Best portable media player ever made
2007-09-14 16:05:00 When the iPhone came out in June, many people (myself included) loved it, but wanted it without the phone ? and that pesky two-year contract with AT&T Wireless.I'm no Luddite, but I don't want my personal media player to ring in the middle of a song. That said, the multi-touch glass display was beautiful, Cover Flow was a great way to navigate tracks, and the Web browser was better than any other portable player's before it.Apple could have delivered a player with just these features and nothing more and I would have been thrilled. But it didn't.The company added a Wi-Fi version of the iTunes Music Store so you can buy songs on the go ? now, if you have Wi-Fi access you can download tracks anywhere.Apple also announced a partnership with Starbucks that enables iPhone and Touch owners to purchase songs they hear in Starbucks stores via Wi-Fi.Okay, maybe I'm not in love with that last feature (I'm not a Starbucks addict). It would also be nice if the Wi-Fi store offered video pur... More About: Media Player , Media , Portable Media , Portable , Player
Microsoft Updates Windows Without User Permission, Apologizes
2007-09-14 16:02:00 Microsoft (MSFT) has been quietly updating Windows even when users have turned off automatic updates and without notifying users, according to reports and posts on Microsoft discussion boards.Even though the updates ended up being benign and vital to the function of Windows Updates , such a breach of trust could end up harming Microsoft's reputation.Over the last few weeks, without user approval, Windows Update has updated nine small executable files in both Windows XP and Windows Vista. "I did not download this and my Windows Update is still not set to automatic," a poster named Engle wrote on a Microsoft discussion board. "This has got me really puzzled." Both eWeek Labs and Windows Secrets report that they have confirmed cases of Windows Update downloading and installing an update without permission. The updates in question actually updated Windows Update's own software. If Windows Update doesn't update itself, it stops functioning properly and is not able to recognize when new ... More About: Microsoft , User , Permission

Prince Plans Battle Royal Against YouTube
2007-09-14 15:58:00 Prince obviously wouldn't die 4 YouTube. In fact, the "Purple Rain" purveyor is planning to take on the video-sharing giant in an effort to "reclaim his art on the Internet," according to a statement released on Prince's behalf.Meaning, Prince is feeling litigious. The Web-savvy artist, who was one of the first major recording stars to utilize the Internet to release new tunes and interact with fans, is planning to sue Google Inc.-owned YouTube, as well as alleged piracy-encouraging sites eBay and Pirate Bay, for copyright violation."Very few artists have ever taken this kind of action over their rights," the singer's spokesperson said. "Yet Prince has shown time and time again he is ready to challenge the system in new ways to put artists and music first."Gearing up to file suit in both the United States and the United Kingdom, Prince has hired British-based company Web Sheriff, which polices the Internet for pirated content and sends "take down" notices to offenders, to aid in th... Google's Secret Society
2007-08-31 21:12:00 Who's the Googl e of social networking sites? The obvious answer may seem to be Facebook, given its rapid growth, successful cooperation with application developers, and ever-smarter ad targeting. But by some measures, the real answer is even more obvious: Google itself. This week, Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) is drawing attention to its often-ignored social networking site, Orkut.com, with a redesign intended to prettify the site's Spartan look. And attention is deserved: Despite its low profile in the U.S., Orkut now draws 38.2 billion page views a month worldwide, 7.8 billion more than Facebook, according to comScore Media Metrix. In Brazil, where Facebook and MySpace are virtually unknown, Orkut has become a smash hit, with 15.6 billion page views monthly, by the count of Nielsen/Net Ratings. That kind of popularity doesn't just dwarf Facebook's Brazilian traffic, which is practically nil; it's also nearly 10 billion more monthly page views than Facebook draws from A... Vista SP1: To Wait, or Not?
