2007-09-22 14:16:00
Is Googl e going to lay fiber across the Pacific Ocean joining America and southeast Asia ? Ads for hiring a Submarine cable negotiator to work for Google might just make this a reality. Here is some information... Let you Speculations run wild. We found the following article from several sources the most reliable being Engadget and an identical article hereEarlier this year, we got wind of plans to construct a 12,428-mile fiber link between the west coast of America and Southeast Asia, and now it seems that Google may be "planning a multi-terabit undersea communications cable across the Pacific Ocean for launch in 2009."According to Communications Day, the so-called Unity cable "has been under development for several months," but Google would neither confirm nor deny the plans when questioned. Interestingly, the article points to a Google job listing for a "submarine cable negotiator," and when asked about it, the firm simply stated that "it should come as no surprise that Google is ...

Can I save and view an online flash file? Bonus NEW Family Guy Video and ho
2007-09-21 15:39:00
A bunch of our readers happen to be big fans of the Gizmodo's Jason Chen AND happen to be HUGE Family Guy fans... Go figure Right? Well Jason was bashing Family Guy this morning but put up an AWESOME clear clip of Lois and a pseudo Cleavland R2D2 with a bit of a tech support issue.(If that doesn't give you your fix here is a link to 10 full minutes of it in low quality).Hmmm... The video is embedded flash.... Now if I wanted to save that, what the hell would I do? As you can see by the clip below we did not have much of a problem snatching it up for our selves. In FireFox I hit up Tools --- Page Info -- Media and scroll through the list and find the media file. No SWF files? Ah there is one but it is just a player. So how the hell are we going to find the file then? The power of the search.I scanned my machine for all new files in the last 10 minutes and found the file in my temporary Internet files. it was called New_Family_Guy_import_video_file.flv. As you can see in this case...

2007-09-14 06:42:00
I had someone ask me to get them a second copy of office 2003 for their shiny new laptop. Seeming I bought both the machines and the software I knew the machine was already loaded up and good to go. I mean come on would I give them a machine just so they can come back to see me as soon as they had to open a word document? They proceeded to hand me a credit card. I smirked and said nah - this one is on me. He looked confused so I fessed up. Microsoft allows you to install retail boxed versions and even some oem software in a desktop and another portable device if you are going to be the PRIMARY user of the software. So boo-yah an EULA... (That's End User License Agreement for those not in the know)... finally works in the little guys favor! You too can check your M$ software by going to help about and hitting the View EULA... Its a link near the bottom of the box. Look I'll wait.Installation and use. You may: (a) install and use a copy of the Software on one personal computer ...

True Tales Of End User Stupidity! Worth a Laugh!
2007-09-14 03:49:00
So you hear tech support stories and say to yourself... Yeah right, that's pretty funny but, I doubt it really happened.Well, I bring you The True Tales Of End User Stupidity (t cubed o.e.u.s. - pretty catchy eh?) that will have you peeing in your pants or bring a tear to your eye if you cant stand to see gadgets destroyed. Maybe its not as good as the drink holder aka CD-Rom crushing someones favorite can of soda but its real... A middle manager chick, whose office we support, has been talking about the new Moto Q Pro and how she just HAS to have it. She finally shut up about it and copped it - We spoke with her and she said she wanted it when it originally came out but everyone told her to hold off "Until they beefed it up and added all the features," - her exact words...I set it up, fed in the exchange info, tested it and asked her:"Do you need me to show you how to use it.""No. What do i look like?", Was the witty response I got back. (sense a little sarcasm?) Some other stuff ...

Whatcha know About the Dopod? Thats 3.5G HSDPA BITCHES!
2007-09-13 15:57:00
I just unboxed my brand new Dopod HTC aka HTC Cavalier S630 and after a few tweaks my demo was FLYING on HSDPA ATT's Network. I did a quick post on the Dash's big brother a while back and it still isn't released in the US of A. Yup this baby came right from China right down to the Chinese interface. But thanks HTC for including English in your ROM!I found my old Cingular .cab file for my settings which worked instantly -DOPE! Right then I noticed My old E or G was replaced with a 3G... Then I enabled HSDPA and BOOM it turned into a H! We have achieved 3.5G boyz! And all I can say is that this coupled with the 400mhz processor... Is that I love it. What a huge jump. Almost as big as when I went from my 300 baud modem to my 2400 baud modem. Ahh Good times Good Times. Stay tuned for a full review. This is the near future of mobile devices... Is there a free customizable remote support option? How about UltraVnc SC?
2007-09-13 13:07:00
So you get the call... "Hello Karl? My, um, computer doesn't work. I think I broke the Internet. Can You Help? I can't open any of my porn pretty pictures!"Well first I have them check the Internet connection by trying to go to Google.com or CNN.com. If they have Net we are good to go to fix that end user right on up. We will be using Ultra VNC Single Click. It is free and super easy to use for any Internet user - actuallly, any user that can click a link followed by ok!It takes a little configuration and customization (if you want) but once it is up and running, you leave the viewer running on your machine and whenever someone runs your exe file or clicks your hyperlink you get a message on your screen that someone wants your help. It displays their username, machine name, OS version, SP and IP address. All of that is usually painful to extract from your client (relative or random dirt bag). Now lets get you all set up to be a regular remote assistance wiz...What your Gonna Need:2...

