws of Computing
2007-10-03 10:00:00
I was given this by my first manager in an IT gig. I came across it again during a late night search trying to solve a downed production server without going into the office... Turns out I glanced @ it, got to number 10 and a light bulb popped over my head. I hate consultants and I hate tech support. Hope this brightens your a day - and let me know if you know the REAL author.Murphy's Laws of Computing When computing, whatever happens, behave as though you meant it to happen. When you get to the point where you really understand your computer, it?s probably obsolete. The first place to look for information is in the section of the manual where you least expect to find it. When the going gets tough, upgrade. For every action, there is an equal and opposite malfunction. To err is human...to blame your computer for your mistakes is even more human, it is downright natural. He who laughs last probably made a back-up. If at first you do not succeed, blame your computer. A complex system ...
Attention Websmasters - Do you socialize? Want to make it easier?
2007-10-02 06:47:00
AskTheAdmin came across SocialMarker.com which fills a void that many of you probably never knew existed. Many people (mostly digg users) will tell you social networks are not for submitting your blog articles... They are for other people to submit and vote on. Yeah right! And what world do you live in? Sure that's how it works for the 30,000 hits-a-day blog but how about the little guy? Everyone has to start somewhere right? For the new blogger, search engines just don't seem to cut it. The big guys seem to get all the exposure, and each new writer has a David and Goliath situation. The time frame is also off. If your trying to write about fresh, timely issues, waiting around for a Google spider to crawl your site and then hope to appear on the umptienth page on a specific search word - I gotta be honest with you, it was feasible 15 years ago when the net wasn't saturated with just about, well, EVERYTHING!Enter SocialMarker, stage left. SocialMarker allows you to not only submit ...

How can I ANNOY the hell out of someone in my office legally?
2007-10-01 18:00:00
We got this letter this morning from Jill in No-wheresville."Alright let me start out by saying there is this woman who works in my office, who is SUPER annoying. She annoys everyone around her. She has her own office but comes over to "Visit" with everyone spreading the urgency to kill her. Now I don't want to resort to violence is there a Techie way I can annoy her?"We have something that sounds like it might be what you need. For $10 this will be hours and hours of fun loving entertainment / revenge We found this over @ thinkGeek:The ThinkGeek Anno y-a-tron would be useless against an army of Snowbots, but it's very effective at disturbing that guy in the sales department or your "friend" down the hall. With its thin design and embedded magnet for easy hiding, the Annoy-a-tron can be placed in a variety of locations. Select one of the three sound choices (2 kHz, 12 kHz, or alternating) and push the switch to the on position. Place it in a proper hiding spot and let the "fun" beg...

Nero 8 Pre Release Review - Verdict AWESOME! You heard it here first!
2007-09-30 05:23:00
Win a free copy of Nero 8 HereWe met the good guys over @ Nero during Digital Life and they hooked us up with a copy of the soon to be released Nero 8.After playing with it for a bit and letting it handle my daily burning shenanigans - All I have to say is me likey! They have some nice new features but, the one thing I noticed right off the bat is the app has a smaller memory footprint and just seems to work a lot smoother. Load times were cut in HALF! Nero 8 gives Vista a disc copy gadget that fills the gap Microsoft seems to have left out. Not too shabby...Among the features we tried out were... burning a CD, DVD, HD-DVD (Sadly we dont have a BluRay drive to give that a go). After reading through the press kit it spoke of some magic software that will revive disks I thought to be dead back from the err, dead. I brought out some old data dvds that were scratched up something fierce. There was porn data that couldn't be recovered or restored from anywhere. We fired up Nero Rescue A...

