Yahoo Confirms Rejection Letter to Microsoft
2008-02-11 16:29:00 Source : Technews 2 U YAHOO! BOARD OF DIRECTORS SAYS MICROSOFT’S PROPOSAL SUBSTANTIALLY UNDERVALUES YAHOO! Sunnyvale, Calif., February 11, 2008 — Yahoo ! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO), a leading global Internet company, today said the Yahoo! Board of Directors has carefully reviewed Microsoft ’s unsolicited proposal with Yahoo!’s management team and financial and legal advisors and has unanimously concluded that the proposal is not in the best interests of Yahoo! and our stockholders. After careful evaluation, the Board believes that Microsoft’s proposal substantially undervalues Yahoo! including our global brand, large worldwide audience, significant recent investments in advertising platforms and future growth prospects, free cash flow and earnings potential, as well as our substantial unconsolidated investments. Yahoo’s Dilemma
2008-02-11 16:28:00 Source : Top Tech News Yahoo’s board of directors planned to meet Friday to discuss Microsoft ’s offer to purchase the multifaceted Web company for $44.6 billion. CEO Jerry Yang clearly does not want to become part of Microsoft and has been scurrying to put together a deal to counter the offer. One possible white knight was the Japanese telecom company SoftBank, which owns a 41 percent share of Yahoo Japan and 3.9 percent of Yahoo. But Thursday night, SoftBank said it was not interested in making a bid. The other offer on the table is a bit murkier. According to press reports, Google has offered to take over Yahoo’s search business for a sizable chunk of change. Such an arrangement in fraught with antitrust hazards but would give Yahoo more operating revenue. Execs Pushing for Google The TechCrunch blog reported that Yahoo’s outside consultants are recommending it take Microsoft’s offer, but “a contingent of senior executives at Yahoo, who are wil... Why Microsoft needs Yahoo
2008-02-10 16:33:00 Source : NewYork Times Nearly a quarter-century ago, the mantra “information wants to be free” heralded an era in which news, entertainment and personal communications would flow at no charge over the Internet. Now comes a new rallying cry: software wants to be free. Or, as the tech insiders say, it wants to be “zero dollar.” A growing number of consumers are paying just that — nothing. This is the Internet’s latest phase: people using freely distributed applications, from e-mail and word processing programs to spreadsheets, games and financial management tools. They run on distant, massive and shared data centers, and users of the services pay with their attention to ads, not cash. While such services have been emerging for years, their rapid adoption has been an important but largely overlooked driver of the $44.6 billion hostile bid that Microsoft made to take over Yahoo this week. That proposed deal would give Microsoft access to Yahoo’s vast news, information, se... More About: Yahoo!
Understanding the difference between Forums, Blogs, and Social Networks
2008-02-09 16:39:00 Nice article i came across….. Forums are like social mixers, where everyone is at equal level, milling about and discussing with others. These many to many communication tools allow anyone to start a topic and anyone to respond to one. Members are often at equal level, and content is usually segmented by topic. (rather than by people). Blogs are like a keynote speech where the speaker (blogger) is in control of the discussion, but allows questions and comments from the audience. Blogs are journals often authored by one individual, and sometimes teams. In the context of business communication, these are often used to talk with the marketplace and to join the conversation that existing external bloggers may be having. Social Networks are like topic tables at a conference luncheon. Ever been to a conference where different lunch tables had big white signs inviting people to sit and join others of like interest? It’s like that. Social networks allow members to organize around ... More About: Social Networks

What does KM mean to NASA?
2008-01-18 13:50:00 For those of you interested in KM, here is how NASA does it…. What is Knowledge Management? Knowledge management is getting the right information to the right people at the right time, and helping people create knowledge and share and act upon information in ways that will measurably improve the performance of NASA and its partners. For NASA this means delivering the systems and services that will help our employees and partners get the information they need to make better decisions. There are three priority areas where KM systems and processes can help NASA’s ability to deliver its missions: To sustain NASA’s knowledge across missions and generations KM activities will identify and capture the information that exists across the Agency To help people find, organize, and share the knowledge we already have KM processes will help to efficiently manage the Agency’s knowledge resources To increase collaboration and to facilitate knowledge creation and sh... Sony HALVES PS3 build cost!
2008-01-17 15:06:00 Source : Cnet Historically, console manufacturers have made a loss on the hardware itself and recouped their losses on the resulting software sales. Although Nintendo has claimed that the Wii has been making money since day one, the PlayStation 3 costs Sony money for every unit sold. However, according to a report in Business Week, the Japanese manufacturer has managed to halve the cost of making the console since launch. The PlayStation 3 launched in the US in November 2006, and during March 2007 in Europe. The article quotes Nikko Citigroup analyst Kota Ezawa, who believes that each PlayStation 3 now costs approximately US$400 to make, as opposed to US$800 at its US launch. He puts this reduction down to a number of factors, including Sony’s tweaking of the design as well as the shrinking of the internal chips. Ezawa did not specify whether he was referring to the recently introduced 40GB or Sony’s flagship 80GB model, neither of which was available at launch in the US... More About: Cost , Build
The Apple “Time” Capsule…
2008-01-17 15:04:00 Source : ZDNet Apple ’s Time Capsule, announced today at the Macworld press conference, promises Mac and PC data backup over a wireless network. Time Capsule is essentially an Airport Extreme Base Station with a 500GB or 1TB hard drive built in. The 500GB version goes for $299, and the 1TB version for $499. Both are currently for sale via pre-order, with an unspecified February ship date. Upside: When Time Capsule does ship, it appears that it will be the only device out there that combines an 802.11n wireless access point and basic network attached storage. Apple’s old Airport Extreme access point comes close, in that it has 802.11n and can accept an external hard drive via a USB port. Time Capsule looks like a more complete, self-contained solution. We love the idea of seamless data backup, and in Time Capsule we think Apple is on the right track. As much as we like HP’s MediaSmart Server, its name is intimidating, and the features it provides are a bit complex...
