Lowepro Flipside 300 and Fastpack 250 Review
2008-03-25 10:22:00
The Lowepro Flipside 300 ($99.99) is the largest of the Flipside backpack/camera bag series at exterior dimensions of 10.2"W x 6.9"W x 17.5"D (Interior 9.1"W x 5.4"D x 15.9"D). It's available in Black, Arctic Blue/Black/Red/Black color schemes. The Flipside 300 is deceiving. I swear, this bag is bigger on the inside than the outside. It is surprisingly small looking but once you open it up the interior is spacious. It can easily hold a pro DSLR with a 300mm f2.8 lens, several smaller lenses, flash, cords, memory cards, notebook, sunglasses, and keys. All the interior padded dividers are rearrangeable or can be removed entirely. You can expand its capabilities with Lowepro's optional bottle bag, Lens Case 2 or SliplockTM pouch 50AW (AW stands for All Weather). EXTERIOR: The backpack is slim and I think any of the women photographers out there who don't want to lug around one of the larger backpack style bags will find this bag a great fit. On top is one of the more comfortable padd...

Nikon D60 (with 18mm-55mm lens)
2008-03-25 10:07:00
There was a time when the idea of an entry-level dSLR was a bit of an oxymoron. Even the least expensive SLR was a large step up from the digital compacts at the time, but these days entry-level SLRs are being made to be entry-level, and their prices line up closely with the most expensive compact cameras. Nikon 's D60 is a good example of the current breed of these dSLRs. It checks in with a healthy 10.2-megapixel CCD sensor, a slightly small-by-comparison 2.5-inch LCD, and an upgraded, now-optically-stabilized, kit lens. While those features are nice, the D60 falls behind the competition in several areas in terms of its specifications. For instance, Sony's DSLR-A200 also sports 10.2-megapixels, but has a slightly larger 2.7-inch screen, body-based image stabilization, similar in-camera editing and dynamic-range optimization features, and costs less than this Nikon. Its performance numbers were slightly worse than the D60, but not by very much. Meanwhile Canon's Rebel XSi, which ...

Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III Review
2008-03-25 09:52:00
ControlsAt first glance, the 1Ds Mark III appears easy to operate. There are the familiar Canon control wheels, one just behind the shutter release and a thumb-wheel on the back of the camera. The first hint that the camera might not be so simple is the presence of three external LCD displays: top deck, rear monitor, rear icon panel. Where should you look to find a particular piece of information or verify a particular camera setting? It isn't obvious. The familiar top-deck control wheel ("mode dial") from Canon's cheaper digital SLRs is chucked due to its susceptibility to dust, moisture, and failure. To change among exposure modes, you press a couple of bottoms on the top left of the camera while simultaneously turning the main control dial.In some ways the interface is simpler than on Canon's lower-end bodies. There are no idiot modes so you don't have to wonder what the camera will do when set to the flower icon, the "running guy" icon, or the "green box" icon. You choose amo...

Portrait Lenses for the Canon EOS system
2008-03-23 19:26:00
Probably the first thing to be said about portrait lenses is that you can take a portrait with just about any lens ever made. However some lenses tend to give better results than others, which is the point of this article. It's mostly about perspective. For "normal" portraits, does the lens render the image the way that you normally experience it - in other words does the portrait actually look like the person being portrayed? If it does then the lens might be considered a good portrait lens. If it doesn't, it would be more of a "special effects" lens. Now some people think that it's the focal length of the lens that governs perspective, but they'd be wrong. If you compare normal rectilinear lenses (i.e. not with fisheye lenses), the perspective is determined only by your distance from the subject. The size of the subject is determined by the focal length. So if you are 100ft from a deer and you take a picture with a 20mm lens and a 200mm lens, the deer will be 10x larger with th...

We've just been handed a production version of the new Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi and have done our best to bring you some sample images. The London weather has done us no favors but we thought you'd be eager to find out how its 12.2 megapixel images look so we persevered. A mixture of lenses and ISO settings were used to try to give an all-round impression of the camera's behavior and, as always, you can download the original files to scrutinize.more : dpreview

Olympus E-420 photo gallery
2008-03-22 19:10:00
Olympus E-420 digital SLR camera : Its predecessor has been around for a while so it's high time to introduce a fresh sibling of the Olympus family to the world. Time for a new FourThirds SLR; the Olympus E420. The appearance of this camera is not that much striking since we are already acquainted with the E410 as an ultra-compact DSLR and the Olympus E420 is comparable. However, Olympus have carried out some rigorous internal changes that lift in particular the image quality to a high level. The image sensor remains the same in relation to sensitivity and ISO 1600 is the highest possible setting. The sensor itself has been somewhat improved and Olympus claim that it nearly equals the quality of the Olympus E-3. A claim that certainly draws the attention to Olympus!Dennis Hissinkmore : letsgodigital

