New Zunes to share video?
2007-11-07 00:33:00 Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video Microsoft just sent out the November Zune News email blast, and it's got a rather intriguing line in there: "... Zune Social where you can share music, videos and pictures that define you." We know Stevie B has spoken about the idea of Zunes sharing video, but we're suddenly concerned with the world of pain about to befall either us -- in DRM form -- or Microsoft -- in lawsuit form.P.S. -What the hell is up with "The Social" popping back up? Didn't Microsoft leave it behind? Or has "the social" just become the product's tagline-tagline? We don't know, but we don't like it when these guys try and mess with our heads. Phoenix Technologies launches HyperSpace ?instant on? embedded OS
2007-11-06 21:13:00 Filed under: Desktops It appears that DeviceVM won't be able to sit around and gloat over its "instant on" SplashTop Linux OS that's being integrated into ASUS motherboards, as they've got some competition on the horizon. A company called Phoenix Technologies is introducing a new mini-OS called Hyper Space (what's with all these compound names?) that features a four second boot time. Using a form of virtualization which sets aside memory and disk space for the small boot, the ROM-based environment lets you access Firefox, launch a DVD movie, or fire up other apps while your system loads Vista or XP in the background. Apparently, the BIOS-embedded platform will also allow manufacturers and developers to embed their own, customized applications, thus extending the range of uses for the system. Soon, you won't have to wait even a tenth of a minute to check your Facebook inbox.[Via Good Morning Silicon Valley] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot ... One Billion Text Messages Sent Every Week
2007-11-06 09:17:00 According to the latest stats from the Mobile Data Association (MDA), UK phone users are sending more than 1.2 billion texts every week ? that?s more than all the text messages sent in 1999. For September, text messages in the UK topped 4.8 billion, a 25% jump over the same period in 2006. The MDA has now revised its yearly prediction for texts sent to 52 billion, up from 48 billion. Mike Short, Chairman, the Mobile Data Association, said: ?The continued growth of text volumes remains a source of fascination for us all at the MDA. We have been central in helping to promote the technology from our initial campaigns back in 1998. Today text messaging remains important but as part of a much larger and more complex mobile communications industry. The UK text volumes show no real signs of abating and the UK sits within the top six of the global league of countries sending text messages.? Now prepare yourselves for the September Stat Smackdown after the jump.-Martin Lynch September... More About: News , Mobile Phone , Messages , Text , Week

Xbox 360 parental timer coming in December?
2007-11-06 09:13:00 Filed under: Gaming Xbox 360 addicts, particularly ones under the age of 18 (or still camping out in your 'rents crib), take note: a "Family Timer " could be wrecking your habitual play as early as next month. The above image was reportedly spotted in the pamphlet of a Guitar Hero III keychain (we know...), and it touts the timer's ability to easily limit how much time kids spend on the console. If this proves legitimate, the new functionality will be available via Xbox Live next month, and there's even an option to "suspend or add time" depending on how those report cards turn out. Parent s, we know how much flak you'll be getting should you activate this "feature" right around the holidays, but hey, just tell those immature youngsters of yours that you're simply following in the footsteps of Bill Gates himself.[Via Joystiq] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life! PS3 Sets Guinness World Record
2007-11-05 09:30:00 The under-selling PS3 has actually managed to set a world record ? and not for the slowest console take-off either. The Guinness Book of Records has officially named Folding@home project the world?s most powerful distributed computing network ? thanks largely to help of 670,000 PS3s. The Stanford University project which has been using spare processing power from over 200,000 PCs to look at the causes of diseases like Alzheimer?s, has been greatly boosted by chip power from over 670,000 PS3 users that have signed up to allow some of their systems power to be used for calculations. The power output has been pushed over the one petaflops mark for the first time ever. ?To have Folding@home recognised by Guinness World Records as the most powerful distributed computing network ever is a reflection of the extraordinary worldwide participation by gamers and consumers around the world and for that we are very grateful,? said Vijay Pande, Associate Professor of Chemistry at Stanford Uni... Second steampunk laptop wants to be clockwork
2007-11-05 08:50:00 Filed under: Laptop s You like Steampunk , do ya? Well, looks like we've got another laptop iteration for you today, this time entitled "A Clockwork Laptop." Yeah, it's got a bunch of brass and copper fittings -- plus some gothic looking legs -- and an overall retro fantasy style that some people like and others may hate. Make sure to check out the hundred or so cogs inside a glass screen on the back of the real screen. To turn it on you even have to turn a rusty key embedded inside the thumb rest: although you'll still be booting into an anachronistic Ubuntu install if you do so. Check out s'more pics at the link below, and know that you'll never be arsed to make anything even half as impressive. Also, anyone getting a strange craving for a glass of milk after seeing this?[Via UberReview] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

DARPA?s Urban Challenge ends, all eleven cars cross the line
2007-11-04 20:45:00 Filed under: Robots, Transportation DARPA's Urban Challenge has finished, with all eleven cars making it across the finishing line. Cars from Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and Virginia Tech were the "winners," taking less than the six hour maximum to complete the 60 mile course which involved avoiding obstacles and fifty cars with human drivers. The overall winner of the $2 million prize has yet to be announced, although were guessing it'll be one of the latter three teams rather than the eight other cars that completed the course. Despite the significant collision potential, there was only one minor fender bender (which didn't even stop the two cars.) That's a far better showing than the first ever "Desert" Challenge in 2004 where not a single car finished. Since then the number of cars completing has only increased, and with it, the potential for cars that can drive themselves. Fujitaka readies age-verifying cigarette machines for Japanese launch
2007-11-03 20:24:00 Filed under: Misc. GadgetsRecall those age-verifying cigarette machines we mentioned last year? Even if not, Fujita ka is getting set to remind everyone in Japan under the age of 20 that they won't be getting their fix unless they've got the face (or ID) to prove it. Reportedly, the outfit is hoping to launch 10,000 or so units -- which range in price between ¥700,000 ($6,070) to ¥900,000 ($7,805) -- within the next year, and each one will feature a camera / face-recognition software in order to determine if the hopeful purchaser is indeed of age. After the "adult recognition" button is pressed, it snaps a photo of the customer-to-be and analyzes certain features to make its judgment, and if it just can't decide one way or another, it'll require a license to be inserted as proof of age. 'Course, one could always enlist the assistance of a nearby 20-something in order to satisfy their urge, but at least this is a step in the right direction to curb underage puffing. [Wa...
