YouTube to Implement New Technology Against Copyright Infringement
2007-07-28 16:51:00 YouTube, owned by Google Inc., is working "very intensely" on the technology and hopes to have it in place in September, lawyer Philip S. Beck told a federal judge in Manhattan who is presiding over copyright lawsuits.Viacom International Inc. and England's top soccer league and an indie music publisher ? The Football Association Premier League Ltd. and publisher Bourne Co. ? have sued YouTube. The lawsuits have been combined for trial purposes. The video recognition technology will allow those holding copyrights on videos to provide a digital fingerprint, so that if anyone tries to share a copyrighted video, the system will shut it down within a minute or so, Beck said in court Friday.Beck said the company was counting on the software to "hopefully eliminate such disputes in the future." He said the company believes the new technology goes way beyond what the law requires to stop copyright infringement.YouTube began only two years ago, when one of its two California founders sought... Wikipedia's founder builds an open-source search engine
2007-07-28 16:49:00 Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, announced today that his for-profit community hosting site Wikia has deepened its investment in developing an open-source Web search engine. Wikia purchased Grub, a company that makes distributed a Web crawling program. Instead of having a single set of computers index the Web -- as Google and other search engines do -- Grub passes out the indexing work to computers across the globe. You can download the Grub client to make your own computer pitch in on the indexing work. While you're not using it, the machine will scan the Web and send back its index to a central server; your scan, combined with input from others running the Grub client, will form the index that will power Wikia's open-source search engine.Wales, who was speaking at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention in Portland, Ore., announced that Wikia has turned Grub into an open-source program; the company hopes for input from developers all over the world.Unlike Wikipedia, Wikia'... Advanced Pay-Per-Click strategies
2007-07-28 16:46:00 There?s an interesting report available from morevisibility.com, written by their CTO Joe Laratro. The report is available through eMarketer FYI.The report is split up into Budget Strategies , Bidding Strategies, Keyword Strategies and Ad Copy Strategies. I?m going to go over a few below. In Budgeting Strategies Joe covers Day Parting, where you might want to change bid strategies throughout the day and possibly turn off bids at different times of the day, and Day Excluding, where you may want to turn off your campaign during certain days or even seasons.Beginners might want to take a look at Bidding Strategies, where Joe puts into words the typical strategies people use intuitively, including Maximum Cost-Per-Click (self-explanatory), and Bid to ROI, where bids can automatically be adjusted based on pre-defined performance metrics. I liked Maximize Clicks for the Given Spend - If the daily budget is stable and being reached every day, a very quick optimization technique would be to l... Another stupid idea from Google - video ads
2007-07-28 16:43:00 I?ve said it a gajillion times, and I?m going to say it again?there are a thousand eggheads out there in Santa Clara, and this is the best they can come up with?In case you haven?t heard, Google is going to offer a Pay-Per-Click video ad product. They?re going to run it through AdSense and we can?t opt out ? we?re going to get video ads whether we like them or not.I think video ads are a dumb idea. Mook-Jon thinks they?re only going to annoy people, like the banner ads that make noise. I think he?s right. In fact, I agree completely with Michael Arrington at TechCrunch. Here?s what he says:1. Google?s not putting these ads on its own sites. As Michael says, Google needs to eat its own dogfood. If we have to, they have to.2. You can?t tie a video click to something else that measures ROI. I think this is very significant. Clicking on a video won?t take you to another web site where you can take some sort of action that can be measured. It?s just video.3. Normal TV ads are plentiful an... More About: Video , Google Video , Stupid , Idea
Increase Traffic
2007-07-28 16:39:00 Regarding traffic I am publishing my 3rd post today. But I think this must come first.1. CONTENT - Whenever think on traffic, think about the CONTENT first. External link define the blog/site that are linking to your blog/site.4. UPDATE - Update your blog/site regularly. Otherwise people will not come to your blog/site.5. RESPONSE - Respond to the posts and e-mails sent by your viewers. Begin your day with checking e-mails and posts and respond to them as quick as possible.6. EASE OF USE - You must use common layouts, characteristics, terminology in your blog/site. It will help the vistors to u... More About: Increase Traffic , Money , Traffic , Tricks , Ease
The minimum wage is now $5.85/hr, but what?s the point?
2007-07-28 08:04:00 This week, the first of three annual increases of the federal minimum wage went into effect. It increased seventy cents to $5.85 per hour, the first increase in a decade. One of every forty hourly workers earns this wage, or about 1.9 million workers. The median age is a little less than 25 years old. (More statistics are available here.)These 1.9 million workers are the ones most likely to feel any effects of the minimum wage increase, since their employers are now required to pony up the most extra for them. I have anecdotal evidence (through an acquaintance of my wife) that some are being let go prior to the wage increase. It will likely send quite a few more employees of businesses marginally able to support them packing. For those who do depend on these wages for food and rent, though, does it make a big difference? Assuming that the workers keep their jobs and hours, it makes some difference, but probably not enough to alleviate basic needs. Barbara Ehrenreich?s Nickel ... It?s another easy way to make some extra money with your website or your blog (beside AdSense). Microsoft Introduces "Tabletop" PC
2007-07-28 07:49:00 As computing devices get smaller and smaller, Microsoft is bucking the trend with its Microsoft Surface "tabletop" PC, code-named "Milan." The device, about the size of a small desk, allows the user to draw and write on the surface with a brush or fingers. Instead of using a mouse or keyboard, the user manipulates digital elements on the surface with his or her hands. The first of the Milan devices will be shipped to corporate customers to be used as kiosks... providing Milan with crucial exposure while allowing Microsoft to work out any kinks before offering surface computing to home and office users. At any rate, the average consumer will be forgiven for not pouncing on the first available units, which cost approximately $10,000 each. More About: Education , Intro

Living - Global Warming
2007-07-28 07:46:00 According to research at Princeton, current technologies are capable of stopping (or at least slowing) the rate of global warming by 2050 if properly applied. Using a mix-and-match approach, students who participated in a game-like experiment found that the current portfolio of energy-saving policies and technologies (flourescent bulbs, nuclear power, wind turbines, reducing deforestation, etc.) could indeed keep global greenhouse gases constant over the next 50 years. The trick is to apply these solutions to developing countries, where rapid industrial growth will put them on track to overtake the developed world in greenhouse gas output within the next several decades.Meanwhile, Live Science has a top-10 list of side effects of global warming, such as more severe allergies, more sinkholes from permafrost melting, a less dense upper atmosphere that will affect how satellites orbit the earth, more forest fires and rapid deterioration of ancient ruins. Perhaps the strangest predictio... More About: Global Warming , Education , Living , Global , Ving
The Apple iPhone?
