Canon 5D Mark II rumors: The day after the new rumor
2008-03-12 00:57:00 It's been twenty-four hours since the dpreview forums went ablaze with this post discussing the potential 5D Mark II spec sheet. Check it out for yourselves! The forum poster says that this won't be announced at Photokina 2008, but rather in late April 2008!Again, please keep in mind this is posted by a forum user, and it is not by any means an official Canon announcement. That of course doesn't necessarily mean it's right or wrong. We have no way of knowing either way. We blog, you decide! Some other key features mentioned in that thread include a 15mp CMOS 35mm full frame sensor, dual core DIGIC III chipset, weather sealing, ISO to the moon, new AF sensor, microlens fine-adjustments, $3500 list price, and early June availability. There are about 30 posts in the second thread in the series as of right now. Needless to say the first one has filled up (151 posts). And what do the Nikon DSLR users think? And how would this 5D Mk 2 affect the D300? Well, for one thing, the 5D Mk 2 is... More About: Rumor , Rumors

2008-03-12 00:43:00 We have an impact review of the Nikon D300 by Nikon super-guru Thom Hogan ! What did Thom think? Well, we won't reveal it here, you have to check it out for yourselves. And some foreshadowing perhaps, the subtitle of the review is "is it better than the D2X at 1/3rd the cost?"For all our coverage of the Nikon D3 and D300 mania, be sure to check all the posts with that tag.For a list of D300 reviews and previews, be sure to check the DSLR Review Matrix.Reactions to the reviewBe sure to check what the Nikonians think of the new D300 review.Tons of disussions of the Nikon D300 at the dpreview Nikon SLR talk forum.Welcome to our full-text feed! New Amazon Top Sellers Charts posted!
2008-03-11 21:59:00 We have episode #8 of the Amazon top sellers charts soap opera just posted. In this episode, the Canon 40D has a fight with the D300 over noise, while the Canon SD1100-IS goes on a date with the Panasonic TZ3. Meanwhile the Sony S730 has a big surprise that shocks her parents. And who is going to claim the inheritance of the Canon G9? Joking aside, there wasn't a whole lot of drama in this episode. Here is a screenshot teaser. For the whole top 25, along with the cameras just outside, be sure to check the latest Camera Charts .As you can see from above, the $300 price point suits the Panasonic FZ18 quite well, as it remains in the top 10. This 18x superzoom started at $400 when it was announced, and it probably upset Fuji, Canon and Olympus because their superzooms were at $500, and were forced to "crash" down to $400.Meanwhile the Canon G9 continues to remain at around $460+ at the reputable retailers, which is interesting to observe, putting the Ricoh GX100 actually below it in ter... Mayima and Phase One combine for 645 AF DV (computer-translated)
2008-03-11 06:25:00 Digitalcamera.jp has the latest update from Mamiya and Phase One on the medium format world (computer-translated). Also computer-translated the March 10 joint press release. This is good timing for them given Pentax's recent 645 comment. We can't make too much from the computer-translated text, but this looks like a modular system, and can take digital backs from other manufacturers as well. Shutter speed ranges from 1/4000 to 60 minutes. It will be shown at PIE (Photo Imaging Expo) 2008 next week. NOTE: This is based on computer-translated text!!!This will be updated when we find out more, or when the press releases come out in english. New feature under development: Brand-specific fans clubs!
2008-03-11 03:28:00 We have a new feature under development, brand-specific semi-interactive "fan club" pages. Each page will concentrate on a specific brand, and will summarize our posts here pertaining to that brand, along with other websites and forums that cover the brand, and to make it semi-interactive, we will also list websites, blogs, galleries, or web 2.0 from users and fans of that specific brand. It's easier to explain it with an example, and Pentax has been chosen as the victim first brand to get a "noisy fan club". We usually use Pentax and Panasonic for new features because they have a more manageable product line-up, compared to Canon and Nikon. This makes it easier to adjust and adapt new features before they get rolled out for the remaining brands. The first edition of the "Pentax Noisy Fan Club" will be posted within one hour! Update! The first edition of the Pentax fan club has been posted!Welcome to our full-text feed! Hope you are enjoying this new feature! More About: Fans , Clubs , Development , Feature , Brand
Impact Review: Leica 14-50 f3.8-5.6 by Photozone
2008-03-11 00:56:00 We have an impact review for you! Photozone has just posted their review of the Leica 14-50 f3.8-5.6 MegaOIS lens, a Leica-sonic lens for Four Thirds that is bundled with the Panasonic L10 DSLR. This lens not to be confused with the more expensive lens included with the L1, that's a different lens (f2.8-3.5) but also 14-50mm.As you may recall, Olympus has chosen the sensor-shift stabilization route, while Panasonic, which offers optical image stabilization on every non-DSLR digital camera in their line-up, even their $100 LS-series, ironically does not offer sensor-shift stabilization, but instead offers optically stabilized Leica-sonic lenses. So what did PhotoZone discover in their three page report? Be sure to check their conclusions (Verdict on page 3) where the reviewers express their opinion on how this lens compares to the Sony 16-105 DT and the Canon 17-85 EF-S USM IS. As always, we do not want to spoil the findings, you have to find out for yourselves :)And a hat-tip to Pho... More About: Review
The Charts: Top sellers at Amazon (new episode)
2008-03-10 23:21:00 We have a new episode of the Charts , our on-going snapshot-to-snapshot soap opera of the best selling digital cameras at Amazon . In today's episode we have the attack of the Elves, but no, we are not talking about Lord of the Rings. But the biggest noise (pun intended?) was made by the Panasonic FZ18, dropping in price to the psychological barrier of $300, and jumping into the top ten. Here is a screenshot teaser of the top 25. For the whole top 25, be sure to visit the Camera Charts blog. The attack of the Elves in the intro is referring to the release of the Canon SD1100 IS. Even though it is available in multiple deliciously fashionable colors, the various colors are moving on up. One of them has jumped into the top 25 already, and another one is knocking on the door. As if there weren't enough Canon cameras in the top 25 :-)Welcome to our full-text feed! Hope you are enjoying this new feature! More About: Episode , Sellers , The Charts