Autopatcher is Down! I Repeat! Autopatcher is Down!
2007-09-13 02:50:00
We are working on a project in my Capstone class at school. In this project we have to create a Windows 2000 Active Directory Network. It's pretty straight forward.Well, when doing the updates I decided I would use Autopatcher to make patching all of the hosts a cinch. I didn't take into account one thing.... Micro$oft is friggin' EVIL!Microshaft sent the Autopatcher team a cease and desist notice via email telling them to take down the download page on the August 29th. That includes all mirrors and FTP sites as well. The good news is that the team said they would start working on a web-based version of Autopatcher, so we should see that in the not-so-distant future if everything works out well.In the meantime, Windiz Updates is still available as an alternative to Microsoft Update.Originally Posted on Bauer-Power By El Di PabloCheck out our RSS feed. Free Remote Support Software
2007-09-12 21:44:00
At my first I.T. gig, we had users in the field all of the time. remote sales folks, and also remote service agents which required them to travel an awful lot. They worked out of their homes, airports, Starbucks, and hotels. Though they weren't on our network, they still needed support.Among other tools for remote support, we would use WebEx which costs a lot of dough, and in my opinion really, really sucks! The delay on it is ridiculous, and the picture quality is second only to the drawings of my 2 year old daughter. (Okay, maybe not that bad, but you get my point).Anyhoo, my buddy at work showed me a cool website that offers a free, open source remote support tool that uses VNC over SSH. The SSH server is hosted by ShowMyPC.com, but the software also gives you an option to use your own SSH server if you have one.Another cool feature is that for each session, the person that needs support generates a random password and gives it to the person they want to share their PC with, so ...

Why cant I print in Windows Xp? No Printers are Showing Up!!
2007-09-12 13:01:00
All of the sudden, XP will not communicate with the printer. Or any printer for that matter! I can see that there are a bunch of print jobs in the queue. When I try to cancel the print jobs, nothing happens. I'm stuck and need to print. HELP!OK lets not freak out and pull an office space...It looks like your print spooler crashed out. This can happen for a variety of reasons. Corrupted print job and software crash are among some of the possible reasons. Most of the time this can be resolved by restarting the print spooler service. This will clear out your Queue and reconnect you to the printer. I always physically restart the printer if possible and then follow these steps:Start and stop the print spooler by following these steps:Open Computer Management. In the details pane, double-click Print Spooler.Do one of the following depending on the task you want to do:Click Stop to stop the service.Click Start to start the service. This should have you back up and printing in no time. Definition of the Day: NAT and Public vs. Private IP addresses
2007-09-11 22:20:00
So a lot of my end users don't know what N.A.T. is . And if you haven't guessed it - it's not what is pictured on the left! Most end users have no idea what the difference is between their external and internal IP addresses or Public vs. Private . Chances are they will never know unless they try to connect to their desktop remotely and even than FAT CHANCE. They will come and ask you to set it up for them! Isn't that what an Admin is for? (...Mutters RTFM under breath...)I get calls rather frequently since we started letting key users use MSTSC to connect to a RDP session. In fancy terms they open a Remote Desktop Connection and work as if they were in front of their machine. Your external IP comes in handy when you are using MSTSC, PCANYWHERE, VNC or other similar products.I have seen it all from the user going to http://www.whatsmyip.com/ and trying that to a user trying to change their local ip to "Something They Can Remember" LOL! It was set to 1.1.1.2. Do Not Do This. I Repe...

How To: Run ASP code and display results on a Blogger/Blogspot page!
2007-09-11 06:09:00
Hey folks,Here at Ask The Admin we are very satisfied with our Blogger /Blogspot interface. It's streamlined, easy to use, fast, and is constantly buzzing with new features out of Google's Dev sector. However people such as myself, who are always into adding those extra spices into a site development project, are searching for ways to add various number-crunching, letter-parsing features. This could include anything from displaying the last 5 comments to a Blogger blog, such as we have on our info-bar to the right, to displaying a random quote, such as the one you see at the top of this blog under the title graphic-bar thingy. These features require data integration, even at it's simplest form (the random quote uses 1 table with a few columns in a MySQL database running on a different server). This would require a host with, at least, a DB server, such as MySQL, and a server side scripting engine, such as Microsoft IIS with ASP, or Apache with PHP. I've seen evidence that, in the ...

Quick Tip: Unlocking a Windows Workstation
2007-09-10 19:53:00
I get calls all of the time complaining that someone used their computer, forgot to log out and now the computer is locked. I thought this was common knowledge because when I was in the Navy, and we had 6 computers to share between a crew of 500, people would always forget to log out. The thing about common knowledge is that it really isn't common. When people call me, there are two things that can be done. One is to remote into that machine, and use my administrator account to unlock the computer for them. The second can be done by the user who wants to login that computer without even having to call me. What they can do is simply reboot the computer. They can do this by holding the power button down for about thirty seconds until the computer powers down. After it is powered down, they can wait another 30 seconds, then turn it back on. When Windows boots up, the computer will be unlocked. You have to be careful about doing this with older versions of Windows because they tend to get...

