Samsung paves the way for 128GB memory card
2007-11-14 19:54:00
Filed under: StorageSamsung 's been blowing our minds with its memory advancements for years, so we're not at all surprised that this very company has seemingly figured out a way (officially, that is) to concoct a 128GB memory card. The secret to such a capacious offering is a new manufacturing process dubbed self-aligned double patterning technology (SaDPT), which has enabled the firm to create the "world's first" 64Gb multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory chip using 30-nanometer process technology. Up to 16 of the 64Gb units can be combined to create a drool-worthy 128GB memory card, which can easily hold a modest DVD collection or upwards of 32,000 MP3s (its number, not ours). Apparently, Sammy hopes to crank up production on the flash devices in 2009, but until then, we'll just have to make do with its awe-inspiring 64GB SSD.[Via CNET] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring...

Creative sells 25 million MP3 players
2007-11-14 19:26:00
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video It's been a long and winding road, but Creative announced today that it's sold 25 million MP3 players since it first shipped the parallel port-only Nomad in 1999. While that's not quite as many players as a certain fruit company, it's still a pretty astonishing number, and it speaks to the giant shift that's taken place in how we all consume media here in the future. Although the competition has gotten stiffer lately, Creative's various Zen and MuVo players seem like they're still in the fight -- here's to another 25 million. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

This is how you sell LCD TVs
2007-11-14 19:00:00
That little peanut is holding a big TV. Either she’s freakishly strong or the TV itself is unbelievably light. Any proud owner of a handful of LCD TVs and monitors would tell you that they’re often heavier than they look. These new Hitachi units look light and probably are light. They make up the ...

Nokia’s patent-licensing case against Qualcomm dropped by Dutch court
2007-11-14 18:59:00
Filed under: CellphonesLast we heard from the seemingly endless Nokia / Qualcomm kvetch-fest, the former company was soliciting the ITC's help in barring US Qualcomm chip imports, but for those wishing on their lucky stars that this spat would simply vanish into the night, we've got marginally good news. Apparently, a trio of judges in a Dutch court ruled that it didn't have jurisdiction to rule on the phone maker's claims outside of The Netherlands, thus, the patent-licensing case against Qualcomm was dismissed. Aside from claiming that its "jurisdiction was limited," the court also stated that Nokia's gripe was "too broad to give a reasoned decision." Of note, a German court also dismissed the case just last month on "similar grounds," but if you were counting on Nokia to just take the news in stride, we doubt you'll be pleased to hear that it's already "considering if it will appeal the decision." Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Fea...

South Korea doubles up, now getting two robot theme parks
2007-11-14 15:54:00
Filed under: Robot s Thrill seekers and robot admirers alike can mark South Korea down as a must-see destination in the coming years, as it will soon be home to not one, but two robot theme parks. Yeah, we already knew that one of these fantasmical places were on the planning block, but just today the Commerce Ministry "announced a proposal to build two parks by 2013 for $1.6 billion." Reportedly, each park will mesh culture and entertainment with robot technology, and while one will be built in Incheon, the other will be erected some 242 miles south of Seoul in the port city of Masan. A feasibility study slated for next year is apparently the only piece of red tape still holding this project back, but if the bigwigs in South Korea shut the whole thing down, we'll gladly take 'em here on this side of the pond.[Image courtesy of SciFi] Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to ...

Moneual?s 972 Home Media Server hearts Blu-ray
2007-11-14 15:34:00
Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment, Media PCs The last time we heard from Moneual, it was showing off a funky fresh tubular HTPC at CEDIA, but now it seems the firm is putting its poker face back on for the thoroughly traditional 972 Home Media Serve r . This rig rocks a tried and true flat black chassis, built-in display (at least it sure looks like one), a minimalist feel and a built-in Blu-ray writer to boot. 'Course, you'll find all the usual media PC amenities here including PVR functionality, but mum's the word on actual hardware configurations. Keep it locked for more just as soon as we find out. Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Mossberg?s new Zune review sounds familiar
2007-11-14 15:14:00
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video Mr. Mossberg just handed down his verdict on the latest series of Microsoft Zune s. Those of you who shout him down with your flaccid cries of "fanboi" will want to turn away... now. Walt considers the new Zunes a "vast improvement" over Microsoft's first generation player. However, "it's still no iPod." Oh, there's plenty to like: the Zune 80's big display, the squircle navigator, built-in FM radio, and enhanced PC software and Zune Marketplace. Annoyances too, naturally. Notably, Walt found the included WiFi to be "nearly useless" in value while providing an unwelcome drain on the battery. In summation he says, "Microsoft has greatly improved the Zune hardware and software this time. But it seems to be competing with Apple's last efforts, not its newest ones." Hmm, this all sounds strangely familiar. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to b...

