All platforms: Firefox 3, the next version of everyone's favorite cross-platform browser, has released a public beta for early adopters, web developers and other curious souls. New features include a Places Organizer for bookmarks and saved searches, a plug-in manager for the likes of Flash, Java and other helpers, and many more improvements and changes. Like any beta, there are still a few bugs to be smoothed out, and none of my extensions from Firefox 2 worked in this version. Nanotechnology researcher Michael Zaiser says that with the progress the tech world is making, handheld supercomputer is less than two decades away"If things continue to go the way they have been in the past few decades, then it's 10 years," said Michael Zaiser, a professor and researcher at the University of Edinburgh School of Engineering and Electronics. "The human brain is very good at working on microprocessor problems, so I think we are close -- 10 years, maybe 15." Zaiser's research into nanowires should help move that timeline along. For the last five years, he has been studying how tiny wires -- 1,000 times thinner than a human hair -- behave when manipulated. He explained that each such miniscule wire tends to behave differently when put under the same amount of pressure. For example, it's important to look for not just functionality but also frequent updates, a healthy user community, and the availability of professional support. Some points are still true today, but new offerings may get you rethinking the role of these products in your enterprise. VOIP and PacketCable have continued to improve, but both services still lag behind PSTN, according to a study by Keynote Systems.The study used indicators such as service availability, call completion percentage and audio delay to test 12 different VOIP and PacketCable phone services for their reliability, responsiveness and clarity. The study then compared the VOIP and PacketCable indicators with those of PSTN services from AT&T and Verizon. Just over a year ago, I was pontificating that China's massive carbon footprint was due to the fact that we've exported our dirty industries there - in fact those who know me will tell you I've been like a cracked record on this one. Clean air settlement to cost AEP over $4 billion

AEP spokesman Pat Hemlepp disputed the $4.6 billion figure and pointed out that the number did not appear anywhere in the consent decree filed in a U.S. district court in Ohio on Tuesday. The 121-page settlement came the day that a trial was scheduled to begin.EPA's Nakayama called the $4.6 billion figure "a solid and conservative number," and said it would probably end up higher because it does not include operating costs."It's fair to say that those things were not in the plans in 1999 when this case was first brought," Nakayama said."We are doing these projects to comply with existing or upcoming environmental regulations, not because of some sort of requirement in the settlement agreement," Hemlepp countered.
