Recover your Windows Account Passwords!
2007-09-03 14:20:00
Great open-source utility to recover lost Windows account passwords or to break into a locked machine. In some cases, you can use special tools that reset your forgotten password (which I'll write about in my up-coming posts..). but there are cases, where you don't want to risk harming the system even more, or where you must know the original password- especially if your NTFS file-system is encrypted using EFS. Another case could be where you have a local-profile of a user and you want to be able to log in to it to recover specific settings of the user. For all those cases you can use this tool called: ophcrackthese are actually a bunch of tools that can be installed on Linux, Windows & Mac. but I want to focus on the Live CD version of the application. the ophcrack team has compiled a complete all-in-one Linux boot CD that automatically loads the tool and starts the cracking process.- No installation necessary- No admin password necessary - All you need is the ability to boot fro...

Are Laptops A Distraction In School?
2007-09-03 06:08:00
Class is in session, which means more work for me. Whenever it comes to getting my classwork done, and taking notes, my computer is an indefensible tool. I tend to have my laptop everywhere I go, and when I am in class taking notes, I have found nothing better than OpenOffice for note taking. It is free as opposed to certain commercial competitors, and it runs on nearly every modern operating system. There are a few issues, and they aren't exactly technical problems. Whenever I can pickup the school's WiFi signal, I sometimes get too distracted talking to my friends on Pidgin (open source instant messenger, like Trillian), and surfing the web, notably Facebook. When it comes down to it, I am not sure if my laptop is more of a help or a hindrance as I am constantly distracted. That's why I usually end up turning off of my wireless card, and proceeding into my class.Whatever the case, the computer is a good thing to have if you don't have the attention span of a monkey. Between all...

Whats this I hear about a Google OS? Yep its true..
2007-09-03 03:41:00
Its been announced that Googl e has another project, Google OS! The good thing about this is that its based around Ubuntu! What could this mean to the whole Linux movement? Plenty! More hardware/software compatibility..More cross-platform compatibility..Sky rocket the market share of the Linux desktop..Possible PC vendor partnerships to pre-install Google OS.Give the major software vendors a push to rethink releasing their products upon the Linux platform. Make Linux an option for everyone! Canonical, the business arm of Ubuntu has really managed to put Linux on the landscape, so can you imagine what Google can do for them? Are you excited? I am - like a 16 year old school girl! ..Giggles and Blushes.. I feel Microsoft has plagued the desktop market way to long. Maybe Microsoft will move away from the OS game and concentrate on their neat-o ideas like Surface. Either way it's time for a change. Time for some damn fresh air. I really think now is the time for Google OS.Check out ...

2007-09-02 00:29:00
I heard the phone ring... It's the wee hours of the morning. I normally turn off my cell phone but I got home late and it was still in my pants crumbled in the bathroom. I get out of bed walk towards the phone - I grab it and walk towards the balcony. I need to take the call without waking up my pregnant wife.It was the president of this company I was doing some consulting for. I did a double take - that was his number on the caller id. I had met him once during my initial interview and he just signed the checks after that. He sounded frantic and told me he had a laptop with him in Chicago and he needed to have some software installed so he found a "local techie" to install it for him. They managed to sabotage the laptop so it would only come up to a log in screen. He described what was going on.You log in get an error box with no writing and a big red X. Your only options are click ok or cancel and either way you get...Logging Off...He told me that they want $500 to get it back up...

How Can I Clean Some Of The Junk Off My PC - Safely?
2007-09-01 22:20:00
No matter how big your hard drive is, it will always get to the point where you need to make some more room for something else. On today's post I will go over a few great tools to cleanup programs and other junk files from your computer.1. PC Decrapifier - Automatically remove all those pre-installed 30-day trial software that you get on your new branded pc/laptop. this great utility recognizes all those bits and small changes that turns your branded pre-installed Windows into a irritating software junk-yard that takes a long time to remove manually.2. My Uninstaller - This small and useful utility is one of my favorites. it is just a replacement to the old Control Panel's Add/Remove Software applet. it loads the list much quicker then the original, and the best is- you can run multiple uninstallations at the same time (you are only limited to one uninstaller when removing a Windows Installer package, due to MS's engine limitation). use it also to remove obsolete records of softw...

