How to: Identify unknown devices in Device Manager
2007-02-02 04:18:10 Ever have a device in your system that you need a driver for and just don’t know what it is or what driver to get? Here’s a simple way to find out. 1) In a browser open this website: The Linux PCI ID Repository 2) Open Device Manager , right click your unknown device, go to Properties, then click the Details tab. If it is not already there, you may need to drop the drop-down menu to: Device Instance Id. You will see a line that looks similar to this below. 3) You’ll notice the 2 arrows pointing to the VEN and DEV, this is what you’ll need. Now go to the website you opened earlier and look for the Ven ID #, in my case: 1095. You will have to click the first number of the Ven ID # on the page directly under All Vendors, mine is 1095, so click 1, once there look for your number. 4) Once you click the Ven ID #, you’ll come to a page with the known (and documented by the owner’s) Devices for that Vendor. In my case 3512. You now know what device ... More About: How To , Unknown , Know

2007-02-02 04:18:10 As read on TechPowerUp! : Paul Thurrott of Paul Thurrott’s SuperSite for Windows managed to find out how to do a clean install of Vista using the upgrade CD without having to use a previous version of Windows. A few days ago we had a post about the new upgrade process for Vista requiring a previous version of Windows to be installed and activated before upgrading. Here are the steps for you to accomplish this: 1) Boot from Vista Upgrade DVD 2) When prompted for Product Code, leave blank, and click next. 3) Select your version of Vista (Important! Be honest otherwise it won’t work), and install. 4) Upon initial boot to desktop run Vista setup in Windows, now enter your Product key. 5) When asked if you want to do Upgrade or Custom, select Custom and choose Clean Install. Windows will install for a second time and you should be able to activate. Other source: DailyTech More About: With , Lean , Tall

Say Adios to Clean Installs with Vista
2007-01-30 04:17:06 It used to be that if you wanted to do a fairly clean install of XP from an upgrade disc, during the install it would simply ask you to insert your Windows 98 or 2000 CD during the installation, however, this is not the convenient truth for Windows Vista . The new procedure for Windows Vista upgrade users is to do a full install of Windows XP, then activate, then run the full upgrade to Vista thereby close to doubling your install time for the full installation. Although this is an important step for Microsoft in the war on anti-piracy of their O/S, it is a strong inconvenience for those wanting to do just a simple upgrade. Just make sure you keep this in mind when your out to purchase your new copy of Vista. More About: With , Lean , Clean , Tall

Use you GMail account as an extra hard drive
2007-01-25 04:10:13 GMail Drive is a shell extension for XP that allows you to use your Gmail account as an extra mountable hard drive for extra storage. The extension will actually create a new drive in your My Computer folder allowing for drag and drop use. The extension creates an e-mail and posts it to your account and then periodically checks your account for new files and to rebuild the directory structures. The one downside… the extension is experimental so the filename size must be less than 65 charachters, and if the Gmail system were to ever change their system, the tool could be rendered useless. Hacker releases Blu-Ray ripping utility
2007-01-24 04:09:06 Muslix64, the same encryption hacker that wrote the decryption scheme for the HD-DVD standard has released yet another decryption utility for the other famous standard Blu-Ray . The new utility named BackupBluRay was released in its very early development stage with very limited capability as the user must know the CPS unit key in order for the decryption to work. Muslix64 uses the Doom9.org Forums for his releases and statements, where other statements can be seen with people claiming to have used his utility successfully. Apparently, Muslix64 was able to successfully decrypt the content of the BD-Rom (Blu-Ray disc) from the contents of the disc and by using a memory dump. Muslix64’s previous utility for decrypting HDDVD is now hosted on the SourceForge site, and surely his new utility will make its way onto the site as well. Why worry about what they are using? The adult entertainment industry raked in over $4 Billion dollars in 2005, according to sources. Sources also say that at least 35% of these sales are affluent individuals with incomes over $75,000 who can afford Hi-Def players. When you see the final numbers you begin to understand just how big this win is for the HD DVD standard, the same standard currently used in the XBox 360.
