Sony Clie PEG-TJ25 Handheld
2007-09-06 03:47:00
Sony Clie PEG-TJ25 Handheld The PEG-TJ25 is one of two new midlevel Sony CLIEs. The handheld is attractively designed, runs the latest Palm operating system, has a high-resolution color display, and ships with a decent software bundle. But while the TJ25 and the impressive $200 Palm Tungsten E seem pretty evenly matched on paper, the Sony offers a less vibrant screen, slower performance, and a dearth of multimedia capabilities--for the identical price. If you must have a CLIE, upgrade to the $250 PEG-TJ35, which doubles the TJ25's memory and adds a headphone jack for audio playback. Design of Sony CLIE PEG-TJ25 Housed in an attractive silver casing, the TJ25 measures a fairly typical 4.38 by 3 by 0.47 inches and weighs 4.9 ounces. We liked the jog dial of the previous CLIEs, but Sony has replaced it with a depressible barrel roller located directly beneath the screen between the ...

Sony PEG-N760C Clie Handheld
2007-09-06 00:38:00
Sony PEG-N760C Clie Handheld Sony's Clié N760C combines the best of a Palm OS handheld computer and an MP3 player. Bulkier than your average audio player, it still manages to be sleek enough that you'd consider taking it out just for music-listening purposes. And you'll have all your typical Palm applications at the tip of your stylus, including your address book, to-do list, and e-mail. Rather than CompactFlash or SmartMedia, the Clié N760C uses Sony's own Memory Stick cards for expanding memory. While more expensive than other forms of media, they can be used in a variety of Sony devices, from MP3 players to digital cameras. If you're a Sony aficionado and already have other Sony peripherals, it won't be a tough transition to the Clié. Unfortunately, while the costs of SmartMedia and CompactFlash cards have dropped recently, proprietary Sony Memory Sticks have stayed much higher. Although the N760C ships with only a total 16 MB memory (8 MB internal memory and 8 MB via a Memo...

Sony Clie PEG-NX73V Handheld
2007-09-05 22:51:00
Sony Clie PEG-NX73V Handheld Design of Sony CLIE PEG-NX73V Cosmetically, the most notable and obvious difference between this model and the NX70V is the color; this guy is black instead of silver, which we like. Sony also offers a backlit keyboard for nighttime note-taking and a spring-loaded CompactFlash expansion slot that opens and closes like a cassette deck on a boombox. The advantage to this design is that the slot is hidden and covered when not occupied by a card. Better yet, the NX73V now accepts certain manufacturers' CompactFlash cards, including those made by Lexar and SanDisk, not just Sony's Wi-Fi PEG-WL100 data radio. Therefore, you can now use both a CompactFlash card and a Memory Stick or a Memory Stick Pro at the same time--finally breaking a Sony taboo. A few other improvements are based on Sony's user (and editorial) feedback. First, the swivel screen has been reinforced a bit. Hopefully, this new hinge will be less prone to damage than that o...

Accessing the Internet Using your PDA
2007-09-04 20:34:00
Accessing the Internet Using your PDANote that this article covers wireless solutions, both WAN (wide area networking) and LAN (local area networking). It doesn't cover using a 56k dialup modem over a land line (that's the phone cord that plugs into the wall). There are several solutions for dialup, including Palm's modem for many PalmOne brand PDAs, CF modem cards for Pocket PCs (and the Sony Clié NX & NZ PDAs using special drivers) and external modems that connect to your PDA using Bluetooth or IR (see the ENR Tech IR and Bluetooth modem reviews). There are many ways to connect to the Internet for web browsing and email. There are two kinds of solutions:1) Wide area networking (WAN), which means accessing the Internet from most anywhere in the metropolitan US by connecting to cellular or pager networks and paying the provider a fee for either time spent online or the amount of data downloaded.2) Local area networking (LAN) which allows you to connect to the Internet only when yo...

WiFi (802.11b/g) Networking for your PDA and Smartphone
2007-09-04 20:28:00
WiFi (802.11b/g) Networking for your PDA and Smartphone Local area wireless networking, generally in the form of WiFi (also known as 802.11b and 802.11g) is a hot topic. Companies, universities and home users are setting up wireless access points and running notebook computers without network wires. Even Starbucks, other coffee houses, airports, hotels and some small towns are installing WiFi for visitors. 80211hotspots.com has a listing of many sites around the US where you can access public wireless networks. So why not go wireless with your PDA? It makes perfect sense to free the most portable of all computers from wires. All you need is a fast Internet connection (DSL, cable model or wired Ethernet) and a WiFi access point to get started. Many PDAs and notebooks come with built-in WiFi, and if not, you can always buy an add-on card. What is WiFi? WiFi is the "friendly" term for the 802.11b (as well as 802.11a and 802.11g) Ethernet standard. It's the cousin to standard 802.11 wire...

Bluetooth Networking for your Palm, Pocket PC and Computer
2007-09-04 20:22:00
Bluetooth Networking for your Palm , Pocket PC and Computer Forgive the pun, but with all the folks having trouble getting Bluetooth up and running, I was expecting to turn blue in the face evaluating these products. But happily, things went smoothly, and I was able to print, sync to my desktop, connect and dial using a BT phone, and transfer files to other PDAs. Different products have different configuration concepts and methods, and some user interfaces aren't the most friendly, and those were the only real challenges I faced. This is different from setting up WiFi/802.11b, where all the TCP/IP and encryption settings and concepts are fairly standardized and hence similar across brands and even platforms. Access points are the once exception, and are configured in a similar fashion to WiFi access points. But have no fear, all product reviews cover setup and use in detail! What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth is a wireless Personal Area Networking (PAN) technology that allows devices to con...

