The Pirate Bay Cancels OiNK Replacement
2007-11-27 09:27:00 Slashdot It!The plan behind BOiNK was to re-upload all the lost OiNK torrents to a public tracker called BOiNK. However, it turns out that the music loving pirates didn’t need The Pirate Bay to help them out because several new sites sprung up to replace it mere days after OiNK went down.Pirate Bay admin Brokep, who listed some of these alternatives on his blog a few weeks ago, noticed this as well and decided that BOiNK wasn’t needed anymore. “There are so many people opening up new music trackers right now so there’s no need for us to go and do that as well.” He adds: “It’s simply better for us not to interfere with the music lovers that want their special ratio trackers for only scene releases and so forth. That’s not our specialty! Each to do what they’re best at and what they love the most.” Brokep is right, it looks like former OiNK members, and releasing talent, already moved to other music trackers. Some moved to new trackers such as what.cd and waffles.... More About: The Pirate Bay , Oink , Irate
Why Digg should block users who are sing ad-block softwares
2007-11-27 09:21:00 Slashdot It!The users of sites such as Digg , Netscape, Reddit and StumbleUpon openly endorse Ad Block Plus, a plug-in that blocks advertisement on web sites, and are well known for providing no value to the sites they visit. Software that blocks all advertisement is an infringement of the rights of web site owners and developers. Numerous web sites exist in order to provide quality content in exchange for displaying ads, Digg users who don't click on these ads are stealing bandwidth without paying for it and website owners deserve a method to block this unauthorized bandwith theft.Since social media sites do not allow website owners a method for excluding content and do not obey robots.txt law, abiding webmasters are forced to block all users from social media sites. Demographics have shown that not only are Digg and other social media users a somewhat small and insignificant percentage of the internet, they actually are even smaller in terms of online spending, therefore blocking ... Boeing Achieves First Submerged Unmanned Undersea Vehicle Recovery by a Sub
2007-11-27 03:46:00 Slashdot It!The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] has successfully demonstrated for the first time that an unmanned undersea vehicle (UUV) can be recovered by an underway submerged submarine, opening up new possibilities for advanced naval operations.During recent tests, a U.S. Navy attack submarine launched the AN/BLQ-11 UUV from one of its torpedo tubes. The vehicle, formerly called the Long-term Mine Reconnaissance System (LMRS), then returned to the vessel, where the system's robotic arm retrieved it into the submarine. "With this recent success, Boeing has taken another important step in UUV development by demonstrating that the unmanned vehicle can return to the submarine and be recovered by a robotic arm," said Dan Jones, director of Boeing Advanced Information Systems, a division of Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems. "This milestone represents a critical next step for the U.S. Navy and opens the door for a whole new set of advanced submarine missions."The at-sea UUV tests follo... What if Gmail is designed by Microsoft
2007-11-27 03:24:00 Slashdot It!Today I want to ponder the question: what if Microsoft , not Google, had created Gmail ? What would be the differences in that web mail client for users today? What if we apply some of the same design rules that brought us Hotmail, for instance? To start, here’s the current Gmail homepage after you log-in: First of all, we need to rebrand the application name to something longer. Let’s call this Windows Live Gmail, and add some of the visual elements connected with Windows. Also, as in Hotmail, there needs to be less space for the email subjects to make place for a reading pane, which is full of verbose explanatory help text*: *Not shown in the screenshot, we’ll also throw in a security measurement that will prevent you from clicking on links in emails, unless you discovered the switch to mark a mail as safe. Another security measurement we’ll add is that you won’t be able to log-in with just username anymore but are required to enter the full username@gmail...