2007-08-31 21:11:00 Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is expected to release in early 2008, but Microsoft already is telling customers not to wait for it. Should they listen?Today, Microsoft released a Vista white paper offering some details about SP1. Microsoft recommends that "organizations do not need to wait for SP1 to deploy Windows Vista; they are encouraged to begin their Windows Vista evaluation and deployment now."The service pack isn't necessarily reason to hold off Vista testing or deployments, even though businesses often use the first update as such a measure."Service packs are a little less important than they were, because Microsoft is more proficient [in delivering updates] in other ways," said Michael Silver, research vice president for Gartner Client Computing. For example, Microsoft has used Windows Update as a mechanism to push out ongoing updates, including two hefty ones yesterday. But the newest Windows Server 2008 delay is a mitigating circumstance that could make enterprise upgrade ... Want a job at Google? Try these brainteasers first
2007-08-31 21:10:00 Google, Microsoft, and eBay are looking for engineers who can think on their feet. Here's how they find them.Dream of landing a coding job at an A-list tech company? It might be a good idea to prep for your interviews by pondering how many golf balls can fit inside a school bus. Or how much you would charge for washing all the windows in Seattle. Or why, exactly, manhole covers are round and not, say, square.Seemingly random questions like these have become commonplace in Silicon Valley and other tech outposts, where companies aren't as interested in the correct answer to a tough question as they are in how a prospective employee might try to solve it. Since businesses today have to be able to react quickly to shifting market dynamics, they want more than engineers with high IQs and good college transcripts. They want people who can think on their feet.job_interview.03.jpgshrunk_trapped.0 3.jpgwindows_seattle.03.jpgMore from Business 2.0Job interview brainteasersNew star rises from... "It's small enough to check on an airplane or fit next to a desk," said Brom. Instead of a bunch of researchers having to share a single Beowulf cluster supercomputer, now each researcher can have their own. More About: Student , Budget , Build , Supercomputer , Fess

Windows Server Update Delayed Again
2007-08-31 21:01:00 Microsoft Wednesday again delayed the release of Windows Serve r 2008, saying development of the software could take as long as another three months beyond its previously planned December release. The new plan calls for the server to be released to manufacturing (RTM) between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2008. RTM means the software's development is complete and the bits are ready to be pressed onto distribution media. The delay, which is being blamed on the need for more testing, means the server possibly won't be ready for the "launch event" in Los Angeles on Feb. 27 that Microsoft is hyping. The event features Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Ironically, the server delay may mean Microsoft has nothing to launch that day. SQL Server 2008 is slated to ship between April 1 and June 30, 2008, and Visual Studio 2008 is targeted for release at the end of 2007. Microsoft said it will not cancel the event, which includes customers and partners."My conversation with the... More About: Update
IBM claims double computer technology breakthrough
2007-08-31 21:00:00 Multinational computer technology company IBM has this week revealed a duo of technological breakthroughs that could eventually lead to the creation of ultra-tiny storage devices while also potentially leading to extremely small and super-quick microchips.Concentrating first on the former, IBM scientists Cyrus Hirjibehedin and Andreas Heinrich, working out of IBM?s Almaden Research facility in California, have made an atom-based discovery while studying what?s known as magnetic anisotropy. The breakthrough, if followed to the proposed conclusion, could eventually lead to consumers carrying around literally tens of thousands of music, movie, and other media files in a device no bigger than a mobile phone.By figuring out how to direct a singular iron atom on a copper surface, the scientists believe they should be able to use the principle in order to help develop the minuscule building blocks necessary to create data storage devices significantly smaller than current technology allows... 2007-08-31 20:52:00 When I tried to motivate some of my close friends to blog and earn in their spare time, the first question all of them asked was, "What to blog about?".Though I found the question as not very intelligent, I don't blame them. Initially, most of the bloggers will be dazed when they enter blogopshere. Not everyone is fully well versed with internet marketing. For such newbies who don't have a clue to what to write in their blogs, here is an excellent blog post that I read just now. It is titled ?23 Great Ideas For Blog Posts? The author of the blog is Pat B. Doyle.I like to point out one of the 23 points."Take something that is controversial and tell how you feel about it. Just be careful to be respectful to both sides. You don?t want it to turn into a flame war. Besides, it is just more professional to state your opinion in a calm, objective way."Pay him a visit. In China, a high-tech plan to track people
