ANNOUNCING THE WINNERS OF THE 2007 TAMRON “AN EMOTIONAL APPEAL” PHOTO C
2007-12-18 20:16:00 Leading Professional Photo grapher and Contest Judge Selects Grand Prize Winner and Twenty Favorites Now Posted on Tamron ’s On-Line GalleryDecember 17, 2007, Commack, NY—The overwhelming majority of great photographs, especially those including people, has one thing in common—they effectively capture, express, and convey human emotions. In other words, photographs that are judged to be the best are almost always those that evoke a strong emotional response in the viewer. Bearing that simple but profound concept in mind, Tamron, acclaimed for manufacturing innovative lenses of superlative quality, created an entirely new kind of photo contest, An Emotional Appeal that debuted in 2006. Instead of basing it on the usual range of specific subject categories, we asked all entrants to submit pictures that best express the universal theme of human emotion and emotional interaction. The rules were equally broad—the pictures submitted didn’t even have to be taken with a Tamron lens.... More About: Winners , Anno

2007-12-18 19:57:00 Jan Vermeer, a passionate Dutch Wildlife photographer, has made a special journey lately with the aim of capturing the emperor penguin in its natural habitat using the Nikon D300. We have obtained the exclusive rights for our German edition and we gladly refer you to the Nikon D300 test in practice made by Jan Vermeer. The Nikon D300 has recently become available and is receiving a lot of attention since then. And for a good reason listening to Jan's comments on the D300! Jan Vermeer has been shooting with the Nikon D2x for a while now but has to admit that the D300 has a lot to offer and that it turns out to be an ideal second body for the photographer he is for future projects. Canon 40D review
2007-12-18 19:51:00 Canon 40D SLR review : Canon listened very well to their users and testers. The Canon 40D SLR camera has been improved significantly compared to the 30D. And although most people would look at the sensor immediately, the main improvement is not found there. The amount of pixels has been increased alright to 10 million but pixels are only one thing in a camera. The EOS 40D has been equipped with the latest DIGIC III processor and that is a more important step than you would think. Not only does the new processor improve the image quality, in addition the DIGIC III enables Live View. And it enables faster processing of the signal; the image speed got enhanced to 6.5 frames per second.• Read our Canon 40D review.Dennis Hissinkmore : letsgodigital More About: Canon , Review , Anon
Nikon D3 first impressions
2007-12-17 19:37:00 Nikon's most recent DSLR announcements were dominated by the debut of its first full-frame model, the D3. Sporting a 12.1 Megapixel ‘FX-format’ CMOS sensor, the new D3 made big claims over high sensitivity performance, and unlike Canon’s full-frame models, it could also accommodate lenses designed for its cropped-frame bodies – albeit with a cropped frame and at a reduced resolution.Nikon fanatics the world over are understandably excited about the D3, and Camera Labs forum moderator Thomas is no exception. Self-confessed Nikon ‘fanboy’ and passionate owner of a D80 and numerous lenses including his beloved DX 18-200mm VR, Thomas was particularly excited about checking out the new D3 for himself. So when the Nikon Solutions Expo came within 500km of his home town, we couldn’t hold him back. What follows is the second part of an interview between Thomas and Camera Labs Editor Gordon Laing after the show. Part one featured Thomas’ views on the D300, and now in Part two... When darkness falls
2007-12-16 17:00:00 "We conducted a spectacularly unscientific comparison of four DSLRs - a Nikon D80 with no IS; a Canon 40D and a Panasonic L10 with in-lens IS and an Olympus E-3 with in-body IS. Each was fitted with its kit lens. We were looking at image sharpness, colour and noise. We set up an object under a single incandescent lamp and set all cameras to ISO1600 and set the same manual exposure on all.We hand-held each camera at 115 second at f8 with the zoom at 70 mm focal length (film equivalent) and framed all shots the same. What we discovered, for the little that it's worth, is that the Panasonic is the sharpest but also the noisiest - the penalty of the smaller sensor. The Olympus, with similar sensor but different image processor, is sharp and exhibits well controlled noise. The Canon is astonishingly free of noise and just about as sharp. The Nikon has the most accurate colour and is almost as noise-free as the Canon but it falls short on sharpness, suggesting image stabilisation matters.... Naneu Pro K3 Heads Back to the Motherland
