2008-05-04 08:53:00
I’m in Montreal, QC, ready to head out for Pakistan, doing some shopping and meeting some friends. This is the first time I’m writing about my day in a blog entry, so I’m sorry. But I went to Mexx today in Montreal and the woman who was serving me was drop dead gorgeous. She had ...

2008-04-20 09:32:00
In response to Sameer Vasta’s reblog of Barcode Art, here’s some of mine that I did last year for a course in university. I have to add that the examples Vasta showed were the same ones we were shown. Perhaps those are pieces from York students.   All images are copyrighted. ...

The Sale of Culture
2008-04-11 19:10:00
There is no culture, except the one advertising has sold to us through a number of media, mainly television. Our dreams have been packaged and sold to us, a lifestyle - nothing more than an article of trade. We consume this lifestyle and enjoy short bursts of satisfaction, much like an orgasm. Then we want ...

Against the Capitalist Society: Culture Jamming
2008-04-09 03:30:00
Recently, I read an article regarding culture jamming by Kalle Lasn. Broadly speaking, culture jamming is our “belligerent attitude” towards authority, or our instincts to go against authority where information flows from the “powerful to the powerless” in a trickle down style. Culture Jammers are then those who take big risks and commit themselves to ...

10 Things to do During Earth Hour
2008-03-30 01:31:00
So, I’m sure many of you have switched off your lights but are still on your laptops or PC’s with the screen dimmed down. There’s a half hour to go and you should make the most of your time. Here’s the top 10 things you can do during Earth Hour to make it enjoyable. Note: this can get dirty.  1. Walk around naked. 2. Feel up a member of the opposite sex (someone you don’t know) but don’t run away. 3. Call someone a nazi in their face (in the dark, ofcourse). 4. Enter a building and scream, “No body move, I have a bomb!” 5. Egg the old man’s house down the street and wait for him to come out. Then egg him and stroll away. He’s old, he’s got bad eye sight. 6. Have sex. above the covers. 7. Have sex. Above the covers. With yourself. 8. Shave your beard. When the lights come on, you’ll be a walking piece of post-puberty art. 9. Walk down the street with a torch light lighting you from the bottom. Pay no attention t...

An Email from Malcolm Gladwell
2008-03-27 05:02:00
So, I read an article by Malcolm Gladwell for one of my Advertising and Society course readings. I was really impressed at the unconventional, non-academic way of writing to get the point across, so I sent him an e-mail to give him my salutations and kudos. Turns out, he actually replied! Malcolm replied! You know ...

We live in an age dominated by computers and the internet. Words such as cyberspace, information highway and technology are ingrained in our minds. However, we need to understand how these advancements in human civilization work, and embark on a discourse as to whether these technologies really do dominate our lives and what other factors ...

You?ve Got Spam!
2008-03-16 08:33:00
The following is a paper I wrote on spam for an assignment. Please take a look. A 2004 report from the firm Message Labs estimated that spam accounted for 80 percent of international email traffic, 10 percent higher than 2000 (Task Force On Spam , 2005). While there is no fixed definition, nor agreed-upon date of the ...

What Do You Do With A Smashed iPhone Screen? Fix It!
2008-03-09 08:04:00
What do you do? There are three options for you 1. You could call Apple and they’ll charge you $200 or $250 depending on the capacity of your iPhone. They do not cover physical screen damage in their warranty. The screens are the same for both capacities (4 and 8 gigs) but they make money off ...

What In The World Does It Mean?
2008-03-08 00:44:00
Hello all! Today’s phrase is Consumer Culture! While this may be true of advertising and society, it is also relevant to film studies. Here’s why: This refers to the society in which consumption of goods is the major theme. In this idea, culture is commodified as an object of trade. Entrepreneurs bank on low self-esteem and make products which are associated with social dimensions such as relationships, socio-economic status and identity. In film and television, we can relate this to how television is advertising and every program is filled with ads (be it product placement, or during commercial breaks). Television becomes a vehicle for mass consumption, each show being targeted to a specific audience, such as talk shows geared towards the female, and then advertising products related to them such as hygiene-related, food-related products: products for the household. In the article, “Answering Advertisers’ Prayers,” the author Cashmore talks about how television au...

Robert Scoble Launches Fast Company
2008-03-03 12:25:00
It should be as popular as American Idol: Robert Scoble of Scobleizer, along with his teammates have launched FastCompany .TV. Robert Scoble is encouraging (as always) for the site to be a medium of two-way communication between the FastCompany team and its viewers. Alongside posting a comment like one would on a blog, Scoble has added a field where one may post a vlog response to ...

Pakistan Bans Then Unbans YouTube
2008-03-01 03:35:00
I do not know how many of the people in North America (and the wider world for that matter) are aware of the fact that Pakistan had banned YouTube from being accessed in the country. Other than reasons that have been mentioned on various online news syndicates, there remains speculation as to what happened. Some claim ...

Innovative Technological Convergence
2008-02-20 07:55:00
An important aspect I have recently come to understand about technological convergence is the innovation factor. Often, when a gadget or device incorporates several different tools, it brings about synergy, opening a hallway to a completely different use than intended or at least, expected. What is even more interesting is when several gadgets’ innovative use ...

White Supremacy
2008-01-24 06:27:00
What is going on here? The above graffiti was found on a door of a common thoroughfare in York University’s Vari Hall leading to the Ross building and Central Square. There are a couple more pictures which may be found on my Uber profile (http://www.uber.com/tabish). Disturbing. Not only does it talk about white supremacy, but ...

What Technology Can Do For Us
2008-01-17 05:57:00
I was on Ayeshah’s blog where she posted the following video: A Vision of Students Today  It is indeed something to think about. Too Much Information As the video tells us, we ‘browse’ through so much information, it is almost impossible to keep up. So much information is created, modified, deleted or becomes obsolete everyday, that to keep up with it, ...

Musharraf to U.S.: Stay Out Of Pakistan
2008-01-13 06:59:00
For the entire article, click here (Courtesy of CNN.com) “Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has made it clear that a U.S. military mission to capture Osama bin Laden or other top al Qaeda leaders on Pakistani soil would be unwelcome and “against the sovereignty of Pakistan.”" Let us analyze this: Pakistan is an independent state. Persuasion in Advertising
2008-01-13 00:50:00
Now this is really interesting (Original post found here: http://mikecane2008.wordpress.com/2 008/01/12/video-to-eat-your-weekend-and-s care-you/) This is a demonstration of subliminal persuasion and imagery in advertising at work. What happens when you fool the fooler (is that even a word?) ?
