Microsoft glitch offers up Vista SP1 early
2008-02-22 19:46:00
The software wasn't supposed to be available until mid-March, however a glitch on Thursday meant that Zehr and some other general users were able to download the Vista update. The update was not pushed out via Windows' Automatic Update feature, but was listed for owners running the 64-bit version of Vista who chose to "check for new updates" via Windows Update."A build of SP1 was posted to Windows Update and it was inadvertently made available to a broad group," Microsoft said in a statement. "The build was intended only for our more technically advanced testers, and was meant to only be offered to those with a specific registry key set on their PC. For general availability, we are still planning to make SP1 broadly available in the mid-March timeframe." Zehr, who works for a technology leasing company in Illinois, said the upgrade took less than an hour and there were no immediately apparent hiccups."Unfortunately, I haven't had enough time on the machine to tell if anything is r...

China Internet Population Tops 200 Million
2008-01-19 19:38:00
The number of Internet users in China soared past 200 million in 2007, a new report from the country's quasi-government Internet overseer said Thursday.China's Internet population stood at 210 million at the end of last year, up 53 percent from the same time in 2006 when there were 137 million, the China Internet Network Information Centre said in its semi-annual report on Internet use here. That figure puts China just 5 million users away from becoming the world's largest wired nation -- and with only about 16 percent of the population online. At its current growth rate, China will become the world's top Internet market sometime in the next few months. The greatest growth came from users under 18 and over 30, CNNIC said. One of the most surprising statistics from the new report indicates that about 40 percent of users added over the last year, over 29 million, came from rural areas. Even in the January 2007 report, the vast majority of Chinese Netizens were based in major urban a...

Microsoft Money Pushes Time-Lapse Space Camera Closer to Action
2008-01-04 20:08:00
Bill Gates and ex-Microsoft executive Charles Simonyi have donated a combined $30 million to the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, which will feature the largest digital camera ever constructed. Scientists say it will provide a "color movie" of the universe. The donation will go partly to the construction of LSST's three giant mirrors, which will enable it to survey more of the sky faster than any other telescope. With its three-billion pixel camera, the telescope will produce 30 terabytes of images that will be immediately available to the public online."LSST is truly an internet telescope, which will put terabytes of data each night into the hands of anyone that wants to explore it," said Gates, who donated $10 million to the project. "The 8.4 meter LSST telescope (is) the ultimate network peripheral device to explore the universe."Gates and Simonyi join Google as major tech industry backers of the LSST. The telescope is a showcase for demonstrating how computing power can enable s...

Mortgages for bad credit
2008-01-04 20:06:00
Some people losses confidence every time they remember how their former bad credit loan experiences will affect their future financial transactions. It is true that there are times when an individual bad credit status might be known to other financial institutions in which that company is a subsidiary or an affiliate. With that, people feel that many companies are making them financially down therefore they started to lose hope and tried to keep away from various financial companies.People with bad credit history have reason to have a big smile in 2008. Bad credit is not major problem anymore because there is already some good companies that are trying to deeply research for financial institutions that accept applications from consumers with bad credit history.

Office 2003 SP3 blocks old file formats
2008-01-04 20:03:00
Microsoft Corp. deliberately broke access to older files, including many generated by its own products, to step up security with the newest Office 2003 service pack, a company evangelist said yesterday. The months-old Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Office 2003 , said Viral Tarpara, a U.K.-based IT evangelist for Microsoft, blocks old file formats for security purposes. "Some older file formats, including some from Microsoft, are insecure and do not satisfy new attack vectors that hackers can use to execute malicious code," maintained Tarpara. "The decision to block the formats is strictly to protect your machine from being compromised."Office 2003 SP3 was released in September, and questions about file access error messages began appearing almost immediately on Microsoft's support forums. Those questions continued into December. A user identified as "dberwanger" complained that he called Microsoft's support desk, but was told it would cost $250 to "fix a problem with SP3 that they created....

