GNOME 2.20.0 Package Deadline

This Wednesday will be the release of GNOME 2.20.0, and today is the tarball package due date for all packages wishing to make the release deadline. Many of the packages are already checked in and you can view the announcements on the gnome-announce-list. Look for the official GNOME 2.20 announcement this Wednesday.

OpenOffice.org 2.3.0 Quietly Released

The official release of OpenOffice.org 2.3.0 is scheduled for Monday, September 17, but it is available already. OpenOffice.org 2.3.0 introduces a number of new features and changes for all OpenOffice.org components. There is a new charting wizard, the ability to create Wiki pages using a new Filter in the OpenOffice.org Writer, and performance improvements are among the many changes found in the OpenOffice.org 2.3 branch. The OpenOffice Wiki places the release on September 17 and there are not yet any references from the main OpenOffice.org website to this new version, but can be found on OpenOffice.org mirrors driven (such as OSUOSL). Just head on over to a mirror and through the Mozilla Bouncer interface choose OpenOffice.org-2.3.0 along with your platform and locale. Don't fork Linux because of Linus

I recently read a blog entry on InfoWorld.com that urged the Linux community to fork the kernel into desktop and server versions because, according to the author, all Linus Torvalds cares about is big iron. Sorry, but that?s both wrong and stupid. Author Randall Kennedy depicts Con Kolivas, touted as the ?champion of all things desktop centric,? as ?the victim of an ideological rift within the Linux community? who has given up on Linux because his scheduler patch has been rejected. Kennedy asserts Torvalds and his ??geekerati? underlings ? are mostly concerned with promoting Linux within the enterprise ? i.e. Projects involving lots of parallel CPUs, massive storage and high-end TPC results.?

Microsoft is making the third service pack for Office 2003 available for free download Sept. 18, which the company says strengthens the product?s defenses against malicious software. ?While SP3 will be available as a free download on Sept. 18, customers will also begin to get notified of its availability via Microsoft?s AutoUpdate over the next few weeks,? a Microsoft spokesperson told eWEEK.
