Big Things from a Tiny World
2007-09-22 07:16:00
New nanotechnology brochure released. The world of nanotechnology can be difficult for a non-scientist to grasp, and few publications for general readers exist. Now, the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO), with assistance from scientists in the 26 agencies of the National Nanotechnology Initiative, has produced a brochure that is geared to a broad public: Nanotechnology: Big Things from a Tiny World (PDF - 1.3 MB).?The brochure describes what nanotechnology is, what nanotechnology-related products are available now, and the potential contributions of nanotechnology to address important issues of our time, such as clean, renewable energy, clean water, as well as medical devices and drugs,? said Dr. E. Clayton Teague, Director of the NNCO. ?We've also described potential technological impacts and research that is under way to identify those impacts.?Dr. Teague acknowledged the early feedback from communicators, educators and scientists on the publication contents and ...
Karnataka to set up Rs 100 crore Nano park in Bangalore
2007-08-22 07:19:00
Bangalore, Aug. 21 (PTI): Karnataka would soon come up with the country's first nano park here at a cost of Rs 100 crore, a senior official said today. The Government has shortlisted four 15-acre plots between Nagawara and Jakkur here for the purpose, Secretary in the Department of IT, BT, Science & Technology, M N Vidyashankar said.He said an advisory committee, headed by eminent scientist C N R Rao, would finalise the location for the research and application-oriented nano park, which is expected to be a hub of such activities in the country.

Nanotechnology and Drugs
2007-07-23 07:41:00
By Joey SweeneyThe health industry is enormous today and will only get larger as the baby-boomers reach old age. With this influx of new patients comes an influx in prescriptions for drugs ranging from lowering cholesterol to increasing libidos. With such a wide range of ailments comes a wide range of pharmaceuticals to help them. These drugs are costly to produce and consequently expensive. With such a huge customer base and an increasing demand, this industry will respond to patients? demands by expanding. As drugs become more complex, and increasingly toxic, new modes of delivery are necessary to transport them to the desired sites in the body. Nano technology promises to revolutionize drug delivery by offering targeted administration in addition to more efficient drug dosing.Drugs can be administered orally, topically, intravenously, rectally, or by inhalation. Each method has advantages and disadvantages. When taking a drug by mouth, some of it is decomposed via stomach acids, b...

We can drink Seawater tomorrow
2007-07-14 09:50:00
Many people around the world either do not have clean drinking water or less drinking water. Nano technology supporting filtration, distillation, and energy generation can produce potable water that meets drinking water standards in an environmentally responsible way. Approximately 99.8 percent of the sea water is recovered as drinking water.A water desalination system using carbon nanotube-based membranes could significantly reduce the cost of purifying water from the ocean. The technology could potentially provide a solution to water shortages where populations are expected to soar in areas with few freshwater sources worldwide, where a lack of clean water is a major cause of disease. The new membranes, developed by researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), could reduce the cost of desalination by 75 percent, compared to reverse osmosis methods used today, the researchers say. The membranes, which sort molecules by size and with electrostatic forces, could also s...

What is so special about Nanotechnology?
2007-07-11 12:44:00
So why is nanotechnology going to be the making of a revolution? Simply put, because it will affect almost every aspect of our lives, from the medicines we use, to the power of our computers, the energy supplies we require, the food we eat, the cars we drive, the buildings we live in and the clothes we wear. More importantly, for every area where we can imagine an impact, there will be others no-one has thought of?new capabilities, new products, new markets. Given the breadth of impact, in the short- and medium-term this will be, by and large, a gradual, insidious revolution, creeping into the world around us for many years to come, although in some areas there might be disruptive changes just over the horizon. It is important to realize the diversity of nanotechnology. It is an enabling technology, allowing us to do new things in almost every conceivable technological discipline. Like other enabling technologies, such as the internet, the internal combustion engine, or electricity, ...

Nanotech - the tiny revolution
2007-07-09 13:51:00
Nanotechnology will change the world, the pundits tell us, and people are racing to become a part of the new craze, launching web sites, special reports, companies, and products with the nano prefix. Over two billion dollars a year of government money is being pumped into nanotechnology worldwide, matched by a similar amount from private industry. Yet, despite the plethora of research reports in recent months, few of the pundits seem to have much of a grasp of what nanotechnology encompasses or how it is going to achieve these supposed dramatic effects. Reporting, both from the popular press and respected business sources, all too often mixes up nanotechnologies that are just around the corner with those that are highly speculative or very longterm. At the root of the confusion is an important aspect of nanotechnology that differentiates it from earlier revolutions such as the internet. Although the internet revolution has been enabled by a new technology, it can largely be understo...

The growing interest in, and spending on, Nanotech
2007-06-06 10:00:00
Nanotechnology is a global phenomenon, with critical research being done, and discoveries being made around the world. Our ability to work on the nanoscale is blossoming. A wide range of companies and initiatives has already been established to create specific products based on nanotechnology. Applications have hit the markets already (bulk materials, coatings, sensors) and others are being touted as around the corner (drug-delivery systems, new data storage technologies, fuel cells, nanotube composites). Money is pouring into the field from government, businesses and investors. We'll try here to briefly impart some sense of the scale of this.Note that statistics relating to the world of nanotechnology sometimes have to be approached with caution since it is not always easy to define nanotechnology's boundaries. Many technologies and areas of scientific research, especially in the biological sciences and biotechnology, are tending to be reclassified as nanotechnology. This has som...
