Micron unveils RealSSD Solid State Drives in 32 GB, 64 GB Flavors
2007-11-28 20:19:00
Micron announced today that they will be releasing the RealSSD line of solid state drives, including a 64 GB drive. While the entire line ranges from 1 GB-64 GB, the 32 and 64 GB models are geared towards notebook and desktop use. The drives feature a SATA II interface and draw a mere 2 watts of power. The 32 GB drive will come in 1.8" and 2.5" sizes, while the 64 bit will only ship in a 2.5" size. Micron, who also owns memory makers Lexar and Crucial, will release an SSD USB enclosement under the Crucial brand, making SSD expansion easier for users. No word yet on pricing, but Micron expects the products to ship in Q1 2008. [Micron]

Toshiba hops on bandwagon, plants Carbon Zero Scheme
2007-11-28 20:15:00
Considering that (practically) every other mega-corp on the planet is doing something related to environmental conservatism, Toshiba is making sure it's not left behind. Consequently, the outfit has crafted the Carb on Zero Scheme, which allows customers (or philanthropists) to donate £1.18 ($2.43) in exchange for Toshiba "offsetting the lifetime carbon footprint of one's laptop." Interestingly, you don't actually have to purchase a new machine in order to participate, so you can still squash the guilt you're currently feeling as you gaze at the LCD of your five-month old, non-offset lappie. For each donation, the company will plant trees in a dedicated area in Cumbria, and you can supposedly rest easy knowing that you've done a small part to look after Mother Earth.

Google Maps for Mobile 2.0 Provides Faux-GPS with My Location
2007-11-28 19:09:00
Google has just announced Google Maps for Mobile 2.0 which will allow people without GPS-enabled phones to pinpoint their location on their handsets. Using its new "My Location " technology, which uses the location of nearby cell towers to determine your location, it delivers a makeshift GPS-like locator on many phones without GPS. It'll also compliment phones that do have GPS capabilities, as this technique is faster than GPS and works better in buildings where GPS can be flakey. It doesn't work on every phone, unfortunately, but it will work on "most smartphones, including all color BlackBerry devices, all Symbian Series 60 3rd Edition devices, most Windows Mobile devices, newer Sony Ericsson devices, and some Motorola devices." There's a beta of it available for your perusal now.

Apple Opens Online Store for Mexico, Giving Away MacBooks and iPods
2007-11-28 18:59:00
Apple says Hola to Mexico by opening up its own online store and giving away a MacBook a day and an iPod every hour. What I'm told is that Latin Americans forced to buy things via the US store ended up paying a lot more. This should help our Southernly. [Apple Store Mexico]

Google May Open Internet File Storage Service
2007-11-27 22:56:00
According to the Wall Street Journal, the Soon-to-Be-Inter-dimensional Empire also known as Google is planning to give free online disk storage beyond the gigabytes they already allocate for GMail, Picasa or Google Apps. This space will be able to hold any kind of file, although it's not clear how would it be integrated with your desktop, if at all. The storage service, which hasn't been officially confirmed yet, brings up loads of questions and concerns: Would it work like AOL's Xdrive or Apple iDisk, fully integrated with your computer? It looks like the more user-friendly option, so we can assume it will be. Would Google analyze the data stored in their servers for advertising purposes? They will be providing with search on your stored documents, so most probably they will be able to give you ads while you search results. Does this raise privacy concerns? According to the WSJ, Kevin Bankston, staff attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, thinks you will be less p...