Google Analytics Quick Tip - How to see (some) hourly information in Google
2007-09-01 19:52:00
Hey Boys and Girls, Quick tip for those of you who are a little peeved at Google for disabling their older interface, which allowed much more extensive hourly views into visitor behavior. So far, the only thing I've found in the new interface which allows for some hourly analytical goodness is under the Visitors Tab, followed by Visitor Trending. Pretty much everything under the Visitor Trending allows for an hourly view EXCEPT Absolute Unique Visitors. That's it. Hourly reporting is definitely in the works over at Google Labs, and I'm sure they are working on some more hourly reporting tools as we speak. In the meantime this will give you access to some hourly info, which might give you some insight as to what your visitors are thinking. What I'd really love to see is some real-time action from Google's Analytics Tool.Check out our RSS feed. Need Free Tech Support? Ask The Admin a Question

2007-09-01 12:59:00
We read about Googles free 411 service 1.800.goog.411. And its great as we have been using it for some time now. Microsft + Ford VS Apple + VW?? WTF? Will your next car be a PC or a Mac?
2007-08-31 16:50:00
I wasn't going to do it. Yeah I'm talking about the iCar. Wasn't gonna do it, didn't want to do it but, due to multiple requests for information and a new Microsoft vs. Apple battle...Here comes the NEW controversy: Is your next car gonna be a Mac or a PC? Microsoft + Ford vs. Volkswagen + Apple. Ding, ding, ding...In this corner Microsoft got the voice command down pat and their product is real. Meaning it isn't vaporware and you can get it in an actual car! Plus its name is not Ford XP or MS Ford 08. It is just a Ford with Microsoft Enhancements. Are you listening to us Apple and Volkswagen? The whole Iconcept was cool 10 years ago... No wait it wasn't. Technology and a car should not only be seamless it should have that wow factor. Now we are going to get back to demoing our new on-board computer friend out. We have named him KITT. I hope it doesn't turn evil and start text messaging our ex-girlfriends @ 3 in the morning. No really, it does voice to pre-set text messages, s...
Kick-ass Firefox extensions save you time and money
2007-08-31 15:28:00
There are two things we hate over @ AtA : Registering for a website JUST to SEE content. That is just evil - sure you get your membership numbers up but, we HATE you. We hate you we hate you we hate you. Did I say we hate you? Especially sites like the New York Time s that we need to use so very often. Most of you have heard of the website http://www.BugMeNot.com that provides free community user names and passwords for sites. This made life moderately easier but I still had to go to their website and look up the security information. That is where this Firefox extension comes into play... if there is a user name and password for the site you are on and you right click on the text fields - BugMeNot the FireFox plug in offers instant gratification... That sounds perverted huh? Um how about Instant Population of the fields. But wait, you say that's just one thing Admin! Oh yeah the other thing we hate (actually there are quite a few other things we hate, come to think of it) is looki...

Can you run Windows Restore from the Command Line?
2007-08-30 18:59:00
Our Buddy over @ Bauer-Power had an exciting time running system restore from the command line. Check it out.I had a computer today that reacted a little funny to an install of McAfee Virus Scan. After the reboot it didn't agree with McAfee's OnAccess drivers. Long story short it would give me a BSOD at reboot. I tried Last Known Good, but then it would hang indefinitely. I tried to boot into safe mode (without networking), that was a no-go also, it too would just hang indefinitely. All I wanted to do was a simple system restore!!!Never fear, Captain Command line is here! I rebooted into safe mode with command prompt. It booted right up. I logged in and like clockwork, got only the command prompt. I ran the following command:%systemroot%system32 estore strui.exeThe system restore GUI popped up and I was able to restore to before the install. Thanks Captain Command line. We just learned from several readers who I guess actually read the user manual of their shinny new iPhones. We were pointed to a post on cr.eations.net. That post pointed out a fact that a lot of us missed when reading our manual. You didn't read the manual - hmmm neither did I. Seeming this popular uber gadget didn't ship with any flavor of 3G goodness lets help you guys to achieve - whopping 60+ kbps speeds... (Can you sense the sarcasm?)So check out this (We can't call it a hack) method of intended use on your iPhone. Lets call it the iPhone anti-hack. Go get your better download speeds and stop absorbing all those evil radio waves. Hmmm Better speeds and less radiation! What a concept. Thanks Cr.Eations.Net, Linda and Jason for the nfo. (By the way what do you guys think of our random quotes??)For me it's been quite obvious but I am surprised how many iPhone owners I see complaining about EDGE speeds when they're covering the antenna (that black plastic area on the back of ...

Light weight everything from FTP clients to A FULL Office Suite (oppen Office), IM programs, Anti-Virus. All the data is stored to the memory stick. It has a slick interface and its real easy to use. You want it they got it. I have been using it for a few weeks now and it really is a great resource. Just grab the free download run the executable and let it have its way with your memory stick. 2007-08-29 06:05:00
Good Evening Ladies and Gents,This just in from my lazy, insomniac news wire: The New Jersey kid who cracked the Iphone and set it free from it's AT&T bonds is definitely reaping the rewards of accomplishing a feat that happens to be the hottest thing on the newswires everywhere. Now normally hackers do stuff every day that can be considered a feat of logic and programming. Some coders write beautiful code that some would consider a work of art. And some coders decide slyly to crack something that happens to have it's own torrent of marketing, commercials, hype, glitz, glamour and utmost popularity in the ever-changing cellphone spotlight. As manufacturers clamor to make the next Razr, and now the Iphone, they sink billions of dollars into making sure these devices become household names. Enter Apple, who decides to create a phone that is completely closed source and gives no leeway for tapping into it's full capabilities as an information tool. So this is basically the equivalen...