Fuji IS-1 for $550, Pentax V10 shipping and Seagull temptations
2008-03-10 19:33:00 Welcome to an unplanned edition of the Noisy Shopper. While digging around the internets we found enough materials for an impromptu edition of the Noisy Shopper!Falling in love with Foveon once again?Fell in and then out of love with Foveon? Now you can fall in love with Foveon again. Spring is in the air, the flowers are blooming, and all the colors are begging to be captured with Foveon pixels ;-) The Sigma SD14 body only is offered by Cameta on Amazon for $600.The Fuji IS-1 gets an instant rebateAn instant $250 rebate has created some nice bargains on the Fuji IS-1 at Adorama. The IS-1 is an infrared-sensitive version of the Fuji S9xxx series, but it does have a rather bizarre end user license agreement (EULA) that tries to restrict its usage. But that's a story for another day. You do have to fax Fuji a signed EULA before the item ships! Twilight Zone? The Fuji IS-1 is now down to $550 at Adorama! If you prefer a special starter kit with IR and IR cut filters, the price is $750... More About: Shipping , Pentax , Seagull , Temptations

Best selling cameras at Map Cameras in Japan
2008-03-10 02:48:00 We have a new edition of The Charts, this time, the best sellers for February 2008, at Map Camera in Japan . Details at DigitalCamera.jp, and Map Camera. Please keep in mind Map Camera is not representative of the overall market, think of it as a camera store for dpreview forum users, than for the average consumer :)And with that in mind, we find the lovely Ricoh GRD II remaining at the #1 spot. Ricoh fans, rejoice! The powerful Nikon D3 jumps into the top ten at #6, which means that they do have them in-stock in Japan, unlike the US! Also entering the top ten is the Sony A200. Meanwhile the Panasonic LX2 grabs the #2 spot, while the Pentax K10D jumps five spots, despite the announcement of the K20D and K200D.For the whole top ten and the top twenty used cameras, be sure to check the DigitalCamera.jp MapCamera page. And speaking of The Used (music reference?), we have the who's who of used Nikon and Canon DSLRs in the top 20. A couple of top 20 surprises perhaps are the Epson R-D1 and... More About: Selling , Cameras
Noisy Round-up: What new digital cameras did you miss in 2008?
2008-03-09 21:12:00 If you haven't been following the digital camera market in 2008, what did you miss? Well, let's take a look! Think of this as the equivalent of a season recap TV episode! Some announcements came with a lot of noise, others were sneaked in at midnight like the Olympus E420 DSLR, and its companion 25mm pancake lens, both Four Thirds of course. And then there was the leak of the Panasonic FX500, a camera that is similar yet a little bit different from the Panasonic FX35.Meanwhile Amateur Photographer UK has had a series of serious of camera scoops, from the firing of the Leica CEO, to the comments by the Sigma founder that a new Sigma SD15 DSLR and new Sigma DP2 and DP3 are coming up.One of the underdogs, Ricoh, quietly announced the Ricoh R8, a camera using the new 10mp 1/2.33" sensor, and having a versatile 28-200mm lens, in 35mm equivalency of course. This was a follow-up to their Ricoh R7, but it also borrowed some ideas and features from the more "grown up" models in the Ricoh lin... Pre-ordering: Olympus E420 and 25mm pancake lens at Amazon!
2008-03-08 19:31:00 Great news for fans of the Olympus E420 and the 25mm f2.8 pancake lens. They are listed at Amazon for pre-ordering!You can pre-order the lovely Olympus 25mm f2.8 pancake for just $250. Now this creates an interesting contrast with the Sigma DP1 which pre-orders at $800.Amazon estimates shipment date as May 20, 2008, but Amazon's estimates are conservative, perhaps so that they don't have people banging on their doors asking "where is my camera???".For more on the E420 and the pancake lens, be sure to check our coverage of the midnight announcement.Welcome to our full-text feed! Now Shipping: Pentax K200D and Fuji F100fd
2008-03-08 01:32:00 As you can see, it is shipping season! The waves and waves of new cameras announced in January 2008 are starting to ship one by one. This is causing the list of pre-orders to shrink, which is music to the ears of potential buyers! And without further ado, the Pentax K200D is now shipping at Amazon, for $700 body only, with free shipping. Also available is the K200d with 18-55 DA kit lens for $800 and free shipping. But ultimately, we can only buy what is made, which leads to compromises. And with the exception perhap...
Goodbye Pentax 645D, but not digital medium format says Pentax
2008-03-07 17:25:00 We were checking our favorite Japanese site Digital Camera.jp, and we noticed that Pentax is officially pulling the plug on the 645D medium format camera, but they are not giving up on medium format digital.