Glowing Umbrella Keeps You Infinitesimally Safer at Night
2007-11-27 20:49:00
Glowing umbrellas usually light up their shafts rather than their mushroom-like tips, but this concept "Glowing Umbrella " has a glowing parasol to illuminate your way at night. It's lovely in the way that a black, non-light up umbrella isn't, but is only a concept for now. If science and technology could manage to make one of these that doesn't require swapping out batteries every other day (and make it under $50), we'd be in for four.>Link exchange with Tech Gadget Blog ? Nokia N810 unboxed and scrutinized
2007-11-25 09:48:00
Look, we're right there with you -- wishin', hopin', gettin' down on our knees and begging like crazy for someone to take pity on us and pop for the N810 this holiday season. Well, at least one lucky gentleman has already had the pleasure of cracking open the sweet stuff -- AKA, Nokia 's latest and greatest internet tablet -- and has put all sorts of nasty pictures on the internet (we suspect in an attempt to make us insane with jealousy). The post also has some useful and interesting info in regards to the software and functionality of the device, so you can get informed while ogling the photos. We recommend you hit the read link and check out all the graphic details... and don't forget -- the Tech Gadget Blog crew needs love too, so feel free to drop something silver in the mail for us come December.>Link exchange with Tech Gadget Blog ? Rock Xtreme 770 notebook with GeForce 8800M GTX reviewed
2007-11-24 21:01:00
NVIDIA's recently rolled out GeForce 8800M GTX has already made its way into a laptop, specifically Rock 's Xtreme 770, specially updated to integrate the new chip. The 770 features a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, a 7200RPM 200GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, a 17-inch 1920x1200 display, and that all important GeForce 8800M GTX graphics card. The new card is certainly no disappointment, kicking the 8700M by a factor of two in most gaming benchmarks (although that also says a lot about the 8700M's lackluster performance.) The bottom line with the 8800M GTX is that it enables acceptable performance in Crysis at reasonable resolutions, which is more than can be said of most desktops. However, you might want to hold off until the GPU reaches lappies other than the Rock Extreme 770, which costs £2,199: that's over $4,500 at the current exchange rate.>Link exchange with Tech Gadget Blog ? 2007-09-10 23:06:00
Sony's new A810 and S610 series Walkmans have just barely made it out the door, but it looks like the company has already decided to shave a few bucks off the price of 'em. According to the Sony Style website, the A810 now starts at $120 for the 2GB model (as opposed to the $140 launch price), while the 4GB will set you back $150 and the 8GB demands an even $200. The S610 series, on the other hand, now starts at just $100 for the 2GB model (down from $120 before), with the 4GB and 8GB coming it at $130 and $180, respectively. Toyota to purchase Sony's robotic division?
2007-08-25 16:44:00
According to Japan's Nikkei Business, Toyota is set to purchase Sony's robotics division. The whole shebang: robots and researchers. Apparently, Sir Howard Stringer is looking to rid Sony of the money losing division to Toyota's delight. Does this mean the resurrection of little AIBO? No telling (though it's surely a quick way to win converts... hint), but we're pretty certain that the news will raise the eyebrow of Honda's Asimo, you know, if he had any. >Link exchange with Tech Gadget Blog ? Palm Centro Leaked Official Shot
2007-08-25 16:23:00
The Palm Centro has been courting much attention lately thanks to a host of blurry pictures and news of its diminutive stature. Today we have the first (leaked) press photo shot of the device and it does not look half bad. We have no news in the way of clarified specification from that of what has already been reported. The main details are; the device shall run on EVDO and it shall be pitched at the youth market. Further, the full QWERTY keypad will be complimented by a touchscreen and the price will be a speculated, very reasonable, $99. Sprint shall have exclusive rights for 90 days, after the 90 days mark a free for all shall likely ensue. The new picture shows a sophisticated looking device, not only will it be the smallest Treo to date, but the supposed youth market orientation may have been altered from earlier suggestions. After all, the colour scheme looks sophisticated and the youth only like their devices in a generic, iPod white plastic finish, as depicted in earlier...

Best of all, it's available right now on 3.

Tiny wind engines cool computers
2007-08-15 19:15:00
A team of researchers at Purdue University look to be doing their best to put conventional computer cooling techniques to shame, to that end developing a prototype system that uses an "ionic wind" to keep chips cool, something they say could eventually allow for much more powerful computers. According to the BBC, the system employs an ionic engine that produces positively charged particles when a voltage is applied to it. Those particles are then naturally drawn to a negatively charged wire, resulting in a constant air movement over the chips. That, the researchers say, increases the cooling rate from a conventional fan by up to 250%. They're apparently far from satisfied with the system just yet though, and they're now working to make it a hundred times smaller than its current size -- a feat all the more daunting considering that it already measures just a few millimeters.

Toshiba's HD-A3x third generation HD DVD players get official
2007-08-06 23:55:00
Looks like we won't have to wait 'til CEDIA to learn more about Toshi ba's next generation HD DVD players. Amazon had the model numbers and prices right, which are in-line with the last generation of players, with the exception of the top of the line HD-A35 it has an MSRP of $499 compared to the HD-XA2's $799. The entry level HD-A3 has pretty much the same features set as the last time around, but its bigger brothers include a few extras including 24p support, (HD-A20 and HD-XA2 are expected to get an firmware update in September to enable 24p) and CE-Link. Both of these features are a must-have if your TV supports them and should help Toshiba move a few more units this time around -- though those new looks won't hurt either.Expected Pricing and Expected Availability:HD-A3 ($299.99, October 2007)HD-A30 ($399.99, September 2007)HD-A35 ($499.99, October 2007)