Pentax DA* 200mm f/2.8 Lens Review
2008-03-21 18:05:00
ERGONOMICSLens MountThe Pentax DA* 200mm ED (IF) SDM f/2.8 prime is offered only in the Pentax KAF2 lens mount, a modernization of the long-lasting Pentax K mount. With a crop factor of 1.5x on DSLR cameras, the lens has a 35mm equivalent range of 300mm.What separates the KAF2 mount from earlier versions is the addition of a contact for new lenses with a built-in Supersonic Motor (SDM), which the DA* 200mm employs.Design and Build QualityThe Pentax 200mm is a fast aperture, internal focus (IF) prime, designed to cover the moderate telephoto focal length range and deliver sharp, professional-level image quality in any type of lighting environment. This isn't a $200 telephoto lens we're talking about. The DA* 200mm is a massive, heavy lens with rugged build quality that is second to none in its price range ($1,100). Fit and finish are first rate with a mix of metal alloy and polycarbonate. The broad ridged-surface rubber focus ring is perfectly placed with the perfect amount of dampe...

SAMPLE IMAGES : Olypus E-420 with 25mm f/2.8 pancake lens
2008-03-21 17:40:00
Alas, good weather did not coincide with the arrival of our Olympus E-420 plus Digital Zuiko 25mm f/2.8 'pancake' lens. The image samples below were taken under cloudy, cold and blustery conditions. All were taken with the E-420 noise filter set to Standard mode. These samples are primarily to demonstrate the 25mm f/2.8 lens, but will be useful in evaluating the E-420 itself. A separate article with ISO range samples is being prepared, so watch this space. We have included un-edited camera JPEGs (Large Fine quality, which is similar to what used to be called SHQ or Super High Quality) as well as the RAW versions of each image. At the time of writing only Olympus Studio 2.1.2 or Olympus Master 2.0.5 are capable of developing E-420 RAW files.Ian Burleymore : fourthirds-user

Sony A200 Review - [dcresource]
2008-03-21 17:25:00
The Sony Alpha DSLR-A200 is a very capable entry-level D-SLR that needs improvement in one important area: JPEG photo quality. The A200 offers a lot of bang for the buck, with its 10 Megapixel CCD, built-in image stabilization, snappy performance, and great battery life. If you keep the ISO sensitivity low, the photo quality is very good. However, increasing the sensitivity (especially in low light) kicks the camera's noise reduction system in high gear, giving photos a soft appearance, with smudged details. Sure, you can get much better results by shooting in RAW mode, but my belief is that JPEGs should look just as good. If you're into post-processing your photos, then I can highly recommend the DSLR-A200. If you don't want to fuss with your computer to get the most out of the camera, then you might want to consider something else. The DSLR-A200 is a midsize digital SLR with a sturdy plastic shell over a metal frame. While its price may be entry-level, the A200's construction ...

Olympus E-420 First Thoughts
2008-03-21 17:19:00
When the Olympus E-420 was announced a few weeks back, there was lots of talk from the company about how compact and light their latest entry-level 10.0 megapixel DSLR was. With lots of smallest/lightest/fastest claims bandied about out there, we were appropriately skeptical. As it turns out, though, they weren't kidding. In its current group of competitors, if the Nikon D60 is a sedan, the Canon XSi an SUV, and the Pentax K200D a school bus, the E-420's like a Mini Cooper. While it's not that much smaller or that much lighter than its closest competitors when the hard specs are pulled out, reductions in key dimensions certainly make it look and, more importantly, feel smaller.David Rasnake more : digitalcamerareview

Sony Teases With Flagship Alpha Digital SLR
2008-03-20 19:32:00
Sony showed its upcoming flagship Alpha DSLR camera at a Tokyo event, but released no additional details on the camera's launch. The upcoming Sony flagship digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera got its first outing in Tokyo Wednesday at the Photo Imaging Expo, but the company is remaining tight-lipped on details of the anticipated product. The camera, which is due on the market this year, will sit at the top of Sony's Alpha DSLR range. Single-lens reflex cameras use a mirror placed between the lens and the film or image sensor to project the image to the camera's viewfinder. The mirror moves out of the way when the picture is taken. They typically support interchangeable lenses and are faster and more capable than smaller point-and-shoot cameras. Not much information is known about the camera beyond what Sony disclosed at the recent PMA show in the United States. There it said the flagship model has a full-frame sensor -- an image sensor the same size as a 35mm film frame -- with...

