Can I hide the Sceduled Tasks and Printers Folders in the Network view?
2008-06-10 06:01:00
By default your windows XP machine shows the Printers and Faxes share along with the Scheduled Tasks folder. You can make use of the scheduled tasks folder like this or use a remote printer share to quickly install a remote printer. Some people like this, most people don't use it and a few people REALLY hate it. So here is a quick how-to on peacing it out:To hide the Scheduled Tasks from the network share view, follow these steps: Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Explorer RemoteComputer NameSpace Backup the key by exporting it to a .REG file. (You need this to revert back!) To remove Scheduled Tasks, delete the following key: {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} To remove the Printers folder, delete the following key: {2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D} Close Registry Editor.By deleting one key or the other you are removing the folders from the network view and no...

Im addicted to Googles Image Labeler Game - HELP ME!
2008-06-06 15:01:00
It started, way back when, I read a Boing-Boing post about Google Image Labeler. It warned me about how addictive it is but I mean really who would think that:You would want to help Google and add labels to their images. You could easily spend HOURS on the site. You have more fun mocking other players then playing.Well they are all true! You log in and Google finds a partner for you and they show you pictures one at a time. You and your partner only see the same picture nothing else. You need to match your labels with theirs. The more obscure the word is the more points you will get. I went into this thing laughing and walked away 5 hours later very serious and very solemn. I almost made the leader board! Wait - when did that become my goal of the day? What happened to my work?I do find myself mocking the other players as I have already typed in 7 valid labels and then started with Idiot, moron, do you sense a pattern... Now why does that entertain me? Well you see everything your par...

Gmail and Gmail Chat slowing down? Here are some Gmail performance tweaks t
2008-06-06 13:41:00
Hello kiddies,Commodore 64 here to bring you the next solution to the next most annoying thing in my work day.At my day job, we use Gmail as a back end for all of our corporate email. So when the higher ups started noticing everyone's AIM windows popping up, they hastily banned everyone in the company (including myself, the Admin, sheesh) from using AIM.Though I must say Aim has done nothing to shed it's kiddified skin, and intrusive flashing popups that are the default options when you install AIM. So the perfect solution for me seemed to be Gmail chat. After using Gmail chat for a while, I was very pleased with its non invasive type of notification options, and the rudimentary look actually helps in a corporate situation. We just dont need a colorful flashy chat at work. We need something a little tamer. Gmail Chat was the clear winner. But after a while i noticed that things were getting very slowwwww. Now I knew that Firefox had some memory management issues, but I never would h...

Windows XP hates President Bush! Have you seen this strange trick?
2008-06-05 14:21:00
Good morning fellow conspiracy nuts and lovers of all things strange... This interesting little tidbit is a Windows XP, 2000 or NT only trick. If you open up Notepad on your system and create a document that contains the phrase "Bush hid the facts" and save it with any filename. I chose Paranoia.txt.Now try and re-open the document. And you will see something that looks like the following. Is this a Snarky Microsoft political comment? Probably not seeming that "Bill fed the goats" or even "hhhh hhh hhh hhhhh" brings about the same garbage. If the file is saved as "Unicode" rather than the default "ANSI" then the text displays correctly. This does not happen on Vista, so maybe the Feds got to Redmond already... Or maybe it's a XP (GASP) Bug?We just don't know! Anyone out there really know why this combination of 4,3,3,5 does this? "Karl led the users" saves properly and it fits the pattern._TheParanoidAdmiN_Check out our RSS feed. Need Free Tech Support? Ask The Admin a Question