Iqua?s Sun, the solar-powered Bluetooth headset
2007-11-14 09:27:00
Filed under: Cellphones, PeripheralsBluetooth headsets are one of those accessories that need to work well and stay the hell out of your way, and often times remembering to charge them (in addition to your phone) is a real drag. Incoming from the ridiculously obvious department: Iqua's solar-powered Bluetooth headset. We're not sure how much solar charging is an order to combat the energy stresses of use (or whether this thing for sure has a battery -- although we can't imagine why it wouldn't), but one less minuscule gadget to worry about charging is just fine by us. We'll hit you with more on this one as info becomes available. Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Samsung?s SyncMaster 2263DX: the 22-inch UbiSync monitor
2007-11-14 09:12:00
Filed under: DisplaysBarely a month after Samsung finally got its long-awaited 940UX out the door, the firm is on the prowl once more waving that tremendously tempting UbiSync technology all up in our grills. Truth be told, all we really know about the forthcoming SyncMaster 2263DX is that it features a 22-inch panel and can be connected via USB 2.0 rather than DVI / VGA. But hey, that alone is plenty to keep us satisfied for a month or so -- but after the grace period expires, we've every intention of sifting through hidden lines of code in Sammy's website in a desperate attempt to locate a price and release date. Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Hello from Tokyo
2007-11-14 03:40:00
Hello from Tokyo , internet access is a little tough for me at the moment where I am staying but there's a daily way for me to get access now! The first day there was a quick trip to Ginza, ("Silver seat") is considered one of the super-high end shopping areas of Tokyo. The toy store on the very end of the main street Ginza-dori has numerous hobbyist kits and models, but the real treat today was finding these electronic kits as well as hobby kits at a gigantic electronics store (7 floors) called "BIG CAMERA" - some of the kits are in a box with a small magazine-like publication attached. This might be an interesting way for us at MAKE to do kits one day, maybe all the parts in the box with the latest MAKE that has the project and more, fun to consider! Here are some pictures. The phonograph and electronic blocks will likely be coming home with me. If you're in Tokyo, MAKE will be here this week: Dorkbot Tokyo (http://jo.swo.jp/) Date: 2007.11.18 (18:00 open, ...

Alienware M15x / M17x laptops revealed with NVIDIA 8800M GTX
2007-11-14 02:27:00
Filed under: Laptops It's no secret that Alienware laptops have long loved to pack some serious NVIDIA-based heat, and judging by screenshots (another shown after the jump) of a reported slip up earlier today, those scouting a new extraterrestrial rig might want to hold out just a tick longer. It looks as if the firm will soon be unveiling (officially, that is) the 15-inch M15x and 17-inch M17x gaming laptops, both of which will seemingly be available with the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800M GTX graphics processor. As for the 8M-series GPU, it'll boast full DirectX 10 support, the Lumenex Engine, second-generation PureVideo HD technology, a 500MHz core clock, 1,250MHz shader clock and an 800MHz memory clock. Regarding the actual lappies, all we know is that the smaller of the two will be available with a 1,440 x 900 resolution display, 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB HDD, dual-layer DVD writer and Vista Home Premium. Actiontec?s zControl router extends networks to TVs, cellphones
2007-11-14 01:56:00
Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment, NetworkingWe really, really wish we knew a bit more about Actiontec's ZCHAV1, but our interest has been officially piqued, regardless. Following in the footsteps of a few niche products already announced, this "router accessory" claims to extend home networks to televisions, cellphones and "other devices," and it will reportedly enable users to "control all network components from any display platform." Granted, this firm is no newcomer to cranking out multifaceted networking gizmos, but it looks like we'll be playing the ole wait-and-see game with the zControl. Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Norazza PocketRAID takes data redundancy on the road
2007-11-13 21:28:00
Filed under: Storage Prebuilt RAID arrays are pretty mainstream now, but they're usually massive in size and focused on sheer storage volume -- two qualities Norazza's PocketRAID eschews in the name of portable data redundancy. The 1.5-inch thick PocketRAID contains what we're assuming is two 1.8-inch hard drives in a permanent RAID 1 configuration, allowing you to work with up to 320GB of data on the road without fear. The eSATA / USB 2.0 drives are shipping now, if you've got the coin -- prices range from $439 for 120GB to a whopping $929 for 320GB of storage. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

Zune going easy on the launch, heavy on the ads
2007-11-13 15:59:00
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video Don't worry, you're not the only one 'round these parts that's wondering where all the fanfare went. Microsoft decided to do up the launch of its new Zune s without all the launch hullabaloo of the first time around, probably hoping the devices will speak for themselves -- which they seem to doing alright at so far. At the same time, the company is throwing three times the advertising dollars at the Zune this year according to the New York Post, to the tune of $27 million. Time will tell if this move pays off for Microsoft. Jason Reindorp, director of marketing for Zune, stated it most clearly: "Our No. 1 business priority this year is we want to be the clear alternative to the iPod." Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!