Mac FAQ
2007-09-04 20:12:00
Mac FAQWhich PDAs Play Nice with the Mac? OK, I'm a Mac addict, and started my career in high tech as a Mac developer back in the days when the Mac Plus was state of the art. I've come a long way since then, and so have Macs! And as much I adored the once venerable Newton, PDAs have evolved into complex little beasts who may or may not want to make nice with your Mac.PDAs that Sync to both Mac OS and Windows PCs Out of the BoxWith the exception of the Sony Clié line, all Palm OS PDAs come with Palm Desktop for Mac as well as Windows in the box. Even Palm OS Smartphones like the Kyocera 6035 can sync to the Mac, though you'll have to download Palm Desktop for free from Palm's web site. Palm Desktop is the software that runs on your Mac and serves as an address book, calendar, tasks manager and notes app all in one. It's also what syncs with your Palm OS PDA. Just plug in the USB cradle or use IR or Bluetooth if you have it on your Mac and Palm, and you can sync, install apps and...
Palm vs. Pocket PC : which one is for you
2007-09-04 20:07:00
Palm vs. Pocket PC: which one is for you?Folks often write to us asking which they should choose, a Palm OS PDA or a Pocket PC. I'm not going to tell you that one is better than another, they each have their strengths, and after all, I'm a PDA geek-- I love them all. Instead I'm going to outline several key considerations that usually help folks decide which will suit their needs. Palm OS PDAs are made by Palm, Sony and Handspring, though Palm bought Handspring in 2003, and the Treo 600 Palm OS smartphone was Handspring's only product at that time. Pocket PCs are made by many companies, including HP, Toshiba, Dell and ViewSonic.1. Price. Palm OS devices tend to be cheaper than Pocket PCs, unless you want the Palm Tungsten C or the Sony Clié UX50 which are fairly expensive. Though there are now a couple of entry level Pocket PCs priced at $249 to $299. Palm OS devices run from $99 for the entry level Palm Zire 21 and $199 for the Sony Clié TJ27 to $599 for the Sony UX50 with lots...

Palm PDA Reviews and Information
2007-09-04 19:02:00
Palm PDA Reviews and Information What can I say about the Palm OS line when Palm's strong market share says it all? As the cliché goes, less is more, as the venerable, simple shows us. While there are PDAs which have more memory, processing power, and all sorts of other hardware features running on more complicated operating systems, the Palm excels because it offers a quick, simple and accessible interface in the smallest package. The Palms are the easiest PDAs to find in stores- just about everyone, including Office Depot, and consumer electronics stores seems to sell them and their large number of accessories. There are more shareware programs of all flavors for the Palm than one could possibly ever sample in a lifetime, and many shareware/download sites devoted wholly to all that great software. Check out palmgear.com and handango.com for starters! All Palms include calendar, notes, outline, calculator, mail and contacts programs which are launched by either pressing the appropri...

What is a PDA ?
2007-09-04 19:00:00
What does PDA stand for ? Personal Digital Assistant. A PDA is a computer that fits in the palm of your hand. Its main purpose is to carry your PIM (person information manager) applications and data: address book, calendar, notes and tasks. PDAs have been around for quite a few years now, and they can do much more than PIM functions these days. In fact you can use them to access the Internet for web browsing and email, work with MS Office documents, add on a GPS for navigation, play games, and some even double as phones (these are called smartphones) and have integrated digital cameras. There are two major breeds: Palm OS and Pocket PCs running the Windows Mobile OS. Palm OS PDAs are made by Palm and Sony. Handspring had been a big player but they were bought out by Palm and only the Palm name survives. Sony left the US handheld market in mid-2004 so their models won't be on retailers shelves by the end of 2005. Pocket PCs are made by many companies, including HP, Toshiba, Dell, AS...

There are many different types of PDAs, but most models work with either Palmtop software or a special version of Microsoft Windows called Windows Mobile. What is a Handheld Computer or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)?
2007-09-04 18:24:00
What is a Handheld Computer or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)? Here is a list of some of the key features: Handheld computers are low-cost ($100 to $400+) and highly mobile. Handheld computers possess an intuitive interface. Handheld computers have a touch-sensitive screen. Handheld computers are far more powerful than personal organizers! A handheld computer is a general-purpose computer, just like a PC, only smaller. Handheld computers support infrared (IR) beaming between units to exchange data and programs. This means that if 2 handheld computers are pointed toward each other and within a separation of 3 to 5 feet, then data can be transferred. This data could be an application program, note, phone number, address entry, database record, image, etc. Handheld computers use a stylus pen for input. Many applications require the user to tap on the screen with the stylus to select an input. Generally, text can be entered into a handheld on a...

Dell Axim X3 Pocket PC PDAWhen Dell rolled out their Axim X5 Pocket PC model last year it made big waves in the Pocket PC community because it offered a lot of bang for the buck. The price you paid was having to lug around a relatively large and bulky Pocket PC. Now Dell has an answer for those who wish to have a more svelte Pocket PC with a great feature set: the Axim X3 line. However, unlike the X5, the X3 doesn't have a CF slot. The X3 comes in three models: the Basic, Advanced and X3i which is the same as the Advanced model but adds WiFi 802.11b wireless networking. All feature replaceable batteries, an SD slot, fast processors and transflective displays. We received the X3i for review, and all comments are based on that model. ...
