AOL buys social network Bebo for $850 million
2008-03-13 16:14:00 Source : Cnet News This post was expanded at 6:43 AM PT with details from the AOL-Bebo conference call. In an unexpected move, AOL has acquired social-networking site Bebo. The price tag: $850 million in cash. Rumors had floated over the past few months that Bebo, which has over 40 million members, was up for sale. Reports suggested a $1 billion price tag, but there were few hints as to potential buyers. Though Bebo had already partnered with AOL’s AIM messaging client to facilitate friend-invite interoperability between the two services, even the most creative blogger speculation didn’t seem to point to AOL eventually buying the social network. Ironically, AOL itself has been talked about as an acquisition target. Jeffrey Bewkes, CEO of Time Warner, which operates AOL, has spoken recently about plans to spin off or sell divisions of the company. AOL has made it clear that buying Bebo is a move geared toward international growth, as the youth-oriented social netw... More About: Social , Network , Social Network , Million

Knowledge Spillover.
2008-02-13 15:24:00 A very interesting article on Knowledge Spillover. Multinational companies (MNCs) invest abroad for many reasons, but invariably the quest for knowledge and information will be a part of the mix. In this paper, shortly to be published in the Journal of International Business Studies, Jasjit Singh, Assistant Professor of Strategy at INSEAD, uses patent citations from 30 countries to explore whether the flow of knowledge between a MNC and host country is one-sided, or if everybody wins. Global economic growth is highly dependent on the diffusion of knowledge around the world, but it rarely comes in a form that can be easily transferred, such as a blueprint or an engineering diagram. Is this the end of the iPhone?
More articles from this author:2008-02-12 15:13:00 Source : APÂ Sony Ericsson on Sunday announced a new premium handset aimed at capturing the web convergence market, blending multimedia with mobile web communication in its first product using Microsoft Corp’s operating system. The Xperia X1 will launch in the second half of 2008 and will be sold worldwide, including in the United States. This is the first time the company is using Microsoft Windows Mobile in a departure from its collaboration with Symbian, an open operating system partly owned by Sony Ericsson. Executives said their focus was on the user experience, not the operating system, and said that many Sony Ericsson signature features, including a patented nine-panel interface, had been built on top of the Windows operating system. Sony Ericsson executive Steve Walker said Microsoft Mobile was the “ideal” platform for the X1. “In the case of the X1, Microsoft gives us an opportunity to build on,” Walker said. But he said that did not necessari... More About: Iphone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 |
