Xbox 360 outsells rival PlayStation 3, but by how much?
2007-12-03 22:31:00
Microsoft Corp. on Thursday reported U.S. sales of 310,000 Xbox 360 game consoles for the Thanksgiving week, trailing Nintendo's Wii console but leading Sony's PlayStation 3 at the start of holiday shopping. The release of the numbers also brought some controversy. In a statement distributed to the media, Microsoft claimed that Xbox 360 sales were twice those of the PlayStation 3 for the week, which included the key "Black Friday" shopping day after Thanksgiving. Sony didn't disagree that the PlayStation 3 came in third, but said it wasn't by the margin Microsoft cited. Sony traditionally doesn't disclose game console sales figures until the NPD Group research firm releases monthly numbers, Kimberly Otzman, a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment America, said. "However, I can assure you that Microsoft's estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week," Otzman said. Microsoft continued...

Study: .Net overtakes Java
2007-12-02 20:52:00
Microsoft's .Net software development platform is more popular than Java in the enterprise, according to one industry analyst firm's report detailed on Wednesday Info-Tech Research Group said its research found .Net the choice over Java among enterprises of all sizes and industries. Entitled, "It's Official: .Net Roasts Java's Beans," the study explored the relative prevalence of Java and .Net across different types of enterprises and found .Net has gained considerable market share and become the favorite of many enterprises. In conducting its study, Info-Tech said it recently surveyed more than 1,850 organizations of different sizes. Info-Tech's research is not sponsored, a company representative said. Almost half of all enterprises responding to the survey focus primarily on .Net with an additional 12 percent focused exclusively on .Net, the research found. This compares with just 20 percent of enterprises focusing primarily on Java and only 3 percent standardizi...

Home Computer. Home Network. Home Server.
2007-12-01 22:10:00
In the 1960s & 70s the idea of a home computer was unheard of outside of science fiction circles. Before the late 1980s home networks were unheard of. In 1975 Microsoft was founded with the vision of putting "A computer on every desk and in every home...".  Microsoft led the charge in creating a world where a "home computer" something you expect to see in a home. By including great support for networking technologies (particularly TCP/IP) in Windows 3x and 95 Microsoft ensured ubiquitous networking in businesses and homes. Today there are over 100 million households with a "home network" and Microsoft led the world in making this happen. When we set about building Windows Home Server we knew we were going to be defining a new category of products and solutions for consumers. We thought long and hard about what we should call the product.  As you would expect, there was no shortage of opinions. In fact some very, very senior executives at Microsof...

MSN/Live Video shares surge, Competitors Sink
2007-12-01 21:58:00
This month?s online video stack-up saw a major reshuffling with 3 of the Top 5 players trading places amid heavy shifts in traffic. YouTube continued to outperform the market, growing 1% in October to 213M visits on nearly 52M unique visitors. The Top 20 video sites as a set contracted 6% in October. Extraordinary gains were realized by the Microsoft family of video sites, which includes MSN Video and Live Search Video, catapulting the Redmond rival into 2nd place, three spots ahead of its rank in September. MSN/Live Video grew 25.3% to 35M visits on the strength of 21M visitors. Meanwhile, major losses struck Yahoo! Video, MySpaceTV and Heavy.com. MySpace?s decline is particularly troublesome given that it?s the 3rd straight month of double-digit losses for the social networking giant. Since July 2007, MySpace has seen its online video market share halved to 7.6%. At Yahoo! Video, unique visitors held relatively steady while visits declined 27.5%. The drop indicates that visitors t...

Microsoft shows next version of Windows Mobile behind closed doors!
2007-11-29 16:57:00
So we can't really delve into a lot of specifics, but today Microsoft showed off the next version of Windows Mobile at their annual Mobius conference. Nope, it's not Windows Mobile 7 / Photon, but what we saw "is an update, not an upgrade", was running on current hardware, and is due to manufacturers Q108. Our first impressions: very slick, and has a lot of features that just about any WinMo user will agree is way overdue. In other words, we're expecting users will be stoked -- no doubt about it. Expect specific details on features and the like in the near future, we wouldn't be surprised to hear more about it CES. Via: Engadget Taimur Asad (The Microsoft "Wow" Blog!)