Open Sesame - Yahoo Quest!!
2008-01-16 17:11:00 Source : NYTimes For months, Yahoo chief executive Jerry Yang has been talking about swinging open the doors to the Yahoo portal. A key goal, he has said again and again, is to turn Yahoo into a set of platforms for third-party publishers and developers. Jerry Yang gives the Yahoo! gesture after his keynote address. (Photo: Paul Sakuma/Associated Press) But Mr. Yang, who co-founded Yahoo 13 years ago and became chief executive last summer, rarely gave details about what a more open Yahoo would look like. Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show, he opened the kimono just a bit. First, he unveiled Yahoo’s new mobile platform, which I wrote about in Monday’s paper. Next, he gave a peek at what a more open Yahoo could do for users. Warning: This was only a concept demo, not a product, as Mr. Yang stressed on several occasions. Then, Mr. Yang went on to showcase a new prototype version of Yahoo Mail, which was more communications hub than e-mail client. In one window, the softwar... More About: Open , Sesame , Quest
Microsoft Warns of New Excel Vulnerability
2008-01-16 17:07:00 Source : PC World Attackers are exploiting a vulnerability that lies within several versions of the Excel spreadsheet program, Microsoft warned late Tuesday. The problem in Excel allows a hacker to create a malicious Excel document that when opened can compromise a computer, Microsoft said in an advisory. The vulnerability could allow remote code to be executed on a computer, which means a user risks having their personal data exposed. Microsoft downplayed the risk, saying only targeted attacks have been seen. But since Microsoft Excel documents are commonly used for business, vulnerabilities such as this pose a greater risk. “Users are familiar with the document being sent to them and are likely to open it,” wrote security analyst Maarten Van Horenbeeck, in a commentary on the Web site for the SANS Internet Storm Center, which monitors Internet threats. The vulnerability is within the Microsoft Office Excel 2003 Service Pack 2, Microsoft Office Excel Viewer 2003, Micr... More About: Vulnerability
Hubble to get an upgrade!
2008-01-14 16:32:00 Source : NewScientistSpace Space shuttle astronauts will attempt an unprecedented in-orbit repair of key Hubble Space Telescope (HST) instruments during the servicing mission scheduled for August 2008. The repairs, along with the addition of two new instruments, will make Hubble 90 times as powerful as it was after its flawed optics were corrected in 1993. In October 2006, NASA announced plans to carry out a fourth and final servicing mission for Hubble, in which it would install two new scientific instruments and replace the observatory’s batteries and gyroscopes. But previously the agency has not said whether it would attempt a difficult repair of two key instruments that have broken down in recent years. The Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), which died in January 2007, was Hubble’s highest resolution camera and its most-used instrument. And the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), which failed in 2004, measured light spectra in the ultraviolet, allowing it to...
Amazon goes head to head with Apple
2008-01-14 16:21:00 The big story in the music world is that Amazon .com announced this Thursday that it would start selling music from Song BMG without the restrictive digital rights management software. This makes Sony the last of the major record labels to embrace the open format. “DRM is dying,” Tim Bajarin, principal analyst with Creative Strategies, said in an interview. “Basically all the studios are embracing” the DRM-free model because “they have to give consumers what they want,” he said. “There are enough people who will pay for DRM-free music that it becomes a viable part of the business.” Amazon has stepped up its game to ensure that it doesn’t not fall behind Apple ’s iTunes behemoth. If you recall it was Apple CEO Steve Jobs who started the movement of distributing DRM-free music. A move that has caused most of the music industry to fall in line, this is simply because they’ve realized that they need to give the consumer what he/sh... More About: Head
The FBI forgot to pay their phone bill!!
2008-01-12 11:41:00 Source : Yahoo News A Justice Department audit released Thursday blamed the lost connections on the FBI’s lax oversight of money used in undercover investigations. In one office alone, unpaid costs for wiretaps from one phone company totaled $66,000. In at least one case, a wiretap used in a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act investigation “was halted due to untimely payment,” the audit found. FISA wiretaps are used in the government’s most sensitive and secretive criminal and intelligence investigations, and allow eavesdropping on suspected terrorists or spies. “We also found that late payments have resulted in telecommunications carriers actually disconnecting phone lines established to deliver surveillance results to the FBI, resulting in lost evidence,” according to the audit by Inspector General Glenn A. Fine. More than half of 990 bills to pay for telecommunication surveillance in five unidentified FBI field offices were not paid on time,... More About: Phone , Bill