Why am I getting Winmail.dat files on my mac from Windows users?
2007-09-29 07:20:00
Jodi writes in: I wasn't sure who I should contact about this, so i am sending this to you. As of late, word attachments coming from my friend on a Windows XP Machine appear as "winmail.dat" files. When I try to open these, the text runs about 150pp long, (it's a 4page doc) and the text looks like this: Xt="‡$.It shows garbage like that over and over again. Admin Can you help me open them? If I forward the message on to a windows user it is fine! What gives?Jodi have been dealing with this one for a while and there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when they appear and when they don't appear. We investigated the possibility of drag and drop causing it - but that wasn't it consistently. But we found a utility called TNEF's Enough for our Mac friends here:http://www.joshjacob.com/macdev/tnef /. You can simply drag winmail.dat into this application and BAM! How can I combine 3 partitions into one during a windows reinstall?
2007-09-28 21:15:00
Ted writes in:I have 2 physical drives drive 1 has a c: drive, a d: drive and a e: drive which is bootable. The second drive has a f: drive that i use for storage. My machine needs to be reinstalled with Windows . Before I do that how can i merge the 3 partitions on drive 1. ( I don't care if I have to reformat) I backed up everything to drive 2 Hey Ted - This one is easy as pie. (Actually I don't know how easy pie is - lets say its easy as ummm... Its Just Real Easy!) Just start the machine up with the Windows CD in the drive and boot to it. Start the installation and when it shows you the partitions for drive one - you should see all your partitions. Delete the three of them and create one single partition and let it do its thing. You might want to disconnect the second drive while you do it to be on the safe side. That way you can't format the 2nd drive even if you try! Sometimes its better to be pro-active then to curse @ yourself later!_TheAdmiN_Check out our RSS feed. Nee...

Gateway takes its try at purty machines with the ONE.
2007-09-28 17:55:00
I entered the world of technological goodness yesterday afternoon as I walked into the Javits Center in Manhattan for Digital Life 2007. This show is MASSIVE! I only had a little while to do a quick run through with the rest of the press and media guys. I noticed that their is a HUGE presence by all the consumer PC brands like Dell, HP and Gateway and they all look like they are trying to be the next big thing... Again. Gateway might have itself a hit with its new "One" desktop machine that resembles an iMac. This machine is really attractive and could find its way into the most luxurious households and not be out of place. Remarkably HP pulled the power supply out of this machine and went the way of the gaming systems and created a power brick. HP is just the next in line of toting these all in one designs, as IBM and Gateway have already touched on this market. The main difference is LOOKS! Apple might not be the only one with good looking machines anymore - Will the other big na...

Symphony of Office Destruction
2007-09-28 17:11:00
IBM/Lotus has fired a shot across the bow of MS at their flagship Office .I give you Lotus Symphony !Totally free and easy to download @ 136MB for the file.Symphony is based on OpenOffice.org and the Eclipse framework and is meant not only to give consumers and businesses an alternative to Microsoft Office, but also to promote the use of ODF (Open Document for XML), an XML-based standard for documents approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). "The end goal here is the proliferation of the open standard," Rhodin said.Microsoft Office 2007, which has more than 90 percent market share, does not natively support ODF and instead uses the company's OOXML (Open XML) format, which failed to pass a recent ISO vote for standardization. And for the record, IBM/Lotus has had 100,000 downloads of the product in its first week of availability.I have downloaded it and gave it a mild test run this morning. It is quicker to open than other distros of Open Office and a lot ...

A First Look at Digital Life...
2007-09-28 05:59:00
Hello Ladies and Gents,I decided to take a quick break from compiling LOTS of intel gathered today at the Digital Life Press-only preview at the Javits Center. Basically I didn't want to leave any of our faithful readers, who have come to expect AskTheAdmin to be on the cutting blade-edge of technology, hanging. As we've mentioned before, we have visitors as well as admins from all over the world checking us out. So I want to make sure our beloved viewers who aren't able to get down to NYC are in the timely loop of things. Onward and upward...As I walked into the Javits the first thing that struck my fancy was the Nokia-fied Ford Mustang with some very stylish exterior accoutrements. This car was packed to the hilt (tastefully) with some of the newest pro audio out. But the most impressive thing about this blazing Ford 'Stang was the fact that Nokia has retro-fitted this car to 'mind-meld', so to speak, with some very cool Nokia Mobile media devices.(see pics). I was pleasantly...

How can I backup the information I cant see before formatting A Windows Box
2007-09-27 10:20:00
Every time a machine gets put in front of me that needs to be formatted I first have to backup all the user's personal data. I can't see their passwords for their IM or Email accounts - So how can I retrieve it? We have covered programs that reveal the password behind the Asterisks before but this goes much further. Check out what we can backup with this method:Documents/Pictures/Music CollectionsMail Settings (Accounts, Passwords, Address Book etc.Dialup & VPN Setting.Messengers AccountsWindows & Applications License Keys.and more.... more...Data such as Documents and Media files are simple to backup. But how can I know what's behind those asterisks to save their passwords? You ask how can I collect all those licenses and other hidden data ???? And how can we do it FAST and efficient? Well, the solution comes from a great site for small and useful freeware utilities called NirSoft. The site includes many utilities that reveals your precious information. It's like the mi...

