2007-10-23 19:14:00 Donegan, from Heavy Reading commented as follows:"This marks a departure for Cisco into the outdoor radio networking environment," says Donegan. "In the initial stages, the company is likely to find it tough going against the likes of Motorola and Nortel that have been players in outdoor radio networking going back twenty years or more.""RF in outdoor environments is a black art," says Donegan. "Navini gives them some of skill sets needed to become practitioners in that black art but they will need a lot more."Cisco says it plans to integrate Navini into its wireless networking business unit in the Ethernet and wireless technology group. "We can make money on a €300 phone, a €150 phone, or a €30 phone, and nobody else has been able to do that last part," says Rick Simonson, Nokia's chief financial officer in an interview. "Even when we are selling a €30 device, we are making gross margins in the high 20% range," he says.

PVCS: Positive outlook on solar semi
2007-09-12 00:12:00 From today's Interim Results:Outlook PV Crystalox Solar continues to make progress in discussions with customers interms of negotiating longer term contracts and expects to announce definitive agreements before the year end.Additional polysilicon from existing contracts started to be delivered in July, bringing the total expected quantity of polysilicon to 1,280 MT for 2007. Supplyof scrap silicon has tightened during the second half of 2007 and is beingpartially offset by increased levels of recycling. As a result we expect to be alittle below our targets for overall sourcing of feedstock in 2007. However, higher wafer prices have compensated and are expected to continue to compensatefor this effect and the Company anticipates that this position will continue forat least the remainder of 2007. Accordingly, we are confident about the outlookfor the full year 2007.Generally the generation of solar electricity is becoming increasingly importantthroughout the world; with the world market... Triquint acquires Peak Devices for 15M USD in cash
2007-08-28 00:45:00 Interesting news on consolidation in the RF space..RFMD strikes, Triquint replies (on a smaller scale)..--------------------------------- -------------------Oregon's TriQuint Semiconductor is set to acquire the fabless RF transistor supplier Peak Devices for $15 million in cash. Based in Boulder, Colorado, Peak currently has just sixteen employees, ten of whom are experienced RF engineers, and registered sales of $2.6 million in the first half of 2007. Peak designs and sells a variety of silicon-based RF semiconductors for applications in broadcasting, wireless networks and defense. Its product lines include transistors previously supplied by Agere Systems, Infineon and Avnet. While those sales will add immediately to TriQuint's revenue, and also help to top up profits, TriQuint CEO Ralph Quinsey placed more emphasis on a proprietary semiconductor technology that Peak's engineers have developed more recently. Called "WiMOS", this wide-bandwidth design is said to allow a single... More About: Cash

Good news for 2H, end of a bloody semi cycle?
2007-08-20 21:45:00 Analysts at JP Morgan say that the performance of the European semiconductors industry is likely to be healthy in 2H.In a research note published this morning, the analysts mention that inventories in the sector have been worked out. The cycle in the industry bottomed out in 2Q, the analysts add. These two factors should give enough reason for the industry to ramp up production in 2H and ASML and Infineon continue to be the "top picks" in the sector, JP Morgan says.[newratings.com] More About: News , Cycle , Good News , Semi , Good

Belkin already has a hub in the US, while camera and printer manufacturers are keen to add wireless connectivity to their devices. The official Ofcom document is here.“Where possible, we want to remove restrictions on the use of spectrum to allow the market to develop new and innovative services, such as UWB,” said Ofcom’s chief executive, Ed Richards. Nokia new IC strategy: licensing and preferred suppliers by technology
2007-08-08 19:32:00 Nokia will however continue to develop its leading modem technology, which includes protocol software and related digital design for WCDMA/GSM and its evolution. Nokia will then license this modem technology to its chipset manufacturers, who will use it in the chipsets they develop and produce for Nokia and - if they so decide - in the chipsets they produce for the open market.Based on this renewed strategy, Nokia is now working with four chipset suppliers.Texas Instruments continues to be a broad scope supplier across all protocols;Broadcom has been chosen as a supplier in EDGE;Infineon Technologies as a supplier in GSM;STMicroelectronics as a supplier in 3G.Nokia press release is hereBroadcom press release on the BCM21331 EDGE platform ("Venus") is hereSTMicroelectronics press release about the transferring of a part of Nokia’s Integrated Circuit (IC) operations to STMicroelectronics is here More About: Technology , Nokia , Strategy , Suppliers , Licensing

How Infineon will get rid of Qimonda: Fast Track
2007-08-07 00:01:00 Business & Financial Press August 6, 2007 Neubiberg, Germany – August 6, 2007 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX) further specified the divestiture of its interest in Qimonda. Accordingly, Infineon aims to reduce its stake in Qimonda to significantly below 50 per cent not later than by the Annual Shareholder Meeting 2009. The company will continue executing its strategy to reduce its stake through secondary offerings and other capital markets measures. Any cash inflow from such sales is to be used for selective acquisitions to strengthen Infineon's business or to repurchase Infineon shares. The plan also envisages taking all necessary measures at the Annual Shareholder Meeting 2008 required to enable distribution of Qimonda shares as a dividend in kind to Infineon shareholders. Such a dividend would then be possible after the Annual Shareholder Meeting 2009."Carving-out and listing our memory business last year effectiv... More About: Fast , Track

Google in talks with mobile operators worldwide
2007-08-02 19:00:00 NEW YORK (Reuters) - Google Inc. has approached wireless phone operators and handset makers as it looks for a piece of the market for advertisements on cellphones, the Wall Street Journal said on its Web site on Thursday."For wireless operators, the plans are a double-edged sword. Google's powerful brand and its popular Web services could help operators sign up more subscribers to data packages, on which they increasingly rely as voice revenue declines. However, operators have been wary about losing control over the mobile-ad market.""In recent months Google has rolled out mobile versions of products such as the YouTube video-sharing site. It has made deals to include its search engine or applications such as Google Maps and Gmail on select handsets. But the company has sometimes been frustrated at the limited distribution it has achieved. In some cases, Google has managed to get around operators. Its 411 location search service can be accessed by dialing an 800 number from any han... More About: Mobile , Operators , Worldwide , Bile |
