Infineon Unveils New 3G Chipset, Ideal For Later iPhones

Infineon has unveiled a new 3G mobile chipset yesterday that will provide a significantly faster internet experience, which also would be a good candidate for a future version of the iPhone. It combines the XMM 6180 app processor and the X-GOLD 618 baseband chip. They claim it will be their first to provide support for full HSPA (wiki), and will reach download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps and unusually high upload speeds of up to 2.9Mbps. read more

Broadcom Secures 3G iPhone GPS Contract?

Broadcom has secured a contract with Apple to provide GPS to the 3G iPhone according to a Gigaom report.The report states that the 3G iPhone will have GPS because of legal requirements put in place by the FCC.According to Gigaom's sources, "the contract has been nailed down by Broadcom, a relatively new entrant into the GPS market. 3 To Bring iPhone To Hong Kong, Macau

Hutchison, parent company of wireless service provider 3, announced today that they two have signed a deal with Apple for the iPhone. The announcement adds Hong Kong and Macau to the list of 3G iPhone launch regions. Incidentally, this is the first Chinese-controlled territory to get an iPhone launch rumor since Apple ended talks with China Mobile back in November of last year. Hutchison didn't go into any specifics with the announcement, only saying that they would be offering it some time "later this year." [via Electronista]

3G iPhone Icon Found In SDK?

While clicking around on an older version f the iPhone SDK, a couple of users on the MacRumors Forums have stumbled on what they believe is a representation of the new 3G iPhone in the form of a small icon. Their argument is that the device shown in the icon looks different than some other iPhone icons in that location of the SDK, and that it looks similar to the descriptions of the new iPhone's appearance.

Turbo Grafix-16 Emulator Ported To iPhone

Another emulator has been added to the list of vintage game platforms for the iPhone. ZoTTD has ported temper, a Turbo Grafx-16 emulator to the iPhone and iPod touch. It's still a tad glitchy, but it's a good start. The new emulator brings several new games to the iPhone, including Bonk, which is featured in the video demo after the break.

You will no doubt be thrilled to hear about the latest developments in the mystical land of the iPhone SDK. The newest version, beta 6, hit the Apple Developer site today, concurrent with Apple’s release of 10.5.3. Good thing, too, since for unknown reasons, beta 6 of the SDK requires 10.5.3—it’s actually incompatible with any of the prior versions. As to what beta 6 brings your average developer, Apple is its own usual close-mouthed self: This release fixes many bugs and add support for the latest iPhone OS. Developers get a slightly more detailed list of changes to the API, which probably doesn’t mean much to you or I. More happy news for Mac users today comes from the awesome folks at Google . According to the Google Mac Blog, the latest Mac OS X Leopard update adds Google Contacts syncing support to the iPhone. The magic happens via the newly updated Address Book application. To enable, open Address Book and check out the "General" tab under preferences. There you'll find an option to sync your Google Contacts database with your beloved iPhone.

New SDK build and 2.0 beta firmware released

Yet another update to the iPhone firmware 2.0 and the SDK have leaked out. The new firmware has been dubbed 5a308. This build was released today, along with a fresh build of the SDK. The new SDK is 1221.8MB, so it is a little bigger than the last release, which was the fifth such release. It is not known yet if this is the firmware beta that adds the rumored geo tagging features. The firmware is fresh off the server, and the details about it are few. What we do know right now is that the new SDK requires developers to register an application ID, suggesting that they are tightening things up in anticipation of the launch, which is rumored to be soon. Application IDs are required for provisioning now, all previous provisioning is now longer valid. Another interesting thing is you must be running OSX 10.5.3, which was just released this morning.