2007-12-16 16:55:00 BEIJING — As an urban warrior on the streets of New York City, it’s almost a requirement for me to own a backpack with a laptop compartment. For the past year and a half, I’ve used the STM Sports backpack with much success and originally planned to take it on my trip to China. But then I was given the chance to bring the Naneu Pro K3 back to the motherland (it, like me, was manufactured in China but exported globally), and the lure of its many compartments was too strong to resist. Built for photographers and photojournalists, the bag’s base is designed to fit a large DSLR camera and several lenses. The bag, meanwhile, comes with a compartment for 15-inch laptops and features more than 15 other pockets — both large and small — semi-hidden throughout its body.Wayne Mamore : crunchgear More About: Back , Motherland , Heads
Reduce noise with LAB
2007-12-14 16:34:00 Have you ever looked at your camera's LCD screen and been completely happy with the overall look of your images--only to later realize that they are full of "noise"?Digital camera noise can take on a number of looks. It can look of big grains of sand across the whole image, or a lack of detail in dark areas, or colorful "specs" in the light or dark areas of your image.Noise is usually the result of underexposure or by setting your camera's ISO at a high level (each camera behaves differently). Long exposures or a very warm environment can also contribute to high noise levels. Very small imaging sensors, like those found in most cell phones, often produce images with significant noise (especially color noise). Using cameras with sensors that have larger photo sites (like many DSLRs) and shooting in RAW (when possible) can help to reduce noise because of the added control you have after the shot. What can you do to reduce noise? One approach is to convert to LAB space in Adobe Photos... More About: Reduce
Bags Santa would envy capable of carrying all your digital stuff. And more.
2007-12-14 16:30:00 Santa's bag is swell, but can it snugly and safely carry a laptop computer, a digital SLR, a couple lenses, your iPod, and all those devices' associated cables and memory cards? My Crumpler bag can do it, with style, comfort and room to spare. The odd Aussie bagmaker with the strange naming convention recently sent me a sample of their "Sinking Barge (http://www.crumplerbags.com/Cart/index.p hp?catId=22)." It's a backpack about the size of the one your favorite college or high school student might use, but with so much more going for it. The inside back of the bag contains a padded compartment with a hook-and-loop closer that locks a laptop into place. My 15-inch MacBook Pro fits perfectly.Separate compartments safely hold pens, wires, chargers, etc. But it's real trick is the front pouch, that place normally reserved for car keys and granola bars. Zip it open and you'll find a medium-sized camera bag hidden inside. There's a compartment to snugly hold a digital SLR and an attac... More About: Bags , Stuff , Santa , Digital , Envy
Nikon D300 Review - dcresource
2007-12-14 16:19:00 The Nikon D300 is the LONG awaited successor to the D200, which was introduced way back in 2005. This upgrade isn't evolutionary by any stretch of the imagination -- it's a totally new camera. Here are the most significant new features: * New 12.3 effective Megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor * EXPEED image processing "concept" * Continuous shooting as fast as 8 frames/second (with the optional battery grip) * 51-point autofocus with 3D subject tracking * Huge 3-inch LCD display with 307,000 pixels (920,000 dots) with live view support * Dust reduction system * Picture Control settings let you have sets of color control settings (think Picture Styles on Canon SLRs) * Active D-Lighting lets you brighten shadows while taking photos (instead of after) * Rugged magnesium alloy body is sealed against dust and moisture * HDMI video outputAnd that's just the short list -- there will be a lot more new stuff mentioned in the review. The D300 is probably the most-anticipated... Nikon D80 Shark Photography Expedition Bahamas
2007-12-14 16:00:00 Nikon D80 Shark Photography Expedition Bahamas : The Sea & Sea DX-D80 is a professional underwater housing, but because it is very easy to use the beginner underwater photographer can use it as well. It is quite robust; it can be taken down up to 60 meters. Without the digital SLR camera it weighs 2700 grams, which is still quite heavy. Luckily it is easy to handle, and because of the neutral weight underwater, you do not notice that it is heavy. The back of the underwater housing is made of polycarbonate and the front is made of corrosion-resistant aluminium alloy, for maximal stiffness and a solid grip. It is too bad that it is not made completely of aluminium, because this makes it more robust.Mark Petersmore : letsgodigital More About: Nikon