2007-09-27 06:18:00
My wife got me the new HTC Device Dubbed the Cavalier with a Dopod Branding and imported it from China for my birthday - NOW THATS LOVE!I have had this bad boy for almost 3 weeks now and it's just about time for my in depth review. First of all I love this phone in all its 3.5g Glory. Everything I didn't like about my Dash has been improved upon (almost). I am going to run down a list of what I really like and then follow it up with its weaknesses. Check back later in the week for applications, hacks and configuration settings...The Good:HSDPA is Super fast and I have seen up to 965kbps in Manhattan.3g Is still faster than Edge or Gprs - I have seen up to 93kbps.Tethering a laptop to my Dopod is super fast. The processor is double that of the Dash @ 400mhz. This might not seem like a big deal to you mister 3ghz desktop... but trust me this is like the jump from 56k to Broadband. This smart phone is really smart - it does cut and paste out the box.2mp Camera.Windows Mobile Standard 6...

Is there a free way to edit PDFs? How about a program to open PDF's quicker
2007-09-26 17:40:00
My co-worker Todd just put me on! I used to hate opening PDF files because they bog my system down as they are opening and I just never really took to them. Now there is a program called FOXIT that replaces Adobe's PDF reader and it is SUPER FAST! It has add-ons that also allows you to edit and convert documents to pdf - I mean how much more can you want! Best of all it is FREE! (The reader is free but looks like they charge for the add-ons including editing) They have add on packs that do spell check, auto form filler and the such for a small fee.Foxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer and printer, with incredible small size (only 2.1 M download size), breezing-fast launch speed and amazingly rich feature set. Foxit Reader supports Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003/Vista. Its core function is compatible with PDF Standard 1.7. In the past, you have to download a huge PDF reader from 'another' software company, go through a lengthy installation process and wait for an annoying splas...

What is an OPML file and where can I find one?
2007-09-26 16:26:00
Chances are if you are asking this question you are installing a RSS reader. No we are not clairvoyant we just know...you know?An OPML file can be used for several things but the most common is a formatted list of your rss feeds that can be used to import and export them from/to your favorite reader. This file can also be used to migrate from one program to another or to sample someone elses tastes...For example here is a Sample OPML file with a handful of tech feeds. Try her out, give it a whirl...I have not found a central repository to sample other peoples feed lists. Technology Weeks Kickoff PreParty Roundup
2007-09-26 13:27:00
Commodore and I trekked over to Splashlight after work last night to check out the NYC Technology Week Start off. We got our press badges and hit the bar. There were a few exhibits and some attempts at speeches. Now you tell me - put a bunch of tech loving geeks in a room with toys and then attempt to give speeches - HA! The guy from Trend Micro seemed to be getting pretty pissed that no one was paying attention, It seems everyone was busy rocking out to Guitar Hero and getting drunk. We heard from Paul Cosgrave, New York Technology Commissioner, on his 311 system and NYC TV.The room was divided up into cliques. We saw a Gizmodo writer in one corner, a group of tech crunch guys in another and so on and so on. It was like the first day of school all over again and I had some mingling to do. I tried to strike up conversations with everyone. As you know The Admin is a friendly guy...We made our way over to the Ford Sync with Microsoft's voice activated system on board. With Evan Blass ...

Interview with Monica Vila on Digital Life 2007
2007-09-25 20:09:00
As we are getting hyped for the kick off of Digital Week in NYC we scored an interview with Monica Vila. She is the Vice President of Consumer Marketing for Ziff Davis (That's the company that brings you DigitalLife in all its geeky glory!). She got all of your questions, about DigitalLife, answered below along with some of ours! She also put some of our geeky concerns to rest :). The question most of you sent in about the badges and RFID concerns were laid to bed as well. Check it out:ATA: We hear that Digital Life brought in over 52,000 people last year. Do you think this year will be a bigger draw? DL: We certainly hope so! And we are certainly ready for more; this year is without a doubt, our best year yet. Now in our 4th year, we’ve become an event that consumers look forward to, and companies fold into their marketing calendars, as an important event to participate in. More and more companies are using DigitalLife as their venue for making their big product announcements...