The 75th Anniversary of NIKKOR Lenses
2008-03-20 19:27:00
Tokyo -- Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the 75th anniversary of NIKKOR camera lenses, since the first lens was introduced in 1933. To commemorate this anniversary, we are renewing our commitment to provide NIKKOR lenses that feature advanced functions and superior optical performance. And at the same time, we will introduce several activities to further improve awareness of the NIKKOR brand. About the NIKKOR brandNIKKOR is the brand name for Nikon camera lenses. In 1933, Nikon marketed its first camera lens under the NIKKOR brand name, the "Aero-NIKKOR," for aerial photography applications.Since then, NIKKOR has developed extensively into both consumer and industrial markets, becoming a synonym for Japan's leading high-performance lenses. We have had the Sony Alpha 350 for a short period of time in our office and took it with us to shoot some sample shots in Amsterdam, location Artis Zoo. At this day it was cloudy with some rain showers and here and there some sun shine, therefore the butterfly garden is one of the best places to shoot some test photos. The Sony DSLR A350 was introduced at the PMA 2008 in Las Vegas, a big event which we visit every year. The Sony Alpha 350 offers Sony’s new “Quick AF Live View” technology so you can frame photos and keep the fast auto-focusing speed common to other live-view systems. Nikon D60 Review - [dpreview ]
2008-03-19 20:19:00
The D60 is the third incarnation of Nikon 's compact, user-friendly entry-level SLR line that started back in 2006 with the D40 (which replaced the first Nikon 'starter' model, the D50). The original D40 was a hugely important camera for Nikon and can be given a lot of the credit for the resurgence in Nikon's fortunes at the volume end of the SLR market (which had been totally dominated by Canon since the launch of the EOS 300D / Digital Rebel). The D40's success (which continued long after the D40X made its swift appearance only 6 months later) isn't hard to explain; it was keenly priced, nicely designed and built and capable of excellent results. It was also a camera that proved cameras do not sell on megapixels alone (even at launch its 6MP resolution was far from 'class leading'). The D40X, which was positioned as a premium alternative to the D40 rather than its replacement, didn't mess around with the formula much at all; a new sensor with more (ten) megapixels and a lo...

Bulldog 5x4 self assembly camera Large-Format Review
2008-03-19 19:47:00
Bulldog 5x4 Self Assembly Camera VerdictCamera Bellows are not the first to develop a self build large format camera, several have been before and no doubt a few will follow. I really enjoyed building this and there's always a large element of satisfaction when you see the project complete. Apart from a few hiccups in building errors caused by poor instructions or my lack of attention the whole thing went smoothly and actually took less time than I expected. I've yet to try the camera as it doesn't have a lens or film back, but the kit gets a thumbs up and even if you never use the camera it's a wonderful looking thing. It's not much more expensive than some luxury model aircraft kits either, so if you're that way inclined this could be your next kit. Highly recommended for those crafts people among us.more : ephotozine

Hands On with the Nikon D300
2007-12-19 20:00:00
Competition is at a record high in the mid-level digital SLR category and Nikon has staked its claim with its D300. At $1,800 (body only), the D300 is one of the more expensive prosumer models on the market but its advanced features, above average image quality, strong low-light capabilities and speedy autofocus performance can certainly justify the extra dollars, especially if your bank account is flush and you’re looking for a D3/D300 back-up combination. It has been a while since there’s been a really heated (or justified) Nikon versus Canon debate but the D300 – and, more likely, the D3 – has re-ignited the competitive flames. Despite loyalties to one brand or the other, the D300/D3 one-two punch is definitely food for thought regardless of which side of the fence you’re on.Catching Up or Nipping at Heels?Equipped with a 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, 14-bit A/D converter, on-board sensor cleaning system, Live View and a high resolution 3-inch LCD, the D300 meets or exceed...

Olympus E-3 Digital SLR Review
2007-12-19 19:56:00
OverviewThe new Olympus E-3 is the flagship of its digital SLR line and combines speed of operation--from startup to capture—with live view and dust-reduction capabilities. It has body-integrated mechanical image stabilization that works with every Zuiko Digital lens, a 10-megapixel sensor, all housed in a dust and splash-proof magnesium alloy body. The camera's shutter is rated up to 150,000 cycles, so it should withstand heavy duty and professional use. Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS Lens Review
2007-12-19 19:51:00
Canon has maintained the position that image stabilization functions best when installed in the lens. According to Canon, "The advantages of IS in the lens are, first, that each IS system can be designed and optimized for its specific application, yielding a level of performance unattainable by the in-body, shifting sensor technique. Second, one can see the image stabilization effect in the finder. The image is steady; accurate framing is possible; the AF point can be placed precisely, and the photographer can concentrate on the shot and capture the best moment. Panning is also easier and more effective than with the in-body approach." With that understanding along with the popularity of IS, it is not surprising that Canon introduced an image stabilized version of the value-priced Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II Lens currently included in many Canon DSLR kits. What was less apparent from the announcement was that the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens would bring us an upgrade in ...

This camera has been more than four years in the making. Was it worth the wait? In short, yes.FeaturesThe Olympus E-3 is packed with features well suited to how photographers actually work. The most-used photographic controls are close at hand and quick and easy to adjust — just what you would expect from a professional-level camera. Most of the dedicated button controls are the hold-down-and-turn-dial variety, which work great. The E-3’s relatively large viewfinder features a 100 percent field-of-view, a built-in eyepiece cover for Live View s...