Let's bring you loyal readers up to speed with the going on's at AtA head quarters in New York City. Our internal staff has been able to get Wordpress all setup and almost everything migrated over from Blogger. Except our comments. The guys at Intense Debate are working on it (slowly) but working on it. The guys from Disqus have told us they can solve our issues but not with the export file we gave them and JS-Kit never did come back around... Maybe they got scared off.Ether which way if our issues are not resolved by this time next week we will be making the switch. Why can't I see the borders around my labels in Word 2003?
2008-06-04 06:06:00
Jane writes to us that her boss gave her the task to create address labels for file folders around the office. She has used the feature in Word 2003 before and went to Tools... Envelopes and Labels ...She chose her label type and hit new document expecting to see a page of blank labels. Instead she saw a blank page! Something was not right here and she could not figure out what it was or how to fix it!Over at AtA headquarters we have seen this before and I was able to fix Janey up dumb quick. Here is what we had to do:Open a page of labels like we showed you above.Click Table on the menu bar (Or Alt-A)Click Show Gridlines. And that's it the borders have returned and you can go back to entering your data! This feature does the same thing for ANY tables within word.Do you have any Word tips, tricks or helpful how-to's? Where can I find a good free screen saver to display my pictures?
2008-06-03 14:40:00
Being a new parent and having many computers that stay on I have configured them all to be digital picture frames when not in use. Originally I did this by simply activating the built in "My Pictures " screen saver from Windows. This left my options severely limited. I could only use a folder on my desktop and not use pictures that live online.Weak.This sent me looking for another free more configurable solution. And I found it on my first shot.Google has downloadable applications that they call "The Google Pack". I won't go into all it's other offerings right now but, we will focus on the Google Photos Screen saver. This 4.4 MB install packs a lot of wallop. The Google lists it's main features as being:Display photos from your PC and photo sharing sitesWatch cinematic slideshowsThose two innocent lines look rather boring until you actually try them out. Now I can not only display pictures of my daughter but how about my niece's and nephew's updated photos?I sure can! Just by con...

Make Groupwise Webmail play nice with IE7+ or Firefox 2+?
2008-06-03 06:03:00
So you followed the leader and finally let Microsoft Update install IE7 or installed a new version of FireFox, and now you can't get to your corporate webmail. Yikes!Wait, dont uninstall that modern browser just yet.If you've ever tried to access GroupWise webmail from Internet Explorer 7 or Firefox v2+, you will get a blank page, or a page error. Dont worry, its actually a very simple fix.The new versions of both browsers only use SSL 3.0 by default, but Groupwise can only authenticate with SSL 2.0 (the next version of groupwise should add SSL 3 support). So all we need to do is to enable SSL 2.0, below are the instructions for IE and FireFox. Please comment if you have the same issue with other browsers. Here are the instructions for Internet Explorer v7+Navigate to Tools>Internet Options>AdvancedCheck the Box “Use SSL 2.0”, and click “OK” Then Refresh the page. Here Are the Instructions for FireFox v2+In a new tab type "about:config" in the address bar and press enterIn t...

Open Source E-Mail Encryption
2008-06-01 06:03:00
"...Perhaps you think your email is legitimate enough that encryption is unwarranted. If you really are a law-abiding citizen with nothing to hide, then why don't you always send your paper mail on postcards? Why not submit to drug testing on demand? Why require a warrant for police searches of your house? Are you trying to hide something? If you hide your mail inside envelopes, does that mean you must be a subversive or a drug dealer, or maybe a paranoid nut?..." -Philip Zimmerman, Creater of PGPOf course it doesn't, it simply means you value your privacy.PGP, or more specifically Open PGP is a great, and more importantly FREE method of securing your data and your e-mails. You don't want "The Man" reading your e-mails, and neither do I.There are many PGP and OpenPGP programs out there, but the one that is the most versatile that I have seen is called GnuPG. It comes in some form for every operating system. It comes standard with Ubuntu Linux, and there are versions for Windows an...

Using Windows Vista Snipping tool (Video)
2008-05-30 07:13:00
The Admin has covered the Vista Snipping tool recently but, you know what they say about a picture being worth a thousand words... How about a video? How many words is that worth? But here is the second in a series of Video how-to's By Dan Morrill, on special assignment to Ask the Admin. If you missed Dan's first one on Wednesday, on how to use Word 2007 as a blog editor, then here it is. Windows Vista comes with a number of handy tools, the best one is the windows vista snipping tool. This tool allows you to capture a JPG image from whatever is on the screen, and save it off for use later. This is very handy when you need a logo from a site, that is using a text based logo with no images that you can download and save. This program can be found under start, all programs, accessories and can really make your day easier when you need to capture an image off the screen. This completely replaces the alt+print screen or function+print screen and is very cool. ...