China Clamps Down On Internet Video
2008-01-04 20:02:00
Enjoy your streaming videos while you can, Chinese YouTube fans. The Chinese government announced new rules Thursday that could block all but a few video sites from reaching Chinese viewers. The regulations, posted to Web sites of China 's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the Ministry of Information Industry, require that effective Jan. 31, all online video outlets avoid politically or morally objectionable content and obtain a government-issued permit. While the statute could limit online video to state-controlled media sites and ban foreign-owned video-hosting sites like YouTube and MySpace, it may also go unenforced, serving more as a threat to coerce video-hosting sites to police themselves. Rather than banning sites like YouTube altogether, says Ben Edelman, a professor at Harvard Business School and an Internet filtering researcher, Beijing's new rules may be "a shot across the bow."Because the government lacks the technology to filter video as selectivel...

Goodbye To 2007--And To Analog Cell Service
2007-12-31 21:26:00
By February 18, all of the nationwide wireless carriers will have turned off their analog signals for good, and some analog-based devices will become useless chunks of circuitry as soon as tomorrow.Analog cellular has been dying for years for most of the right reasons: It drains batteries, it doesn't support any data features, and it's grossly inefficient compared to digital service. And as digital networks have steadily expanded, the amount of territory covered only by analog has shrunk--not that analog coverage matters at all if your phone, like any new model, only tunes into digital signals. So in 2002, the Federal Communications Commission voted to stop requiring carriers to offer analog service as of Feb. 18, 2008.(This ruling is interesting reading if you have the time. It notes that the FCC had earlier standardized on analog, in part, "to facilitate competition by eliminating the need for cellular consumers to acquire different handset equipment in order to switch between th...

2007-12-31 21:25:00
More than 100 universities worldwide - including Johns Hopkins, Tufts and Notre Dame - have joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in a consortium of schools promoting open courseware.Virtually all MIT courses are now available online for free and its Open CourseWare site gets more than 1 million hits per month, with translated versions getting 500,000 more. The major difference between online and real courses: one cannot get credit or earn a degree on free courseware.MIT estimates OpenCourseWear costs $20,000 per course. Money from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation started the project and currently relies on contributions from MIT's budget and endowment and from visitor donations.Yale announced this month it would make material from seven popular courses available online, with 30 more to follow."iTunes U", a section of Apple's popular music and video downloading service, now publicly hosts free material from 28 colleges. The University of California, Berkeley ...

SAY YES TO RENTAL CAR INSURANCE?
2007-12-31 21:22:00
Frequent business traveler James Smith says he's saved "tons of money" during the past 30 years declining car rental companies' optional insurance coverage. But, he acknowledges, it could have come in handy at times.Smith, an economist in Asheville, N.C., has paid $1,100 for damages to three rental cars in the past five years. Last year, a valet damaged his rental car in Maui, and his parked rental car was scraped in Buford, Ga. In 2002, he backed a car into a rock in Ireland.Smith was unaware that his personal auto insurance policy would have covered most of the damages in Ireland, so he didn't make a claim. In the other two incidents, he had to pay deductibles.Like Smith, many travelers are unsure about their coverage when they approach a car rental counter. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) surveyed 632 consumers in September, and 42% were "either thoroughly confused or had only a rough idea about insurance."The association of top state insurance offic...

Introduction:Every things comes on this earth with its pros and cons. When the world had just stepped into fabric industry it met a miracle mineral called asbestos. Being heat resitent and widely availabile asbestos is an automatic replacement for cotton. More so being resistent to chemical changes too it is also used in making lamp wicks and high tensile stregth materials. But the inhalation of this mineral causes a deadly disease called Mesothelioma .What is Mesothelioma?Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer in which asbestos attacks internal organs of the body with lungs being the worst effected. The most unfortunate thing in Mesothelioma is that it acts as a slow poison and an aggresive tumor. One may not get problems for years and suddenly it is takes one's life away. FEDERAL STUDENT LOAN CONSOLIDATION
2007-12-31 21:19:00
The end of the semester is always a useful time to remind people about options for consolidating federal student loans. A few starting points (general do?s and don?ts):- You CANNOT consolidate until you graduate.- If you consolidated in the past to take advantage of lower rates (good for you!), you CAN [and want to] reconsolidate assuming you have borrowed something since then.- You CAN consolidate wherever you want ? you are not required to use your lender even if they are your only lending source.- NEVER consolidate federal loans with private loans (for those with private loans, I have a link in the resource section to provide information about refinancing them).- ALWAYS shop around for the program that will best meet your needs.