So Apple casually announces modified iPhones might get bricked in the next update. And for those of you who don't know Bricking = Bad! Bricking a device is in essence making that shiny uber device into a fancy paper weight or BRICK...Apples says that any running of 3rd party applications voids your warranty. Sound familiar? Yup we called it over here @ AtA - There is going to be another Sony PSP style war heating up. Now lets remember what the Sony fanboys did when threatened with something similar? They created custom firmware for their beloved device and I have been... I mean they have been running it since inception. All the good stuff from home brew and access to all the legit fanyboy goodness. So have some questions Who's working on it? All that money spent to unlock the shiny iPhone how much is it worth to customize it? Where's that guy dark alex who has been keeping up with Sony?Anyone got a iPhone dump? iPhone dev wiki dudes? Vista Tip: Can I copy a file or folders path instead of the file itself?
2007-09-25 13:11:00
Have you ever brought up a Open dialog and thought to yourself -Why can't I copy the path of a file/folder directly from explorer? The Microsoft boys heard ya because here it is on your context menu!It doesn't work in XP but… now it is an option, in Windows Vista .What you need to do is hold down the shift key, while right-clicking the file or folder...Choose the Copy as Path from the menu. Here is whats on the clipboard after clicking copy as path:"C:UsersPublicPicturesSample PicturesCreek.jpg"Note: This will also allow you to copy the path of a folder to the clipboard. This becomes VERY handy in grabbing a long path and definitely can save you a few clicks. Anyone have a way to add this functionality to XP?_TheAdmiN_Check out our RSS feed. Need Free Tech Support? What should I use for a mobile RSS reader on my WM device?
2007-09-24 18:59:00
This post should start by informing you that I consider myself an RSS addict. I need my information and it doesn't matter if I am mobile or in front of a computer... I need to be connected.I have been using RSS on my mobile phone for along time now. It seems like I have tried every different mobile RSS reader out there. They all claim to be the best of the best and of course better than the competition. After many trials and tribulations I have narrowed this list down to one application that seems to work on all mobile platforms. I don't know about you but most of my friends use it as well. Is this because I push the product? No they see me using it and ask me about it. I haven't had anyone that inquired about it not wind up using it. There are a few different versions that seem to cover ALL the mobile platforms. The application is Egress, this is a small lightweight application that does almost everything I want it to do. Egress allows for import and export of an OPML file (Dont ...

Is there a way to Change the Pre-Login Background in Windows?
2007-09-24 18:34:00
I hate the default colors in Windows XP. Don't get me wrong, blue is a fantastic color, and I certainly don't want to offend anyone whose favorite color is blue. I just like to be different.Chan g ing the default color is pretty easy though. All it takes is a few changes in the registry. Of course to do that you need to be a local administrator. If you aren't a local administrator, there are ways of becoming one. The quickest way to figure out if you are a local administrator or not is to right-click on the start button. If you see "Explore All Users" as a menu option, you are an administrator. If you don't, well...you aren't a local administrator. For the sake of argument, and to move along with this article, lets say you are a local administrator. Click on Start > Run and type in regedit then click OK.Before we go any further, I should probably CMA by saying that changes to the registry can seriously screw up your computer if you don't know what you are doing. Pay careful atten...

Stop Windows From Nagging You To Reboot After Automatic Updates!
2007-09-23 13:35:00
We've all seen it, and we are all annoyed by it. We are particularly annoyed when we have 20 windows open and are multitasking like monkeys in a banana tree (that doesn't make any sense does it?). Anyway, that annoying prompt can be turned off with a little thing called Group policy. The cool thing about group policy is you can apply it to one machine using local a local policy, or many machines at once through an OU in active directory. Either way, it is setup the same. From the Run line type gpedit.msc then click OK. Select local computer policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Re-prompt for Restart with Scheduled Installations.Check the box that says enabled, and set the time interval between prompts in minutes. If you want to not be bothered by the prompt at all, check the box that says disabled.