Can You Update Ubuntu...By CD?
2007-09-10 16:39:00
If you have ever installed a fresh new copy of Ubuntu , you have gone through a ton of updates. It is almost as bad as Windows in that respect. If you have to update numerous computers at once, it can also suck up all of your bandwidth. There is another way though. What if I told you that you could back up all of your updates from one computer to CD or DVD (Your choice) and then update all of your other Ubuntu machines at once without having to go out to the repositories and suck up your bandwidth? You would probably say, "El Di Pablo, you're crazy bro!" That may be true, but it can be done. With a little application called APTonCD, you can update one computer, then backup all of those many updates you downloaded to a CD or DVD, then turn around and update all of the rest of your Ubuntu machines with the CD or DVD. Those machines don't even need to be connected to the internet! For installation, and usage, read the full article here!Originally Posted on Bauer-Power By El Di PabloCheck...

How can you monitor the overall status and health of your network?
2007-09-10 14:04:00
So you've just finished rolling out 500 new desktops using disk imaging, and you're keeping them updated using WSUS. How are you going to monitor the overall status and health of your network? There is a wealth of excellent network monitoring software available, both commercial and open source. One problem with many of them is that they are really geared towards the very large network. Monitor ing 1000 servers, 300 switches, 100 routers and 15 firewalls on 3 continents is very different from monitoring 10 servers, 2 switches, 1 router and 1 firewall in a single office. Commercial monitoring software is probably going to be prohibitively expensive for a small network.JFFNMS (Just For Fun Network Management System) is an excellent open source network monitoring package you can run on any spare Windows or Linux server. Don't let the name fool you, it is a full-featured piece of software which includes autodiscovery, fully configurable alerts, performance graphing, reporting and networ...

Bloglines Beta Review + AtA asks Bloglines some Questions...
2007-09-09 02:31:00
We have been using the web based version of Bloglines for some time now. It is our favorite RSS reader for a bunch of reasons - no installation, saved searches, but namely speed. Our only gripes were lack of a specific view (3 paned) and the absence of a social network twist. Ask.com acquired Bloglines a little whiles back and it stood stagnate for some time. So when we heard about the new Bloglines Beta we were excited to say the least. 3 paned viewing was one of the thing we were hoping for and here it is...We have been playing with the new Beta for a few weeks now and we are loving on it. The customizable home page is sweet. The new look and feel is slick and comfortable. The drag and drop Ajax functionality is nice and we jumped right in and didn't look back. This is just the first phase in a complete make over of the site. The best part is even with all of these enhancements they have retained all their speed. I'm a scared, how 'bout you?
2007-09-07 18:41:00
I don't know about you guys, but reading this has scared the living daylights out of this IT admin....I know this is my blog, but I'd like to ask for your thoughts on the topic. Rumors are swirling that Microsoft may buy Research In Motion, RIM, maker of the Blackberry. Personally I think this is a bad idea on a lot of levels. It's the classic situation of an answer looking for a problem. With Exchange 2007 and Windows Mobile 6, Microsoft basically gives away for free everything RIM charges for with a BES server and services. You can argue you like/don't like Windows Mobile, but that wouldn't change with an acquisition of RIM. The only benefit I see to this deal is Microsoft speeding up the inevitable, the death and assimilation of the blackberry nation. In the words of Linda Richman and Coffee Talk, "Talk amongst yourselves". -AlexFrom this linkThis better not happen. If it does, you know damned well that MS will destroy the Blackberry and everything that is good about it, an...

2007-09-07 15:00:00
How many times have you been asked online to provide your personal information, such as your name, number and e-mail address? If you are like me, thousands of times, almost everyday. Each time you do it too, you have this aching feeling in your stomach, because you know you are about to get about a thousand spam e-mails now.So, what are you supposed to do? Give them a fake e-mail address? Perhaps, but what if they require verification. You know, they send you an e-mail and you have to open it up and click on some link. What are you supposed to do then?I'll tell you what I do, I go to a little website called 10 Minute Mail . The name says it all, they give you an e-mail address that is literally only good for 10 minutes. If you need additional time, there is a link that resets the timer. After the time is up, the e-mail address self destructs. No muss, no fuss, and more importantly, no spam! This service is absolutely free. However, if you decide to use it, they ask for a small donati...

Spybot 1.5.1 Released!
2007-09-04 16:52:00
When people ask me what they need for basic security on their home computers, I usually tell them they need three things:1) A good, updated antivirus program2) A good personal firewall program3) An anti-spyware programMost people are good on number one or two, because that is what the media beats down your throat, but most people don't think of spyware as a problem. People just go through life, closing pop-ups, and ignoring the extra tool bars they find in Internet Explorer and wonder why their computers are so slow.Wikipedia defines spyware as: "... computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent."Well, doesn't that sound like a cozy idea? I didn't think so. I blogged about different anti-spyware programs before. In that post I mentioned Spybot Search and Destroy as one of my favorite FREE anti-spyware utilities. Why am I writing ab...