BitTorrent Comic Tracker Re-Opens Despite Marvel and DC Threats
2007-11-26 09:33:00 Slashdot It!A few days ago we reported on the legal pressures being experienced by the Z-Cult FM comic tracker. At the time, site admin ‘Serj’ explained: “We got legal letters from both Marvel and DC Comic s who have been working together to send us these legal threats. We are currently dealing with the legal issues and they have given us 3 days before they are forced to take anymore action.”Since then, the Z-Cult FM trackers haven’t been operating as the admins try to sort out the legal issues. In the first instance, Marvel Comics demanded that Z-Cult FM respond to their demands within 3 days which they have been trying to do. However, the staff concerned at Marvel went off on their Thanksgiving break and were unavailable to discuss anything with the Z-Cult FM admins.Additionally, Marvel has been demanding certain files from Z-Cult FM - files they don’t have, admin ‘Serj’ told TorrentFreak:“Z-Cult pointed out that we do not in fact hold any of the files that Marvel... PS3 sales jump in US on heels of price cut
2007-11-26 02:03:00 Slashdot It!Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 have been given a boost in North America since it cut the price of the console and introduced a cheaper version at the beginning of November. The company said Thursday that combined sales of the older 80GB model and the new 40GB model have increased by 192 percent at the top-10 major retailers in North America and "more than doubled" overall. After seeing poor sales all year the company cut the price of the 80GB model from US$599 to US$499, and introduced a cheaper US$399 version on Nov. 2, with a lower capacity hard-disk drive. In addition to the smaller drive, the cheaper version lacks the ability to play PlayStation 2 titles. The higher sales are good news for Sony, which has been running in third place in the console battle in the U.S. In October, 121,000 PlayStation 3 consoles were shipped, according to estimates from NPD Group. That ranks it lower than the seven-year-old PlayStation 2, which shipped 184,000 units in the month. The market... More About: Price , Jump , Heels
Asus eeePC violates GPL say Linux stalwarts
2007-11-26 02:01:00 Slashdot It!Members of the Linux community have complained that the hot new sub-notebook from Asus , the eeePC, may have violated the spirit of the Linux General Public License (GPL). Some Linux advocates claim the eeePC has not included required source code with the installed Xandros Linux distribution and does not easily enable users to install another distro. However, there are indications that eeePC fans probably don't care. The Asus eeePC has been hailed widely as abreakthrough product that could finally succeed in markedly increasingthe penetration of Linux in the consumer computing marketspace. However, some Linux purists are upset that the eeePC uses Xandros, aDebian-based distribution which charges license fees and has a similarpatent protection agreement with Microsoft to the one signed 12 monthsago by Novell. However, the latest complaint has more to do with the modication of aparticular module of the underlying Linux kernel concerned withmanaging the hardware interfaces of ... Expert scares world with VoIP hacking proof
2007-11-25 12:26:00 Slashdot It!An expert has released a proof-of-concept program to show how easy it would be for criminals to eavesdrop on the VoIP-based phone calls of any company using the technology.Called SIPtap, the software is able to monitor multiple Voice-over-IP (VoIP) call streams, listening in and recording them for remote inspection as .wav files. All that the criminal would need would be to infect a single PC inside the network with a Trojan incorporating these functions, although the hack would work at ISP level as well. The program can index 'IP-tapped' calls by caller - using SIP identity information - and by recipient, and even by date. Running from August this year until the most recent tap on November 21st, SIPtap had no problems in extracting enough information on the test network to prove that call recording of any and every VoIP call at a hypothetical company was now a trivial exercise.SIPtap demonstrates that the worst-case nightmares of VoIP vulnerability are now well within ... Skype encryption stumps police
2007-11-25 12:24:00 Slashdot It!German police are unable to decipher the encryption used in the internet telephone software Skype to monitor calls by suspected criminals and terrorists, Germany's top police officer said.Skype allows users to make telephone calls over the internet from their computer to other Skype users free of charge.Law enforcement agencies and intelligence services have used wiretaps since the telephone was invented, but implementing them is much more complex in the modern telecommunications market where the providers are often foreign companies."The encryption with Skype telephone software ... creates grave difficulties for us," Joerg Ziercke, president of Germany's Federal Police Office (BKA) told reporters at an annual gathering of security and law enforcement officials."We can't decipher it. Apple Pops Some of Burst's Patent Claims