Is Windows Vista SideShow finally coming to Windows Mobile?
2007-11-24 01:57:00
It's been a while that we talked about Microsoft's Windows Vista SideShow feature and while SideShow is still not too popular, finally there are some good chances we might see it officially coming to Windows Mobile as well. Windows SideShow is a new technology which was introduced with Windows Vista and so far it's mostly used to support a secondary screen on mobile PCs, even if the developers also had remote control support for Windows Media Center, and digital photo frames in mind. With this additional display you can view important information whether your laptop is on, off, or in sleep mode. However, so far there isn't too much SideShow compatible hardware available and even HTC's Shift UMPC isn't utilizing SideShow to display received E-Mails and PIM data but HTC decided to use its own technology called SnapVUE, which is based on Windows Mobile . One problem is, that SideShow requires dedicated hardware instead of utilizing exisitng hardware - namely Windows Mobile. Anyway...

Office Live Documents - Hotmail Founder Challenges Microsoft
2007-11-22 16:38:00
Sabeer Bhatia sold Hotmail to Microsoft in 1997 for around $400 million. After selling Hotmail, Sabeer tried new ventures but none of  them were very successful. Now Sabeer has decided to challenge the cash cow (Microsoft Office ) of the same company that made him a millionaire. Today he has launched Office Live Documents - an online+offline Office suite of programs similar to Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Like Zoho Office and Google Docs, Live Documents lets you create, edit and share Office documents in the web browser.  All your edits are automatically synchronized with all other copies of the documents. And if you own a copy of Microsoft Office, you can download a Live Documents toolbar that makes it easy to upload documents from your Office programs to the Live Documents cloud (very similar to Office Live Workspace). Live Documents is done in Flex so should work on any system that has the Flash plug-in. Overall, Live Docs sounds like a good concept but they are definitely up aga...

Ballmer Welcomes Google's Android OS to "Microsoft's World"
2007-11-17 20:02:00
Ballmer has some more interesting insight into looking at the world through Microsoft -colored glasses. At a recent Tokyo press conference, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had some interesting things to say about Google and its new Android OS, the mobile phone OS that Google has in development.Ballmer has a penchant for colorful remarks; for example. he recently likened his relationship with Microsoft founder and good friend Bill Gates to a marriage which has produced many, many children.Ballmer was at it again, raining harsh criticism on Google, dismissing Android OS as nothing but a press release. He also stated that he would like to welcome Google into "Microsoft's world," apparently referring to t he mobile phone market. He said, "Right now they have a press release, we have many, many millions of customers, great software, many hardware devices and they're welcome in our world."His remarks seem slightly curious as Microsoft is dominated in market share of the ...

Microsoft makes November build of Windows Server 2008 available to testers
2007-11-17 16:57:00
Microsoft didn?t release only a refreshed test build of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 this week. It also quietly posted an updated test build of Windows Server 2008. Testers with pre-approved access to Microsoft?s private Connect download site can grab the Windows Server 2008 November Community Technology Preview (for both X86 and X64 machines). The build number is 6001-17042-071107-1618. No word yet from testers on what?s new in the latest Windows Server 2008 build. It?s not yet quite Release Candidate (RC) 1, but the Softies are getting closer.  Microsoft has said to expect Windows Server 2008 to be released to manufacturing in the first calendar quarter of 2008. Windows Server 2008 will ship in eight flavors, some of which will include Microsoft?s integrated Hyper-V hypervisor, and others which won?t, Microsoft announced earlier this week. Given that the new Vista SP1 build and this server refresh came out simultaneously, I?m wondering about any new features in the SP1 bu...

Vista SP1: Release Candidate test build goes to 15,000 testers
2007-11-15 20:39:00
Microsoft has delivered yet another test build of Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 to testers. On November 14, the new build ? designated the SP1 Release Candidate (RC) Preview ? went to a slightly expanded group of 15,000 pre-selected testers. Microsoft made a first public beta of Vista SP1 available to 12,000 testers in September. The new build can be downloaded by invited testers from Microsoft?s private Connect test site. Microsoft has been making builds of Vista SP1 available to progressively larger groups of testers since earlier this spring. The company has been dangling the promise of making a test build Vista SP1 available more broadly, first as a semi-public build downloadable by Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) members, and ultimately, by any interested parties. Microsoft posted a note to MSDN two weeks ago announcing availability of a Vista SP1 beta, but later pulled the note and apologized for the false alarm. As of November 14, Microsoft officials declined to sa...