Can you steal a car with just a laptop?
2007-08-28 15:18:00
We read a report yesterday from AutoBlogGreen that essentially said that the magic secret code inside the modern key fobs has been cracked allowing for a remote user with a laptop and an hour can potentially unlock and start your vehicle. Among the list was Nisan whos systems happen to be identical to Infiniti - So We gave it a try on our FX35... Here is the original article followed by our experiences. Here at AutoblogGreen, we just love the fuel-efficient Prius. We love it so much, we almost want to break into every one we see and drive them away. The Prius has a pretty good anti-theft system... and stealing cars is not legal. The Supreme Court has not yet legalized theft but the code for opening the Prius has been broken. One down, one to go.Research groups are claiming they cracked Keeloq, the security system used in key fobs by Toyota as well as GM, VW, Fiat, Chrysler, Daewoo, Honda, Jaguar, and Volvo. Seems some things were leaked to a Russian hacking website allowing the resea...

Micro$oft Update Alternatives + Top Ten Reasons NOT to use Windows Update!
2007-08-20 19:01:00
How many of you out there are not fond of the Micro soft Update site? I am sure there are many of you. How many of you are fed up with the Genuine Advantage nonsense every time you want to make sure you are up to date? Not to mention if you have a "legally questionable" Windows or Office installation. Don't fret, there are other methods for getting your updates so you can stay patched up. I will talk about two of my favorites. The first one I like is called Autopatcher. Every few months they create a core distribution, almost like a service pack, which contains all previous patches. Then every month they come out with a big update that you install to keep your system patched up. Autopatcher is really nice if you don't like to reboot. How many times have you built a new machine and installed Windows from scratch, then tried to patch it up? You have to reboot about 3 or 4 times before everything is patched up! With Autopatcher, everything patches at once, and you only have to reboot o...

Is printing documents from your mobile device somewhat of an adventure? You have to get to a meeting and your doc is sitting on your handheld. The copies weren't printed and sent over by your Secretary - What do you do? There are plenty of work-a-rounds and hacks but nothing definitive to allow you Mr. Mobile to print directly from your mobile device to ANY printer ANYWHERE. Well I guess not any printer... OH and I guess its not Anywhere either.Hmm so what is so revolutionary about it? It seems HP hosts your documents and will send you a SMS code that allows them to be printed to "Local Print ers"? Does that seem strange? Will that be Kinkos and Staples or Misses Johnson down the hall with the neat-o color printer? HP is claiming Web 2.0 but this seems like an idea that would have wowed them 5 years ago.We have a bluetooth printer in the car and wait here is a shocker - My windows Mobile device has BLUETOOTH also! 2007-08-20 07:41:00
Alot of web designers have probably heard of Browsercam's pay service that allows you to test your web design in a multitude of different browsers and platforms using a distributed screen-shot service. But I, personally have not subscribed to browser cam simply because I have the ability to preview in the browser variants that I need myself. The primary browsers I'm to code for are firefox 1.5 and above and IE 6 and above. I usually manage to accomplish this using remote desktop and the such. But now, as I totally predicted, there has emerged a challenger, that has managed to distribute the process amongst many different (donated) platforms. This emergence can be found at https://vo4.browsershots.org/, where an ingenious developer named Johann C. Rocholl has taken on the brave competition with Browser cam. The system is not totally complete yet, however it is functional for the purposes it was created for, and is totally usable towards those ends. The main drawback is the 30 minut...

AtA gets reviewed + A Word From The Admin
2007-08-19 15:20:00
Good Morning Boys and Girls. I wanted to share with you this glowing review we got from the guys over @ TechWag here.A good system administrator is worth their weight in gold, anyone that can run around the networked systems and fix the bizarre arcane things that happen on a daily basis, regardless of operating system, is one of those folks that end up becoming a key person in an organization. If you do not love them and cherish them, then the company is going to loose probably one of the most valuable assets they can own, a decent system administrator. We were told about a site called ?Ask the Admin ? that is right over here, a while back, and as we started looking at it, the advice is good, and really realistic in terms of dealing with a number of issues that seem to crop up daily. If you need or want a generalized question answered, you can ask them. If you want to find the answer to a question that your boss is asking, like should we use full or partial RSS feeds, then you can fin...