2007-11-25 12:21:00 Slashdot It!A little bruised, Burst.com will live to fight another day in its dispute with Apple over patents it claims the company infringes on in its popular iPod and iTunes music store.Apple tried to invalidate parts of four of the tiny Santa Rosa, Calif., company's patents related to compression; high-speed transmission; and sharing, editing and playing audio and video on computers in a summary judgment motion. In a ruling Thursday, U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel invalidated 14 claims, leaving 22 claims remaining. Observers say it's a good start for Apple and its lawyers at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, but added they'll have to do more to get rid of Burst, which got Microsoft to cough up a $60 million settlement and a licensing agreement in a similar patent dispute in 2005."The fact that they knocked out 14 claims on summary judgment is good," said James Gatto, who heads Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman's IP practice. Intel Opens First High-Volume 45nm Microprocessor Manufacturing Factory
2007-10-27 11:10:00 Slashdot It!Production of a new generation of microprocessors for PCs, laptops, servers and other computing devices officially began today inside of Intel Corporation's first high-volume 45 nanometer (nm) manufacturing factory in Chandler, Ariz.Called "Fab 32," the $3 billion factory will use Intel's innovative 45nm process technology based on Intel's breakthrough in "reinventing" certain areas of the transistors inside its processors to reduce energy leakage. The 45nm transistors use a Hafnium-based high-k material for the gate dielectric and metal materials for the gate, and are so small that more than 2 million can fit on the period at the end of this sentence. Millions of these tiny transistors will make up Intel's faster, more energy efficient lead- and halogen-free processors for PCs, laptops and servers, as well as ultra low-power processors for mobile Internet and consumer electronic devices, and low-cost PCs. A recent Sony Brand Wave study conducted in five countries including the UK, Australia, France Germany and Spain revealed that a key reason that consumers are buying a PS3 is because it includes a Blu-ray player.Recent GFK research reveals that the recently launched Xbox 360 HD DVD attach player is not selling well. Microsoft dials up phone ambitions
2007-10-27 09:37:00 Slashdot It!After years of planning its move into telephony, Microsoft is finally ready to start taking calls. At an event here Tuesday morning, Chairman Bill Gates and Business Division President Jeff Raikes formally launched several products that are key to Microsoft's strategy of offering "unified communications" for businesses--that is, software for bringing together e-mail, instant messaging, voice mail and telephony. The event took place at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium--a venue better known for rock concerts than tech launches. It kicked off with fog machines pumping and a rock musician playing an electric guitar signed by Gates."The era of dialing blind, the era of playing phone tag, the era of voice-mail jam...that era is ending," Raikes said at the event. He noted phone numbers themselves are the product of the technology limitations of the era in which they were developed. "I don't want to get in touch with your number," Raikes said. Sony's profit up
2007-10-26 09:36:00 Slashdot It!Sony swung to a quarterly operating profit as it booked strong sales of personal computers and digital cameras and benefited from a weaker yen, and it raised its full-year forecast by 2 percent. The profit jump also reflected the absence of hefty costs booked in the same quarter last year to recall faulty PC batteries, as well as lower marketing expenses in the pictures division and a gain on the sale of land. The results could support the view among some investors that Sony remains on a recovery track after cutting thousands of jobs and ditching unprofitable businesses to focus on core electronics products such as Cyber-shot digital cameras and Bravia LCD TVs.Sony's game division continues to lose money, however, as it was forced to sell its PlayStation 3 game console at a loss in a bid to keep up with rival Nintendo, which is reshaping the industry with its hot-selling Wii console."It seems that it's making good progress even though problems remain," said Mitsushige Ak... Asustek Eee PC price
2007-10-26 08:44:00 Slashdot It!One of the major reasons that Asustek Computer increased the retail price of its low-priced Eee PC is that the price for 7-inch panels rose sharply during the first half of 2007, according to sources.Asustek started to offer its low-cost Eee PC notebooks in Taiwan recently with pricing at online retailers at around NT$11,655 (US$358). This is much higher than the price of US$199 Asustek originally promoted for the portable PC.As demand for small- to medium-size LCD panels was running tight during the first half of 2007, prices for 7-inch panels increased to US$30 during the second quarter, compared to less than US$20 at the beginning of this year, noted the sources. The quotes are far more expensive that those expected by Asustek. The average selling price (ASP) for a 7-inch panel is presently at around US$28, the sources noted.Panel makers pointed out that Asustek originally expected to secure 7-inch panels with an ASP of US$15.
