Apple Filming New iPhone Ad, Possibly Next Gen iPhone?

Gizmodo has word from who they claim is a reliable source that a new iPhone ad is being shot by a big name director today. The source said that the director is most likely Apple 's tradiitonal ad agency. Unfortunately, the source was unable to confirm if the ad was being shot for the current generation of iPhone or the 3G phone, but Gizmodo's guessing that if they are, it's for the next gen device, and I'm inclined to agree. Sadly those are all the details they provided. Hopefully this is a sign that preparations for the next gen iPhone launch are proceeding smoothly. [via Gizmodo]

Apple Canada Readying Itself for Unknown Event

Up in the frosty, moose-laden north, Apple Canada is apparently preparing some of its representatives for an upcoming event. According to Electronista, key staff have been asked to travel to the company's Markham, Ontario regional headquarters for discussions as to an unknown topic wherein requests for specifics have been declined.

AT&T Cites More Than 2.5 Million iPhone Subscribers, Hints at 3G iPhone

AT&T Chief Financial Officer Rick Lindner added to the 3G iPhone rumor mill at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit event in New York recently, citing more 2.5 million iPhone subscribers, each shelling out about $100 per month in fees. The executive then went on the mention he had seen a picture of the as-yet-unannounced next generation iPhone, stating "it's coming" without further details.

3G iPhone to Support Speeds Up To 42Mbps?

With a new iPhone rumored to be mere weeks away, it seems obvious that the most major improvement will be the addition of high-speed 3G capabilities. In the US, AT&T has recently announced that it intends to have its 3G network complete by June, coincidently just in time for WWDC. According to AT&T, theirs will be the only fully deployed HSPA data network in the US. However, high-speed data is a norm in many countries overseas. According to Channel News, Australia will have the fastest iPhone offering available, capable of speeds up to 42Mbps by Christmas.

3G iPhone to support HSPA+?

The 3G iPhone will be fast, especially on overseas networks where 7.2mbps HSDPA is common. Unfortunately for us in the U.S AT&T has no HSDPA faster than 3.6mbps, but 7.2mbps HSDPA is on their to do list. HSPA in its current form is tops out at 14.4mbps/5.76mbps up/down respectively. Furthermore, the highest speed most devices support is 7.2mbps. HSPA+, also known as HSPA Evolution, or HSPA Evolved, is set to increase speeds significantly. It supports 42mbps/22mbps up/down respectively. To my knowledge, there are currently no HSPA+ devices on the market. Unless one comes out in the next 17 days, then it looks like if this did turn out to be true, then the 3G iPhone would be the first HSPA+ device on the market. For us, this would not do any good for quite a while. Telstra, down in Australia, might be able to take advantage of it though. Here's a fun one. Apparently someone at AT&T checked the wrong box when Brett of TUAW ordered his refurbished iPhone. Instead of sending him his 16GB iPhone when he placed the order, they sent him two instead, and charged him for both. To top things off, the next day he was sent an empty box with a plastic bag in it, with an invoice for "75011 MISC iPhone PPA BAG ... $0.00." Seriously, AT&T. What's that about? [via TUAW]

Up until recently, iPhone owners wanting to listen to music in their car have had to rely on the standard technologies (raido, CD players, iPods, etc). Thankfully that has come to an end, as Griffin has claimed the #1 spot as the first company to release an iPhone-compatable device for your car's stereo. Lines Already For iPhone 2.0?

Blogger Jon Accarrino of Methodshop reports that lines are already forming in NYC for iPhone 2.0, which is rumored to be launched on June 9 (the first day of Apple’s WWDC and Steve Jobs’ opening speech). Jon went by Apple’s 5th Avenue store this morning and found a line of about 50 people all waiting for iPhones — or so retail staffers told him. Jon thinks the liner-uppers are already waiting up for the new iPhone. Noting that many in line are Asian, Jon speculates they are from NYC’s Chinatown, and are being paid to wait in line. But I find it hard to believe that people are willing to pay a line-sitter for two weeks or more — especially when there’s no indication there will shortages, which prompted the lines first time around. A few more interesting job opportunities at Apple have popped up today that hint at a few new features that Apple is considering for a future iPhone. One job opening for the position of iPhone Product Design Engineer lists one of the preferred areas of experience as "Integration of wireless antenna (GSM, GPS, Wi-Fi) into mechanical enclosures." This seems to be a pretty conclusive sign that Apple is at least considering GPS for the iPhone somewhere down the line.

Of all the wacky things that could happen today, Engadget is reporting that a line has formed around the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York. You know, the giant glass cube that's open 24 hours a day? What are they in line for? Rumor has it that they're waiting in line for the iPhone, but some aren't as sure about what they're waiting for. Some think they're waiting for the current gen iPhone, while others believe they're camping out for iPhone 2.0.

It’s beginning to look a lot like…Soviet Russia. According to some of Engadget’s informants, a line has formed at the 24/7 Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City. The purpose of the line? Nobody quite seems sure. Apple reps apparently say that they’re controlling the crowd of iPhone purchasers, while some people in the line appear to be under the impression that they’ve lined up for the as-of-yet-nonexistent 3G iPhone. Reputedly, yet another group of people says that they just like joining lines. Perian is an expansion to Quicktime that lets it play numerous other video codecs, like FLV or DivX files. Whoever made this app is a genius! Pre-release iPhone firmware 2.0 adds Geo-Tagging to Photos

Apple has released the iPhone SDK Beta 6 (5A292G) making it the fifth release since iPhone SDK was released in March. The details of other four beta versions are available here, here, here and here. Apple has been quitely rolling out some interesting new features with each beta release of their iPhone SDK. The latest pre-release version of iPhone firmware 2.0 included with SDK has added geo-tagging to the Camera application feature.

‘Enable 3G’ Preference Not Fake

Ok, you'll want to sit down for this because it's a little bit ridiculous. So there has been some talk flying around the web about that 3G preferences screenshot. The people who posted the information on the site that was tipped to MacRumors recently posted a disclaimer saying that the screenshot was a photoshop mockup constructed from the current firmware showing what it probably looks like, and that they absolutely did not leak an actual screenshot from firmware 2.0. They also note that anything they said was said previous to being accepted to the iPhone Developer Program.

Yes, we know. You're tired of 3G iPhone launch date rumors. We are too, but InfoSync thinks they really have it. They claim to have information from an (allegedly reliable) anonymous source stating that the 3G iPhone will be launched at WWDC on June 9th, as suspected. However, their source also stated that the device would not go on sale immediately, but would instead go on sale "about a week and a half later", somewhere around June 18th or 19th.