Windows Live OneCare 2.0 launches!
2007-11-15 14:27:00
Today?s families increasingly have more than one PC at home, and with Microsoft internal data suggesting the average U.S. household now owns approximately 2.5 PCs, households and small businesses have a strong need to simplify the way they provide security and care for all of their PCs. With increased mobility and the rise of the home computer network, ensuring a stable, secure computing experience has become more complex, yet important as ever before. To address this complexity, Microsoft introduced Windows Live OneCare, one of the first software products to provide a comprehensive PC care solution. Today, Microsoft announced the next version of Windows Live OneCare, which provides even greater security for home or small offices, and delivers features that make it easy to back up data and manage multiple PCs. PressPass spoke with Amy Barzdukas, senior director for Windows Live O neCare, about the launch of Windows Live OneCare and how it can provide customers with an easier way to...

Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update revealed: download Halo December 2
2007-11-13 23:40:00
The Fall Xbox 360 dashboard update has now been officially revealed, and it's looks awesome with Xbox Classics and films on demand. December 4 is the date you'll need to watch out for; that's the day you'll be able to download and play Halo . Yes, Halo as in the Xbox game, through Marketplace, on your Xbox 360 . Isn't technology great! Microsoft is introducing games it has published for the original Xbox on XBL Marketplace, with the eventual plan to bring as much of the back catalogue across as possible. Third party games will also be available to 'demand'. Games cost about 1200 Microsoft points (about ten quid), which according to us puts them a little over what you'd pay for them second hand.  The initial list of downloads includes Halo, Fable, Fahrenheit, Crimson Skies: High Road To Revenge, Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath Of Cortex and Burnout 3. All good then, apart from maybe Crash. The official blurb reads: "Starting on Dec. 4, all Xbox Live members will receive a free s...

Zune 2.0: Exclusive features info!
2007-11-11 20:07:00
ZuneBoards.com has got some exclusive info from Microsoft about the new features we can expect from all the Zunes come this Tuesday: 1.      Pairing Zune to a new computer will not delete your content.  In 1.0 and with iPods, they require you delete all of your content when you pair it with a new computer.  In 2.0, this requirement didn?t seem to be very customer-friendly and was lifted. 2.      Copy music to your computer.  Reverse sync was a feature in v1 and we?ve made it even easier to do in v2.  When looking at music in your device, just click and drag any music to the computer icon in the bottom left of the screen, and you can copy your music to the computer you?re connected to.  This is especially great when moving music from your home PC to your work PC and vice-versa. 3.      Express yourself.  The Zune Social is launching in beta, and it is incredible how addictive it is to be able to see what music your friends are playing and what their favorite artists are.  The Z...

Have you wondered why the Zune 80 only has 1 color to choose from? Have you wondered if Microsoft is hiding some big secret for launch day? According to our source inside of Microsoft, this information is absolutely top secret. Well, it was until now. Here is the exact leak from our source verbatim: "...but there is something that Microsoft is holding onto releasing information...about until Tuesday. People who order their zune from Zune.net, will have the added bonus of being able to customize their zune. This will include colour, up to five lines of custom text, and the choice of 25 preset logos that they can have etched into their zune prior to delivery. There will be no added cost, but it is only available through Zune.Net... ...I do believe that Microsoft will go Ape$h%t ...

You can't keep a good retailer down, especially the kind that gadget nerds like us so adore: those that breaking sales embargoes and put hotly anticipated product (like these new Zune s, for example) on store shelves early. Behold, new Zunes -- which aren't supposed to be on sale until next week -- popping up on store shelves at Circuit City and Target. Granted, we don't know how many (if any) sold, since it sounds like they may have actually gotten pulled before customers made a dash for the registers, but who knows, perhaps you might strike Zune gold by trawling the shelves at your local mega-retailer this very weekend. You know who to tip off if you bring home the booty, right? (Note: read link only hits up the Target Zunes, not CC's Zune batch, which is separate.)
