Nokia Turns Up Volume on XpressMusic Range

Today Nokia introduced two new bar-style phones for its collection of music-centric devices. Both have 2 megapixel cameras, 3.5mm headset jacks, stereo Bluetooth, FM radios with RDS, and dedicated music keys. Both phones are compatible with Nokia’s Music Store, and will be available in the third quarter. 5230: This is the more capable of the two phones, and has quad-band GSM/EDGE, as well as two dual-band HSDPA configurations, 850/2100 and 900/2100. The stand-out feature is the Say and Play function, which lets users say the name of an artist or song, and the phone will automatically begin playing it. The 5230 runs the Nokia S60 operating system, has a separate audio chip for better sound performance, and will support microSD cards up to 8GB. Lastly, it will work with Nokia’s N-Gage gaming platform and has dedicated gaming keys and a landscape view capability. It will cost $350. (more…) Share This

Water to Power Samsung Phones By 2010

Samsung engineers have created a new process that will allow ordinary tap water to provide the electrical power for mobile phones. Water stored in the phone will contact a metal plate. The reaction between the plate and water will create hydrogen gas. The hydrogen gas is then funneled into a fuel cell, where it will further react with oxygen to create electrical power. Because the reactions can generate up to three watts of power, these water-based fuel cells will be powerful enough to be used in devices such as mobile phones. Current versions of the fuel cell can provide power for about 10 hours, and the metal cartridge needs to be replaced about once every five days. Future generations of this technology will not require the cartridges to be changed. Users will be able to fill their phones with water and get power. Share This

This new firmware, thanks to the N95’s built-in accelerometer, offers automatic screen rotation, which was previously available through user-created software.