2007-07-28 07:43:00 The iPhone, released to the public last Friday, is one of the most hyped devices in memory. But is all the excitement justified?John McCormick of Baseline suggests that the iPhone could blow the market for handheld rich Internet applications wide open, even though the iPhone was designed for the consumer rather than the enterprise market. Om Malik concurs, noting the significance of the built-in Safari browser that brings the full Web experience to mobile phones for the first time. Smart Mobs opines that mobile phones (not just the iPhone) represent a mass medium unto themselves that are revolutionizing the fundamental ways in which we communicate. High court asks DU to reserve seats for disabled
2007-07-28 07:40:00 New Delhi: In an effort to provide equal status to the physically challenged candidates in educational institutions, the Delhi High Court has directed Delhi University (DU) to reserve seats for physically challenged students in Health Care Administration course under the management studies program. The verdict was given by Justice B D Ahmed who disposed the petition filed by Poonam, who was denied admission for the course under the physically handicapped (PH) category. The varsity denied her admission on the grounds that her application form did not mention anything under the handicapped category. The verdict says that: "In future, the University shall reserve at least one seat and carry out the mandate prescribed under the DU guidelines." The Court, however, did not allow Poonam to secure admission in the three-year course for the academic session 2007-2010, saying that she did not approach the court 'on time'. The World?s Richest Man Doesn?t Care for the ?World?s Richest? Title
2007-07-17 09:39:00 After 13 years of being labeled ?the world?s richest person?, Bill Gates has now lost the title to Carlos Slim whose net worth is said to be $67.8 billion. The turnabout is a result of the 27 percent rise in stock price from Slim?s wireless company, American Movil. But, it appears that Bill Gates will not be totally saddened by this news. When he attended a Microsoft conference in Redmond last year, he was asked by TV host, Donny Deutsch, if he would be upset if someday he were no longer the world?s richest man.?I wish I wasn?t,? Gates replied. ?There?s nothing good that comes out of that.??It?s better than being second,? Deutsch said.?No,? Gates replied. ?You get more visibility as a result of it.?So, perhaps Gates doesn?t appreciate the spotlight and will be relieved to hand it over to Slim. Gates estimated wealth is currently worth around $59.2 billion. He has put more than $30 billion into the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which of course, has reduced his personal net worth.Sl... Pay Per Digg Sites - How Effective Are They?
2007-07-17 09:34:00 As long as Digg exist, a lot of people will (try to) game it. That's not surprising because Digg generates thousands of visits to a story that hits its front page, but unfortunately, it's hard to get there. Due to that fact, a lot of people are willing to use underhanded techniques to get to the front page, like paying for diggs and directly violating Digg's TOS. Pay Per Digg sites emerged on the internet few months before the end of 2006 and got a few stories dugg to the front page, but they also caused a huge number of Digg accounts being banned! Here they are:User / SubmitterThis very plain looking site offered its clients a place on the Digg's front page for only $21 - not bad for several thousands of visitors. Should Cost-Per-Click (CPC) AdSense Earners Worries about The Google's New
2007-07-06 21:41:00 I finally understand how the Google's CPA programs will work on AdSense publishers after reading the latest announcement of their launch of AdSense Referrals 2.0. The CPA program will only affect CPC AdSense earners slightly in the future because the CPA program has placed under the referral section. AdSense publishers can choose not to display Google CPA ads and continue enjoying pay-per-click earning.Advertisers like CPA advertising most because they pay for the ads only when a sale or other actions specified by them occur. But unfortunately, they wouldn't get the traffic they expected (possibly getting little traffic only) from CPA advertising since AdSense publishers can choose not to display their ads and send visitors to them. So most AdSense publishers in niches that work poor in CPA programs will not use the CPA ads, they want to continue earning steady income with Adsense CPC ads. And thus advertisers in those niches who want to gain consistent paid traffic from Google st... More About: News , Money , Click , Cost
Sun to blame for dropped cellphone calls
2007-07-06 21:40:00 Next time your cellphone drops a call, don't blame the pesky elevator or subway -- blame the sun.A Queen's University study, set to be published in an upcoming edition of the international journal, Proceedings of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), has found solar flares are likely to blame for cellphones losing their signal. The flares, radio-frequency energy bursts emitting from the sun, have a negative impact on cellphones when their host tower's antennae is facing the sun.The findings show between nine and 20 per cent of calls have been dropped because of the correlation."We believe that this is caused by the Sun radiating energy into the Earth's magnetic field," said Queen's professor Dr. David Thomson in a press release issued by the university in Kingston, Ont."It's one of those things that people look at and say, 'It can't possibly be,' but a lot of experts have now given a thumbs-up to this theory."Thomson began studying communications sate...
