Apple Filming New iPhone Ad, Possibly Next Gen iPhone?
2008-05-23 20:22:00 Gizmodo has word from who they claim is a reliable source that a new iPhone ad is being shot by a big name director today. The source said that the director is most likely Apple 's tradiitonal ad agency. Unfortunately, the source was unable to confirm if the ad was being shot for the current generation of iPhone or the 3G phone, but Gizmodo's guessing that if they are, it's for the next gen device, and I'm inclined to agree. Sadly those are all the details they provided. Hopefully this is a sign that preparations for the next gen iPhone launch are proceeding smoothly. [via Gizmodo] More About: Iphone , Filming
Apple Canada Readying Itself for Unknown Event
2008-05-23 18:05:00 Up in the frosty, moose-laden north, Apple Canada is apparently preparing some of its representatives for an upcoming event. According to Electronista, key staff have been asked to travel to the company's Markham, Ontario regional headquarters for discussions as to an unknown topic wherein requests for specifics have been declined. AT&T Cites More Than 2.5 Million iPhone Subscribers, Hints at 3G iPhone
2008-05-23 17:49:00 AT&T Chief Financial Officer Rick Lindner added to the 3G iPhone rumor mill at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit event in New York recently, citing more 2.5 million iPhone subscribers, each shelling out about $100 per month in fees. The executive then went on the mention he had seen a picture of the as-yet-unannounced next generation iPhone, stating "it's coming" without further details. More About: Iphone , Hints , Million
3G iPhone to Support Speeds Up To 42Mbps?
2008-05-23 17:30:00 With a new iPhone rumored to be mere weeks away, it seems obvious that the most major improvement will be the addition of high-speed 3G capabilities. In the US, AT&T has recently announced that it intends to have its 3G network complete by June, coincidently just in time for WWDC. According to AT&T, theirs will be the only fully deployed HSPA data network in the US. However, high-speed data is a norm in many countries overseas. According to Channel News, Australia will have the fastest iPhone offering available, capable of speeds up to 42Mbps by Christmas. More About: Iphone , Support
AT&T cannot keep its mouth shut
2008-05-23 17:26:00 You’ll have to pardon the AT&T executives—they’re just too damn excited about this new version of the iPhone they’ve heard so much about. CFO spoke at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit yesterday, and had this to say about the presumably forthcoming new iPhone model: Lindner said AT&T has yet to determine pricing for a hotly anticipated new version of Apple Inc’s media-playing iPhone. “There’s not been a product announcement. There hasn’t been any pricing decision made. That’s yet to come,” he said. […] Lindner said he has seen a picture of the next iPhone, but not the actual device. *Boggle*: what part of “secret product launches” does this guy not get? Over at the mothership, the good Philip Michaels recently opined on the joys of working with AT&T, so let’s just add this one to the wireless provider’s tab. You know, it occurs to me that maybe th... More About: Mouth , Shut
3G iPhone to support HSPA+?
2008-05-23 16:35:00 The 3G iPhone will be fast, especially on overseas networks where 7.2mbps HSDPA is common. Unfortunately for us in the U.S AT&T has no HSDPA faster than 3.6mbps, but 7.2mbps HSDPA is on their to do list. HSPA in its current form is tops out at 14.4mbps/5.76mbps up/down respectively. Furthermore, the highest speed most devices support is 7.2mbps. HSPA+, also known as HSPA Evolution, or HSPA Evolved, is set to increase speeds significantly. It supports 42mbps/22mbps up/down respectively. To my knowledge, there are currently no HSPA+ devices on the market. Unless one comes out in the next 17 days, then it looks like if this did turn out to be true, then the 3G iPhone would be the first HSPA+ device on the market. For us, this would not do any good for quite a while. Telstra, down in Australia, might be able to take advantage of it though. For them, HSDPA is already at 14.4mbps, and it is rumored that by the time Christmas rolls around this year, that Telstra will have upgraded th... More About: Iphone , Support
AT&T Shipping Out iPhone Bags
2008-05-23 02:05:00 Here's a fun one. Apparently someone at AT&T checked the wrong box when Brett of TUAW ordered his refurbished iPhone. Instead of sending him his 16GB iPhone when he placed the order, they sent him two instead, and charged him for both. To top things off, the next day he was sent an empty box with a plastic bag in it, with an invoice for "75011 MISC iPhone PPA BAG ... $0.00." Seriously, AT&T. What's that about? Lines Already For iPhone 2.0?