2008-05-29 17:24:00
It has been a while since I wrote about Intense Debate (ID). We used ID for a short while and LOVED it. We loved it so much we wanted our existing comments imported into the system. I was informed by Josh that we could help beta test the process. You know we jumped on board! It has now been about 4 months since we did our import from blogger to ID and replaced ALL of our comments with ID's. There were issues immediately. The names of the commenter's DID NOT come over. So all the comments look like they are from the same person... I was told by the good people over at ID that they would find a solution and get back to me. Their solution was to replace their importer and create one that actually imports the commenter's names and stats. So I figured GREAT! Let's do this! Then I was told very politely that the new process won't work for me because I was already imported. Even though I specifically requested a DB backup at several points. WAIT THERE IS MORE! They WERE able to go into m...

2008-05-29 14:13:00
As a daily Windows user I can safely say that I didn't know how convenient being able to save a document as a PDF, is without installing ANY software. Still there are the times you need to protect your documents and up until now you needed the full blown Adobe Acrobat Pro Suite to do that (Edit: Or another PDF Application) Now I have noticed that in Leopard; Cupertino has given it's users some security options. What kind of security options you might be asking...Well you can password protect the file and limit actions such as printing or copying text. Very cool built in options. So unless you are a crazy PDF freak I don't see a real reason to purchase a full blown version of Acrobat on a mac.You go to save your document and choose PDF as your file type and you will see a button that says Security options. Click it and you will be greeted by this preference window:Microsoft could learn a thing or two from the newest Mac OS. Where have their spies been lately? Or is this what we sh...

IP Subnet Mask Quick Cheat Sheet
2008-01-09 06:01:00
So I get asked on a regular basis how many addresses can i get from a /24 subnet or what does 255.255.255.0 mean.Let me break it down for you real quick like:When you use 255.255.255.0 as your subnet you are limiting yourself to a network containing all the same ip's except for the last number. Like 192.168.1.0 where the 0 changes. And using 255.255.0.0 Would limit you to the last two digits changing like 192.168.0.0 . Are you with me? Mark O'Neil from MakeUseOf and GeeksAreSexy put us onto a method of running an installer in a "Safe Space" using the Run As command (Via protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity check box). This is a great method for running programs that might be a little suspicious. That little check box prevents the newly launched app from intermingling with protected system files.I should remind you before continuing that you should only install software from reputable sources. How Can I Remove Windows Components in Vista?
2008-01-04 21:28:00
I got a call out of the blue from a Navy buddy of mine who is stationed in Germany yesterday asking me how he can uninstall Windows Media Player from his new Windows Vista machine. Seeing as how I haven't gone down the Vista road yet I wasn't sure.I thought it would be just like in Windows XP where you go into Add/ Remove Programs, then go into Add/Remove Windows Components . Of course it wasn't that easy in Vista. No, once again they made a change for the sake of change. In order to Add/Remove Windows Components in Windows Vista, you have to do the following:Open Control Panel In the left hand pane choose “Classic View” Double click “Programs and Features” Look in the left hand pane and click on “Turn Windows Features on or off” Once the box is “updated” you will be able to Add/Remove Windows ComponentsI remoted into his computer in Germany using ShowMyPc and was able to go in and uninstall it for him. I'm glad to know that even though I am no longer in the Navy, ...
How To Convert A DVD To iPod Format for Free
2008-01-04 13:40:00
This Christmas, I got my sister a DVD and showed her how to rip it and put it on her iPod. She hadn't been able to do such a thing in the past, as she isn't technically inclined and didn't have time to learn all of the steps with older software to get the job done. This method will work with any iPod, the Apple TV, or any other device/video format you can think of. Best of all, it doesn't cost and takes only an hour and a half on a fast computer for the 5g iPod.To start, you need to download the software. That's pretty straight forward. You will be downloading DVD43, which runs in the background and decrypts DVD's. The ripper we will be using is the Windows version of Handbrake.Go ahead and install them, and make sure to restart the computer before you continue, as DVD43 requires a reboot.Once rebooted, you should notice a little smiley face in the system tray. Insert the DVD you wish to rip. When the smiley turns green, proceed to open Handbrake. In Handbrake, click the Show P...