The WoW starts now?Windows XP is good, it's very good. In fact, it's so good that most users don't see the need to switch from tried and tested XP to new and confusing Vista.XP has shown no signs of moving over anytime soon and Microsoft continues its support for its older operating system by making available to all the release candidate of the third and final service pack.Windows XP Service Pack 3 release candidate is available to download now via Microsoft's Download Center and weighs in at 336.1 MB. Please be aware that this update is in release candidate form and a final version is expected in the first half of 2008. Microsoft advise "we strongly encourage only those who are comfortable installing pre-release code to download Windows XP SP3".The last service pack for Windows XP was made available in August 2004. Apple Patches Java, OS X and Safari 3 Flaws
2007-12-19 20:25:00
Apple pushed out a bushel of patches late last week to fix at least 18 security vulnerabilities in its implementation of Java for Mac users. Then on Monday, the company issued a large update that plugged at least 40 security holes in different versions of its OS X operating system. Another standalone patch eliminates a single security flaw in Safari 3 Beta for Windows. The Java update applies to Mac systems running OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and earlier versions. Apple says none of the vulnerabilities patched in the Java roll-up are present in OS X 10.5 (Leopard). However, a fair number of the fixes in the patch batch for OS X also apply to Leopard. Some of the security vulnerabilities included in the 80 megabyte Java package were fixed by Java maker Sun Microsystems nearly a year ago. For Apple users, these are not trivial flaws: Apple says some of the holes could be used to add or remove items from a user's Keychain (which manages passwords on the Mac) without prompting the user. A slew of ...

Wikipedia Competitor Being Tested by Google
2007-12-15 13:55:00
Google is testing a new Web service intended to become a repository of knowledge from experts on various topics, one that could turn into a competitor to Wikipedia and other sites. If it attracts a following, the service could accelerate Google?s transformation from a search engine into a company that helps create and publish Web content. Some critics said that shift could compromise Google?s objectivity in presenting search results. The service, called Knol, which is short for knowledge, would allow people to create Web pages on any topic. It is designed to include features that permit readers to submit comments, rate pages and suggest changes. However, unlike Wikipedia, which allows anyone to edit an entry, only the author of a ?knol,? as the pages in the service would be called, would be allowed to edit. Different authors could have competing pages on the same topic.Google said that a main idea behind the project was to bring attention to authors who have expertise on a particular ...

AT&T Chief Says 3G iPhone is Due in 2008
2007-11-29 19:04:00
It's hard to say how calculated this was. After all, AT&T CEO, Randall Stephenson, doesn't have the reputation of being as outspoken as, say, Motorola's Ed Zander, and from the sound of it, he didn't exactly reveal some top secret iPhone specs and the identity of a CIA operative drunkenly at one of those weird super rich guy parties.Still, there's a part of me that can't help but envision a black turtlenecked Steve Jobs stroking a cat behind his giant CEO desk in Cupertino, telling Stephenson why he should never take sides against the family.Whatever the motivation, the head of the country's largest wireless carrier--an industry which Jobs, as he has already made abundantly clear, rates somewhere between the cockroach and naked mole rat on the evolutionary scale--has less than subtly spilled the beans about one crucial feature of the upcoming iteration of the Apple iPhone: 3G.

How Open Is Open?Emerging markets could be Google's primary motivation for targeting the low end of the market, MrLizardo adds. "What's in it for Google? Making sure that their page is the first one a couple billion people see the first time they get on the Internet is probably worth it."Perhaps a bigger point being debated on the blogs, however, is the question of just how open Android will be."As far as I see it, Google mobile platform is the same thing inside an OS package," wrote siddesu. AdSense Simplified Ad Management Feature Went Live

AdSense's new ad management feature finally started rolling out to publishers yesterday. But not all AdSense publishers can see this new feature yet in their account because it will take some time to roll out the feature to all publishers. As mentioned earlier in Google AdSense blog, the new feature is designed to help publishers optimize their AdSense ads in a more easier manner and save their time.I login my AdSense account just now, there is no ad management feature appearing yet. So I still didn't have to chance to use this new feature and have no idea how good is it in helping AdSense publishers to make money with AdSense.