2007-08-12 17:40:00 SHENZHEN, China -- At least 20,000 police surveillance cameras are being installed along streets here in southern China and will soon be guided by sophisticated computer software from an American-financed company to recognize automatically the faces of police suspects and detect unusual activity.Starting this month in a port neighborhood and then spreading across Shenzhen, a city of 12.4 million people, residency cards fitted with powerful computer chips programmed by the same company will be issued to most citizens.Data on the chip will include not just the citizen's name and address but also work history, educational background, religion, ethnicity, police record, medical insurance status and landlord's phone number. Even personal reproductive history will be included, for enforcement of China's controversial "one child" policy. Plans are being studied to add credit histories, subway travel payments and small purchases charged to the card.Security experts describe China's plans... More About: People , High Tech , Tech , High
New Razr 2: First Impressions
2007-08-12 17:37:00 Motorola today lifted the wraps from four carrier-specific models of the successor to its hugely popular Razr flip phone. Here's the scoop, along with my first impressions of some sample Razr 2s we received.All-tel, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon versions of the Razr 2 should all be available shortly, and aside from their network support, they'll be differentiated primarily by the three applications you'll be able to run--without even opening the phone--by touching your fingertip to on-screen buttons on an exceptionally large (2 inches) and sharp (QVGA) external color screen. The cool factor here: Those two-dimensional buttons provide tactile feedback thanks to haptics technology that makes them vibrate briefly when you touch them.Razr 2 V9m front for web.jpgThe Razr 2 actually will come in three hardware flavors. The V9 will support AT&T's super-fact HSDPA network (where available); the V9m (shown above) will support the Alltel/Sprint/Verizon counterpart wireless broadband technology... Apple Beats Microsoft at its Own Open XML Game
2007-08-12 17:36:00 Apple Inc.'s release of iWork '08 this week is "embarrassing," an analyst said Friday, not for its maker, but for Apple's rival, Microsoft Corp.Tuesday, Apple rolled out a refreshed iWork that added a spreadsheet, dubbed Numbers, to the earlier mix of a word processor/page layout Pages and presentation maker Keynote. But it was iWork's ability to handle the Open XML file format -- the new native format for Microsoft's own Office 2007 application suite -- that Michael Gartenberg of JupiterResearch talked about."This was the ultimate insult to injury," Gartenberg said. "Not only has Microsoft not delivered the ability to read and write Open XML in its Mac Office, but at the end of the day, Apple was the one who delivered."Gartenberg referred to Microsoft's problems developing Office 2008 for Mac, which the company announced last week would be delayed until mid-January. Among the roadblocks, said Microsoft's Macintosh Business Unit (MBU), is the shift to Open XML as Office 2008... More About: Apple , Game , Beats

What Will Windows 7 Look Like?
More articles from this author:2007-07-28 16:53:00 By now, everyone has heard how Microsoft Corp. plans to release the next Windows client OS, Windows 7 , in 2010. But what the company is not making clear is what new features the OS will have, a topic that has become fodder for educated speculation.Analysts said Microsoft probably is keeping tight-lipped about what Windows 7 will look like because at this point, company engineers and executives don't even know."They don't want to commit because they don't have a good idea what's in it," said Michael Silver, an analyst with Gartner Inc. "We're three years out, so you can't really expect that much detail."Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, said with so many people still in the midst of upgrading to the latest client OS, Windows Vista, he's hesitant to speculate on what might be in the next OS. "We barely know the features of the one we just got," he said with a laugh. That said, Cherry is expecting less "earth-shattering" new features than improvements on so...