Camera Test: Olympus E-3
2007-12-14 15:52:00 First impressions matter, especially for photographers seeking a picture-taking partner. But sometimes it takes a real effort to figure out if a DSLR is the perfect match for you. For instance, when Olympus introduced us to its new 10.1MP E-3 ($1,700, street, body only), it seemed like love at first sight (see Hands On, December 2007). Yet we needed time (and Lab tests of a production model...how romantic!) to confirm our first impressions. Are we still enamoured? Even more so. This new Olympus flagship DSLR proves that the Four Thirds system has a bona fide place in the pro and advanced-amateur photographer's kit.Continuing the innovation begun with the E-1, its predecessor, the E-3 incorporates such features as the Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction system, as well as staples of its sub-$1,000 DSLR line, such as live view with autofocus and sensor-based image stabilization with live confirmation.Olympus replaced the E-1's sluggish AF with a super-fast, 11-point biaxial AF syst... Pentax K10D Digital SLR Review
2007-12-14 15:44:00 It's over eight months since I reviewed the Samsung GX-10 digital SLR, basically a licence-built copy of today's review camera, the Penta x K10D. As I remarked at the time, it was unusual for me to review the copy before the original, but I was fully expecting to receive the K10D at any time, so I wasn't too bothered. However I had no idea that, due to some people not returning their review samples on time, it would take me this long to finally get my hands on a K10D. The camera was launched in September 2006, and may well be replaced in Pentax's model range early next year, which makes this probably the latest review I've ever done, but better late than never, and I'm glad I've finally had a chance to try this excellent camera.Pentax could have been one of the first camera companies to launch a purpose-built digital SLR. It announced the development of an impressive-looking 6-megapixel full-frame DLSR, codenamed the MR-52, in September 2000, and even had a prototype to show o... More About: Review , Digital
Hands-on with the Samsung GX-10
2007-12-13 06:19:00 Ah, Christmas. A time of goodwill; a time of rejoicing in the simple pleasures of human company; a time of love. And a time of half-crazed shoppers who'll climb over your trampled body for a bargain. Fortunately, there are some bargains out there that don't require a life-threatening sortie into the retail danger zone. Thanks to some re-branding and a festive discount, the Samsung GX-10, a 10.2-megapixel prosumer dSLR camera, could well be one.Whisper it, but the GX-10 is a re-badged Pentax K10D. That means you get a decent camera with more than a few pence wiped off the price, as Samsung is less established in the camera field. With the innovative NV series making our tummies go all wobbly here at Crave, that may be about to change.CCD-shifting optical image stabilisation keeps things steady, while the sensor is protected by a two-stage dust-removal system. The elements are kept out by weatherproof seals, with even the SD card hatch sealed by a dinky little twist lock.It shoots J... More About: Hands , Hands On

Getting back into the fight
2007-11-02 19:01:00 Olympus Imaging recently launched its new professional DSLR, which it hopes will reestablish the company as a market force to be reckoned with. IN THE fast moving, quickly progressing world of digital photography, a lot can happen in a year. Such is the pace that this year’s entry-level model may outclass last year’s top-of-the-range model in several areas – obvious benchmarks being resolution (more megapixels), performance and image quality. So you can probably imagine how fans of Olympus’ DSLR E-system felt as the E-1 clocked up four years as the company’s sole professional offering. While the E-1 is still a very well-designed and superbly built professional DSLR by today’s standards, it is now even eclipsed by cheap consumer DSLRs – including Olympus’ own models – in these benchmarks. But with the launch of the E-3, the Olympus E-System range finally has a king that’s fit to wear the crown. And on many levels, this is also the most important camera the company... No less than 80 journalists from Europe, among them four colleagues from the Netherlands, were flown to Nairobi, Kenya, at the invitation of Canon. In Nairobi small groups were formed to fly to the Borana ranch in the Laikipia area, north of Nairobi and situated by the Mount Kenya.