2008-05-23 00:06:00 Blogger Jon Accarrino of Methodshop reports that lines are already forming in NYC for iPhone 2.0, which is rumored to be launched on June 9 (the first day of Apple’s WWDC and Steve Jobs’ opening speech). Jon went by Apple’s 5th Avenue store this morning and found a line of about 50 people all waiting for iPhones — or so retail staffers told him. Jon thinks the liner-uppers are already waiting up for the new iPhone. Noting that many in line are Asian, Jon speculates they are from NYC’s Chinatown, and are being paid to wait in line. But I find it hard to believe that people are willing to pay a line-sitter for two weeks or more — especially when there’s no indication there will shortages, which prompted the lines first time around. Reading between the lines of Jon’s report, I’ll bet they are being paid to snap up dwindling supplies of iPhone 1.0 to be sent overseas. As long as Apple places restrictions on the number of iPhones peop... More About: Iphone , Lines
Apple Job Listings: GPS, WiMax, 3G, Mobile TV Experience
2008-05-23 00:02:00 A few more interesting job opportunities at Apple have popped up today that hint at a few new features that Apple is considering for a future iPhone. One job opening for the position of iPhone Product Design Engineer lists one of the preferred areas of experience as "Integration of wireless antenna (GSM, GPS, Wi-Fi) into mechanical enclosures." This seems to be a pretty conclusive sign that Apple is at least considering GPS for the iPhone somewhere down the line. More About: Mobile , Listings , Experience , Wimax

A line forms in Manhattan
2008-05-22 22:20:00 It’s beginning to look a lot like…Soviet Russia. According to some of Engadget’s informants, a line has formed at the 24/7 Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City. The purpose of the line? Nobody quite seems sure. Apple reps apparently say that they’re controlling the crowd of iPhone purchasers, while some people in the line appear to be under the impression that they’ve lined up for the as-of-yet-nonexistent 3G iPhone. Reputedly, yet another group of people says that they just like joining lines. Okay, I’ve spent my fair share of time in lines for all sorts of things—but always with a purpose, be it the iPhone, or The Phantom Menace. Never have I joined a line just for the hell of it. The people who posted the information on the site that was tipped to MacRumors recently posted a disclaimer saying that the screenshot was a photoshop mockup constructed from the current firmware showing what it probably looks like, and that they absolutely did not leak an actual screenshot from firmware 2.0. They also note that anything they said was said previous to being accepted to the iPhone Developer Program. More About: Fake

Review: Fluid 0.9.1.3
More articles from this author:2008-05-22 00:21:00 Increasingly, people work online, using web-based applications for day-to-day tasks. Unfortunately, web browsers aren’t the most robust of applications—a single unruly website or advert is enough to lock up Firefox or bring down Safari unexpectedly. At best, you’ll waste time reopening a browser and signing back in; at worst, you’ll lose work and a precious little nugget of sanity. Inspired by Prism by Mozilla Labs, Fluid offers an approach referred to as Site-Specific Browsers (SSBs). As the method’s name suggests, this enables you to create browsers for specific sites, making them akin to desktop applications. This is great from a stability standpoint—there aren’t other windows with content that can cause problems—but it’s also handy in making you focus on the tasks at hand, rather than getting tempted to check out other websites. Creating SSBs using Fluid is child’s play—you bung a URL, name, location and icon (if ... More About: Review 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
